Tilapia is a common fish species inhabiting inland waters and estuarine regions in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, and useful for bio-monitoring of metal pollution. Metallothionein (MT) gene expression in fish tissues has been useful to sub-lethal risk assessment as biomarker of exposure to metal ions in fishes inhabiting metal contaminated area. To investigate metal inductions of Tilapia MT gene expression in vivo, Tilapias were injected with different concentrations of heavy metals and tissues were then removed for quantitative PCR assay using mimic PCR methods. All of the metal ions tested (Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+) were able to induce hepatic MT mRNA levels. Renal MT mRNA levels of Cd2+ and Zn2+ treated fish was not induced with significant fold induction, however MT mRNA levels in gills were sensitive to the administrations of these metal ions. These data indicated that Tilapia MT mRNA levels in gills and liver are sensitive biomarker of exposure to various metal ions. 相似文献

There has been a resurgence of interest in time geography studies due to emerging spatiotemporal big data in urban environments. However, the rapid increase in the volume, diversity, and intensity of spatiotemporal data poses a significant challenge with respect to the representation and computation of time geographic entities and relations in road networks. To address this challenge, a spatiotemporal data model is proposed in this article. The proposed spatiotemporal data model is based on a compressed linear reference (CLR) technique to transform network time geographic entities in three-dimensional (3D) (x, y, t) space to two-dimensional (2D) CLR space. Using the proposed spatiotemporal data model, network time geographic entities can be stored and managed in classical spatial databases. Efficient spatial operations and index structures can be directly utilized to implement spatiotemporal operations and queries for network time geographic entities in CLR space. To validate the proposed spatiotemporal data model, a prototype system is developed using existing 2D GIS techniques. A case study is performed using large-scale datasets of space-time paths and prisms. The case study indicates that the proposed spatiotemporal data model is effective and efficient for storing, managing, and querying large-scale datasets of network time geographic entities. 相似文献

Using specific examples, this paper discusses several key issues associated with the use of biomarkers, which could influence their effectiveness and usefulness. First, there are few biomarkers that are specific enough to allow an identification of the precise nature of environmental stressors. Second, biomarker studies conducted at molecular or subcellular levels tend to be more repeatable and predictable, but their ability to predict significant biological effects is limited. In contrast, biomarkers at physiological, organismic or higher levels are usually more ecologically relevant, but slower to respond and more difficult to detect. Third, some organisms have the ability to repair damage induced by initial toxic insults and make adjustments to their biological responses, thus increasing the chance of false negatives. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate biomarker for use under specific ecological circumstances will be a compromise that is determined by the precise question(s) asked and cost-benefit considerations. 相似文献
