Holocene fringing reef development around Bora Bora is controlled by variations in accommodation space (as a function of sea‐level and antecedent topography) and exposure to waves and currents. Subsidence ranged from 0 to 0·11 m kyr?1, and did not create significant accommodation space. A windward fringing reef started to grow 8·7 kyr bp , retrograded towards the coast over a Pleistocene fringing reef until ca 6·0 kyr bp , and then prograded towards the lagoon after sea‐level had reached its present level. The retrograding portion of the reef is dominated by corals, calcareous algae and microbialite frameworks; the prograding portion is largely detrital. The reef is up to 13·5 m thick and accreted vertically with an average rate of 3·12 m kyr?1. Lateral growth amounts to 13·3 m kyr?1. Reef corals are dominated by an inner Pocillopora assemblage and an outer Acropora assemblage. Both assemblages comprise thick crusts of coralline algae. Palaeobathymetry suggests deposition in 0 to 10 m depth. An underlying Pleistocene fringing reef formed during the sea‐level highstand of Marine Isotope Stage 5e, and is also characterized by the occurrence of corals, coralline algal crusts and microbialites. A previously investigated, leeward fringing reef started to form contemporaneously (8·78 kyr bp ), but is thicker (up to 20 m) and solely prograded throughout the Holocene. A shallow Pocillopora assemblage and a deeper water Montipora assemblage were identified, but detrital facies dominate. At the Holocene reef base, only basalt was recovered. The Holocene windward–leeward differences are a consequence of less accommodation space on the eastern island side that eventually led to a more complex reef architecture. As a result of higher rates of exposure and flushing, the reef framework on the windward island side is more abundant and experienced stronger cementation. In the Pleistocene, the environmental conditions on the leeward island side were presumably unfavourable for fringing reef growth.  相似文献

To investigate environmental variability during the late Holocene in the western Gulf of Maine, USA, we collected a 142-year-old living bivalve (Arctica islandica) in 2004, and three fossil A. islandica shells of the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and late MWP / Little Ice Age (LIA) period (corrected 14CAMS = 1030 ± 78 ad; 1320 ± 45 ad; 1357 ± 40 ad) in 1996. We compared the growth record of the modern shell with continuous plankton recorder (CPR) time-series (1961–2003) from the Gulf of Maine. A significant correlation (r 2 = 0.55; p < 0.0001) exists between the standardized annual growth index (SGI) of the modern shell and the relative abundance of zooplankton species Calanus finmarchicus. We therefore propose that SGI data from A. islandica is a valid proxy for paleo-productivity of at least one major zooplankton taxa. SGIs from these shells reveal significant periods of 2–6 years (NAO-like) based on wavelet analysis, multitaper method (MTM) analysis and singular spectrum analysis (SSA) during the late Holocene. Based on established physical oceanographic observation in the Gulf of Maine, we suggest that slope water variability coupled with North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) dynamics is primarily responsible for the observed SGI variability. We show how the apparent reversal of longitudinal magnetic fields near the limb is a projection effect and may be used to estimate the divergence angle of the magnetic canopy. The limb distance at which the apparent reversal is not seen is the limiting angle of divergence of lines of force emerging from the surface. We have surveyed a number of polar limb magnetograms, where the unipolar field makes this easier, and found the divergence angle to be about 20° from the vertical.  相似文献

A laboratory curve of growth analysis was made on the lines in two ammonia bands located at 6450 Å and 10800 Å and the abundance of ammonia in the atmosphere of Jupiter was determined. Lines in the 6450 Å band appear to fall on the weak line section of the curve of growth, while those in the 10800 Å band fall in the transition region. The abundance values obtained from these bands are 13.0±3 m atm and 15±8 m atm, respectively.Measurements of the intensity distribution in the 6450 Å band in the laboratory and in the Jovian spectra show that the intensity of several lines in this band is highly dependent on the temperature. Strengths for some of the lines in the 6450 Å band were determined and half-widths of some strong lines were also measured. Because of their profound influence on water movement and nutrient cycling in salt marshes, the two key physical properties of hydraulic conductivity and compressibility were studied in the Great Sippewissett Marsh and in the Ebben Creek Marsh in Massachusetts. Hydraulic conductivity was the most variable property: most frequently observed conductivities were of the order of 10?3 cm s?1 in both marshes, but extremes ranged from about 10?1 to 10?5 cm s?1. Compressibility was much less variable, and contributed of the order of 10?3 cm?1 to the specific storativity of marsh sediment, making compression a major mechanism for changes in water storage in the sediment. Surface sediments frequently exhibited below-average conductivity, in contrast to freshwater bog peats which are usually most conductive at the surface. These measured properties may be applied to estimate the importance of many critical processes, such as the extent of infiltration occurring on the marsh surface, the hydrologic influence of the tidally varying creeks, and the hydrologic response to spring-neap tidal cycles.  相似文献

Summary. Pacific earthquakes studied by Gogna, also three important explosions in the Tuamotu archipelago, are rediscussed. The results are very consistent, but those from Tuamotu are later than Gogna's by about 1 s in the times of P about 60°. Both sets of data give PKP residuals about -5 s about 140° - 142°, indicating that the observations there referred to the neighbourhood of the cusp of the travel-time curve but the ISS had compared them with the DEF branch. The corresponding difference in the 1940 tables is about 2 s.
Analysis at intervals of 1° indicated that the cusp of PKP is about 141° instead of 143° as in the 1940 tables and the difference between it and the DEF branch at these distances is about - 5 s.
Travel times of S under the Pacific were found but need more data, especially at distances under 10°.
Times of PcP reported by Kogan and Carder were compared with those calculated from P in Gogan's explosions, and indicated a radius of the core of 3479.8 ± 1.8 km.  相似文献
