The application of a newly developed physics-based earthquake simulator to the active faults inferred by aeromagnetism in southern Calabria has produced a synthetic catalog lasting 100 ky including more than 18,000 earthquakes of magnitude ≥?4.0. This catalog exhibits temporal, spatial and magnitude features, which resemble those of the observed seismicity. As an example of the potential use of synthetic catalogs, a map of the peak ground acceleration (PGA) for a given exceedance probability on the territory under investigation has been produced by means of a simple attenuation law applied to all the events reported in the synthetic catalog. This map was compared with the existing hazard map that is presently used in the national seismic building regulations. The comparison supports a strong similarity of our results with the values given in the present Italian seismic building code, despite the latter being based on a different methodology. The same similarity cannot be recognized for the comparison of our present study with the results obtained from a previous study based on our same methodology but with a different geological model. 相似文献

The origin of the nearly circular Colônia structure, located at the southwestern edge of the city of São Paulo, Brazil, has been the subject of a long‐standing debate, ever since the 1960s when the structure was first investigated by geophysical methods. The structure still raises interest for geological research, as its sedimentary infill holds important paleoclimatic information about the evolution of the tropical rainforest, as well as the interplay between the South American summer monsoon, the Intertropical Convergence Zone, and the southern Westerly wind belt—for possibly as long as several million years. In addition, the search for evidence to conclusively establish the origin of this structure continues, and the answer most likely lies in the lower portions of the basin's sedimentary infill, which also holds a significant potential for underground water resources. Here, we present the results from recent seismic (reflection and HVSR), gravimetric, and geoelectrical surveys. They have provided a reliable image of the sedimentary infill, and the maximum depth to basement within the structure has been constrained consistently by the different methods to approximately ?400 m. The geophysical data have also allowed to map the lateral contact between the crystalline basement rocks and the sedimentary infill, which indicates a diameter of approximately 2.8 km for the sedimentary basin, with 3.6 km being the diameter of the outermost limit of the structure. A total of six seismic stratigraphic boundaries were identified within the sedimentary infill, providing a framework for the planning of a deep drilling campaign and subsequent sampling program aimed at geological and paleoclimatology studies. 相似文献

We report on the discovery of a coherent periodicity in the B light curve of the symbiotic star BF Cyg. The signal was detected in some sections of the light curve of the star recorded in the year 2003 as double-hump periodic variations with an amplitude of ≃7 mmag. In the year 2004, the signal was also present in only a subsection of the light curve. In that year, the system was about twice as bright and the amplitude of the oscillations was about half of what it was in 2003. In 2004, the cycle structure was of a single hump, the phase of which coincided with the phase of one of the humps in the 2003 cycle. No periodic signal was detected in a third, short series of observations performed in the year 2007, when the star was 3 mag brighter than in 2003. We interpret the periodicity as the spin period of the white dwarf component of this interacting binary system. We suggest that the signal in 2003 originated in two hotspots on or near the surface of the white dwarf most likely around the two antipodes of an oblique dipole magnetic field of this star. Magnetic field lines funnelled accreted matter from the wind of the cool component to the pole areas, where the falling material created the hotspots. This process is apparently intermittent in its nature. In 2004, the activity near only one pole was enhanced enough to raise the signal above the threshold of our detection ability. 相似文献

The floodplain of the Upper Paraná River, Brazil, is strongly influenced by hydrology, which in turn affects geomorphological and environmental conditions, and controls the form of islands in the river. Such islands develop by deposition of river-borne sediment that creates small lateral sediment bars. Geomorphological processes can produce a variety of aquatic environments on such islands, e.g. channels, backwaters, lakes, transitional areas, and swamps. Our objective was to test whether subfossil diatoms preserved in the sediment on an island in the Upper Paraná River floodplain responded to changes in limnological conditions brought about by such geomorphological modifications. We hypothesized that the composition of diatom assemblages in the sediment shifted in response to past geomorphic, and hence limnological conditions. We analyzed diatom subfossils in a 2-m-long sediment core with a calibrated date near the base of 1047–1224 cal yr AD. Absence of diatoms at the bottom of the sequence was associated with the channel phase, followed by appearance of diatoms 1229–1381 cal yr AD that were adapted to flow, in the backwater phase. After another 100–200 years, presence of Eunotia species in the lake phase suggests a decrease in pH, phosphorus and nitrogen. Replacement of Eunotia spp. by Diadesmis species, following a transition phase, suggests different environmental conditions, with reduced water depth. Diatoms in surface deposits are distinct from assemblages in the other phases in the core and contain taxa that suggest a disturbed environment, with variations in water depth and flow. The data illustrate the importance of physical and hydrological factors in shaping diatom communities and show the utility of diatoms as bioindicators in this floodplain environment. 相似文献

To design and review the operation of spillways, it is necessary to estimate design hydrographs, considering their peak flow, shape and volume. A hybrid method is proposed that combines the shape of the design hydrograph obtained with the UNAM Institute of Engineering Method (UNAMIIM) with the peak flow and volume calculated from a bivariate method. This hybrid method is applied to historical data of the Huites Dam, Sinaloa, Mexico. The goal is to estimate return periods for the maximum discharge flows (that account for the damage caused downstream) and the maximum levels reached in the dam (measure of the hydrological dam safety) corresponding to a given spillway and its management policy. Therefore, to validate the method, the results obtained by the flood routing of the 50-year hydrograph are compared with those obtained by the flood routing of the three largest historical floods. Both maximum flow and elevation were in the range of values observed within 37.5–75 years corresponding to the length of the historical record. 相似文献

Neoglacial and Little Ice Age (LIA) limits occur within 2km of the Inland Ice margin in the Kangerlussuaq area on west Greenland. The LIA limit is clearly demarcated by ice-cored and non-ice-cored moraines, out-wash surfaces and trimlines. Rhizocarpon sp. thalli of ≥16mm on these landforms indicate a 1-2km retreat of the Inland Ice in the past c. 100 years, coincident with peripheral thinning of the ice. An older neoglacial moraine host of Rhizocarpon sp. thalli <40 mm indicates a minimum limiting age of <400 BP, whereas Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) ages on aeolian silt capping the moraine yield close limiting ages of c. 2000 BP. Aeolian silt deposition beyond neoglacial limits yields OSL ages of c. 3000 BP, potentially coeval with advance of the Inland Ice. Aeolian sedimentation and the inferred age of the moraine are coincident with pronounced cooling inferred from palaeolimnological records from west and south Greenland. This neoglacial event at c. 2000 BP is probably of similar extent to the LIA maximum, because of the paucity of preserved moraine remnants. 相似文献

Fluvial bank erosion rates are often quantified by assuming that the erosion rate is a function of the excess (above a critical threshold) boundary shear stress applied by the flow. Research has shown that the form roughness induced by natural topographic bank features, such as slumps, spurs and embayments, is the dominant component of the spatially‐averaged total shear stress, meaning that form roughness provides an important control on bank erosion rates. However, measuring the relative components of the total shear stress for a natural system is not straightforward. In this work we use the method of Kean and Smith to partition the form and skin drag components of river bank roughness using a time series (2005–2011) of high‐resolution topographic surveys of an eroding bank of the Cecina River in central Italy. This method approximates the form drag component of the roughness along a longitudinal bank profile as a series of user‐defined Gaussian curves. The extracted metrics are used in conjunction with an estimate of the outer region flow velocity to partition the form and skin drag components of the total boundary shear stress according to the Kean and Smith analytical solution. The relative magnitude of the form and skin shear stress at each survey date is analysed alongside DEMs of difference to reveal that intense episodes of erosion are followed by periods of quiescence. We show that this is due to the protection offered by increased form drag roughness following erosion. We conceptualise the dynamic feedbacks that exist between river discharge, bank erosion processes and bank form roughness, into a simple model of the self‐limiting nature of river bank erosion. Patagonia, including the island of Tierra del Fuego, lies in southernmost South America at the junction of the South American,
Antarctic, and Scotia tectonic plates. Historical and instrumental records have documented several local earthquakes of damaging
magnitude, posing a threat to the rapidly growing population of 300,000 and the expanding industrial and service infrastructure.
Short and inaccurate instrumental records of local seismic events and a diffuse epicenter distribution not clearly related
to the recognized seismogenic structures have hindered an adequate evaluation of the seismic hazard for this region. To improve
this situation, a paleoseismological study was carried out on two gravelly strandplains on the Atlantic coast of Patagonia.
Surveying combined ground-probing radar, vertical electric sounding, and seismic refraction. Coseismic normal faults buried
beneath the strandplain bodies were revealed and related to the morphology of the strandplains. The faults have probable ages
between 0.9 and 6.4 kyr BP and a recurrence rate of about 1 kyr. The more likely source for these structures is the Magallanes-Fagnano
fault, a continental transform fault that crosses Tierra del Fuego. The distance of more than 300 km from the buried coseismic
structures to the trace of the Magallanes-Fagnano fault argues for high-magnitude earthquake activity on this fault throughout
the Holocene. Urban development on soft glacial and alluvial substrates increases the hazard. 相似文献
