Following the in vivo exposure of dab (Limanda limanda L.) to cadmium chloride, kidney phagocytes were collected and their respiratory burst measured in vitro using chemiluminescence. Fish were exposed to mean measured concentrations of 1.3, 2.7 and 5.5 mg Cd litre−1 (as total cadmium ion) for a total of nine weeks, followed by a three week depuration period in clean sea water. Compared with control fish, the respiratory burst of kidney phagocytes from dab sampled after six weeks was significantly reduced in the 2.7 and 5.5 mg Cd litre−1 treatments (Steel's test, p < 0.05). Significant reductions were observed in the respiratory burst of phagocytes from all cadmium exposed fish compared with control fish after nine weeks (Steel's test, p < 0.05). After a further three week depuration period in clean sea water, the respiratory burst of phagocytes from fish previously exposed to 1.3 and 2.7 mg Cd litre−1 were still significantly less than in the control group (Steel's test, p < 0.05). Muscle tissue cadmium concentrations were also analysed, although there was no clear relationship between the muscle total cadmium levels and kidney phagocyte chemiluminescence. The results are discussed with respect to the possible mechanism(s) of cadmium immunotoxicity in dab and recommendations made for future work.  相似文献

Two large-scale (9.5 m long, 4.7 m wide, 2.6 m deep), three-dimensional artificial aquifers were constructed to investigate the influence of spatial variations in aquifer properties on contaminant transport. One aquifer was uniformly filled with coarse sand media (0.6 to 2.0 mm) and the other was constructed as a heterogeneous aquifer using blocks of fine, medium, and coarse sands. The key features of these artificial aquifers are described. An innovative deaeration tower was constructed to overcome a problem of the aquifers becoming blocked with excess air from the ground water source. A series of tracer injection experiments were conducted to test the homogeneity of the first aquifer that was purposely built as a homogeneous aquifer and to calculate values of aquifer parameters. Experimental data show that the aquifer is slightly heterogeneous, and hydraulic conductivity values are significantly higher down one side of the aquifer compared to the mean value. There was very good agreement in estimated dispersivity values between the plume area ratio methods and the curve fitting of tracer breakthrough curves. Dispersivity estimates from a full areal source injection (12.2 m2) experiment using a 1D analytical model were higher than estimates from a limited source injection (0.2 m2) experiment using a 3D model, possibly because the 1D model does not take account of the heterogeneity of hydraulic conductivity in the aquifer, thus overestimating dispersivity. Transverse and vertical dispersivity values were about five times less than the longitudinal dispersivity. There was slight sorption of Rhodamine WT onto the aquifer media.  相似文献

Sodic amphiboles in high pressure and ultra-high pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks are complex solid solutions in the system Na2O–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O (NMASH) whose compositions vary with pressure and temperature. We conducted piston-cylinder experiments at 20–30?kbar and 700–800?°C to investigate the stability and compositional variations of sodic amphiboles, based on the reaction glaucophane=2jadeite+talc, by using the starting assemblage of natural glaucophane, talc and quartz, with synthetic jadeite. A close approach to equilibrium was achieved by performing compositional reversals, by evaluating compositional changes with time, and by suppressing the formation of Na-phyllosilicates. STEM observations show that the abundance of wide-chain structures in the synthetic amphiboles is low. An important feature of sodic amphibole in the NMASH system is that the assemblage jadeite–talc?±?quartz does not fix its composition at glaucophane. This is because other amphibole species such as cummingtonite (Cm), nyböite (Nyb), Al–Na-cummingtonite (Al–Na-Cm) and sodium anthophyllite (Na-Anth) are also buffered via the model reactions: 3cummingtonite?+?4quartz?+?4H2O=7talc, nyböite?+?3quartz=3jadeite?+?talc, 3Al–Na-cummingtonite + 11quartz + 2H2O=6jadeite + 5talc, and 3 sodium anthophyllite?+?13quartz?+?4H2O=3 jadeite + 7talc. We observed that at all pressures and temperatures investigated, the compositions of newly grown amphiboles deviate significantly from stoichiometric glaucophane due to varying substitutions of AlIV for Si, Mg on the M(4) site, and Na on the A-site. The deviation can be described chiefly by two compositional vectors: [NaAAlIV]<=>[□ASi] (edenite) toward nyböite, and [Na(M4)AlVI]<=>[Mg(M4)MgVI] toward cummingtonite. The extent of nyböite and cummingtonite substitution increases with temperature and decreases with pressure in the experiments. Similar compositional variations occur in sodic amphiboles from UHP rocks. The experimentally calibrated compositional changes therefore may prove useful for thermobarometric applications.  相似文献

Turnover of C in soils is the dominant flux in the global C cycle and is responsible for transporting 20 times the quantity of anthropogenic emissions each year. This paper investigates the potential for soils to be modified with Ca-rich materials (e.g. demolition waste or basic slag) to capture some of the transferred C as geologically stable CaCO3. To test this principal, artificial soil known to contain Ca-rich minerals (Ca silicates and portlandite) was analysed from two sites across NE England, UK. The results demonstrate an average C content of 30 ± 15.3 Kg C m−2 stored as CaCO3, which is three times the expected organic C content and that it has accumulated at a rate of 25 ± 12.8 t C ha−1 a−1 since 1996. Isotopic analysis of the carbonates gave values between −6.4‰ and −27.5‰ for δ13C and −3.92‰ and −20.89‰ for δ18O, respectively (against V-PDB), which suggests that a combination of carbonate formation mechanisms are operating including the hydroxylation of gaseous CO2 in solution, and the sequestration of degraded organic C with minor remobilisation/precipitation of lithogenic carbonates. This study implies that construction/development sites may be designed with a C capture function to sequester atmospheric C into the soil matrix with a maximum global potential of 290 Mt C a−1.  相似文献

A new formula for dispersion from continuous sources in light wind conditions is derived, which takes account of along-wind dispersion. Thisis achieved by integrating over puffs released at different times and byassuming that the puffs grow with a size that is proportional totravel time at small travel times, and proportional to the square rootof travel time at large times. The results are compared with theGaussian plume formula and with two previous formulae that assumeeither linear growth or growth proportional to the square root of traveltime throughout the puff evolution. The conditions under which thevarious solutions are good approximations to each other or to anyresults that might be obtained with a more realistic puff growthformula are investigated. Finally the relevance of these idealisedresults to more realistic atmospheric flows is discussed and alternativemodelling approaches are considered.  相似文献

Previous experiments to determine the aqueous solubility of lead-rich orthoclase in the presence of the ethanoic acid anion (acetate) at 150°C and 50 MPa have shown that the observed fluid compositions are essentially controlled by the presence of secondary mineral precipitates, which buffer dissolved species apart from lead. Data for lead suggest that dissolution increased with increasing fluid ethanoic acid anion content, but the ethanoic acid anion was unstable under the experimental conditions. Additional experiment have now been carried out using pure natural albite and ethanoic acid anion solutions at 150°C and 50 MPa, in which the ethanoic acid anion remains stable. The results for albite again demonstrate the influence on fluid composition of secondary mineral precipitates, but data for silica allow the rates of dissolution to be estimated. Values obtained for the dissolution rate constant increase from 1.8 × 10−7 to 5.3 × 10−7 s−1 with increasing fluid ethanoic acid anion content (0.1–2.5 molal) and approximate to values for quartz and orthoclase dissolution rates for similar PT conditions, reflecting similarity in the mechanisms of dissolution of the minerals' three dimensional (alumino)silicate frameworks. However, these experiments provide no other evidence that the ethanoic acid anion enhances equilibrium solubilities of feldspars or quartz. In contrast to the results for the ethanoic acid anion, data for albite dissolution experiments in the presence of the ethanedioic acid anion (oxalate) at 150°C and 50 MPa show an inhibitionn of solubility (apart from aluminium), while data for the 2-hydroxy-1,2,3-propanetricarboxylic acid trivalent anion (citrate) show considerable enhancement of solubility for aluminium and silicon, and titanium derived from the reaction vessel. The 2-hydroxy-1,2,3-propanetricarboxylic acid trivalent anion is unstable, decaying according to first order kinetics (half life = 1.5 days). In their application to problems of diagenesis in the presence of organic acid anions, these results suggest that the ethanoic acid anion may influence feldspar dissolution by accelerating diagenetic reactions, while geologically short-lived species such as the 2-hydroxy-1,2,3-propanetricarboxylic acid trivalent anion and its decay products may dramatically enhance aluminosilicate solubility.  相似文献

We present the method of plasma diagnostics by quasi-thermal noise spectroscopy and show examples of application in the solar wind and the Earth's plasmasphere. Using only an electric antenna and a radio receiver, diagnostics of various space environments (magnetized or not) can be obtained in situ.
