This report of the Swiss Seismological Service summarizes the seismic activity in Switzerland and surrounding regions during 2012. During this period, 497 earthquakes and 88 quarry blasts were detected and located in the region under consideration. With a total of only 13 events with ML ≥ 2.5, the seismic activity in the year 2012 was far below the average over the previous 37 years. Most noteworthy were the earthquake sequence of Filisur (GR) in January with two events of ML 3.3 and 3.5, the ML 4.2 and ML 3.5 earthquakes at a depth of 32 km below Zug in February and the ML 3.6 event near Vallorcine in October. The epicentral intensity of the ML 4.2 event close to Zug was IV, with a maximum intensity of V reached in a few areas, probably due to site amplification effects. 相似文献

Toxicity comparison of biosurfactants and synthetic surfactants used in oil spill remediation to two estuarine species 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The relative environmental toxicities of synthetic and biogenic surfactants used in oil spill remediation efforts are not well understood. Acute and chronic toxicities of three synthetic surfactants and three microbiologically produced surfactants were determined and compared in this study for the estuarine epibenthic invertebrate, Mysidopsis bahia and the inland silverside, Menidia beryllina. The toxicities of the surfactant were determined in standard laboratory static and static-renewal tests of 4-7 d duration. Results were specific to the surfactant, response parameter and test species. The LC50 values (nominal concentrations) for M. bahia ranged from 3.3 mg/l (Triton X-100) to >1000 mg/l (PES-61) and 2.5 mg/l (Triton X-100) to 413.6 mg/l (PES-61) for M. beryllina. Chronic first-effect concentrations (mg/l) for the six surfactants ranged from 2.3 to 465.0 (M. beryllina) and 1.0 to >1000.0 (M. bahia) based on reductions in growth and fecundity. Few generalizations could be made concerning the results due to their variability but M. bahia was generally the more sensitive species and the toxicities of the biosurfactants were intermediate to those of the synthetic surfactants. 相似文献

Precession-related forcing of seasonal insolation changes in the northern hemisphere (NH) alternates between maximum NH seasonality (summer perihelion–increased insolation; winter aphelion–decreased insolation) and minimum NH seasonality (summer aphelion, and winter perihelion). With maximum NH seasonality, climate models simulate stronger NH summer monsoons that bring increased precipitation to North Africa and South and East Asia, in agreement with the in-phase relation of precipitation and NH summer insolation found in many paleoclimatic records. However paleoclimatic records in parts of the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and the interior of Asia also indicate increased moisture at times of maximum NH seasonality, a change not always clearly linked to stronger summer monsoons—either because these regions are at or beyond the boundaries of the present-day monsoon or because the observations allow multiple causal interpretations, or both. This study focuses on the possible role of changes in NH winter climate in explaining these wetter episodes. Using climate model simulations, we show that the ‘NH winter aphelion–decreased NH winter insolation’ orbital configuration is linked to the Mediterranean storm track and increased winter rains in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and interior Asia. We conclude that wetter periods at precession time scales in these particular regions may have resulted either from increased wintertime storm track precipitation, or from a combination of increased winter and summer rainfall. Ruins representing both medieval Norse and Inuit (Thule culture) settlements can be found together on the coast at Sandhavn (59°59′ N, 44°46′ W), Greenland. The site presents a rare opportunity to investigate the character of past contact and interaction between these two peoples. Soils‐based, radiocarbon, and palynological analyses demonstrate the creation of hortic anthrosols within Norse home‐fields used between the mid‐11th and late 14th centuries A.D. Irrigation channels have been identified within the home‐fields, while rising grass pollen influx reveals intensification in hay production over the period ca. A.D. 1260–1350 despite climatic deterioration setting in around this time. Floor deposits and wall packing from an Inuit winter house returned dates of cal. A.D. 1220–1290 (2σ), yet no direct landscape‐based evidence for Inuit activity could be determined. Although the exact nature of the relationship between Norse and Thule at Sandhavn remains unclear, the role of this site as a harbor and possible trading area may have attracted Inuit settlers keen to participate in European trade networks. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

At the dynamic coastal fringe, numerous processes interact with local morphology. In soft-cliff environments, this can often lead to the occurrence of coastal geohazards. These can pose a major threat to property and cultural heritage, and an effective monitoring strategy is therefore essential. While contemporary monitoring techniques have been applied, these are often unsuitable in isolation. This paper presents an integrated approach, with the development of weighted surface matching software enabling reliable dataset fusion and multi-temporal change detection, even where significant surface differences exist. We obtained longitudinally resolved thermal infrared spectra (8-13 μm and 17-25 μm) of Jupiter’s impact debris at the Gemini South Telescope on July 24, 2009; five days after the July 19th collision. These were used to study the mechanisms responsible for the redistribution of thermal energy and material (ammonia and stratospheric particulates) following the impact. Upwelling of (8.5 ± 4.1) × 1014 g of tropospheric air was sufficient to deposit (6.7 ± 4.1) × 1012 g of NH3 over a 6° longitude range above the impact core. The NH3 was distributed over the 20-80 mbar region with a peak abundance of 1.0 ± 0.6 ppm at 45 mbar. Only a 10th of this abundance was observed over the western ejecta, and it is unlikely that these observations were sensitive to NH3 entrained in the ballistic plume itself. The pattern of excess thermal energy was markedly different from that of Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9), with a localized tropospheric perturbation of 2.0 ± 1.0 K at 200-300 mbar and a broader stratospheric warming of up to 3.5 ± 2.0 K at 10-30 mbar. We find no evidence of residual warmth at p < 1 mbar five days after the impact. The excess thermal energy places lower limits on the total energy of the impact (1.8-15.7 × 1026 ergs), which limits the impactor diameter to 70-510 m (depending on the bulk density chosen for the material).The models of the Gemini spectra required three distinct aerosol features, indicative of the mineralogy of the dark particulate debris, centred at 9.1, 10.0 and 18.5 μm. The retrieved opacities for each of these features were distributed over a larger area (9-10° longitude) and at higher altitudes (above the 10-mbar level) than the stratospheric NH3, and they are more spatially inhomogeneous. This implies the particulates were either entrained with the rising hot plume or created upon plume re-entry and are subsequently redistributed by stratospheric winds. The three particulate features were consistent with a mixture of amorphous iron and magnesium-rich silicates and silicas in the debris field. A broad 10-μm signature was coincident with peaks expected from material rich in amorphous olivines (but poor in pyroxenes), and similar to silicate features observed during SL9. A narrow 9.1-μm signature was interpreted as a combination of amorphous and crystalline silica. Finally, a broad 18.5-μm emitter was not adequately reproduced by a mixture of simple olivines and pyroxenes and remains to be identified. 相似文献

The Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) survey is a large area (2?? sr), sensitive (40 mJy), high frequency (20 GHz) survey of the southern sky. The survey was conducted in two parts: an initial fast scanning survey, and a series of more accurate follow-up observations. The follow-up survey catalog has been presented by Murphy et al. (MNRAS 402:2403, 2010). In this paper we discuss the hardware setup and scanning survey strategy as well as the production of the scanning survey catalog. 相似文献

During this period, 450 earthquakes and 68 quarry blasts were detected and located in the region under consideration. The three strongest events occurred about 15 km NW of Basel in southern Germany (ML 4.2), near Wildhaus in the Toggenburg (ML 4.0) and near Bivio in Graubünden (ML 3.5). Although felt by the population, they were not reported to have caused any damage.
