Concentrations and inventories of137Cs and239,240Pu were determined in sea waters and sediments columns from the western North Pacific from 1980 to 1986.The239,240Pu/137Cs activity ratio in the water column shows a tendency to increase from the surface (10–3) to bottom waters (10–1), but the ratio in sediment is within a rather narrow range (10–2 to 10–1), indicating more effective removal of plutonium from the water column than137Cs. In regions south of 40N, the radionuclide inventories in the water column significantly exceed the estimated global fallout (stratospheric fallout due to the atmospheric nuclear explosion), especially in the case of239,240Pu. These excess inventories imply that local or close-in fallout derived from nuclear explosions in the equatorial North Pacific are well-preserved and retained in the regions, despite about 20 years since the atmospheric nuclear explosion moratorium. Data suggesting lateral transport of137Cs in surface water from north of 40N to southern regions is shown. Some data on90Sr contents are also shown. 相似文献

In a previous paper (Oguma and Nagata, 2002), it was shown that frequency distributions of temperature and salinity in the
sea off Sanriku Coast, Japan are skewed, and sometimes observed values exceed m + 5σ (m = mean, σ = standard deviation). This means that, if we apply a 3σ criterion for a range check, many real data would be lost.
We have expanded our analysis to the subarctic North Pacific, the subarctic North Atlantic and their surrounding areas, by
computing the distributions of skewness and kurtosis. It is found that the region of high positive skewness extends in an
east-north-east direction in the Mixed Water Region from off Sanriku, and reaches to about 155°E. A high negative skewness
zone is recognized along the southern margin of the Kuroshio Extension. These are thought to be generated by the breaking
of the meander of the Kuroshio Extension and subsequent ejection of warm and cold eddies to the north and south, respectively.
Other high positive skewness areas are found to the south of Kuril Islands and in the Japan Sea. These are generated due to
very sharp vertical gradients of temperature and salinity. The situation in the North Atlantic is very similar to the North
Pacific, though the detailed nature is changed due to differences of oceanographic condition. The effect of grid size on the
skewed nature of the distribution is also discussed.

Hydrographic structure and transport of intermediate water were observed in the Kuroshio region south of Japan, focusing on
the 26.6–27.5σθ density in six cruises from May 1998 through September 2001. In the section off the Boso Peninsula where the Kuroshio exfoliates
eastward, the intermediate water was clearly clustered into three groups meridionally composed of the coastal water, the Kuroshio
water and the offshore water. Compared with the Kuroshio water characterized by warm, salty water transported by the Kuroshio,
the coastal and offshore waters significantly degenerated due to mixing with cold, fresh waters originated from the subarctic
region: the former was affected by alongshore spread of the coastal Oyashio and the latter by direct intrusion of the new
North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) into the southern side of the Kuroshio current axis. Particularly the offshore water
showed higher apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) in layers deeper than 26.9σθ while it showed lower AOU in layers shallower than 26.9σθ, which indicated that colder, fresher and higher AOU water was distributed on the southeastern side of the Kuroshio in deeper
layers. In May 1998, the Oyashio-Kuroshio mixing ratio was estimated to be typically 2:8 for the offshore water on the assumption
of isopycnal mixing. Moreover, northeastward volume transport of the Kuroshio water was obtained from geostrophic velocity
fields adjusted to lowered acoustic Doppler current profiler (LADCP) data to yield 6.1 Sv at 26.6–26.9σθ and 11.8 Sv at 26.9–27.5 σθ.

An improved gas chromatographic system was constructed to analyze oceanic dissolved N2, Ar and O2 with a higher accuracy and shorter analytical time. To obtain a higher accuracy of N2, Ar and O2 measurements, the following was added to the system: (I) an air trapping system; (II) a N2–CO2 trapping system after the operation of the air trapping system; (III) an active carbon column system for separating N2 and CO2 completely and (IV) the introduction of automatic valves controlling most of the system. Compared to previous studies, the precision of the measurements of N2, Ar and O2 concentrations was higher at 0.04%, 0.05% and 0.02%, respectively, and our analytical time was shorter at 600 s. Using the improved analytical technique, concentrations of N2 (CN2, 561.69–611.81 μmol/kg) and Ar (CAr, 15.126–16.238 μmol/kg), saturation states of N2 (ΔN2, − 5.1–0.9%) and Ar (ΔAr, − 7.0 to − 1.1%) from 0 m to 3000 m depth in the western North Pacific were observed during March 2005. Based on these data, we propose a new concept for estimating the amount of bubble injection (B). The total error in calculating B was estimated to be about 20%. We estimated B from 12 to 43 μmol/kg in this region using the observational values of N2 and Ar. As each water mass had a significantly different value of B even with an error of 20%, it is possible to use it as an index of sea surface state for when each water mass is produced in the sea surface mixed layer. Moreover, based on our values of B, we estimated preformed dissolved oxygen (DO) (CpreDO, 309–332 μmol/kg) and the saturation state of CpreDO (ΔpreDO, − 7.0 to − 1.2%) in this region. Thus, the difference between CpreDO and DO content in the ocean interior may be a more useful index for biogenic organic decomposition in the ocean field compared to Apparent Oxygen Utilization (AOU). Until now, the estimation of oceanic uptake of anthropogenic CO2 has used AOU as a major parameter. Nine new rock reference samples of the "Sedimentary rock series", Chert JCh-1, Dolomite JDo-1, Lake sediment JLk-1, Limestone JLs-1, Stream sediments JSd-1 to JSd-3, and Slates JS1-1 and JSl-2 have been prepared by the Geological Survey of Japan(GSJ). Thirty major, minor and trace elements were determined using atomic absorption spectrometry, flame emission spectrometry, infrared absorption spectrometry and wet chemical techniques. We have found several occurrences of slowly rising giant arches inYohkoh images. These are similar to the giant post-flare arches previously discovered by SMM instruments in the 80s. However, we see them now with 3–5 times better spatial resolution and can recognize well their loop-like structure. As a rule, these arches followeruptive flares with gradual soft X-ray bursts, and rise with speeds of 1.1–2.4 km s–1 which keep constant for >5 to 24 hours, reaching altitudes up to 250 000 km above the solar limb. These arches differ from post-flare loop systems by their (much higher) altitudes, (much longer) lifetimes, and (constant) speed of growth. One event appears to be a rise of a transequatorial interconnecting loop.In the event of 21–22 February 1992 one can see both the loop system, rising with a gradually decreasing speed to an altitude of 120 000 km, and the arch, emerging from behind the loops and continuing to rise with a constant speed for many more hours up to 240 000 km above the solar limb. In the event of 2–3 November 1991 three subsequent rising large-scale coronal systems can be recognized: first a fast one with speed increasing with altitude and ceasing to be visible at about 300 000 km. This most probably shows the X-ray signature of a coronal mass ejection (CME). A second one, with gradually decreasing speed, might represent very high rising flare loops. A third one continues to rise slowly with a constant speed up to 230 000 km (and up to 285 000 km after the speed begins to decay), and this is the giant arch. This event, including an arch revival on November 4–5, is very similar to rising giant arches observed by the SMM on 6–7 November 1980. Other events of this kind were observed on 27–28 April 1992, 15 March 1993, and 4–6 November 1993, all seen above the solar limb, where it is much easier to identify them.The temperature in the brightest part of the arch of 2–3 November 1991 was increasing with its altitude, from 2 to 4 × 106 K, which seems to be an effect of slower cooling at lower densities. Under an assumption of line-of-sight thickness of 50 000 km, the emission measure indicates densities from 1.1 × 1010 cm–3 at an altitude of 150 000 km to 1.0 × 109 cm–3 at 245 000 km 11.5 hours later. It appears that the arch is composed of plasma of widely different temperatures, and that hot plasma rises faster than the cool component. Thus the whole arch expands upward, and its density gradient increases with time, which explains whyYohkoh images show only the lowest and coolest parts of the expanding structure. The whole arch may represent an energy in excess of 1031 erg, and more if conduction contributes to the arch cooling.We suggest that the rise of the arch is initiated by a CME which removes the magnetic field and plasma in the upper corona, and the coronal structures remaining below this cavity begin to expand into the vacuum left behind the CME. Geological sequestration of CO2 into depleted hydrocarbon reserviors or saline aquifers presents the enormous potential to reduce greenhouse gas emission
from fossil fuels. However, it may give rise to a complicated coupling physical and chemical process. One of the processes
is the hydro-mechanical impact of CO2 injection. During the injection project, the increase of pore pressures of storing formations can induce the instability,
which finally results in a catastrophic failure of disposal sites. This paper focuses mainly on the role of CO2-saturated water in the fracturing behavior of rocks. To investigate how much the dissolved CO2 can influence the pore pressure change of rocks, acoustic emission (AE) experiments were performed on sandstone and granite
samples under triaxial conditions. The main innovation of this paper is to propose a time dependent porosity method to simulate
the abrupt failure process, which is observed in the laboratory and induced by the pore pressure change due to the volume
dilatancy of rocks, using a finite element scheme associated with two-phase characteristics. The results successfully explained

This paper presents a simulation of three components of near-field ground shaking recorded during the main shock at three stations of the September 16, 1978, Tabas (M w = 7.4), Iran, earthquake, close to the causative fault. A hybrid method composed of a discrete wavenumber method developed by Bouchon (Bouchon in Bull Seismol Soc Am 71:959–971, 1981; Cotton and Coutant in Geophys J Int 128:676–688, 1997) and a stochastic finite-fault modeling based on a dynamic corner frequency proposed by Motazedian and Atkinson (Bull Seismol Soc Am 95:995–1010, 2005), modified by Assatourians and Atkinson (Bull Seismol Soc Am 97:935–1949, 2007), is used for generating the seismograms at low (0.1–1.0 Hz) and high frequencies (1.0–20.0 Hz), respectively. The results are validated by comparing the simulated peak acceleration, peak velocity, peak displacement, Arias intensity, the integral of velocity squared, Fourier spectrum and acceleration response spectrum on a frequency-by-frequency basis, the shape of the normalized integrals of acceleration and velocity squared, and the cross-correlation with the observed time-series data. Each characteristic is compared on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being perfect agreement. Also, the results are validated by comparing the simulated ground motions with the modified Mercalli intensity observations reported by reconnaissance teams and showed reasonable agreement. The results of the present study imply that the damage distribution pattern of the 1978 Tabas earthquake can be explained by the source directivity effect. 相似文献

Temporal and spatial variability of phytoplankton pigment concentrations in the Japan Sea are described, using monthly mean composite images of the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS). In order to describe the seasonal changes of pigment concentration from the results of the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis, we selected four areas in the south Japan Sea. The pigment concentrations in these areas show remarkable seasonal variations. Two annual blooms appear in spring and fall. The spring bloom starts in the Japan Sea in February and March, when critical depth (CRD) becomes equal to mixed layer depth (MLD). The spring bloom in the southern areas (April) occurs one month in advance of that in the northern areas (May). This indicates that the pigment concentrations in the southern areas may increase rapidly in comparison with the northern areas since the water temperature increases faster in spring in the southern than in the northern areas. The fall bloom appears first in the southwest region, then in the southeast and northeast regions, finally appearing in the northwest region. Fall bloom appears in November and December when MLD becomes equal to CRD. The fall bloom can be explained by deepening of MLD in the Japan Sea. The pigment concentrations in winter are higher than those in summer. The low pigment concentrations dominate in summer. 相似文献
