The two-dimensional spatial distribution of precious stones, such as diamonds in alluvial and coastal deposits, shows a high degree of clustering. Usually, stones tend to gather in relatively small clusters or traps, made by potholes, gullies, or small depressions in the rough bedcock. Therefore, when taking samples of such deposits, discrete distributions of the number of stones counted in each sample yield an extreme skewness. Most samples have no stones, whereas samples containing a few hundred stones are not unusual. This paper constructs a model and a method for fitting a new and general family of counting distributions based on the Neyman-Scott cluster model and the mixed Poisson process, which can be used to model a differing degree of clustering. General recursion equations for the discrete probabilities of these distributions are derived. Application of this model to simulated data shows that information such as cluster size, number of point events per cluster, and number of clusters per measurement unit can be extracted easily from this model. Fitting the model to data of two real diamond deposits of a totally different nature—small rich clusters of Namibia versus larger but less rich clusters of Guinea—demonstrates its flexibility.  相似文献

A study was made of the applicability of three different techniques for equivalent dose (De) determination in the optical dating of quartz: the single‐aliquot regenerative‐dose technique (SAR), the single‐aliquot additive‐dose technique (SAAD) and the multiple‐aliquot additive‐dose technique (MAAD). For this purpose, quartz grains were extracted from a sequence of Upper Pleniglacial to Late‐glacial coversands exposed at the locality of Ossendrecht in the southwestern Netherlands, a site for which both radiocarbon and earlier luminescence dates are available, providing independent age control. Upon testing the different assumptions underlying each of the three OSL techniques investigated, the SAR protocol was found to be the technique of choice. The optical ages obtained with this protocol were in good agreement with the chronostratigraphical position of the sediments investigated and with the available chronostratigraphical information on the same and equivalent deposits. This confirms the suitability of the SAR technique for dating coversands. Furthermore, a small laboratory intercomparison of SAR‐based De determinations yielded results that were in fair overall agreement. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Late Pleistocene loess‐palaeosol sequences are widespread in the Vojvodina region, with thicknesses reaching a maximum of about 20 m. Our investigations include more than 40 of these loess sections. Geochronology of the last glacial loess‐palaeosol sequences, based on luminescence dating and amino acid racemisation, provides correlations between Upper Pleistocene loess‐palaeosol sediments in Vojvodina and comparable deposits at other European localities. Sedimentary logs of magnetic susceptibility, grain‐size measurements and carbonate content, combined with malacological evidence, indicate two main relatively cold and arid phases during the last glacial period, related to intensive accumulation of loess units L1L1 and L1L2, as well as many brief episodes of dry and windy climatic conditions, suggesting a possible relationship with cold events recorded in the North Atlantic region. Generally, late Pleistocene climate in the region was dry and relatively warm, compared with glacial period sites in central Europe, and was characterised by sharp differences between glacial and interglacial modes. New data and interpretations presented in this study emphasise the significance of loess‐palaeosol sequences in Vojvodina for the reconstruction of the temporal and spatial evolution of late Pleistocene palaeoclimate in this part of Europe. Cryoturbated organic beds and channel fills, intercalated with sandy and gravelly fluvial units, have been studied in an opencast brown‐coal mine near Nochten (Niederlausitz), eastern Germany. The fluvial–aeolian sequence covers parts of the Early, Pleni‐ and Late‐glacial. The detailed chronology is based on 11 radiocarbon and 12 OSL dates, covering the period between ca. 100 kyr and 11 kyr BP. Basal peat deposits are correlated with an Early Weichselian interstadial. During this period boreal forests were present and minimum mean summer temperatures were > 13°C. Early Pleniglacial deposits are absent. The Middle and Late Pleniglacial environments were treeless and different types of tundra vegetation can be recognised. Minimum mean summer temperatures varied between 10 and 15°C. Vegetation and climate is reconstructed in detail for the periods around 34–38 kyr BP and 24–25 kyr BP. Around 34–38 ka, a mixture between a low shrub tundra and a cottongrass tussock–subshrub tundra was present. The botanical and sedimentological data suggest that from the Middle to the Late Pleniglacial, the climate became more continental, aridity and wind strength increased, and the role of a protecting winter snow cover decreased. Conditioning Surface-Based Geological Models to Well and Thickness Data   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
Geostatistical simulation methods aim to represent spatial uncertainty through realizations that reflect a certain geological concept by means of a spatial continuity model. Most common spatial continuity models are either variogram, training image, or Boolean based. In this paper, a more recent spatial model of geological continuity is developed, termed the event, or surface-based model, which is specifically applicable to modeling cases with complex stratigraphy, such as in sedimentary systems. These methods rely on a rule-based stacking of events, which are mathematically represented by two-dimensional thickness variations over the domain, where positive thickness is associated with deposition and negative thickness with erosion. Although it has been demonstrated that the surface-based models accurately represent the geological variation present in complex layered systems, they are more difficult to constrain to hard and soft data as is typically required of practical geostatistical techniques. In this paper, we develop a practical methodology for constraining such models to hard data from wells and thickness data interpreted from geophysics, such as seismic data. Our iterative methodology relies on a decomposition of the parameter optimization problem into smaller, manageable problems that are solved sequentially. We demonstrate this method on a real case study of a turbidite sedimentary basin.  相似文献

A Weichselian Late Pleniglacial fluvio-aeolian deposit has been investigated in the southern Netherlands. Three main structural lineaments have been distinguished: (1) very small, vertical platy structures (microjoints), in a parallel and a columnar configuration; (2) large joints and normal faults with minor displacement (‘Grubbenvorst type’), arranged in a conjugate fault-system; (3) large joints and normal faults (‘wedge-type’), located adjacent to ice-wedge casts. Since clay is absent, the occurrence of the vertical platy structures cannot be attributed to desiccation cracking. The vertical platy structures are interpreted as the result of thermal contraction cracking of a relatively thin layer, due to a sudden temperature drop. The large joints and normal faults of the Grubbenvorst type are the result of failure of the sediment due to the melting of the permafrost in the Late Pleniglacial, just before the formation of the Beuningen Gravel Bed. In other areas large periglacial convolutions have been formed during the same period. The normal faults and joints of the wedge type are more generally known. They are the result of failure of the sediment adjacent to a melting ice wedge.  相似文献

Simulated annealing simulation (SAS) is a flexible tool for generating stochastic simulations conditioned to data at various scales and precision. However, a number of important drawbacks exists: (1) SAS requires considerable CPU time, (2) it requires experience in setting the so-called cooling schedule to obtain convergence, and (3) its space of uncertainty is not well understood. In this paper, I propose a new simulated annealing method that guarantees histogram and variogram reproduction through the implementation of a novel perturbation mechanism. The novel perturbation method is based on the Metropolis–Hastings sampler for a Markov-type random field. This new annealing method allows removal of the histogram and variogram from the objective function in the simulated annealing procedure. Furthermore, for the proposed method one finds that (1) the uncertainty space can be quantified, (2) the convergence properties can be linked to convergence of stationary Markov chains, and (3) the convergence speed is improved over traditional simulated annealing.  相似文献

Because of the deep glacial incision, the Lower Tagus Valley hosts a sedimentary record since 20 000 cal BP, making this a unique site along the European Atlantic margin with respect to palaeogeographic and sea level changes. Based on nine cross-sections and 55 radiocarbon dates together with a newly created relative sea level curve, we constructed five palaeogeographic maps of the infill of the Lower Tagus Valley since 20 000 cal BP. We illustrate that relative sea level rise and fluvial sediment supply were the prime forcing factors determining the depositional history and palaeogeographic changes. Around 20 000 cal BP a deeply incised braided river existed, which was directly connected to the ocean across the narrow continental shelf. After that (12 000 cal BP) the gradually moister and warmer climate caused a change to a single-channel river. During the following period (12 000–7000 cal BP) relative sea level rise resulted in a transgression in the Lower Tagus Valley and the establishment of extensive tidal environments. After relative sea level rise had ended (7000 cal BP) the valley was progressively filled by a fluvial wedge and tidally influenced bayhead delta. Since 1000 cal BP the valley-fill history was dominated by increased sediment input due to human-induced degradation of catchment slopes. Generally, climate was of subordinate importance during the entire studied period, merely causing a single-channel river resulting from the change from the cold Heinrich event 1 to the temperate Bölling–Allerød interstadial. Despite the tectonic activity in the region, neotectonic uplift or subsidence was limited, as supported by the horizontal relative sea level curve since 7000 cal BP. Neotectonics played a minor role due to the large distance from the Fennoscandian ice sheet and the narrow continental shelf, which prohibited strong glacio- and hydro-isostatic movements.  相似文献

对黄土高原中部洛川黄土堆积进行了系统的粒度和磁化率测量,以黄土-古土壤中的粗颗粒组分,即>30μm颗粒的百分含量作为冬季风强度代用指标,根据一个独立的时间标尺,发现在145~165、240~280、320~350、390~440、600~640、860~890、900~930和1330~1400kaB.P.东亚冬季风强度存在千年尺度快速变化的特征,冬季风加强事件的持续时间在1.4~7.2ka之间,变化幅度也不相同;周期分析结果表明,这些古气候变化存在1.89~4.0ka之间的周期,由于时间标尺的精度还有待于进一步提高,在这里没有把冬季风强度变化与北大西洋沉积物记录的古气候事件进行对比,但是,实验结果证明在早、中更新世的某些阶段东亚冬季风强度存在快速变化的现象  相似文献

Four synthetic lepidocrocite samples with a significant difference in crystallinity have been studied by the 57Fe Mössbauer effect technique at temperatures ranging between 12 K and 360 K. In the magnetically ordered region, the spectra display broad hyperfine field distributions, the profile of which could be derived numerically. In a broad transition region of approximately 20 K, an additional doublet must be included in the fitting model. From Mössbauer thermoscanning measurements at zero-velocity and with and without the application of an external magnetic field, it is found that the doublet is due to Fe3+ species in a paramagnetic state. Neither the hyperfine field nor the Néel temperature distributions are markedly affected by the crystallinity. In the pure paramagnetic state, the broadened doublets are best described by a distribution of quadrupole splittings in the range 0.3–1.9 mm/s. By numerical manipulations of the derived probability profiles it was possible to distinguish between the iron species in the outer surface layers of the γ-FeOOH particles and those in the innermost layers, the relative amount of each being correlated with the measured surface areas. The centre shift is quite uniform and its temperature dependence, determined in detail for one of the samples, is perfectly described by the Debije approximation for the second-order Doppler shift. From the obtained Debije temperature, a Mössbauer fraction f of 0.79 at room temperature was calculated, which is in good agreement with the results obtained for a reference lepidocrocite/hematite mixture. Finally, line shape simulations aimed to explain the external field spectrum at 180 K provided strong indications that both the sign and the asymmetry parameter of the electric field gradient are non-uniform as well.  相似文献
