A New Plankton Sampler for Coral Reefs 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. A new self-contained Horizontal Plankton Sampler (HOPLASA) collects near-reef plankton that is not captured by conventional net tows and emergence traps. An electrical motor-propeller assembly inside a large acrylic cylinder drives water past an in-line flowmeter and through a rigidly attached plankton net. When positioned in the coral reef environment this sampling gear filters known quantities of bottom water. Larvae and developmental stages of many invertebrates and some fishes that never migrate to upper water layers but constitute an important fraction of the food chain are captured. Larvae of sponges, corals, and gorgonians, the most important animal reef builders, are obtained live and undamaged and can be cultured in the laboratory for identification after metamorphosis. 相似文献

A bottom-mounted sonar operating at 40 kHz has been used to measure the variation of bottom acoustic scattering over extended time intervals at two shallow sites as part of the Coastal Benthic Boundary Layer Special Research Project. The acoustic data were analyzed using a correlation method that measures the spatial and temporal dependence of benthic change. The rate of decorrelation was two orders of magnitude more rapid at a sandy site near Panama City, Florida, USA, than at a silty site in Eckernförde Bay, Germany, and both sites were characterized by hot spots or localized regions of activity. 相似文献

Torque measurements are made by divers with a vane apparatus to a sediment depth of 136 cm in the high-porosity, gassy sediments of Eckernförde Bay. Corrected shear strength values calculated from torque measurements are quite variable in the Eckernförde Bay sediments, varying from less than 0.5 kPa in the top 10 cm of sediment to 4–5 kPa at 136 cm sediment depth. Variability increases markedly below 60 cm sediment depth, probably because of the presence of methane gas bubbles within the sediment fabric. 相似文献

TheConvectiveDiffusionObserved byRemoteSensors (CONDORS) field experiment conducted at the Boulder Atmospheric Observatory used innovative techniques to obtain three-dimensional mappings of plume concentration fields, /Q, of oil fog detected by lidar and chaff detected by Doppler radar. It included extensive meteorological measurements and, in 1983, tracer gases measured at a single sampling arc. Final results from ten hours of elevated and surface release data are summarized here. Large normal fault zones are characterized by intense fracturing and hydrothermal alteration. Displacement is localized in a slip zone of cataclasite, breccia and phyllonite surrounding corrugated and striated fault surfaces. Slip zone rock grades into fractured, but less comminuted and hydrothermally altered rock in the transition zone, which in turn grades abruptly into the wall rock. Fracturing and fluid flow is episodic, because permeability generated during earthquakes is destroyed by hydrothermal processes during the time between earthquakes.Fracture networks are described by a fracture fabric tensor (F). The permeability tensor (k) is used to estimate fluid transport properties if the trace of F is sufficiently large. Variations in elastic moduli and seismic velocities between fault zone and wall rock are estimated as a function of fracture density (). Fracturing decreases elastic moduli in the transition zone by 50–100% relative to the country rock, and similar or even greater changes presumably occur in the slip zone.P-andS-wave velocity decrease, andV

Low modulus rock surrounding fault surfaces increases the probability of exceeding the critical slip distance required for the onset of unstable slip during rupture initiation. Boundaries between low modulus fault rock and higher modulus wall rock also act as rupture guides and enhance rupture acceleration to dynamic velocity. Hydrothermal alteration at temperatures in excess of 300°C weakens the deeper parts of the fault zone by producingphyllitic mineral assemblages. Activities to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by biological soil or forest carbon sequestration predominantly utilize
currently known, readily implementable technologies. Many other greenhouse gas emission reduction options require future technological
development or must wait for turnover of capital stock. Carbon sequestration options in soils and forests, while ready to
go now, generally have a finite life, allowing use until other strategies are developed. This paper reports on an investigation
of the competitiveness of biological carbon sequestration from a dynamic and multiple strategy viewpoint. Key factors affecting
the competitiveness of terrestrial mitigation options are land availability and cost effectiveness relative to other options
including CO2 capture and storage, energy efficiency improvements, fuel switching, and non-CO2 greenhouse gas emission reductions. The analysis results show that, at lower CO2 prices and in the near term, soil carbon and other agricultural/forestry options can be important bridges to the future,
initially providing a substantial portion of attainable reductions in net greenhouse gas emissions, but with a limited role
in later years. At higher CO2 prices, afforestation and biofuels are more dominant among terrestrial options to offset greenhouse gas emissions. But in
the longer run, allowing for capital stock turnover, options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the energy system and

The Agriculture and Land Use (AgLU) model is a top-downeconomic model with just enough structure to simulate globalland-use change and the resulting carbon emissions over one century.These simulations are done with and without a carbon policy representedby a positive carbon price. Increases in the carbon price createincentives for production of commercial biomass that affect thedistribution of other land types and, therefore, carbon emissionsfrom land-use change. Commercial biomass provides a link betweenthe agricultural and energy systems. The Integrated Assessmentof Climate Protection Strategies (ICLIPS) core model uses AgLUto provide estimates of carbon emissions from land-use changeas one component of total greenhouse gas emissions. Each majorland-use type is assigned an average carbon density used to calculatea total carbon stock; carbon emissions from land-use change arecalculated as the change in carbon stock between time periods.Significant carbon emissions from land-use change are presenteven in the reference scenario. The advent of very high-resolution satellite programs and digital airborne cameras with ultra high resolution offers new possibilities for very accurate mapping of the environment. With these sensors of improved spatial resolution, however, the user community faces a new problem in the analysis of this type of image data. Standard classification techniques have to be augmented with appropriate analysis procedures because the required homogeneity of landuse/landcover classes can no longer be achieved by the integration effect of large pixel sizes (e.g., 20–80 m). New intelligent techniques will have to be developed that make use of multisensor approaches, geographic information system (GIS) integration and context-based interpretation schemes.The ideal goal should be that GIS ‘intelligence’ (e.g., object and analysis models) should be used to automate the classification process. In return, GIS objects can be extracted from a remote sensing image to update the GIS database. This paper presents the development of an automated procedure for biotope type mapping from ultra high-resolution airborne scanner data (HRSC-A). The hierarchical procedure incorporates a priori GIS information, a digital surface model (DSM) and multispectral image data. The results of this study will serve as a basis for a continuous environmental monitoring process in the tidally influenced region of the Elbe River, Germany. 相似文献
