The Newtonian viscosity of synthetic rhyolitic liquids with 0.15-5.24 wt% dissolved water was determined in the interval between 580 and 1640 °C and pressures of 1 atm and 5-25 kbar. Measurements were performed by combining static and accelerated (up to 1000g) falling sphere experiments on water-bearing samples, with high temperature concentric cylinder experiments on 0.15 wt% H2O melts. These methods allowed viscosity determinations between 102 and 107 Pa s, and cover the complete range of naturally occurring magmatic temperatures, pressures, and H2O-contents for rhyolites.Our viscosity data, combined with those from previous studies, were modeled by an expression based on the empirical Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation, which describes viscosities and derivative properties (glass transition temperature Tg, fragility m, and activation volume of viscous flow Va) of silicic liquids as a function of P-T-X(H2O). The fitted expressions do not account for composition-dependent parameters other than X(H2O) and reproduce the entire viscosity database for silicic liquids to within 3.0% average relative error on log η (i.e. std. error of estimate of 0.26 log units).The results yield the expected strong decrease of viscosity with temperature and water content, but show variable pressure dependencies. Viscosity results to be strongly affected by pressure at low pressures; an effect amplified at low temperatures and water contents. Fragility, as a measure for the deviation from Arrhenian behavior, decreases with H2O-content but is insensitive to pressure. Activation volumes are always largely negative (e.g., less than −10 cm3/mol) and increase strongly with H2O-content. Variations in melt structure that may account for the observed property variations are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of the present work is to compile and update a catalogue of the instrumentally recorded earthquakes in Egypt, with uniform and homogeneous source parameters as required for the analysis of seismicity and seismic hazard assessment. This in turn requires a detailed analysis and comparison of the properties of different available sources, including the distribution of events with time, the magnitude completeness, and the scaling relations between different kinds of magnitude reported by different agencies. The observational data cover the time interval 1900–2004 and an area between 22°–33.5° N and 25°–36° E. The linear regressions between various magnitude types have been evaluated for different magnitude ranges. Using the best linear relationship determined for each available pair of magnitudes, as well as those identified between the magnitudes and the seismic moment, we convert the different magnitude types into moment magnitudes M W, through a multi-step conversion process. Analysis of the catalogue completeness, based on the M W thus estimated, allows us to identify two different time intervals with homogeneous properties. The first one (1900–1984) appears to be complete for M W ≥ 4.5, while the second one (1985–2004) can be considered complete for magnitudes M W ≥ 3.  相似文献

祁连造山带被托菜南山-了高山构造带及宗务隆山-贵得构造带分为北祁连、中祁连及南祁连构造带。什川岩基位于中祁连构造带东部,由闪长岩、斜长花岗岩、二长花岗岩组成;对二长花岗岩进行U-Pb单颗粒锆石微区LA-ICP-MS同位素测定,获得444.6Ma及414.3Ma两组加权平均年龄,前者代表岩石的形成年龄,后者代表构造热事件年龄。二长花岗岩主量元素W(SiO_2)=68.66%~80.77%,w(K_2O)/w(Na_2O)>1和A/CNK介于0.95~1.21间,总体为钾质钙碱性过铝质花岗岩。岩石富集LILE元素(K、Th、Rb、Ba等),亏损HFSE元素(Ta、Nb、Y等);稀土元素总量较高(∑REE多介于109.05×10~(-6)~322.66×10~(-6)),轻重稀土强烈分馏(∑LREE/∑HREE介于7.92~31.68),稀土元素分配模式为轻稀土富集型,具中等-强Eu负异常(δEu=0.26~0.58)。岩石矿物组合及岩石地球化学特征共同表明,什川岩基为中上地壳泥砂质岩石部分熔融而成,形成温度较低,为加厚地壳拆沉熔融成因。这为祁连造山带构造演化及其深部动力学机制研究提供了新的资料。  相似文献

This paper examines the spatial and temporal variability in the volumetric sediment balance of Allen Creek marsh, a macro-tidal salt marsh in the Bay of Fundy. The volumetric balance was determined as the balance of inputs of sediments and organic matter via accretion on the marsh surface and outputs of sedimentary material primarily due to erosion of the marsh margin. Changes in marsh surface elevation were measured at 20 buried plates and 3 modified sediment elevation tables from 1996–2002, and detailed margin surveys were conducted in 1997, 1999 and 2001 using a differential global positioning system. Changes in surface area were calculated using GIS overlay analysis and used in conjunction with accretion and erosion data to derive volumetric estimates of gains and losses of sedimentary material in the marsh system.Currently the volumetric sediment balance at Allen Creek marsh is positive. However the processes of erosion and accretion demonstrate seasonal, annual and spatial variability. Inputs to the system include deposition on the marsh surface from sediment laden waters and from ice rafting of sediments. Sediment is deposited onto the marsh surface year round, even during the winter when vegetation cover is sparse, and the amount of deposition in general is not significantly correlated with the frequency of tidal inundations. Based on the data from 1996 to 2002, the mid and high marsh zones experience mean accretion rates of approximately 1.4 cm year 1 whereas accretion rates in the low marsh region are statistically significantly lower (0.8 cm year 1). The absolute amount of accretion varies between seasons and from year to year. The main loss to the marsh is through erosion of the marsh margin cliffs which can remove a comparatively large volume of sedimentary material in one mass wasting event and which also decreases the vegetated surface area available for deposition from sediment laden waters. The volume of material removed from the marsh margin almost tripled between 1997 (169 m3) and 2001 (502 m3) following breaching of the side of a tidal creek channel, altering the patterns of margin erosion and deposition in the marsh system. During this time, however, other sheltered areas of the marsh system, such as along the tidal creek banks, showed evidence of new vegetation growth, increasing the amount of vegetated surface area available for deposition.The processes of erosion and deposition on the marsh surface exhibit considerable spatial variability, with different regions of the marsh being more or less sensitive to seasonal variability in the dominant controls influencing sediment deposition and erosion in this system, namely wave activity, vegetation, ice and water depths. A key factor in predicting how a marsh will evolve and respond to a number of different controls, e.g. sea-level rise or reduced sediment supply, is to quantify both accretion of the marsh surface and erosion of the marsh margin, evaluating the marsh system as a volumetric whole. This study demonstrates that a marsh system should be assessed in three dimensions rather than simply as a surface of accumulation. This is particularly important for open coastal marshes exposed to the erosive action of waves.  相似文献

The morphodynamics of inlets and ebb-tidal deltas reflect the interaction between wave and tidal current-driven sediment transport and significantly influence the behaviour of adjacent shorelines. Studies of inlet morphodynamics have tended to focus on sand-dominated coastlines and reference to gravel-dominated or ‘gravel-rich’ inlets is rare. This work characterises and conceptualises the morphodynamics of a meso-tidal sand–gravel inlet at the mouth of the Deben estuary, southeast England. Behaviour of the inlet and ebb-tidal delta over the last 200 yr is analysed with respect to planform configuration and bathymetry. The estuary inlet is historically dynamic, with ebb-tidal shoals exhibiting broadly cyclic behaviour on a 10 to 30 yr timescale. Quantification of inlet parameters for the most recent cycle (1981–2003) indicate an average ebb delta volume of 1 × 106 m3 and inlet cross-sectional area of 775 m2. Bypassing volumes provide a direct indicator of annual longshore sediment transport rate over this most recent cycle of 30–40 × 103 m3 yr 1. Short-term increases in total ebb-tidal delta volume are linked to annual variability in the north to northeasterly wind climate. The sediment bypassing mechanism operating in the Deben inlet is comparable to the ‘ebb delta breaching’ model of FitzGerald [FitzGerald, D.M., 1988. Shoal bypassing in mixed energy inlets: geomorphic variables and empirical predictions for nine South Carolina inlets. J. Coast. Res., 17, (2), 280–291.]) shows the Deben system to be significantly smaller yet characterised by a longer bypassing cycle than would be expected for its tidal prism. A mesoscale iron-enrichment study (SEEDS II) was carried out in the western subarctic Pacific in the summer of 2004. The iron patch was traced for 26 days, which included observations of the development and the decline of the bloom by mapping with sulfur hexafluoride. The experiment was conducted at almost the same location and the same season as SEEDS (previous iron-enrichment experiment). However, the results were very different between SEEDS and SEEDS II. A high accumulation of phytoplankton biomass (∼18 mg chl m−3) was characteristic of SEEDS. In contrast, in SEEDS II, the surface chlorophyll-a accumulation was lower, 0.8 to 2.48 mg m−3, with no prominent diatom bloom. Photosynthetic competence in terms of F v/F m for the total phytoplankton community in the surface waters increased after the iron enrichments and returned to the ambient level by day 20. These results suggest that the photosynthetic physiology of the phytoplankton assemblage was improved by the iron enrichments and returned to an iron-stressed condition during the declining phase of the bloom. Pico-phytoplankton (<2 μm) became dominant in the chlorophyll-a size distribution after the bloom. We observed a nitrate drawdown of 3.8 μM in the patch (day 21), but there was no difference in silicic acid concentration between inside and outside the patch. Mesozooplankton (copepod) biomass was three to five times higher during the bloom-development phase in SEEDS II than in SEEDS. The copepod biomass increased exponentially. The grazing rate estimation indicates that the copepod grazing prevented the formation of an extensive diatom bloom, which was observed in SEEDS, and led to the change to a pico-phytoplankton dominated community towards the end of the experiment.  相似文献

The radiocarbon content of scallops aquiculturally suspended and grown in coastal sea, Funka Bay, were determined. While the 14C values of carbonate shells coincided with that of ambient seawater, those of soft tissues were smaller than the seawater value and varied rather widely. To clarify the cause of this variation, we further divided the soft tissues of composite scallops into each organ and determined their radiocarbon content. The results show that only the 14C of adductor (Kaibashira in Japanese) of scallops was significantly smaller than the others, those of gill and mantle coincided to that of seawater. This strange finding cannot be explained by the present knowledge on the dietary sources of scallops and the present theory of isotopic fractionation, unless any unknown physiological or oceanographical process determines the radiocarbon content of the organisms.  相似文献

Relation between internal waves with short time scale and density distribution near the shelf break in the East China Sea is studied utilizing moored current meters, thermometers and conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) casts. A well developed pycnocline was frequently observed around 150–200 m depth near the shelf break accompanied with the development of internal waves with short time scale. During the cruise in May 1998, the intensified internal wave motion with short time scale and the distinct offshore flow were observed just below the lower pycnocline, which shoaled and extended above the shelf area. It is suggested that vertical mixing generated by amplified internal waves would produce cross-shelf ageostophic density current around the pycnocline. During the cruise in May 1999, on the other hand, the lower pycnocline was located offshore below the shelf break, and the internal wave motion was amplified just above the lower pycnocline. In this case, the offshore flow should be generated above the lower pycnocline, but vertical profiles of current velocity were not obtained because acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data were not available around the lower pycnocline.  相似文献

An 8-year record of N fluxes and δ15N of sinking particles from the deep southern Bay of Bengal, northern Indian Ocean, is presented. Fluxes and δ15N vary between ∼0.1 and 3 mg m−2 day−1 and ∼2‰ and 8‰, respectively. The seasonal variation is determined mainly by oceanographic processes coupled to the Indian monsoon system. The annual pattern of δ15N is characterized by minima during spring intermonsoon (∼March–May), when nutrient inputs to the euphotic zone should be low because of stratification, and lighter nitrate/particulate matter is expected to be advected from the central Bay. Highest δ15N are associated with peak fluxes during southwest monsoon (∼June–September), when the southern Bay comes under the influence of the SW monsoon current, which appears to advect particulate matter with distinctly higher δ15N. The impact of this process, however, varies interannually under the influence of factors such as ENSO and the Indian Dipole Mode. Weakened advection leads to relatively low N fluxes and reduced δ15N. The data highlight the necessity of multi-annual studies to comprehend the natural variability of a system.  相似文献

The mineralogy of eight gravity cores recovered between Sierra Leone and 25°W longitude has been examined in an investigation of the provenance of the recent sediments in the eastern Equatorial Atlantic. X-ray analyses show that the principal mineral components are calcite, quartz, feldspar, kaolinite, illite and montmorillonite. One core taken from the upper continental slope off Freetown also contains gibbsite, a product of intense tropical weathering. Biogenic material forms the dominant component of most sections of the cores but it is clear from the abundance of quartz, kaolinite and freshwater diatoms that an aeolian supply of continental detritus has been important in the formation of the recent sediment cover. A significant contribution from volcanic sources can be recognised to the west of the Sierra Leone Rise. The occurrence of calcareous turbidites in two cores from the St. Paul's Fracture Zone and from the basin west of the Sierra Leone Rise appears to be a reflection of recent tectonic activity.  相似文献
