Historic maps, photographs, and channel cross-sections show that the channel of the Carmel River underwent massive bank erosion, channel migration, and aggradation in a major flood in 1911, then narrowed and incised by 1939. The channel was stable until 1978 and 1980, when bank erosion affected some reaches but not others. The narrowing and incision were in response to a lack of major floods after 1914 and construction in 1921 of a dam that cut off sediment supply from the most actively eroding half of the basin. Localized erosion in 1978 and 1980 occurred during low magnitude events along reaches whose bank strength had been reduced by devegetation. These events illustrate that the stability of a fluvial system can be disrupted either by application of a large erosive force in a high magnitude event (the 1911 flood) or in a low magnitude event, by reducing the resistance to erosion (bank devegetation). The Carmel River is a potentially unstable system. Its discharge and slope characteristics place it near the threshold between meandering and braided. On the Lower Carmel, the presence of bank vegetation can make the difference between a narrow, stable meandering channel and a wide shifting channel with braided reaches. 相似文献

A meteorological tower significantly modifies the air flow, the mean windspeed and wind direction as well as the turbulencestructure of the air. Suchchanges can be noticed in particular in the wake region of the tower.Measurementson the 200 m tower ofForschungszentrum Karlsruhewere carried outusing Solent sonic anemometers in the lee of the towerand cup anemometers on both sides.In the wake region, spectral energydensity is increased in the high-frequency range. Superposition of this disturbance spectrum on the undisturbedspectrum yields a `knee' in the resulting spectrum. In the case of low turbulence intensity with stable stratification,a plateau with a constant energy content is observed in front of the knee.This effect is caused by the new production of turbulence energy from the mean flow as well as by an energy transfer fromlarger to smaller vortices. Power spectra in strongly stable conditionsshow a more rapid decrease of intensity in the region where the inertialsubrange is expected.The relevant scales of wake turbulence are derived from the maximum of the disturbance spectrum.Locations of the high-frequency peak do not depend on atmospheric stability,but are controlled mainly by mean wind speed.Apart from the reduction of the mean wind speed, the spectra and cospectra exhibit a strong anisotropy for such cases.The results demonstrate the significant influence of a tower on turbulence spectra in the wake region. 相似文献

In the Ussuri-Khanka depression of Primorye, the Quaternary alluvial-lacustrine and lacustrine sedimentogenesis progressed under conditions of transgressive accumulation in response to the depression tectonic subsidence and recurrent climatic fluctuations. The alluvial dams and irregular accumulation are proved to have been the leading factors of lakes’ formation within the depression. As is shown, fluctuations of the water level in limnic reservoirs depended on the climatic changes. New data considered in this work confirm the lacustrine genesis of a greater part of the Middle Pleistocene-Holocene sedimentary succession in the Khanka depression. Two transgressive phases, when the water level in the lakes rose by 1.5–2.0 m above the present one, are established for the Subboreal. The general conclusion is that the mesorhythmic structure of the sedimentary succession in the Ussuri-Khanka depression reflects the influence of climatic fluctuations in the Late Cenozoic. 相似文献

Spatially distributed hydrologic models can be effectively utilized for flood event simulation over basins where a complex system of reservoirs affecting the natural flow regime is present. Flood peak attenuation through mountain reservoirs can, in fact, mitigate the impact of major floods in flood‐prone areas of the lower river valley. Assessment of this effect for a complex reservoir system is performed with a spatially distributed hydrologic model where the surface runoff formation and the hydraulic routing through each reservoir and the river system are performed at a fine spatial and time resolution. The Toce River basin is presented as a case study, because of the presence of 14 active hydroelectric dams that affect the natural flow regime. A recent extreme flood event is simulated using a multi‐realization kriging method for modelling the spatial distribution of rainfall. A sensitivity analysis of the key elements of the distributed hydrologic model is also performed. The flood hydrograph attenuation is assessed. Several possible reservoir storage conditions are used to characterize the initial condition of each reservoir. A disaggregation method used by the UK water industry to disaggregate simulated hourly data to the 5-min time-scale is examined using data from Heathrow (London). This analysis shows the shortcomings of this algorithm, both in reproducing the temporal structure of rainfall depths and generating extreme events. An alternative method is proposed, based upon a random cascade with a log-Poisson generator. This is a parsimonious model requiring only two parameters per season. It is shown to provide a clear improvement upon the existing disaggregator, both in terms of temporal structure and extreme behaviour. It could thus be a powerful tool for urban hydrology which requires data at fine time-scale for design purposes and simulation studies. The utility of such a tool depends upon its potential for operational use, i.e., for implementation without any fine-scale data. The model's performance is found to be maintained when hourly rainfall time series are the only available data. 相似文献
