Over the past two decades, neoliberal reforms, soaring commodity prices and heightened global resource demands have led to significant growth in extractive industry investment across sub-Saharan Africa. A surge of investment has triggered a variety of responses in mineral-rich communities – from outright rejection, to protest over labour conditions, to acceptance in anticipation of gainful employment. Drawing on recent research carried out in Kono District in Sierra Leone, this article critically explores these contrasting responses to mining activities, by focussing on how youth perceive and respond to extractive industry expansion. In doing so, the paper broadens understanding of why youth perceptions of mining investment differ, and illuminates the various factors underlying a diverse range of responses to the expansion of extractive industries. The focus on youth and its heterogeneity as a social category has important policy implications and the paper makes a contribution to understanding the dynamics and diversity of youth livelihood strategies in resource rich developing countries. In making a distinction between autonomous spaces of community-led development 'from below' and corporate controlled spaces of development 'from above', the article reflects on how youth perceptions of extractive industry expansion may also be influencing the ways in which mining companies understand and fashion their business and social responsibility strategies. 相似文献

地下采煤通常会引起地表严重开裂,甚至发生滑坡、崩塌等地质灾害,采动坡体的稳定性研究一直是工程实际关心的问题。本文以贵州省都匀市煤洞坡采动坡体为例,在斜坡破坏机制分析基础上,采用组合楔形块体原理构建了采动坡体稳定性系数计算方程,并从实验、经验类比、采空率等方面对采动坡体的强度指标进行了综合取值,计算了采动坡体在天然、饱水及裂隙水作用下的安全系数。结果表明:煤洞坡山体是处于稳定状态的,这与坡体上的裂缝位移监测成果是相符的。但在长时间降雨或暴雨情况下,煤洞坡山体稳定性就会逐渐变差,甚至发生滑动; 坡体稳定性安全系数随内摩擦角的降低而降低,随裂隙水充水高度的增加而降低; 一旦后缘块体挤压前缘块体时,就会存在一个安全系数急剧降低的阀值。从裂缝水柱高度与降雨渗入裂缝的雨水量关系出发,建立了裂缝水柱高与降雨量之间关系式。经计算当降雨量(短时间内)超过192mm,斜坡就会失稳。 相似文献

The classical influence function method is widely used in mining subsidence prediction, but its use is typically limited to predicting the subsidence associated with horizontal stratiform underground mining when the ground surface is flat. By investigating the topography influence on subsidence under simplified mining conditions, this study attempts to improve the original influence function method to take topographic variations into account. New asymmetrical influence functions are used to simulate element subsidence. Integrating this asymmetrical approach into the influence function method increases the realism of subsidence computation when compared to the numerical simulation results. The maximum subsidence value and influence angle got from field data are introduced into the improved method, then two field subsidence cases are studied and acceptable comparison results are achieved. The right to food is increasingly evoked by a range of actors, but there is not sufficient critical analysis of distinct interpretations of what this right means in practice. Through examination of a mineral extraction project with agricultural implications, this article explores diverse human rights narratives and illuminates associated corporate efforts to minimize recognition of food as a fundamental right. A British mining company proposes the Phulbari open pit coal mine in an agriculturally important region of Bangladesh. Highly contested by affected populations, clashes in 2006 between the police and protestors turned deadly in the area. In February 2012, a group of UN Special Rapporteurs cautioned the Government of Bangladesh regarding human rights violations associated with the planned mine. They warned that the project would displace hundreds of thousands of people, while destroying fertile agricultural land. In contrast, an ongoing publicity campaign by the corporation attempts to promote their intervention as a positive step, fully compliant with international human rights and corporate social responsibility standards. Taking this case as an exemplar, the article illuminates the pursuit of mining profit and the distinct use of human rights narratives by corporations and UN Special Rapporteurs. These diverse actors represent the layering of voices weighing in on mineral extraction and associated right to food concerns. Collectively, these layered narratives represent a new terrain for the promotion and contestation of mining and highlight the need to scrutinize mining practices in light of social responsibility and human rights claims being voluntary and self-regulated. 相似文献
