Stream response to subsidence from underground coal mining in central Utah   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
 Short-term geomorphic and hydrologic effects of subsidence induced by longwall mining under Burnout Creek, Utah were evaluated. During the year after longwall mining, 0.3–1.5 m of subsidence was measured near impacted reaches of the mountain stream channel. The major channel changes that occurred in a 700-m reach of Burnout Creek that was subsided from 1992 to 1993 were: (1) increase in lengths of cascades and to a lesser extent glides; (2) increases in pool length, numbers and volumes; (3) increase in median particle diameter of bed sediment in pools; and (4) some constriction in channel geometry. Most of the changes appeared short-lived, with channel recovery approaching pre-mining conditions by 1994. In a 300-m reach of the South Fork that was subsided from 1993 to 1994, only channel constriction was observed, although any impacts on pool morphology may have been confounded by heavy grazing in the riparian reaches during the dry summer of 1994. Similar near-channel sedimentation and loss of pool volume between 1993 and 1994 were noted throughout Burnout Creek and in adjacent, unmined James Creek. Habitat degradation in river ecosystems has considerably increased over the past decades, resulting in detrimental effects on aquatic and riparian communities. During the last two decades, the value of large wood as a resource for river restoration and recovery has been increasingly documented. However, post-project appraisal of the associations between restored large wood, morphological complexity and river ecology as a result of river restoration is extremely rare and thus scientific knowledge is essential. To investigate restored wood-induced morphological response and sediment complexity in an overwidened reach along a low gradient lowland river (River Bure, UK), two sub-reaches containing 12 jams initiated by wood emplacement in 2008 and 2010 and a sub-reach free of wood were studied. Wood surveys recording the dimensions and number of wood pieces in jams, geomorphological mapping of the reach illustrating the spatial distribution of features in and around the jams and in a section free of wood, and sediment sampling (analysed for particle size, organic content and plant propagule abundance) of five recurring patch types surrounding each jam (two wood-related patches and three representing the broader river environment) were performed. Wood jams partially spanned the river channel and contained large pieces of wood that created more open structures than naturally-formed wood jams. Where no wood was introduced, the channel remains wide and the gravel bed is buried by sand and finer sediment. In the restored reaches, fine sediment has accumulated in and around the wood jams and has been stabilised by vegetation colonisation, enhancing flow velocities in the narrowed channel sufficiently to mobilise fine sediment and expose the gravel bed. Sediment analysis reveals sediment fining with time since wood emplacement, largely achieved within the two wood-related patch types. Fine sediment retained around the wood shows a relatively higher plant propagule content than other patch types, suitable for sustaining plant succession as the vegetated side bars aggrade. Although channel narrowing and morphological adjustment has occurred surprisingly rapidly in this low energy, over-widened reach following wood introduction (2–4 years), sustaining the recovery in the longer term to suitably support flora and fauna communities depends on the continued delivery of wood by ensuring a natural supply of sufficiently large wood pieces from riparian trees both upstream and within the reach.  相似文献

青藏高原的高精度人工源深部地震探测发现:壳-幔边界(Moho)并非是一物理学上的“刚性”界面,它不仅起伏变化强烈,极为凹凸不平,而且被一系列规模不一,产状各异的深大断裂所切割,故必然会导致复杂的地表和深部物质运移动力学响应的复杂化.在常见的通道流模型中,一般均设定下地壳与上地幔之间为一平缓界面,在数值模拟工作中亦常简化为平滑的约束界面.为此,基于青藏高原实际资料提取的壳、幔介质平均速度模型,采用黏弹性数值模型讨论Moho界面起伏变换样式对通道流模型产生的响应.研究结果表明:(1)通道流效应的影响仅限于小区域内,当Moho面存在起伏样式变化时,确会对通道流产生影响,Moho界面的起伏增强了下地壳和岩石圈地幔的同步运动效应,但是其影响范围是有限的;(2)Moho界面起伏形态变化对地表和Moho界面水平位移产生的影响各异,在Moho界面发生错断的地方,呈现为地表水平位移开始发生明显加速减小的地方,即地表与深部介质水平位移解耦,模型深部动力学效应与地表的响应并非为局部性效应,而至少体现出区域性的响应.  相似文献

中国海陆莫霍面及深部地壳结构特征研究是东亚地区宏观构造格架研究中的重点内容之一.本文以地震测深等数据为约束信息,以重力数据为基础,通过分区计算,反演了中国海陆莫霍面深度.依据地壳性质与莫霍面深度分布特征,划分了莫霍面深度梯级带与分区,并对各分区的莫霍面分布特点进行了归纳、总结.并选取阿尔泰—巴士海峡典型剖面进行了重、震反演,建立了密度结构.剖面上莫霍面深度和深部结构能够清晰地反映中国大陆"三横、两竖、两三角"构造格架中的两横和两竖,在昆仑—秦岭—大别以北的准噶尔地块和中朝地台莫霍面深度45~50 km,而其以南至贺兰山—龙门山之间的祁连、柴达木至松潘—甘孜的莫霍面呈"W"型起伏,莫霍面深度由祁连地块北部的50 km,加深至68 km,在柴达木盆地抬升至58 km,在阿尼玛卿山莫霍面降至68 km,向南逐渐抬升至四川盆地的44 km,经大兴安岭—太行山—武陵山这一竖的台阶式抬升至华南褶皱带的35 km,在江绍—南岭以南缓慢抬升至南海北部陆架区的20~25 km.在巴士海峡处南海沿马尼拉海沟向东俯冲,莫霍面形态较复杂.同时剖面上祁连—柴达木地块的中下地壳存在一个低速、低密度体,推测其可能是由于部分熔融引起的,是青藏高原东北缘壳内物质流动的通道.  相似文献

Superficial bottom samples were collected near diffusers of domestic sewage submarine outfalls at Araçá and Saco da Capela, São Sebastião Channel, Brazil. The goal of this study was to investigate the distribution and composition of live benthic foraminifera assemblages and integrate the results obtained with geochemical analyses to assess human-induced changes. According to the results obtained no environmental stress was observed near the Saco da Capela submarine outfall diffusers. The foraminifera assemblage is characterised by species typical of highly hydrodynamic environments, with well-oxygenated bottom waters and low nutrient contents. In contrast, near Araçá submarine outfall, organic enrichment was denoted by high phosphorus, sulphur and, to a lesser extent, total organic carbon content. Harmful influences on foraminifera could be identified by low richness and specific diversity, as well as the predominance of detritivore feeder species, which are associated with higher organic matter flux and low oxygen in the interstitial pore water.  相似文献

Submarine dune dynamics are controlled by tidal currents and wind forces. According to the relative influence of these forces and the nature of dune sediment, different bedform behaviors can be observed. The footprint of the different hydrodynamic agents is recorded into the internal architecture of dunes. This paper is concerned with bedforms that compose the thick sediment wedge located in the eastern English Channel, off the Bay of Somme. This sedimentary archive constitutes an interesting feature to achieve a better understanding of seabed sediment dynamics and its timeline building stages. The dynamics of large submarine dunes, which are organized in fields, are studied thanks to bathymetric and seismic data over the periods 1937–1993 and 1993–2007. Dune morphology presents low lee and stoss side slopes (on average 8° and 3°, respectively) and dune migration rate is not very high. Dune movements are in the direction of residual tidal currents, i.e. toward the east, with mean migration rates around 0·8 to 5 ± 0·25 m yr?1 and up to 6·6 ± 0·7 m yr?1, respectively, at multi‐decennial and decennial time scales. The dune internal architecture is complex with superimposed eastward prograding units, displaying locally opposite progradation. Second‐order discontinuities (dip of 0·5°–4° perpendicular to dune crests) constitute dune master bedding. By counting the number of second‐order reflectors between 1937–1993 and 1993–2007, the formation periodicity of these bounding surfaces is estimated to range from 4 to 18 years. These time intervals coincide with the long‐term tidal cyclicities and also with the inter‐annual to decennial variability of storm activity in northern Europe. Two theories were made to interpret the dune internal structures: the second‐order surfaces are interpreted either as the depositional surfaces corresponding to the marks of weak energy periods (weak tidal and storm action), or as erosive surfaces due to an opposite direction of dune migration provoked temporarily by exceptional storms from the northeast. The effect of channel size on residence time distributions (RTDs) of solute in rivers is investigated in this paper using tracer test data and the variable residence time (VART) model. Specifically, the investigation focuses on the influence of shear dispersion and hyporheic exchange on the shape of solute RTD, and how these two transport processes prevail in larger and smaller streams, respectively, leading to distinct tails of RTD. Simulation results show that (1) RTDs are dispersion-dependent and thereby channel-size (scale) dependent. RTDs increasing longitudinal dispersion coefficient. Small streams with negligible dispersion coefficient may display various types of RTD from upward curving patterns to a straight line (power-law distributions) and further to downward curving lognormal distributions when plotted in log–log coordinates. Moderate-sized rivers are transitional in terms of RTDs and commonly exhibit lognormal and power-law RTDs; (2) the incorporation of water and solute losses/gains in the VART model can improve simulation results and make parameter values more reasonable; (3) the ratio of time to peak concentration to the minimum mean residence time is equal to the recovery ratio of tracer. The relation provides a simple method for determining the minimum mean residence time; and (4) the VART model is able to reproduce various RTDs observed in rivers with 3–4 fitting parameters while no user-specified RTD functions are needed.  相似文献

Conditions for indentation and channelised flow are investigated with two-dimensional thermomechanical models of Alpine-type continental collision. The models mimic the development of an orogen at an initial central portion of weakened lithosphere 150 km wide, coherent with several geological reconstructions. We study in particular the role of lower crustal strength in developing peculiar geometries after 20 Ma of shortening at 1 cm/year. Crustal layers produce geometries of imbricate layers, which result from two contrasted mechanisms of either channelised ductile lateral flow or horizontal rigid-like indentation:
– Channelised lateral flow develops when the lateral lower crust has a viscosity less than 1021 Pa s, exhibiting velocities opposite to the direction of convergence. This mechanism of deformation produces subhorizontal shear zones at the boundaries between the lower crust and the more competent upper crust and lithospheric mantle. It is also associated with a topographic plateau that equilibrates with a wide (about 200 km) but quasi-constant crustal root about 50 km deep.
– In contrast, indentation occurs with lateral lower crust layers that have a viscosity greater than about 1023 Pa s, producing significant shortening and thickening of the central crust. In this case topography develops steep and narrow (around 100 km wide), associated with a thickened crust exceeding 60 km depth. A crustal-scale pop-up forms bounded by subvertical shear zones that root into the mantle lithosphere.

依据中国黄土分布区多沙曲流的水沙资料、河床平面形态和河床大断面测量资料分析认为:多沙河流来水变率影响河床断面形态和曲流发育;由于窄深的河槽是高含沙水流输沙的必要条件和结果,因此随着含沙量的增加,多沙河流河床断面形态首先出现变窄深的趋势,随着含沙量的进一步增加,水流造床能力增大,河槽会向宽浅方向调整;一定的河床冲淤强度有利于曲流的发育,随着含沙量的增加,多沙河流河床曲率存在先增加后减小的规律。  相似文献
