Anaerobic incubations of upland and wetland temperate forest soils from the same watershed were conducted under different moisture and temperature conditions. Rates of nitrous oxide (N2O) production by denitrification of nitrate () and the stable isotopic composition of the N2O (δ15N, δ18O) were measured. In all soils, N2O production increased with elevated temperature and soil moisture. At each temperature and moisture level, the rate of N2O production in the wetland soil was greater than in the upland soil. The 15N isotope effect (ε) (product − substrate) ranged from −20‰ to −29‰. These results are consistent with other published estimates of 15N fractionation from both single species culture experiments and soil incubation studies from different ecosystems.A series of incubations were conducted with 18O-enriched water (H2O) to determine if significant oxygen exchange (O-exchange) occurred between H2O and N2O precursors during denitrification. The exchange of H2O-O with nitrite () and/or nitric oxide (NO) oxygen has been documented in single organism culture studies but has not been demonstrated in soils prior to this study. The fraction of N2O-O derived from H2O-O was confined to a strikingly narrow range that differed between soil types. H2O-O incorporation into N2O produced from upland and wetland soils was 86% to 94% and 64% to 70%, respectively. Neither the temperature, soil moisture, nor the rate of N2O production influenced the magnitude of O-exchange. With the exception of one treatment, the net 18O isotope effect (εnet) (product-substrate) ranged from +37‰ to +43‰.Most previous studies that have reported 18O isotope effects for denitrification of to N2O have failed to account for the effect of oxygen exchange with H2O. When high amounts of O-exchange occur after fractionation during reductive O-loss, the 18O-enrichment is effectively lost or diminished and δ18O-N2O values will be largely dictated by δ18O-H2O values and subsequent fractionation. The process and extent of O-exchange, combined with the magnitude of oxygen isotope fractionation at each reduction step, appear to be the dominant controls on the observed oxygen isotope effect. In these experiments, significant oxygen isotope fractionation was observed to occur after the majority of water O-exchange. Due to the importance of O-exchange, the net oxygen isotope effect for N2O production in soils can only be determined using δ18O-H2O addition experiments with δ18O-H2O close to natural abundance.The results of this study support the continued use of δ15N-N2O analysis to fingerprint N2O produced from the denitrification of . The utilization of 18O/16O ratios of N2O to study N2O production pathways in soil environments is complicated by oxygen exchange with water, which is not usually quantified in field studies. The oxygen isotope fractionation observed in this study was confined to a narrow range, and there was a clear difference in water O-exchange between soil types regardless of temperature, soil moisture, and N2O production rate. A laboratory weathering study using a humidity cell procedure was conducted on two sulfide-bearing tailing samples from a metallurgical site in Ontario (Canada). The test was accompanied by microbiological studies to enumerate the major groups of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and determine their potential role at different stages during the oxidation process. To evaluate the utility of this method, results were compared with those of previous laboratory and field studies on the same materials. The mineralogy of the laboratory samples differs only by the addition of a small amount of hydronium-bearing natrojarosite [(Na,H3O)Fe3(SO4)2(OH)6] to one sample. The progress of sulfide oxidation and the rates of solute release were determined to evaluate the extent of mineral dissolution. These processes were influenced strongly by the capacity of the material to generate acidity, which was enhanced by the presence of hydronium-bearing natrojarosite. Acid-neutralization processes occurring during the laboratory tests were affected by reaction kinetics, consistent with field observations. In particular, the extent of carbonate-mineral dissolution appears to be different in the laboratory than in the field, where more prolonged rock–water interaction allowed more complete chemical equilibration. As a consequence, the capacity of this test procedure to predict weathering reactions in mine tailings is limited by its inability to reproduce the weathering sequence observed in the field. The results of the microbiological study showed that distinct groups of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria operate at different stages of the oxidative process, as was observed in field studies where tailings oxidation occurred under natural conditions, suggesting that microbiological tests performed for laboratory studies are reflective of field conditions. 相似文献

We present a high-resolution dark matter reconstruction of the z = 0.165 Abell 901/902 supercluster from a weak lensing analysis of the Hubble Space Telescope STAGES survey. We detect the four main structures of the supercluster at high significance, resolving substructure within and between the clusters. We find that the distribution of dark matter is well traced by the cluster galaxies, with the brightest cluster galaxies marking out the strongest peaks in the dark matter distribution. We also find a significant extension of the dark matter distribution of Abell 901a in the direction of an infalling X-ray group Abell 901α. We present mass, mass-to-light and mass-to-stellar mass ratio measurements of the structures and substructures that we detect. We find no evidence for variation of the mass-to-light and mass-to-stellar mass ratio between the different clusters. We compare our space-based lensing analysis with an earlier ground-based lensing analysis of the supercluster to demonstrate the importance of space-based imaging for future weak lensing dark matter 'observations'. 相似文献

Analytical studies are carried out to investigate groundwater-head changes in a coastal aquifer system in response to tidal fluctuations. The system consists of an unconfined aquifer, a semi-confined aquifer and a semi-permeable confining unit between them. An exact analytical solution is derived to investigate the influences of both leakage and storage of the semi-permeable layer on the tide-induced groundwater-head fluctuation in the semi-confined aquifer. This solution is a generalization of the solution obtained by Jiao and Tang (Water Resource Research 35 (1999) 747–751) which ignored the storage of the semi-confining unit. The analytical solution indicates that both storage and leakage of the semi-permeable layer play an important role in the groundwater-head fluctuation in the confined aquifer. While leakage is generally more important than storage, the impact of storage on groundwater-head fluctuations changes with leakage. With the increase of leakage the fluctuation of groundwater-head in the confined aquifer will be controlled mainly by leakage. The study also demonstrates that the influence of storativity of the semi-permeable layer on groundwater-head fluctuation is negligible only when the storativity of the semi-permeable layer is comparable to or smaller than that of the confined aquifer. However, for aquifer systems with semi-permeable layer composed of thick, soft sedimentary materials, the storativity of the semi-permeable layer is usually much greater than that of the aquifer and its influence should be considered. 相似文献

A multi-medium, multi element regional geochemical survey has been carried out in an 188,000 km2 area in the Central Barents Region, Finland, Norway and Russia. Four different sample materials (terrestrial moss, O-, B- and C-horizons of podzol) were collected at the same sites throughout the area at a density of 1 site/300 km2. While moss predominantly reflects the atmospheric input of elements, the O-horizon reflects the complex interplay between atmosphere, biosphere and lithosphere. The B-horizon can be used to study the influence of soil-forming processes, while the C-horizon represents the composition of the lithosphere at each sample site and thus the geogenic background. The concentration, variation and correlation between 24 elements (Ag, Al, As, Ba, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Si, Sr, Th, V, Zn) analysed with similar techniques in all 4 materials are compared. Some rare trace elements (Ag, As, Bi, Cd, Pb) appear to be considerably more enriched in the O-horizon of podzols than the main pollutants in the survey area (Ni, Cu, Co from the Russian nickel industry in Monchegorsk and Nikel-Zapoljarnij).
