The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of pH, ion type (salt and metal cations), ionic strength, cation valence, hydrated ionic radius, and solid concentration on the zeta potential of kaolinite and quartz powder in the presence of NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, CuCl2, BaCl2, and AlCl3 solutions. The kaolinite and quartz powder have no isoelectric point (iep) within the entire pH range (3 < pH < 11). In the presence of hydrolysable metal ions, kaolinite and quartz powder have two ieps. As the cationic valence increases, the zeta potential of kaolinite and quartz powder becomes less negative. Monovalent cation, K+, yields more negative zeta potential values than the divalent cation Ba2+. As concentration of solid increases, the zeta potential of the minerals becomes more positive under acidic conditions; however, under alkaline conditions as solid concentration increases the zeta potential becomes more negative. Hydrated ionic radius also affects the zeta potential; the larger the ion, the thicker the layer and the more negative zeta potential for both kaolinite and quartz powder.  相似文献

The residual shear strength of soils is increasingly becoming an active research area, as landslides occur almost daily all over the world. Since Skempton published his landmark paper in 1964, several researchers proposed correlations between soil index properties and residual friction angle of soils for preliminary estimates. However, recent data gathered from Japanese colluvium soils indicate that previously proposed charts correlating soil index properties with residual friction angle yield very poor estimates. In this study, first previously published Japanese data are reevaluated to establish a theoretical foundation for such correlations. Then, it is shown that equivalent smectite content (ESC) largely controls the residual friction angle of soils. In the second stage of the paper using the data of several researchers, it is shown that there is piecewise linear correlation between the equivalent basal spacing (EBS) and the residual friction angle. This study lays down a foundation for theoretical correlation between EBS and residual friction angle of soils.  相似文献

Remotely sensed data may provide easy access for monitoring the spatial separation and obtaining the hydrodynamic characteristics of turbid freshwater plumes created by river flow in the marine environment. Traditional methods are time consuming and require great effort to produce sufficient data. In this project, integrated research has been carried out on a river to demonstrate the utility of remote sensing (RS) technology for studying fundamental theoretical properties of turbulent mixtures. The Filyos River mouth, located on the Black Sea coast of Turkey, is the research area. Flow properties, such as the horizontal dispersion coefficient, have been calculated (using Landsat TM sensor images taken on two different dates). The effects of the plume on the morphology of neighbouring beaches are also examined. This study shows the utility of RS technology for generating quantitative data and better defining the hydraulic behaviour of a river with high turbidity. Ferric oxide‐loaded hybrid sorbents are environmentally benign and exhibit sorption behaviors for chromium removal from waters. In the current study, glycidyl methacrylate‐based polymer (GMD) and nanosized ferric oxide loaded glycidyl methacrylate‐based polymer (GMDFe) were prepared and assayed to examine the effect of ferric oxide loading on chromium sorption from aqueous solution for the first time from the equilibrium and kinetic points of view. The experimental equilibrium data, suitably fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, have shown that ferric oxide loaded hybrid sorbent exhibits higher adsorption capacity than glycidyl methacrylate‐based polymer (GMD). The Langmuir isotherm model was found to be the most suitable one for the Cr(VI) adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacities of GMD and GMDFe sorbents were determined at pH 4 as 109.54 and 157.52 mg/g, respectively. A series of column experiments was carried out to determine the breakthrough curves. The column was regenerated by eluting Cr(VI) using NaOH (10% w/v) solution after adsorption studies.  相似文献

Mass movements are very common problems in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey due to its climate conditions, geological, and geomorphological characteristics. High slope angle, weathering, dense rainfalls, and anthropogenic impacts are generally reported as the most important triggering factors in the region. Following the portal slope excavations in the entrance section of Cankurtaran tunnel, located in the region, where the highly weathered andesitic tuff crops out, a circular toe failure occurred. The main target of the present study is to investigate the causes and occurrence mechanism of this failure and to determine the feasible remedial measures against it using finite element method (FEM) in four stages. These stages are slope stability analyses for pre- and postexcavation cases, and remediation design assessments for slope and tunnel. The results of the FEM-SSR analyses indicated that the insufficient initial support design and weathering of the andesitic tuffs are the main factors that caused the portal failure. After installing a rock retaining wall with jet grout columns and reinforced slope benching applications, the factor of safety increased from 0.83 to 2.80. In addition to slope stability evaluation, the Rock Mass Rating (RMR), Rock Mass Quality (Q) and New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) systems were also utilized as empirical methods to characterize the tunnel ground and to determine the tunnel support design. The performance of the suggested empirical support design, induced stress distributions and deformations were analyzed by means of numerical modelling. Finally, it was concluded that the recommended stabilization technique was essential for the dynamic long-term stability and prevents the effects of failure. Additionally, the FEM method gives useful and reasonably reliable results in evaluating the stability of cut slopes and tunnels excavated both in continuous and discontinuous rock masses.  相似文献

The east–west-trending North Anatolian Fault makes a 17° bend in the western Marmara region from a mildly transpressional segment to a strongly transtensional one. We have studied the changes in the morphology and structure around this fault bend using digital elevation models, field structural geology, and multi-channel seismic reflection profiles. The transpression is reflected in the morphology as the Ganos Mountain, a major zone of uplift, 10 km wide and 35 km long, elongated parallel to the transpressional Ganos Fault segment west of this bend. Flat-lying Eocene turbidites of the Thrace Basin are folded upwards against this Ganos Fault, forming a monocline with the Ganos Mountain at its steep southern limb and the flat-lying hinterland farther north at the flat limb. The sharp northern margin of the Ganos Mountain coincides closely with the monoclinal axis. The strike of the bedding, and the minor and regional fold axes in the Eocene turbidites in Ganos Mountain are parallel to the trace of the Ganos Fault indicating that these structures, as well as the morphology, have formed by shortening perpendicular to the North Anatolian Fault. The monoclinal structure of Ganos Mountain implies that the North Anatolian Fault dips under this mountain at 50°, and this ramp terminates at a decollement at a calculated depth of 8 km. East of this fault bend, the northward dip of the North Anatolian Fault is maintained but it has a normal dip-slip component. This has led to the formation of an asymmetric half-graben, the Tekirdağ Basin in the western Sea of Marmara, containing a thickness of up to 2.5 km of Pliocene to Recent syn-transform sediments. As the Ganos uplift is translated eastwards from the transpressional to the transtensional zone, it undergoes subsidence by southward tilting. However, a morphological relic of the Ganos uplift is maintained as the steep northern submarine slope of the Tekirdağ Basin. The minimum of 3.5 km of fault-normal shortening in the Ganos Mountain, and the minimum of 40 km eastward translation of the Ganos uplift indicate that the present fault geometry has existed for at least the last 2 million years.  相似文献

The Malatya Basin is situated on the southern Taurus-Anatolian Platform. The southern part of the basin contains a sedimentary sequence which can be divided into four main units, each separated by an unconformity. From base to top, these are: (1) Permo-Carboniferous; (2) Upper Cretaceous–Lower Paleocene, (3) Middle-Upper Eocene and (4) Upper Miocene. The Upper Cretaceous–Tertiary sedimentary sequence resting on basement rocks is up to 700 m thick. The Permo-Carboniferous basement consist of dolomites and recrystallized limestones. The Upper Cretaceous–Lower Paleocene transgressive–regressive sequence shows a transition from terrestrial environments, via lagoonal to shallow-marine limestones to deep marine turbiditic sediments, followed upwards by shallow marine cherty limestones. The marine sediments contain planktic and benthic foraminifers indicating an upper Campanian, Maastrichtian and Danian age. The Middle-Upper Eocene is a transgressive–regressive sequence represented by terrestrial and lagoonal clastics, shallow-marine limestones and deep marine turbidites. The planktic and benthic foraminifers in the marine sediments indicate a Middle-Upper Eocene age. The upper Miocene sequence consists of a reddish-brown conglomerate–sandstone–mudstone alternation of alluvial and fluvial facies.During Late Cretaceous–Early Paleocene times, the Gündüzbey Group was deposited in the southern part of a fore-arc basin, simultaneously with volcanics belonging to the Yüksekova Group. During Middle-Late Eocene times, the Yeşilyurt Group was deposited in the northern part of the Maden Basin and the Helete volcanic arc. The Middle-Upper Eocene Malatya Basin was formed due to block faulting at the beginning of the Middle Eocene time. During the Late Paleocene–Early Eocene, and at the end of the Eocene, the study areas became continental due to the southward advance of nappe structures. The rock sequences in the southern part of the Malatya Basin may be divided into four tectonic units, from base to top: the lower allochthon, the upper allochthon, the parautochthon and autochthonous rock units.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to carry out an automatic classification of the lithological units of interest using the integration of remote sensing image, in which various objects are spread on, and terrestrial spectral measurement data. Only endmembers of interest are classified using spectral classification methods such as Spectral Angle Mapper. Following the identification of the types of rock and minerals, integration of remote sensing images and spectral measurement data enable spectral classification. In this study, Short Wave Infrared detector images of Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer satellite and spectroradiometer measurements were used. The study area, Gölova with its geological diversity is located in the Kelkit Valley section of the North Anatolian Fault Zone in Northeast of Turkey. Seventeen rock samples were collected and their coordinates were recorded. The samples were categorized via spectral measurements on their thin sections through petrographic analyses. Marble and Meta lava with different lithological were selected as endmembers. SAM was used as the classification method that enables the analysis of the endmember with the threshold value of 0.009 radian for marble and 0.010 radian for metalava. SAM analysis was compared by visual analysis to principle component analysis, decorrelation stretch, band ratio (R: 4/7, G: 4/1, B (2/3) x (4/3)) and band combination analysis (R: 9, G: 4 and B: 5). This study demonstrates that the SAM method can be successfully used in both the integration of remote sensing image and terrestrial spectral measurement data in lithological classification. Both the endmembers of metalava and marbles were detected in the SAM results at the GPS coordinates noted down whilst collecting the rock samples for accuracy assessment.  相似文献
