Traditionally, approaches to account for the effect of the boundary roughness of a gravel‐bed river have used a grain‐size index of the bed surface as a surrogate for hydraulic resistance. The use of a single grain‐size does not take into account the spatial heterogeneity in the bed surface and how this heterogeneity imparts resistance on the flow, nor the way in which this relationship changes with variables such as flow stage. A new technique to remotely quantify hydraulic resistance is proposed. It is based on measuring the dynamics of a river's water surface and relating this to the actual hydraulic resistance created by a rough sediment boundary. The water surface dynamics are measured using a new acoustic technique, grazing angle sound propagation (GRASP). This proposed method to measure hydraulic resistance is based on a greater degree of physical reasoning, and this is discussed in the letter. By measuring acoustically the temporal dynamics of turbulent water surfaces over a water‐worked gravel bed in a laboratory flume, a dependency is demonstrated between the temporal variation in the reflected acoustic pressure and measured hydraulic resistance. It is shown that the standard deviation in acoustic pressure decreases with increasing hydraulic resistance. This is shown to apply for a range of relative submergences and bed slopes that are typical of gravel‐bed rivers. This remote sensing technique is both rapid and inexpensive, and has the potential to be applied to natural river channels and to other environmental turbulent flows, such as overland flows. A whole new class of low‐cost, remote and non‐intrusive instruments could be developed as a result and used in a wide range of hydraulic and hydrological applications. In Western Siberia(Russia) there are about 100 Artemia lakes with total area over 1 600 km 2.Geographically these lakes are located between 51°–56°N and 61°–82°E.In general these lakes are shallow(depth less than 1.5 m),small or medium size(0.1 to 10 km 2);they are chloride;their total salinity is from 40 to 250 g/L.The harvesting of cysts per year is only in 20–40 lakes.In Russia 550 tons of dry Artemia cysts(14%–18% of the world production) were harvested annually.This includes about 350 tons in the Altai region and 200 tons in other regions.During our regular 20-year study period the cyst harvest was:95 tons in Kurgan;65 tons in Omsk,20 tons in Novosibirsk,20 tons in Tyumen.Ways of increasing cyst harvest in Russia are considered in this article.During the last 30 years the harvest of cysts in Russia has increased from 7–20 to 500–600 tons.A significant influence of dryness of the year was found on productivity in selected lakes,but taken for all the lakes together,the relationship was not significant.The optimal salinity for productivity of cysts in the lakes was determined.Analysis of productivity of the lakes and the harvesting results showed that the stocks of cysts are underutilized by approximately 1.7 times.  相似文献

A kinematic -dynamo model of magnetic field generation in a thin convection shell with nonuniform helicity for large dynamo numbers is considered in the framework of Parker's migratory dynamo. The asymptotic solution obtained of equations governing the magnetic field has the form of an anharmonic travelling dynamo wave. This wave propagates over most latitudes of the solar hemisphere from high latitudes to the equator, and the amplitude of the magnetic field first increases and then decreases with propagation. Over the subpolar latitudes, the dynamo wave reverses; there the dynamo wave propagates polewards and decays with latitude. The half-width of the maximum of the magnetic field localisation and the phase velocity of the dynamo wave are calculated. Butterfly diagrams are plotted and analysed and these show that even a simple model may reveal some properties of the solar magnetic fields.  相似文献

We present isothermal volume compression behavior of two polycrystalline (Mg,Fe)O samples with FeO = 39 and 78 mol% up to ~90 GPa at 300 K using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and neon as a pressure-transmitting medium. For the iron-rich (Mg0.22Fe0.78)O sample, a structural transition from the B1 structure to a rhombohedral structure was observed at 41.6 GPa, with no further indication of changes in structural or compression behavior changes up to 93 GPa. In contrast, a change in the compression behavior of (Mg0.61Fe0.39)O was observed during compression at P ≥ 71 GPa and is indicative of a spin crossover occurring in the Fe2+ component of (Mg0.61Fe0.39)O. The low-spin state exhibited a volume collapse of ~3.5%, which is a larger value than what was observed for a similar composition in a laser-heated NaCl medium. Upon decompression, the volume of the high-spin state was recovered at approximately 65 GPa. We therefore bracket the spin crossover at 65 ≤ P (GPa) ≤ 77 at 300 K (Mg0.61Fe0.39)O. We observed no deviation from the B1 structure in (Mg0.61Fe0.39)O throughout the pressure range investigated.  相似文献

The basal plane reactivities of the sheet silicates apophyllite and phlogopite have been studied by hydrothermal atomic force microscopy (HAFM) in situ in aqueous solutions at temperatures from 20 to 140 °C. At pH 4-5.6 (T = 20-100 °C), the apophyllite basal surface undergoes a swelling process which forms square hillocks on the surface. The reaction comprises three sequential morphological transformations that cause swelling to increase from 0.15 to 2.5 nm. In the first two transformations, interlayer cations are replaced by hydronium ions from the solution; the third transformation involves a depolymerization and partial cross-linking of the protonated silicate sheets. The reaction of phlogopite with acidic aqueous solutions (pH 1.5-2) at high temperature (T = 100-140 °C) causes the nucleation of numerous monolayer etch pits on the pristine surface. Where the 2D pits recur at the same lateral position, they can accumulate to a total pit depth of up to 50 nm. The formation of an altered layer has also been detected at these conditions. The alteration affects the uppermost 4-5 layers. The layers are expanded, corrugated, highly unstable, and readily peel off the surface. Etch pit formation has been detected even underneath the altered layer. On the basis of HAFM data, dissolution rates and activation energies were calculated. The presented data show that the basal surface of phlogopite plays an important role in the dissolution process at least at elevated temperatures and that the absolute amount of released material has comparable contributions from both basal surfaces and edge surfaces.  相似文献

We study the twist properties of photospheric magnetic fields in solar active regions using magnetographic data on 422 active regions obtained at the Huairou Solar Observing Station in 1988–1997. We calculate the mean twist (force-free field αf) of the active regions and compare it with the mean current-helicity density of these same active regions, h c =B ·(?×B). The latitude and longitude distributions and time dependence of these quantities is analyzed. These parameters represent two different tracers of the α effect in dynamo theory, so we might expect them to possess similar properties. However, apart from differences in their definitions, they also display differences associated with the technique used to recalculate the magnetographic data and with their different physical meanings. The distributions of the mean αf and h c both show hemispherical asymmetry—negative (positive) values in the northern (southern) hemisphere—although this tendency is stronger for h c. One reason for these differences may be the averaging procedure, when twists of opposite sign in regions with weak fields make a small contribution to the mean current-helicity density. Such transequatorial regularity is in agreement with the expectations of dynamo theory. In some active regions, the average αf and h c do not obey this transequatorial rule. As a whole, the mean twist of the magnetic fields αf of active regions does not vary significantly with the solar cycle. Active regions that do not follow the general behavior for αf do not show any appreciable tendency to cluster at certain longitudes, in contrast to results for h c noted in previous studies. We analyze similarities and differences in the distributions of these two quantities. We conclude that using only one of these tracers, such as αf, to search for signatures of the α effect can have disadvantages, which should be taken into account in future studies.  相似文献

The relation of the solar cycle period and its amplitude is a complex problem as there is no direct correlation between these two quantities. Nevertheless, the period of the cycle is of important influence to the Earth's climate, which has been noted by many authors. The present authors make an attempt to analyse the solar indices data taking into account recent developments of the asymptotic theory of the solar dynamo. The use of the WKB method enables us to estimate the amplitude and the period of the cycle versus dynamo wave parameters in the framework of the nonlinear development of the one-dimensional Parker migratory dynamo. These estimates link the period T and the amplitude a with dynamo number D and thickness of the generation layer of the solar convective zone h. As previous authors, we have not revealed any considerable correlation between the above quantities calculated in the usual way. However, we have found some similar dependences with good confidence using running cycle periods. We have noticed statistically significant dependences between the Wolf numbers and the running period of the magnetic cycle, as well as between maximum sunspot number and duration of the phase of growth of each sunspot cycle. The latter one supports asymptotic estimates of the nonlinear dynamo wave suggested earlier. These dependences may be useful for understanding the mechanism of the solar dynamo wave and prediction of the average maximum amplitude of solar cycles. Besides that, we have noted that the maximum amplitude of the cycle and the temporal derivative of the monthly Wolf numbers at the very beginning of the phase of growth of the cycle have high correlation coefficient of order 0.95. The link between Wolf number data and their derivative taken with a time shift enabled us to predict the dynamics of the sunspot activity. For the current cycle 23 this yields Wolf numbers of order 107±7.  相似文献

An attempt to extract maximum information on signatures of the alpha-effect from current helicity and twist density calculations in the solar photosphere is carried out. A possible interpretation of the results for developing the dynamo theory is discussed. The analysis shows that the surface magnetic current helicity is mainly negative/positive in the northern/southern hemispheres of the Sun. This indicates the actual alpha-effect at the photospheric level to be positive/negative, respectively. However, at the bottom of the convection zone, we may assume this effect to change the sign to negative/positive. We reveal some quantities related to the alpha-effect and discuss its spatial and temporal distribution. It is also found that there are a small number of active regions where the sign of the alpha-effect is opposite to that in most active regions. Such exceptional active regions seem to localize at certain active longitudes. We compare the determined regularities with theoretical predictions of the alpha-effect distribution in the solar convection zone.  相似文献

The metastable superheated solutions are liquids in transitory thermodynamic equilibrium inside the stability domain of their vapor (whatever the temperature is). Some natural contexts should allow the superheating of natural aqueous solutions, like the soil capillarity (low T superheating), certain continental and submarine geysers (high T superheating), or even the water state in very arid environments like the Mars subsurface (low T) or the deep crustal rocks (high T). The present paper reports experimental measurements on the superheating range of aqueous solutions contained in quartz as fluid inclusions (Synthetic Fluid Inclusion Technique, SFIT) and brought to superheating state by isochoric cooling. About 40 samples were synthetized at 0.75 GPa and 530-700 °C with internally-heated autoclaves. Nine hundred and sixty-seven inclusions were studied by micro-thermometry, including measuring the temperatures of homogenization (Th: L + V → L) and vapor bubbles nucleation (Tn: L → L + V). The Th-Tn difference corresponds to the intensity of superheating that the trapped liquid can undergo and can be translated into liquid pressure (existing just before nucleation occurs at Tn) by an equation of state. Pure water (840-935 kg m−3), dilute NaOH solutions (0.1 and 0.5 mol kg−1), NaCl, CaCl2 and CsCl solutions (1 and 5 mol kg−1) demonstrated a surprising ability to undergo tensile stress. The highest tension ever recorded to the best of our knowledge (−146 MPa, 100 °C) is attained in a 5 m CaCl2 inclusion trapped in quartz matrix, while CsCl solutions qualitatively show still better superheating efficiency. These observations are discussed with regards to the quality of the inner surface of inclusion surfaces (high P-T synthesis conditions) and to the intrinsic cohesion of liquids (thermodynamic and kinetic spinodal). This study demonstrates that natural solutions can reach high levels of superheating, that are accompanied by strong changes of their physico-chemical properties.  相似文献
