Much research has been done on water‐rich mass flows, but the distinction between hyperconcentrated flows and debris flows, and whether the two are indeed different processes, continue to be debated. Here, we contribute to the ongoing discussion of these phenomena by describing and interpreting the deposit of a large landslide‐induced mass flow in the eastern Swiss Alps. About 9400 years ago, 10‐12 km3 of limestone detached from the wall of the Vorderrhein River valley and rapidly fragmented while sliding towards the valley bottom. The rock mass struck the valley floor with enormous force and liquefied at least 1 km3 of valley‐fill sediments. A slurry of liquefied sediment – the ‘Bonaduz gravel’ – traveled tens of kilometres down the Vorderrhein valley from the impact site, carrying huge fragments of rockslide debris that became stranded on the valley floor, forming hills termed ‘tomas’. Part of the flow was deflected by a cross‐valley barrier and traveled 14 km up a tributary of the Vorderrhein valley. The Bonaduz gravel is >65 m thick and fines upward from massive sandy cobble gravel at its base to silty sand at its top. Sedimentologic and geomorphic evidence indicates that Bonaduz gravel was transported as a hyperconcentated flow, likely above a basal carpet of coarse diamictic sediment that behaved as a debris flow. The large amount of water involved in the flow indicates that at least part of the Flims rockslide entered a lake. The Bonaduz deposit shares many properties with sediments left by hyperconcentrated flows generated in flumes, including normal grading and elutriation pipes produced by the rapid escape of fluids when the flow comes to rest. These properties are characteristic of non‐Newtonian laminar flows with high sediment concentrations. Our study reinforces laboratory and theoretical studies showing that debris flows and hyperconcentrated flows are different processes. © 2017 The Authors. 针对含弱渗透性覆盖层的饱和砂土地基进行一组离心机振动台试验,并采用OpenSees对试验模型进行数值模拟。通过模型试验与数值模拟结果对比讨论OpenSees对于饱和砂土地基地震液化模拟的精度;采用水平方向的Arias强度表示传入某一位置的地震动强度,并以液化时水平方向Arias强度作为该土层的抗液化强度;采用OpenSees计算不同地震动输入时饱和砂土的反应,以此检验Arias强度作为抗液化强度的准确性。结果表明,引起饱和砂土液化所需要的地震动强度随深度增加而增加;当传入的地震强度达到砂土发生液化所需要的地震强度时,该层砂土将会发生液化。  相似文献

During the recent earthquakes in Japan and the U.S.A. a number of records from liquefied‐soil sites have been obtained. The ground motion parameters from these sites were studied and several methods for detection of liquefaction from seismic records were developed. The methods, however, focus mainly on the horizontal ground motion and may interpret as liquefaction‐induced some records from soft‐soil deposits or records with dominant surface waves, at which sites the phenomenon was not observed. Besides, not all of the available records from liquefied sites were processed. In this paper, after examination of the ability of different types of ground motion parameters to indicate alone soil liquefaction we propose a new liquefaction detection method that simultaneously analyses instantaneous frequency content of the horizontal and the vertical ground acceleration. We also compare performance of the proposed method with that of the other liquefaction detection methods. The computations are carried out using a common data set including records from liquefied and non‐liquefied sites. Results show that the frequency‐related parameters and the proposed method detect more efficiently the occurrence of liquefaction from the seismic records. A standing wave in front of a seawall may reach a height more than twice of its incident component. When excess pore pressure occurs, it may even induce seabed instability, hence endangering the structure. This issue was studied previously using only linear wave theory. In this paper, standing‐wave theory to a second‐order approximation is applied, in order to demonstrate the differences between these two solutions. The spatial and temporal variations in the instantaneous pore pressure are first calculated, in addition to their vertical distributions. The effects of wave height, water depth and the degree of soil saturation on pore pressure distributions are then discussed, followed by the net pore pressure averaged over one wave cycle. The results suggest the existence of a residual pore pressure in the seabed and its net pore pressure can be used to estimate the wave‐induced liquefaction potential in a soil column. It also indicates that, in deep water, the second‐order solution predicts that a negative pore pressure at an antinode which may be greater than a positive pressure. Overall, the second‐order solution is found to agree better with the experimental results of the pore pressures available, compared to the linear solution. The implementation of the non-linear elastic multi-surface plastic kinematic constitutive soil model ALTERNAT into a general uncoupled finite element program called ALTICA is described. The principal features of the model are discussed and its implementation into an initial stress type excess plastic stress redistribution algorithm. To show the abilities of the model and validate the algorithm, several examples are presented including the calibration of the model to a real sand with measured monotonic and cyclic properties. In the monotonic examples, the ability of ALTICA to accurately reproduce the predicted collapse load of geotechnical structures is demonstrated using the results of finite element simulations of two typical boundary value problems (with known analytical or numerical solutions). In the cyclic examples, results of cyclic liquefaction simulation using both a non-inertial ‘static’ and inertial ‘dynamic’ algorithm are presented. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

对垂向动载荷作用下吸力式桶形基础(简称桶基)响应进行离心机实验模拟.结果表明,在垂向动载荷作用下,当载荷幅值超过一定值时,桶基周围砂土软化甚至液化,发生明显的沉降.桶基周围土体的沉降随着载荷幅值的增加而增加.由于液化区的滤波和对动载的衰减作用,发生沉降的范围有限,离桶壁约一倍桶高距离.超孔隙水压从桶基边沿水平向逐渐衰减,从土面开始往下逐渐衰减到零.桶基周围砂土完全液化的厚度随载荷幅值的增加而增加,最大值约为桶高的40%.  相似文献

黄土具有极强的水敏性和动力易损性,黄土地区多次强震都引起过液化、滑坡等地质灾害,造成了严重的人员伤亡和财产损失,因此振动作用下高含水率黄土的液化问题不容忽视。在大量已有研究的基础上,以宁夏党家岔滑坡为例,研究振动作用下高含水率黄土的液化问题。现场调查发现高含水率滑带土并未达到完全饱和状态(饱和度达95%左右),在新鲜的芯样断面发现有明显的"流态化"液化破坏特征。借助室内试验和数值模拟技术,对党家岔滑坡非饱和黄土层的液化性能及液化发生机理进行分析。结果表明:(1)非饱和黄土层液化发生机理可概括为:地震作用下饱和黄土层孔隙水压力激增,高含水率非饱和黄土层孔压增长响应滞后,随着孔隙水压朝上部消散,地下水向上渗流,当平均有效应力接近0时,高含水率非饱和黄土层发生液化;(2)振动过程中不同饱和度黄土孔隙水压力增长响应具有滞后性,借鉴饱和黄土液化时孔压比的判别标准和Seed简化判别法,初步证实党家岔滑坡高含水率非饱和黄土层可发生振动液化,斜坡前缘和中部土体发生液化的初始饱和度范围分别为68.3%~100%和73.8%~100%,斜坡后缘土体不发生液化。  相似文献
