Magnesium and strontium isotope signatures were determined during different seasons for the main rivers of the Moselle basin, northeastern France. This small basin is remarkable for its well-constrained and varied lithology on a small distance scale, and this is reflected in river water Sr isotope compositions. Upstream, where the Moselle River drains silicate rocks of the Vosges mountains, waters are characterized by relatively high 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7128-0.7174). In contrast, downstream of the city of Epinal where the Moselle River flows through carbonates and evaporites of the Lorraine plateau, 87Sr/86Sr ratios are lower, down to 0.70824.Magnesium in river waters draining silicates is systematically depleted in heavy isotopes (δ26Mg values range from −1.2 to −0.7‰) relative to the value presently estimated for the continental crust and a local diorite (−0.5‰). In comparison, δ26Mg values measured in soil samples are higher (∼0.0‰). This suggests that Mg isotope fractionation occurs during mineral leaching and/or formation of secondary clay minerals. On the Lorraine plateau, tributaries draining marls, carbonates and evaporites are characterized by low Ca/Mg (1.5-3.2) and low Ca/Sr (80-400) when compared to local carbonate rocks (Ca/Mg = 29-59; Ca/Sr = 370-2200), similar to other rivers draining carbonates. The most likely cause of the Mg and Sr excesses in these rivers is early thermodynamic saturation of groundwater with calcite relative to magnesite and strontianite as groundwater chemistry progressively evolves in the aquifer. δ26Mg of the dissolved phases of tributaries draining mainly carbonates and evaporites are relatively low and constant throughout the year (from −1.4‰ to −1.6‰ and from −1.2‰ to −1.4‰, respectively), within the range defined for the underlying rocks. Downstream of Epinal, the compositions of the Moselle River samples in a δ26Mg vs. 87Sr/86Sr diagram can be explained by mixing curves between silicate, carbonate and evaporite waters, with a significant contribution from the Vosgian silicate lithologies (>70%). Temporal co-variation between δ26Mg and 87Sr/86Sr for the Moselle River throughout year is also observed, and is consistent with a higher contribution from the Vosges mountains in winter, in terms of runoff and dissolved element flux. Overall, this study shows that Mg isotopes measured in waters, rocks and soils, coupled with other tracers such as Sr isotopes, could be used to better constrain riverine Mg sources, particularly if analytical uncertainties in Mg isotope measurements can be improved in order to perform more precise quantifications.  相似文献

Supergene nickel deposits of New Caledonia that have been formed in the Neogene by weathering of obducted ultramafic rocks are controlled by fracture development. The relationship of tropical weathering and tectonic structures, faults and tension gashes, have been investigated in order to determine whether fractures play a passive role only, as previously thought; or alternatively, if brittle tectonics was acting together with alteration. Observation of time‐relationship, textures, and mineralogy of various fracture fills and fault gouges shows that active faulting has played a prominent role not only in facilitating drainage and providing room for synkinematic crystallization of supergene nickel silicate, but also in mobilizing already formed sparse nickel ore, producing the very high grade ore nicknamed “green gold”.  相似文献

A portable narrowband spectroradiometer was used to detect sclerotinia stem rot infection, caused by the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in soybeans. Increasing levels of fungal inoculum were used to cause a gradient of disease infection in the field. Canopy reflectance measured in narrowband R/sub 675/-R/sub 685/ and broadband R/sub 635/-R/sub 685/ could estimate 86% of the variation in soybean plants damage measured by a count of early dead plants. Plant damage was also associated with the chlorophyll absorption in reflectance and the normalized pigment chlorophyll vegetation indexes, showing a loss of chlorophyll pigment compared to healthy plants. A new field approach is suggested for the investigation of plant damage with narrowband spectroradiometry.  相似文献

This contribution aims to report the reflections we had with the scientific community during two international workshops on reference materials for stable isotopes in Davos (2002) and Nice (2003). After evaluating the isotopic homogeneity of some existing reference materials, based on either certificates, literature data or specific inter-laboratory rounds, we confirm these as primary reference materials or propose new ones relative to which stable isotope compositions should be reported. We propose DSM-3 for Mg, NIST SRM 915a for Ca, L-SVEC for Li and NBS28 for Si. Cadmium does not yet have a well identified delta zero material, although three commercial mono-elemental Cd solutions have yielded the same isotopic composition relative to one another. In order to scale the linearity of any mass spectrometer, some secondary reference materials are also proposed: Cambridge-1 solution for Mg, the "Münster-Cd" and JEPPIM Cd solutions for Cd and the "Big Batch" silicate for Si. The team from Nancy propose to prepare a mixed spike solution for Li isotopes. Well-characterised natural samples such as ocean or continental waters, diatoms, sponges, rocks and minerals are needed to validate the entire analytical procedure, particularly to take into account the effect of sample mineralisation and of chemical manipulations for elemental separation prior to analysis.  相似文献

Two higher plant species (rye grass and clover) were cultivated under laboratory conditions on two substrates (solution, phlogopite) in order to constrain the corresponding Mg isotope fractionations during plant growth and Mg uptake. We show that bulk plants are systematically enriched in heavy isotopes relative to their nutrient source. The Δ26Mgplant-source range from 0.72‰ to 0.26‰ for rye grass and from 1.05‰ to 0.41‰ for clover. Plants grown on phlogopite display Mg isotope signatures (relative to the Mg source) ∼0.3‰ lower than hydroponic plants. For a given substrate, rye grass display lower δ26Mg (by ∼0.3‰) relative to clover. Magnesium desorbed from rye grass roots display a δ26Mg greater than the nutrient solution. Adsorption experiments on dead and living rye grass roots also indicate a significant enrichment in heavy isotopes of the Mg adsorbed on the root surface. Our results indicate that the key processes responsible for heavy isotope enrichment in plants are located at the root level. Both species also exhibit an enrichment in light isotopes from roots to shoots (Δ26Mgleaf-root = −0.65‰ and −0.34‰ for rye grass and clover grown on phlogopite respectively, and Δ26Mgleaf-root of −0.06‰ and −0.22‰ for the same species grown hydroponically). This heavy isotope depletion in leaves can be explained by biological processes that affect leaves and roots differently: (1) organo-Mg complex (including chlorophyll) formation, and (2) Mg transport within plant. For both species, a positive correlation between δ26Mg and K/Mg was observed among the various organs. This correlation is consistent with the link between K and Mg internal cycles, as well as with formation of organo-magnesium compounds associated with enrichment in heavy isotopes. Considering our results together with the published range for δ26Mg of natural plants and rivers, we estimate that a significant change in continental vegetation would induce a change of the mean river δ26Mg that is comparable to analytical uncertainties.  相似文献

Tri-octahedral Li-Mg smectites (hectorites) were synthesized at temperatures ranging from 25 to 250 °C, in the presence of solutions highly enriched in lithium. After removing all the exchangeable lithium from the synthesized clays, Li isotope fractionation (Δ7Liclay-solution) was determined. This fractionation was linked to Li incorporation into the structural octahedral site, substituting for Mg2+. As predicted, experimental Δ7Liclay-solution inversely correlates with temperature, and ranges from −1.6‰ ± 1.3‰ at 250 °C to −10.0‰ ± 1.3‰ at 90 °C, and then stays relatively constant down to 25 °C. The relatively constant isotope fractionation factor below 90 °C may be due to high concentrations of edge octahedra in low crystallinity smectites. The isotopic fractionation factor (α), for a given temperature, does not depend on the solution matrix, nor on the amount of structural Li incorporated into the clay. Empirical linear laws for α as a function of 1/T (K) were inferred. Smectite Li contents and smectite-solution distribution coefficients (DLi/Mg) increase with temperature, as expected for a substitution process. The fractions of dissolved Li incorporated into the smectite octahedral sites are small and do not depend on the duration of the experiment. In a seawater-like matrix solution, less Li is incorporated into the smectites, probably as a result of competition with dissolved Mg2+ ions for incorporation into the octahedral sites. The high Li contents observed in marine smectites are therefore best explained either by a significant contribution from basalts, by adsorption processes, or by the influence of seawater chemical composition on distribution coefficients. We also calculate, using present-day estimates of hydrothermal water and river fluxes, that a steady-state ocean would require a relatively large global clay-water Li isotope fractionation (−12‰ to −21‰). This study demonstrates the ability of laboratory experiments to quantify the impact of secondary phases on the Li geochemical cycle and associated isotope fractionations.  相似文献

A sample of 41 radio-galaxies with 13.0m corr15.5 has been analyzed to test the angular redshift anisotropy discovered on Sc I galaxies by Rubin, Rubin and Ford. The sample does not present their anisotropy but contains an even more curious distribution of radial velocities which suggests that the Rubin-Ford effect results from an anomalous redshift of light when it travels through clusters of galaxies.  相似文献

The CRPG (Nancy, France) has prepared secondary reference materials for Li isotope measurements by mixing 7Li or 6Li spikes and either L-SVEC or IRMM-016 certified reference materials to produce solutions having a known Li concentration and isotopic composition. The Li7-N and Li6-N solution samples (1.5 mol l−1 HNO3) have nominal δ7Li isotopic compositions of 30.1‰ and -9.7‰ respectively relative to L-SVEC and concentrations of 100 mg l−1. Repeated measurement of these samples using the QUAD-ICP-MS at the CRPG yielded δ7Li of 30.4 ± 1.1‰ (n = 13) and -8.9 ± 0.9‰ (n = 9) at the 2s level of confidence. An additional LiCl-N solution was measured and yielded a delta value of 9.5 ± 0.6‰ (n = 3). Identical results were obtained at the BRGM (Orléans, France) from determinations performed with a Neptune MC-ICP-MS (30.2 ± 0.3‰, n = 89 for the Li7-N, -8.0 ± 0.3‰, n = 38 for the Li6-N and 10.1 ± 0.2‰, n = 46 for LiCl-N at the 2s level of confidence). The deviation of measured composition relative to the nominal value for the Li6-N solution might be explained by either contamination during preparation or an error during sample weighing. These secondary reference materials, previously passed through ion exchange resin or directly analysed, may be used for checking the accuracy of Li isotopic measurements over a range of almost 40‰ and will be available to the scientific community upon request to J. Carignan or N. Vigier, CRPG.  相似文献

In order to use lithium isotopes as tracers of silicate weathering, it is of primary importance to determine the processes responsible for Li isotope fractionation and to constrain the isotope fractionation factors caused by each process as a function of environmental parameters (e.g. temperature, pH). The aim of this study is to assess Li isotope fractionation during the dissolution of basalt and particularly during leaching of Li into solution by diffusion or ion exchange. To this end, we performed dissolution experiments on a Li-enriched synthetic basaltic glass at low ratios of mineral surface area/volume of solution (S/V), over short timescales, at various temperatures (50 and 90 °C) and pH (3, 7, and 10). Analyses of the Li isotope composition of the resulting solutions show that the leachates are enriched in 6Li (δ7Li = +4.9 to +10.5‰) compared to the fresh basaltic glass (δ7Li = +10.3 ± 0.4‰). The δ7Li value of the leachate is lower during the early stages of the leaching process, increasing to values close to the fresh basaltic glass as leaching progresses. These low δ7Li values can be explained in terms of diffusion-driven isotope fractionation. In order to quantify the fractionation caused by diffusion, we have developed a model that couples Li diffusion with dissolution of the glassy silicate network. This model calculates the ratio of the diffusion coefficients of both isotopes (a = D7/D6), as well as its dependence on temperature, pH, and S/V. a is mainly dependent on temperature, which can be explained by a small difference in activation energy (0.10 ± 0.02 kJ/mol) between 6Li+ and 7Li+. This temperature dependence reveals that Li isotope fractionation during diffusion is low at low temperatures (T < 20 °C), but can be significant at high temperatures. However, concerning hydrothermal fluids (T > 120 °C), the dissolution rate of basaltic glass is also high and masks the effects of diffusion. These results indicate that the high δ7Li values of river waters, in particular in basaltic catchments, and the fractionated values of hydrothermal fluids are mainly controlled by precipitation of secondary phases.  相似文献
