Litter pollution on the Jordanian shores of the Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Litter was assessed on three beaches along the Jordanian coast of the Gulf of Aqaba, south of the town Aqaba, monthly during 1994 and 1995, in order to determine its nature, extent and possible sources. The overall mean was about 5 and 3 items/m(2) in 1994 and 1995, respectively. Approximately a total of 14,000 m(2) were examined and a total of 101,000 items were noted, 67,000 during 1994 and 34,000 in 1995. More than 50% of the litter was plastic and the remainder wood, glass, cardboard, Styrofoam, metal and other materials. Most litter appears to be from local land-based or near shore sources, although there are some regional influences as well. The main local sources are the passenger port, the cargo port and the beach goers. The findings are compared with other regions of the world. The amount of litter is related to distance of the beach from the main sources, and shape, physiography and orientation of the beach. Spatial and seasonal variations are examined and discussed, and actions and measures to combat the problem on local and regional levels are suggested.  相似文献

As an example of the technique of fingerprint detection of greenhouse climate change, a multivariate signal or fingerprint of the enhanced greenhouse effect is defined using the zonal mean atmospheric temperature change as a function of height and latitude between equilibrium climate model simulations with control and doubled CO2 concentrations. This signal is compared with observed atmospheric temperature variations over the period 1963 to 1988 from radiosonde-based global analyses. There is a significant increase of this greenhouse signal in the observational data over this period.These results must be treated with caution. Upper air data are available for a short period only, possibly too short to be able to resolve any real greenhouse climate change. The greenhouse fingerprint used in this study may not be unique to the enhanced greenhouse effect and may be due to other forcing mechanisms. However, it is shown that the patterns of atmospheric temperature change associated with uniform global increases of sea surface temperature, with El NinoSouthern Oscillation events and with decreases of stratospheric ozone concentrations individually are different from the greenhouse fingerprint used here.  相似文献

In order to assess the magnitude of phosphate pollution in the Jordanian sector of the Gulf of Aqaba, the distribution of total phosphorus, fluoride, calcium and calcium carbonate and their association with each other were determined in sediments collected from seven stations north and south of Aqaba Port. Abnormally high values were found near the phosphate loading berth which decrease with increasing distance from the berth. The results indicate that phosphate pollution is mainly localized in the vicinity of the loading berth although its influence may be detected in other areas along the coast. The level of pollution had increased by at least an order of magnitude since 1978.  相似文献

The concentrations of six heavy metals were studied in five living coral species and their fossil counterparts collected along the Jordanian Coast of the Gulf of Aqaba. The study aimed at investigating the validity of using coral skeletons as bioindicators for environmental pollution by heavy metals in the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea. The skeletal samples of the collected corals were acid digested and analyzed for Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn content using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results obtained have shown that higher concentrations of heavy metals were found in coral skeletons from areas hosting intense developments and human activities. The massive Porites sp. coral tended to accumulate the highest metal concentrations among the other species (except for Mn). This was due to interspecific differences or selectivity of heavy metals between different coral species. It was noteworthy that fossil coral species recorded higher average metal concentrations than their living counterparts; this was attributed to surface contamination due to prolonged burial of the fossil corals in sediment over the years. The study concluded that corals (specially the massive Porites species) are vulnerable to the accumulation of high concentrations of heavy metals in their skeletons and therefore can serve as proxies to monitor environmental pollution.  相似文献

In order to assess pollutants and impact of environmental changes in the coastal region of the Jordanian Gulf of Aqaba, concentrations of six metals were traced through variations in 5 years growth bands sections of recent Porties coral skeleton. X-radiography showed annual growth band patterns extending back to the year 1925. Baseline metal concentrations in Porites corals were established using 35 years-long metal record from late Holocene coral (deposited in pristine environment) and coral from reef that is least exposed to pollution in the marine reserve in the Gulf of Aqaba. The skeleton samples of the collected corals were acid digested and analyzed for their Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn content using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (FAAS). All metal profiles (except Fe and Zn) recorded the same metal signature from recent coral (1925–2005) in which low steady baseline levels were displayed in growth bands older than 1965, similar to those obtained from fossil and unpolluted corals. Most metals showed dramatic increase (ranging from 17% to 300%) in growth band sections younger than 1965 suggesting an extensive contamination of the coastal area since the mid sixties. This date represents the beginning of a period that witnessed increasing coastal activities, constructions and urbanization. This has produced a significant reduction in coral skeletal extension rates. Results from this study strongly suggest that Porites corals have a high tendency to accumulate heavy metals in their skeletons and therefore can serve as proxy tools to monitor and record environmental pollution (bioindicators) in the Gulf of Aqaba.  相似文献

In nearshore waters of the Jordanian sector of the Gulf of Aqaba, the distributions of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, as well as Ca and Mg, were determined in the mucus-rich burrow lining made by the locally abundant Crustacea Callichirus laurae (Thalassinidea: Callianassideae), and compared with concentrations obtained in surface sediments surrounding the burrows. The highest concentrations of trace elements were observed in a sewage affected area. At uncontaminated stations, a marked increase from surface sand values was observed in the burrow lining. The correlations between the concentration of trace elements in this biogenic micro-environment and both the concentration of organic carbon and the mean granulometric diameter were highly significant.This study shows that the C. laurae burrow acts as a chemical reservoir that may reach several meters deep into the sediment. This special reservoir is created as an indirect consequence of the building of a mucus-rich, metal-reacting lining. It is demonstrated that the absolute quantity of trace elements incorporated in the lining is much higher (c. 85 to 250 times more, depending on the element) than in the dense and healthy Halophila stipulacea seagrass bed covering the surface.The environmental significance of large lined burrows for the distribution of trace elements is discussed.  相似文献
