Granite sheets emplaced into the migmatite zone of the easterncontact aureole of the Bushveld Complex resulted from fluid-enhanced,incongruent biotite melting of the underlying Silverton Formationshales during prograde metamorphism. Ba concentrations are extremein both the sheets (>1000 ppm) and the hornfels (>800ppm) into which they have been emplaced. We conclude that aBa-rich, hydrothermal fluid induced melting in the aureole,and that fluid transport of Ba2+, and to a lesser extent, Sr2+and Eu2+, persisted in the melt zones under subsolidus conditions.Sr-isotope systematics from high-Ba localities define an errorchronof 2161 ± 106 Ma with an initial (87Sr/86Sr) ratio of0·705 ± 0·001. Metasedimentary rocks unaffectedby fluid infiltration were homogenized at the same time butwith an increased initial ratio, suggesting that whereas isotopehomogenization was achieved between outcrops permeated by fluids,there is no evidence of regional homogenization. Oxygen-isotopecompositions of psammitic metasediments in the aureole are uncorrelatedwith distance from the contact, suggesting the infiltratingfluid equilibrated isotopically with the metasediments. Abstract— Using an H‐plot analysis, we identify 234 currently known near‐Earth objects that are accessible for rendezvous with a “best case” delta‐V of less than 7 km/s. We provide a preliminary compositional interpretation and assessment of these potential targets by summarizing the taxonomic properties for 44 objects. Results for one‐half (22) of this sample are based on new spectroscopic measurements presented here. Our approach provides an easy‐to‐update method for giving guidelines to both observers and mission analysts for focusing on objects for which actual mission opportunities are most likely to be found. Observing prospects are presented for categorizing the taxonomic properties of the most accessible targets that are not yet measured.  相似文献

Quaternary lavas and pyroclastic rocks of Mount Mazama, CraterLake caldera, and the surrounding area have variable Sr, Nd,and Pb isotopic compositions. High-alumina olivine tholeiites(HAOT) have 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.70346–0.70364; basalticandesite, 0–70349–0.70372; shoshonitic basalticandesite, 0.70374–0.70388; and andesite, 0.70324–0.70383.Dacites of Mount Mazama have 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.70348–0.70373.Most rhyodacites converge on 0.7037. However, rhyodacite ofthe caldera-forming, climactic eruption has 87Sr/86Sr=0.70354because of an admixed low-87Sr/86Sr component. Andesitic tomafic-cumulate scoriae of the climactic eruption, and enclavesin preclimactic rhyodacites, cluster in two groups but shownearly the entire 87Sr/86Sr range of the data set, confirmingpreviously suggested introduction of diverse parental magmasinto the growing climactic chamber. Pb and Nd isotope ratiosdisplay less variation (206Pb/204Pb= 18.838–18.967, 207Pb/204Pb=15.556–15.616,208Pb/204Pb=38.405–38.619; Nd= +3.9 to +6.1) and generallycovary with 87Sr/86 Sr ratios. Radiogenic isotope data fromCrater Lake plot with published data for other Cascade volcanoeson isotope ratio correlation diagrams. The isotopic data for the Crater Lake area require sources ofprimitive magmas to consist of depleted mantle and a subductioncomponent, introduced in variable quantity to the depleted mantlewedge. Variable degrees of melting of this heterogeneous mantle,possibly at different depths, produced the diversity of isotopiccompositions and large-ion lithophile element (LILE) abundancesin primitive magmas. Trace element ratios do not indicate presenceof an ocean island basalt (OIB) source component that has beenreported in lavas of some other Cascade volcanoes. Crustal contamination may have affected isotope ratios and LILEconcentrations in evolved HAOT, where initial LILE concentrationswere low. Contamination is more difficult to detect in the calcalkalinelavas because of their higher LILE concentrations and the smallisotopic contrast with likely contaminants, such as mid- tolower-crustal rocks thought to be equivalents of igneous rocksof the Klamath Mountains and associated lower crust. Crustalassimilation appears to be required for calcalkaline rocks onlyby 18O values, which vary from lows of +5.6 to + 6.0% in HAOTand primitive basaltic andesites to a high of +7.0% in dacite,a range that is too high to be explained by plagioclase-dominatedclosed-system fractional crystallization. Elevated 18O valuesof differentiated lavas may be attributed to interaction withrelatively 18O-rich, 87Sr-poor crustal rocks. Variably fused granitoid blocks ejected in the climactic eruption,and rarely in late Pleistocene eruptive units, have 18Opl of–3.4 to +6.5% and 18Oqz of –2.2 to +8.0% but haveSr, Nd, and Pb isotope ratios similar to volcanic rocks (e.g.87Sr/86Sr0.7037). Rb and Sr data for glass separates from granodioritessuggest that the source pluton is Miocene. Glass from granodioritehas 87Sr/86Sr ratios as high as 0.70617. Oxygen isotope fractionationbetween quartz, plagioclase, and glass indicates requilibrationof O isotopes at magmatic temperatures, after 18O/16O had beenlowered by exchange with meteoric hydrothermal fluids. Unmeltedgranodiorite xenoliths from pre-climactic eruptive units have18O values that are consistent with onset of hydrothermal exchangeearly during growth of the climactic magma chamber. Assimilationof such upper-crustal granodiorite apparently lowered 18O valuesof rhyodacites without significantly affecting their magmaticcompositions in other ways.  相似文献

After the social policy reforms of 1991 important changes in internal migration in New Zealand occurred. These resulted in changing housing costs and falling incomes which led to the movement of low income households, particularly beneficiaries and state house tenants, from urban to rural areas and small towns. A survey of 404 people who moved to the Southern Wairarapa towns of Carterton, Martinborough and Featherston from New Zealand urban areas since 1985 shows that a proportional increase in beneficiary movement occurred after 1991. Housing costs, relative to income, are important factors in the decision to move for a range of migrants. This pattern of migration has important regional development ramifications.  相似文献

This paper describes recent proglacial lacustrine sediments exposed by the drainage of a small (probably never more than 0·03 km2) ice-dammed lake basin at Leirbreen, central Jotunheimen, Norway. The dominant facies include ripple-laminated, massive and horizontally-stratified sands, massive and horizontally-laminated silts, and irregularly-laminated fine sands and silts. The major control on lake circulation and the nature and distribution of these facies was an underflow driven by a subglacial meltwater stream which formed the major lake input. Although much of the sedimentary sequence indicates a pulsatory input, the proximal character of this small lake prevented the development of classic varved silts. Compressional deformation of shoreline sediments was due to winter lake ice push. Other deformational processes included the grounding of icebergs, water escape and syn-sedimentary downslope collapse. Observations from an adjacent small ice-marginal lake at Leirbreen provide support for several of the inferences drawn from the sediments of the former ice-dammed lake.  相似文献

Quaternary monogenetic volcanism in the High Cascades of Oregonis manifested by cinder cones, lava fields, and small shields.Near Crater Lake caldera, monogenetic lava compositions include:low-K (as low as 0?09% K2O) high-alumina olivine tholeiite (HAOT);medium-K. calc-alkaline basalt, basaltic andesite, and andesite;and shoshonitic basaltic andesite (2?1% K2O, 1750 ppm Sr at54% SiO2). Tholeiites have MORB-like trace element abundancesexcept for elevated Sr, Ba, and Th and low high field strengthelements (HFSE), and they represent near-primary liquids. Theyare similar to HAOTs from the Cascades and adjacent Basin andRange, and to many primitive basalts from intraoceanic arcs.Calc-alkaline lavas show a well-developed arc signature of highlarge-ion lithophile elements (LILE) and low HFSE. Their Zrand Hf concentrations are at least partly decoupled from thoseof Nb and Ta; HREE are low relative to HAOT. Incompatible elementabundances and ratios vary widely among basaltic andesites.Some calc-alkaline lavas vented near Mount Mazama contain abundantgabbroic microxcnoliths, and are basaltic andesitic magmas contaminatedwith olivine gabbro. A calc-alkaline basalt and a few basaltic andesites have MgOand compatible trace element contents that suggest only minorfractionation. There appears to be a compositional continuumbetween primitive tholeiitic and calc-alkaline lavas. Compositionalvariation within suites of comagmatic primitive lavas, boththoleiitic and calc-alkaline, mainly results from differentdegrees of partial melting. Sources of calc-alkaline primarymagmas were enriched in LILE and LREE by a subduction componentand contained residual garnet, whereas sources of HAOTs hadlower LILE and LREE concentrations and contained residual clinopyroxene.High and variable LILE and LREE contents of calc-alkaline lavasreflect variations in fluid-transported subduction componentadded to the mantle wedge, degree of partial melting, and possiblyalso interaction with rocks or partial melts in the lower crust. Andesites were derived from calc-alkaline basaltic andesitesby fractionation of plagioclase+augite+magnetite+apatite ? orthopyroxeneor olivine, commonly accompanied by assimilation. Many andesitesare mixtures of andesitic or dacitic magma and a basaltic orbasaltic andesitic component, or are contaminated with gabbroicmaterial. Mingled basalt, andesite, and dacite of Williams Craterformed by multi-component, multi-stage mixing of basaltic andesiticmagma, gabbro, and dacitic magma. The wide range of compositionsvented from monogenetic volcanoes near Crater Lake is a resultof the thick crust coupled with mild tectonic extension superimposedon a subduction-related magmatic arc.  相似文献

Velocity estimation technique using seismic data is often based on time/distance equations which are independent of direction, and even though we now know that many rocks are quite anisotropic, useful results have been obtained over the years from these isotropic estimates. Nevertheless, if velocities are significantly direction-dependent, then the isotropic assumption may lead to serious structural interpretation errors. Additionally, information on angle-dependence may lead to a better understanding of the lithology of the rocks under measurement. VSP and cross-well data may each lack the necessary aperture to estimate more than two velocity parameters for each wave type, and if the data straddle a symmetry axis, then these may be usefully chosen to be the direct velocities (from time-and-distance measurements along the axis) and NMO velocities (from differential time-offset measurements). These sets of two parameters define ellipses, and provide intermediate models for the variation of velocity with angle which can later be assembled and translated into estimates of the elastic moduli of the rocks under scrutiny. If the aperture of the measurements is large enough e.g. we have access to both VSP and cross-well data, we divide the procedure into two independent steps, first fitting best ellipses around one symmetry axis and then fitting another set around the orthogonal axis. These sets of four elliptical parameters are then combined into a new, double elliptical approximation. This approximation keeps the useful properties of elliptical anisotropy, in particular the simple relation between group and phase velocities which simplifies the route from the traveltimes measurements to the elastic constants of the medium. The inversion proposed in this paper is a simple extension of well-known isotropic schemes and it is conceptually identical for all wave types. Examples are shown to illustrate the application of the technique to cross-well synthetic and field P-wave data. The examples demonstrate three important points: (a) When velocity anisotropy is estimated by iterative techniques such as conjugate gradients, early termination of the iterations may produce artificial anisotropy. (b) Different components of the velocity are subject to different type of artifacts because of differences in ray coverage, (c) Even though most rocks do not have elliptical dispersion relations, our elliptical schemes represent a useful intermediate step in the full characterization of the elastic properties.  相似文献

Additional data for gabbro, GOG-1, were determined by instrumental-neutron-activation analysis, atomic-absorption spectrometry, and semi-quantitative spectrographic analysis. F ratios calculated in the analysis of variance for 26 sets of data for elements determined by the three methods were not significant, and hence the elements are distributed homogeneously among the bottles. The agreement between our data and the averages previously published ranges from very good to poor. More analytical data are necessary to establish reliable estimates of the concentrations of elements in GOG-1 and in two other gabbros so that three gabbros may be available to geochemists for use as standards.  相似文献

<正>The forewing of a termite from Early Miocene lake sediments in Otago,southern New Zealand is figured and described.It exhibits the generic characters of the damp-wood termite Stolotermes Hagen,but differs from forewings of the known species in size and venation pattern and is described as Stolotermes kupe sp.nov.S.kupe represents the first confident record of fossil Stolotermitidae and extends the fossil record of the family back to the Early Miocene.It also is the first direct evidence of fossil Isoptera from New Zealand,though silicified termite faecal pellets,referable to Kalotermes brauni,have been previously described.S.kupe indicates that Stolotermitidae has been present in the Australasian region since at least the Early Miocene.  相似文献
