Hydrological interactions between surface water and groundwater (GW) can be described using hydrochemical and biological methods. Surface water–groundwater interactions and their effects on groundwater invertebrate communities were studied in the Nakdong River floodplain in South Korea. Furthermore, the GW-Fauna-Index, a promising new index for assessing the strength of surface-water influence on groundwater, was tested. The influence of surface water on groundwater decreased with increasing depth and distance from the river. While hydrochemistry prevailingly reflected the origin of the waters in the study area (i.e. whether alluvial or from adjacent rock), faunal communities seemed to display an affinity to surface-water intrusion. Fauna reacted quickly to changes in hydrology, and temporal changes in faunal community structure were significantly linked to the hydrological situation in the floodplain. The metazoan faunal community and the GW-Fauna-Index allow a distinction between surface and subsurface waters with varying degrees of exchange. The results indicate that hydrological conditions are reflected by faunal assemblages on a high spatiotemporal resolution, and that surface-water intrusion can be estimated using the GW-Fauna-Index.  相似文献

Closed depressions (CDs) are lower lying areas where the sediment eroded from the surrounding soil surfaces draining towards the CD is trapped in the system. CDs have been reported in several regions of the European loess belt and are attributed either to natural processes (e.g. dissolution of subsurface horizons) or to human intervention (e.g. quarrying). Previous studies focussed mainly on cropland areas where, however, only few and largely filled in CDs remain. The objectives of this study were to i) assess the spatial distribution of CDs under forest and cropland, ii) to determine and compare the morphology of CDs under forest and under cropland, and iii) to determine the origin and age of these CDs under forest. In a study area located partly in ancient forest (13 km2) and partly in cropland (29 km2), a systematic survey revealed the presence of 71 CDs under forest (5·3 CD.km?2) and 30 CDs under cropland (1 CD.km?2). Comparison of their morphology showed that CDs under forest were significantly deeper, with steeper sidewalls and a smaller surface area because of the erosion and deposition processes acting on the CDs under cropland. By comparing CDs that had been under cropland for different time intervals, the rate of this morphological evolution could be reconstructed. Analysis of the soil stratigraphy of two representative CDs in the ancient forest area confirmed their origin as quarries. Most probably, calcareous loess was excavated since this soil horizon, about two to five meters thick, was completely absent within the CDs. Dating of the infilling of one CD by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) shows that the CD filled in between the first century BC and the fourth century AD. This dating corresponds to the dating of sediment deposits in nearby, human‐induced gullies that were attributed to an agricultural land use phase between the 18th century BC and the third century AD.  相似文献

The influence of the vertical transverse isotropy (VTI) on amplitude versus angle (AVA) responses is first studied on the linearized formula of the PP-reflection coefficient. Up to medium angles of incidence, as in the isotropic case, only two quantities can be retrieved, the second with less accuracy than the first. These quantities are the P-impedance and the S-impedance multiplied by 1− δ/2, where δ is one of the two anisotropic parameters introduced by Thomsen. To extend these results to the exact formulae, the AVA analysis is then formulated as an inverse problem and a least-squares cost function is defined. A study of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hessian of the least-squares cost function confirms these results. Though these results are dependent on the amount of data and on the maximum angle of incidence available, they are appropriate for small and medium angles of incidence. Thanks to this inverse formulation, this work can be extended to the case of multicomponent AVA responses. The addition of PS-reflection data further constrains the problem, but the S-impedance and δ are still coupled. However, the addition of SS-reflection data gives an estimation of both P- and S-impedances and δ. The last two parameters, the density and the second anisotropic parameter ɛ, remain difficult to determine, at least with small-to-medium angular apertures.  相似文献

Soil is a dynamic natural body and fundamental resource. Human activities influence intensively the natural processes in soils. They modify and accelerate the development of soils. In this investigation, the deposition of colluvial sediments (colluviation) and soil formation are proposed as geoindicators for a better understanding of long-term environmental changes and environmental impact assessment. Deposition of colluvial sediments during several time periods and subsequent soil formation under different land-use systems reflect important aspects on the long-term human interference in the environment. In this study, we hypothesize that intensive human activities and environmental changes during middle and late Holocene are responsible for a strong modification of soils in an investigation area in Schleswig–Holstein (Germany). Soil age information together with geomorphological data, physical, chemical and biological soil properties provide the database which is necessary to study the types and rates of colluviation and soil formation. After the investigation with a high resolution in time and space, results show that middle and late Holocene land-use changes and land management are responsible for soil formation in colluvial layers. Properties of soils and sediments vary intensively from Mesolithic until Modern times. Intensive soil formation took place during periods of geomorphodynamic stability in dense woodland. Evidence in our investigations shows that colluviation has a strong relation with decision-making and environmental degradation in the past. This confirms, too, that a geoindicator concept is needed to understand and to monitor long-term environmental changes and degradation.  相似文献

Unbaited phreatic traps are a promising new method for sampling subterranean limnofauna. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether such trap systems are suitable to gather representative samples of the physico-chemical parameters and the invertebrate fauna of the aquifer. Fifteen traps, installed in five groundwater bores, and four traps located in the hyporheic zone, were sampled twice monthly over a 1 year period (June 2003–June 2004). Water samples were removed in three separated fractions (hose, trap and aquifer water), analysed for physico-chemical and faunal characteristics and compared with one another. The study was carried out in the Nakdong River floodplain, Korea. Physico-chemical characteristics of trap and aquifer were similar, but differed greatly from the hose samples. Abundances of fauna inside the traps were higher than in the aquifer, whereas there were no differences in taxonomic composition of the trap and aquifer samples. Biases of abundances suspected due to the use of traps were negligible in the groundwater, though it is recommended that comparisons between groundwater and hyporheic abundances ascertained by traps be handled cautiously.  相似文献

Sediment delivery from hillslopes to trunk streams represents a significant pathway of mass transfer in the landscape, with a large fraction facilitated by gully systems. The internal gully geomorphic dynamics represent a considerable gap in many landscape and empirical erosion models, therefore a better understanding of these processes over longer timescales (10–104 years) is needed. This study analyses the sediment mass balance and storage dynamics within a headwater gully catchment in central Europe over the last ~12 500 years. Human induced erosion resulted in hillslope erosion rates ~2.3 times higher than under naturally de‐vegetated conditions (during the Younger Dryas), however the total sediment inputs to the gully system (and therefore gully aggradation), were similar. Net gully storage has consistently increased to become the second largest term in the sediment budget after hillslope erosion (storage is ~45% and ~73% of inputs during two separate erosion and aggradation cycles). In terms of the depletion of gully sediment storage, the sediment mass balance shows that export beyond the gully fan was not significant until the last ~500 years, due to reduced gully fan accommodation space. The significance of storage effects on the gully sediment mass balance, particularly the export terms, means that it would be difficult to determine the influences of human impact and/or climatic changes from floodplain or lake sedimentary archives alone and that the sediment budgets of the headwater catchments from which they drain are more likely to provide these mechanistic links. By means of a simple one-dimensional model some basic features of the spreading of cooling water are discussed. Based on the idea of equilibrium temperature, a numerical technique for the simulation of diffusion and cooling processes is presented. The technique is applied to a two-dimensional time-dependent model of the tide in the lower river Elbe. The measurements at the outlet of an existing nuclear power plant (Stade) are reproduced quantitatively.  相似文献
