Eutrophication Dynamics of Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The time and spatial variation of water quality in Tolo Harbour, a eutrophic landlocked semi-enclosed bay frequented by algal blooms, is studied using a dynamic eutrophication model. Hourly changes of tide levels and currents are computed by a link-node model assuming M2 tidal forcing. Phytoplankton growth is assumed to be limited by solar radiation, nitrogen and temperature. The model incorporates light acclimation by algae, self-shading, photosynthetic production, nutrient uptake, and a dynamic determination of the carbon to chlorophyll ratio. In particular, sediment-water-pollutant interactions are modelled via an anaerobic benthic layer segment. Using recorded pollution loads and environmental forcing as input, the model predictions of daily-averaged water quality are compared with the extensive water quality monitoring data of the Environmental Protection Department (EPD). The predicted spatial distribution and trends of algal biomass, inorganic nitrogen, dissolved oxygen (DO), as well as sediment oxygen demand (SOD), are in general agreement with field observations.  相似文献

Landslide susceptibility consists of an essential component in the day-to-day activity of human beings. Landslide incidents are typically happening at a low rate of recurrence when compared and in contrast to other events. This might be generated into main natural catastrophes relating to widespread and undesirable sound effects. Landslide hotspot area identification and mapping are used for the regional community to secure from this disaster. Therefore, this research aims to identify the hotspot areas of landslide and to generate maps using GIS, AHP, and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). MCDA techniques are applied under such circumstances to categorize and class decisions for successive comprehensive estimation or else to state possible from impossible potentiality with various landslides. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) constructively applies for conveying influence to different criteria within multi-criteria decision analysis. The causative landslide identifying factors utilized in this research were elevation, slope, aspect, soil type, lithology, distance to stream, land use/land cover, rainfall, and drainage density achieved from various sources. Subsequently, to explain the significance of each constraint into landslide susceptibility, all factors were found using the AHP technique. Generally, landslide susceptibility map factors were multiplied by their weights to acquire with the AHP technique. The result showed that the AHP methods are comparatively good quality estimators of landslide susceptibility identification in the Chemoga watershed. As the result, the Chemoga watershed landslide susceptibility map classes were classified as 46.52%, 13.83%.18.71%, 15.39%, and 5.55% of the occurred landslide fall to very low, low, moderate, high, and very high susceptibility zones, respectively. Performance and accuracy of modeled maps have been established using GPS field data and Google earth data landslide map and area under curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). As the result, validation depends on the ROC specifies the accuracy of the map formed with the AHP merged through weighted overly method illustrated very good accuracy of AUC value 81.45%. In general, the research outcomes inveterate the very good test consistency of the generated maps.

Occurrence of expansive soils in construction sites has serious implications on planning, design, construction, maintenance, and overall performance especially of lightweight engineering infrastructures. Such soils are particularly susceptible to large volume changes in response to moisture content fluctuations following seasonal climatic variations. This can lead to deformation of structures built up on them. For this study, soil samples were collected from the eastern part of Addis Ababa. Specific expansive soil engineering parameters namely; Atterberg limits (LL, PL and PI), free swell and cation exchange capacity were measured in a soil mechanics laboratory. Reflectance spectra of each soil sample were acquired in a remote sensing laboratory using ASD fieldspec full range spectrometer. A multivariate calibration method, partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis, through simple wavelength approach, was used to construct empirical prediction models for estimating engineering parameters of expansive soils from their respective reflectance spectra. Correlation coefficients of 0.90, 0.87, 0.71, 0.81 and 0.71 for CEC, LL, PL, PI and FS respectively were obtained. The correlation coefficients showed that large portion of variations in engineering parameters of expansive soils could be accounted for by spectral parameters. Apart from these high correlation coefficients, small root mean square errors of calibration (RMSEC) and prediction (RMSEP), standard error of calibration (SEC) and prediction (SEP) and minimum bias were obtained. The results indicate potential of spectroscopy in deriving engineering parameters of expansive soils from their respective reflectance spectra and hence, its potential applicability in supporting geotechnical investigations of such soils.  相似文献

Environmental management of marine fish culture in Hong Kong   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Marine fish farming is an important commercial practice in Hong Kong. Marine fish farms located in eutrophic coastal waters often face the threat of severe dissolved oxygen depletion associated with algal blooms and red tides. On the other hand, mariculture activities also contribute to pollution. The sustainable management of mariculture requires proper siting of the fish farms and stocking density control. Both of these are related to the carrying capacity of the water body concerned, which is mainly governed by its flushing characteristics. A simple method to determine the carrying capacity of a fish farm has been developed by using three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic modelling and its effective coupling with a diagenetic water quality model. A systematic methodology using numerical tracer experiments has been developed to compute the tidal flushing in a fish farm. The flushing time is determined from the results of a numerical tracer experiment using robust 3D hydrodynamic and mass transport models. A unit tracer concentration is initially prescribed inside the region of interest and zero elsewhere; the subsequent mass transport and the mass removal process are then tracked. The fish farms are usually situated in well-sheltered shallow embayments and may not connect directly to the open water. It is found that it is necessary to define both "local" and "system-wide" flushing times to represent the effectiveness of the mass exchange with the surrounding water body and the open sea respectively. A diagenetic water quality model simulating the sediment-water-pollutant interaction is employed to address the response of the water column and the benthic layer to pollution discharges. With the flushing rate reliably computed, the carrying capacity of the fish farm can be determined in terms of key water quality parameters: chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, organic nitrogen and potential lowest dissolved oxygen level on a day of negligible photosynthetic production. The predictions are well-supported by field data.  相似文献

Long-term Circulation and Eutrophication Model for Tolo Harbour,Hong Kong   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Since the early 1980s excessive discharges of organic waste into Tolo Harbour have created serious problems through nutrient enrichment. A number of eutrophication related problems have been reported which incurred financial losses of billions of dollars and serious ecological imbalance. This work addresses the development, verification and application of a water quality model to synthesize the available large database of water quality and to study water quality management issues of Tolo Harbour. Since detrimental water quality problems usually occur during summer when there is stratification and the water temperature is high, the tidally-averaged hydrodynamics and the relative contribution of gravitational circulation and tidal exchanges in Tolo Harbour have been studied. Gravitational circulation is found to be the dominant mixing process for most of the year, accounting for 70 percent of the mixing. A simple and tractable predictive two-layer mass transport and diagenetic dynamic eutrophication model has been developed. The model computes daily variation of key water quality variables in the water column: algal biomass, dissolved oxygen, organic-nitrogen, ammonium-nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, and carboneous oxygen demand. In addition, to study the response and impact of the seabed to the overall eutrophication process a sediment sub-model is developed. The diagenetic sediment sub-model computes explicitly the amount of nutrient recycled and the sediment oxygen demand exerted on the water column. The calibrated model has been validated against a 20 year water quality data base under a wide range of hydro-meteorological and environmental conditions. Both spatial and seasonal variation of observed water quality variables are reproduced. The verified model shows that a significant reduction of total nitrogen loading would be required to meet the water quality objectives, with a recovery time of three months for water column and more than two years for sediment.  相似文献
