Lithofacies analysis, pollen assemblages and radiocarbon age dates of 20 stratigraphic drill holes are used to develop an evolutionary history for late Quaternary sedimentation in two coastal embayments landward of the central Great Barrier Reef. Different physiographic settings of the embayments result in two contrasting styles of sedimentary sequence: (a) an exposed, moderate energy, beach barrier-lagoon system (Wyvuri Embayment) and (b) a protected, low energy, muddy inlet fill sequence (Mutchero Inlet). Despite sharp contrast in sequence style, similar depositional cycles occur in both embayments in response to late Quaternary sea level fluctuations including: (1) a last interglacial highstand (+2 m; c. 125 000 yr bp ) beach barrier (Wyvuri); (2) an early to mid-Holocene (8000–6100 yr bp ) transgressive beach barrier-lagoon (Wyvuri) and estuarine infill (Mutchero); and (3) mid-Holocene to present highstand beach barrier (Wyvuri) and estuarine (Mutchero) progradation. Preservation of such cycles in the stratigraphic record would produce a series of vertically stacked and offset linear barrier sands surrounded by lagoonal mud and fine grained shoreface sediment juxtaposed to muddy, estuarine infills. Sea level elevations are well recorded by the upward transition from Rhizophora-dominated intertidal mangrove mud to freshwater swamp (clearly identified by pollen analysis) and by the basal contacts of beach barrier sediments which sharply overlie the upper shoreface. Transgressive sedimentation is interrupted in both embayments by a constructional beach barrier (Wyvuri) and abbreviated progradation (Mutchero) corresponding to a — 5 m pause in relative sea level rise at c. 6800 yr bp . Sea level control of fine scale coastal sedimentation patterns is beginning to be widely recognized and provides an accurate analogue for stacked ancient sequences.  相似文献

This paper investigated the geotechnical properties of smectite-rich shale, and its implications as foundation material. Ten expansive shale samples were collected from foundation materials at Akpugo in Nkanu West L.G.A. of Enugu State, southeast Nigeria. Samples were subjected to grading, Atterberg limits-cum-compaction tests, slake durability, specific gravity, permeability, undrained triaxial tests and x-ray diffraction scan. Fines and sand contents of the soil samples range from 51–97% and 3–49% respectively. Liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index have average values of 60.7, 19.1 and 43.3% respectively. Linear shrinkage and free swell showed average of 16.3% and 76%. These results are indicative of predominant clay soil with high plasticity, compressibility and water holding capacity. XRD scan established presence of smectite and illite clay minerals, confirming soil high plasticity, capable of causing instability in foundation soil. The shale achieved maximum dry density range between 1.79 and 1.94 kg/m3 at optimum moisture content range of 6.9–12.8%, indicating poor to fair foundation materials. The shale cohesion ranges from 15 to 30 kPa while the angle of friction ranges between 10° and 18°, signifying an average strength soil material. Samples slake durability index and specific gravity fall within 24–55% and 2.50–2.58 respectively, suggesting non-durable and weak soil. Permeability of the samples ranges between 7.36 ×10?6 and 4.77 ×10?8 cm/s which suggested low drainage capable of causing water-log at sites. Therefore, the shale could be generally classified as poor to fair foundation material, which on moisture influx experience reduction in strength due to deterioration of its constituent minerals, especially clay and cement materials during the lifespan of engineering structures. Authors therefore recommend modification of foundation soil, appropriate foundation design and good drainage control as ways of improving stability of engineering structures underlain by expansive shale.  相似文献

The popularity of the work Guns, germs and steel (GGS) has served to bring the question of human–environment connections once again to the forefront of popular thought. We assert that the recent success of GGS represents both a persistence of environmental determinist logic and a contemporary trend that privileges the environment as the primary influence on human–environment relationships. The historical development of the human–environment field is reviewed from the cultural and political ecology (CAPE) perspective, with particular attention to illustrating the varying emphasis between humans and their environment. GGS is situated within this developing field through a critical analysis of the arguments and methods forwarded by Jared Diamond. The book is found to mirror earlier environmental determinism by failing to take into account many of the advances in human–environmental thought since the early twentieth century. Its popular success suggests the pitfalls of failures to acknowledge the complex, intertwined and indivisible relationship that exists among humans and their environment. Furthermore, there is evidence that the environmental determinism espoused in GGS has caught the attention of international development policymakers potentially influencing future outlays of aid and assistance to the developing world. These conclusions raise cautionary flags against repeating past theoretical mistakes by accepting simplistic, causal explanations based largely on a deterministic conception of the natural environment.  相似文献

THE EJECTION-SWEEP CHARACTER OF SCALAR FLUXES IN THE UNSTABLE SURFACE LAYER   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1  
In the atmospheric surface layer, it is widely accepted that ejection andsweep eddy motions, typically associated with coherent structures, areresponsible for much of the land-surface evaporation, sensible heat, andmomentum fluxes. The present study analyzes the ejection-sweep propertiesusing velocity and scalar fluctuation measurements over tall natural grassand bare soil surfaces. It is shown that momentum ejections and sweeps occurat equal frequencies (D eject D sweep 0.29) irrespective of surfaceroughness length or atmospheric stability conditions. Also, their magnitudesare comparable to values reported from open channel velocity measurements (Dsweep 0.33; D eject : 0.30). The scalar D eject is constant andsimilar in magnitude to the momentum D eject( 0.29) over both surfacesand for a wide range of atmospheric stability conditions, in contrast to thescalar D sweep. The scalar sweep frequency is shown to depend on the scalarskewness for the dynamic convective and free convective sublayers, but isidentical to D eject for the dynamic sublayer. The threshold scalar skewnessat which the D sweep dependence occurs is 0.25, in agreement with theaccepted temperature skewness value at near-neutral conditions. In contrastto a previous surface-layer experiment, this investigation demonstrates thatthe third-order cumulant expansion method (CEM) reproduces the measuredrelative flux contribution of ejections and sweeps (S0) for momentumand scalars at both sites. Furthermore, a linkage between S0 and thescalar variance budget is derived via the third-order CEM in analogy tomomentum. It is shown that S0 can be related to the flux divergenceterm and that such a relationship can be estimated from surface-layersimilarity theory, and the three sublayer model of Kader and Yaglom andproposed similarity functions.  相似文献

Triaxial sonic anemometer velocity and temperature measurements were used to investigate the local structure of the velocity and temperature fluctuations in the unstable atmospheric surface layer above a grass-covered forest clearing. Despite the existence of a 2/3 power law in the longitudinal velocity (2 decades) and temperature (1 decade) structure functions, local isotropy within the inertial subrange was not attained by the temperature field, although a near-isotropic state was attained by the velocity field. It was found that sources of anisotropy were due to interactions between the large-scale and small-scaleeddy motion, and due to localvelocity-thermal interactions. Statistical measures were developed and used to quantify these types of interactions. Other types of interactions were also measured but were less significant. The temperature gradient skewness was measured and found to be non-zero in agreement with other laboratory flow types for inertial subrange scales. Despite these interactions and anisotropy sources in the local temperature field, Obukhovs 1949hypothesis for the mixed velocity-temperature structure functions was found to be valid. Finally, our measurements show that while a 2/3 power-law in the longitudinal velocity structure function developed at scales comparable to five times the height from the ground surface (z), near-isotropic conditions wereachieved at scales smaller than z/2.  相似文献

The analysis of the aeolian content of marine cores collected off the coast of the Atacama Desert (Mejillones Bay, Chile) suggests that marine sediments can record inter‐annual to inter‐decadal variations in the regional southerly winds responsible for particle entrainment at the surface of the nearby desert. However, the establishment of a simple and direct correlation between the sediment and wind records is complicated by the difference of time scales between the erosion and accumulation processes. The aim of this work is to: (i) assess the inter‐annual variability of the surface winds responsible for the sand movements; and (ii) determine whether the integration over periods of several months completely smoothes the rapid changes in characteristics of the transported and deposited aeolian material. To accomplish this aim, 14 years of 10 m hourly wind speed, measured at the Cerro Moreno (Antofagasta) Airport between 1991 and 2003 and at the Orica Station between 2000 and 2004, were analyzed. For each year, the wind speed statistical distribution can be represented by a combination of two to three Weibull functions. Winds of the lowest Weibull mode are too weak to move the sand grains at the surface of the pampa; this is not the case for the intermediate mode and especially for the highest speed mode which are able to erode the arid surface and transport particles to the bay. In each individual year of the period of study, the highest speed mode only accounted for a limited number of strong erosion events. Quantitative analysis of the distribution of the friction velocities and of their impact on erosion using a saltation model suggests that, although all wind speeds above threshold produce erosion events, values around 0·45 m sec?1 contribute less to the erosion flux. This gap allows separation of the erosion events into low and high saltation modes. The correlation (r = 0·997) between the importance of the third Weibull mode and the extent of higher rate saltation indicates that the inter‐annual variability of the erosion at the surface of the pampa, as well as the transport of coarse particles (>100 μm), are directly related to inter‐annual variations in the prevalence of the strongest winds. Finally, a transport and deposition model is used to assess the possible impact of the wind inter‐annual variability on the deposition flux of mineral particles in the bay. The results suggest that inter‐annual differences in the wind speed distributions have a quantifiable effect on the intensity and size‐distribution of this deposition flux. This observation suggests that a detailed analysis of the sediment cores collected from the bay could be used for reconstructing the inter‐annual variability of past winds.  相似文献
