Palaeo-ice sheets are important analogues for understanding contemporary ice sheets, offering a record of ice sheet behaviour that spans millennia. There are two main approaches to reconstructing palaeo-ice sheets. Empirical reconstructions use the available glacial geological and chronological evidence to estimate ice sheet extent and dynamics but lack direct consideration of ice physics. In contrast, numerically modelled simulations implement ice physics, but often lack direct quantitative comparison with empirical evidence. Despite being long identified as a fruitful scientific endeavour, few ice sheet reconstructions attempt to reconcile the empirical and model-based approaches. To achieve this goal, model-data comparison procedures are required. Here, we compare three numerically modelled simulations of the former British–Irish Ice Sheet with the following lines of evidence: (a) position and shape of former margin positions, recorded by moraines; (b) former ice-flow direction and flow-switching, recorded by flowsets of subglacial bedforms; and (c) the timing of ice-free conditions, recorded by geochronological data. These model–data comparisons provide a useful framework for quantifying the degree of fit between numerical model simulations and empirical constraints. Such tools are vital for reconciling numerical modelling and empirical evidence, the combination of which will lead to more robust palaeo-ice sheet reconstructions with greater explicative and ultimately predictive power.  相似文献

Coal-seam gas production requires groundwater extraction from coal-bearing formations to reduce the hydraulic pressure and improve gas recovery. In layered sedimentary basins, the coalbeds are often separated from freshwater aquifers by low-permeability aquitards. However, hydraulic connection between the coalbed and aquifers is possible due to the heterogeneity in the aquitard such as the existence of conductive faults or sandy channel deposits. For coal-seam gas extraction operations, it is desirable to identify areas in a basin where the probability of hydraulic connection between the coalbed and aquifers is low in order to avoid unnecessary loss of groundwater from aquifers and gas production problems. A connection indicator, the groundwater age indictor (GAI), is proposed, to quantify the degree of hydraulic connection. The spatial distribution of GAI can indicate the optimum positions for gas/water extraction in the coalbed. Depressurizing the coalbed at locations with a low GAI would result in little or no interaction with the aquifer when compared to the other positions. The concept of GAI is validated on synthetic cases and is then applied to the north Galilee Basin, Australia, to assess the degree of hydraulic connection between the Aramac Coal Measure and the water-bearing formations in the Great Artesian Basin, which are separated by an aquitard, the Betts Creek Beds. It is found that the GAI is higher in the western part of the basin, indicating a higher risk to depressurization of the coalbed in this region due to the strong hydraulic connection between the coalbed and the overlying aquifer.  相似文献

Training Images from Process-Imitating Methods   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
The lack of a suitable training image is one of the main limitations of the application of multiple-point statistics (MPS) for the characterization of heterogeneity in real case studies. Process-imitating facies modeling techniques can potentially provide training images. However, the parameterization of these process-imitating techniques is not straightforward. Moreover, reproducing the resulting heterogeneous patterns with standard MPS can be challenging. Here the statistical properties of the paleoclimatic data set are used to select the best parameter sets for the process-imitating methods. The data set is composed of 278 lithological logs drilled in the lower Namoi catchment, New South Wales, Australia. A good understanding of the hydrogeological connectivity of this aquifer is needed to tackle groundwater management issues. The spatial variability of the facies within the lithological logs and calculated models is measured using fractal dimension, transition probability, and vertical facies proportion. To accommodate the vertical proportions trend of the data set, four different training images are simulated. The grain size is simulated alongside the lithological codes and used as an auxiliary variable in the direct sampling implementation of MPS. In this way, one can obtain conditional MPS simulations that preserve the quality and the realism of the training images simulated with the process-imitating method. The main outcome of this study is the possibility of obtaining MPS simulations that respect the statistical properties observed in the real data set and honor the observed conditioning data, while preserving the complex heterogeneity generated by the process-imitating method. In addition, it is demonstrated that an equilibrium of good fit among all the statistical properties of the data set should be considered when selecting a suitable set of parameters for the process-imitating simulations.  相似文献

Abstract— Grain size separates of the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) fireball layer at marine sites and the entire K-T boundary interval at nonmarine sites (fireball layer, ejecta layer, coal seam) were analysed for platinum-group elements (PGE: Ru, Ir, Ft, Pd, Rh) and Au using inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometry. X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy were performed on each fraction to establish the mineralogy. It was determined that the most abundant minerals in the finest fraction were a smectite-group mineral at marine K-T sites and illite-smectite mixed layer clay at nonmarine K-T sites. Positive correlation of PGE content and mineralogy indicates that the PGE are presently associated with these clay minerals which were likely formed by alteration of a condensed mafic phase (e.g., olivine or pyroxene). The correlation of clay mineral abundance with PGE content is imperfect because not all of the clay minerals in the fireball layer are derived by alteration of the original condensed ejecta. In addition, undetected PGE host(s), present in trace amounts, are likely also present.  相似文献

A field-portable analytical method is described for the semi-quantitative determination of Cu, Mn and Zn in oceanic sulphide minerals. Samples were prepared on board ship and analyzed using the AAZ-2 field portable atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The method has general applicability to a variety of field locations at sea or on land. Analyte concentrations ranging from the ppm to percent levels could be determined by selecting the appropriate analytical wavelengths and sample dilution factors. Samples were dissolved using hydrochloric and nitric acids in sealed teflon vessels. Concentrations of Cu, Mn and Zn were determined with an accuracy of approximately 10% when field results were compared with determinations subsequently carried out on the same samples in the laboratory by flame atomic absorption methods.  相似文献

The Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) at 9–16°E and 52–53°Sis characterized by ultra-slow, oblique spreading and containsone of the few documented occurrences of pyroxenite veins associatedwith abyssal peridotites. The origin of these uncommon lithologiesis still debated. We present a detailed study (including electronmicroprobe and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma massspectrometry) of spinel websterites collected during Cruise162, Leg 9, of the R.V. Knorr. Rare earth element patterns inclinopyroxenes (Cpx) lead us to discard a possible origin ofthe pyroxenites as residues from partial melting of garnet pyroxenites(i.e. relics of a layered mantle protolith). Their compositionand cumulate texture (when not obscured by mylonitization relatedto emplacement on the seafloor) are better interpreted in termsof fractional crystallization from a basaltic melt at relativelyhigh pressure. Evidence for a high pressure of crystallizationincludes the lack of plagioclase in the cumulate assemblageand the high Al2O3 contents of the pyroxenes: up to 5 wt % inorthopyroxene (Opx) and up to 7 wt % in Cpx. These values areamong the highest reported for pyroxenes in a mid-ocean ridgesetting. Sub-solidus breakdown of spinel to plagioclase (nowaltered) is observed in one sample, providing a rough estimateof the final equilibration pressure of these cumulates, around0· 6–0· 7 GPa (plagioclase–spineltransition for a bulk pyroxenite composition). The inferredpyroxenite parent melts were close to equilibrium with the associatedresidual peridotites; some samples have a slightly evolved compositionin terms of the Mg-number [Mg/(Mg + total Fe)]. These parentalmelts had major and trace element compositions consistent witha mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) affinity, although they werenot rigorously identical to MORB. Among other characteristics, these melts were relatively depleted in highly incompatibleelements. We propose that they correspond to the latest, shallowest, incremental melt fractions produced during fractional decompressionmelting of a normal MORB (N-MORB) mantle source. These meltsexperienced fractional crystallization as soon as they segregatedfrom the peridotite matrix, moved upward, and crossed the lithosphere–asthenosphereboundary (defined here as the base of the conductive lid). Asa consequence, these shallow melt fractions produced beneathmid-ocean ridges did not fully mix with melt fractions producedand extracted at greater depths. Our study provides concreteevidence for the actuality of pyroxene crystallization in meltchannels beneath mid-ocean ridges at relatively high pressures,a process frequently invoked to account for the ‘pyroxeneparadox’ in MORB petrogenesis. Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) is thought to be a key contributor to the strength and stability of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), but the future of Mediterranean-Atlantic water exchange is uncertain. It is chiefly dependent on the difference between Mediterranean and Atlantic temperature and salinity characteristics, and as a semi-enclosed basin, the Mediterranean is particularly vulnerable to future changes in climate and water usage. Certainly, there is strong geologic evidence that the Mediterranean underwent dramatic salinity and sea-level fluctuations in the past. Here, we use a fully coupled atmosphere–ocean General Circulation Model to examine the impact of changes in Mediterranean-Atlantic exchange on global ocean circulation and climate. Our results suggest that MOW strengthens and possibly stabilises the AMOC not through any contribution towards NADW formation, but by delivering relatively warm, saline water to southbound Atlantic currents below 800 m. However, we find almost no climate signal associated with changes in Mediterranean-Atlantic flow strength. Mediterranean salinity, on the other hand, controls MOW buoyancy in the Atlantic and therefore affects its interaction with the shallow-intermediate circulation patterns that govern surface climate. Changing Mediterranean salinity by a factor of two reorganises shallow North Atlantic circulation, resulting in regional climate anomalies in the North Atlantic, Labrador and Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian Seas of ±4 °C or more. Although such major variations in salinity are believed to have occurred in the past, they are unlikely to occur in the near future. However, our work does suggest that changes in the Mediterranean’s hydrological balance can impact global-scale climate.  相似文献
