The area of Thal Doab is located in the Indus Basin and is underlain by a thick alluvial aquifer called the Thal Doab aquifer (TDA). The TDA is undergone intense hydrological stress owing to rapid population growth and excessive groundwater use for livestock and irrigated agricultural land uses. The potential impact of these land uses on groundwater quality was assessed using a DRASTIC model in a Geographic Information System environment. Seven DRASTIC thematic maps were developed at fixed scale and then combined into a groundwater vulnerability map. The resultant vulnerability index values were grouped into four zones as low, moderate, high and very high. The study has established that 76% of the land area that is underlain by the TDA has a high to very high vulnerability to groundwater contamination mainly because of a thin soil profile, a shallow water table and the presence of soils and sediments with high hydraulic conductivity values. In addition, only 2 and 22% of the total area lie in low and moderate vulnerability zones, respectively. The outcomes of this study can be used to improve the sustainability of the groundwater resource through proper land-use management.  相似文献

Biochar is considered a promising amendment for the reduction of metal concentration in plants; however, the effects of biochar in terms of dose and feedstock on metal uptake by plants remain widely unclear. In the current study, three individual biochars were prepared at 450 °C from different feedstocks (wheat straw, sukh chain (Pongamia pinnata), and cotton sticks). The main aim was to evaluate their ability to remediate cadmium (Cd)-spiked soil in terms of growth response and Cd uptake by wheat (Triticum aestivum) tissues. Biochars were separately applied at 0, 1, and 2% (w/w) in Cd-spiked soil and wheat was grown until maturity in pots and then morphological and physiological parameters and Cd concentrations in grains, roots, and shoots were determined. The post-harvest soil was analyzed for extractable Cd concentrations. Plants grown in Cd-spiked soil treated with biochars had higher seed germination, lengths of roots, shoots, and spikes, grains per spike and leaf relative water contents, chlorophyll contents, and dry weight of roots, shoots, and grains as compared to the untreated control. Biochar treatments significantly decreased the Cd concentrations in shoots, roots, and grains as well as total Cd uptake by grains. Soil extractable Cd concentrations were significantly decreased with biochar treatments. The application of 2.0% wheat straw biochar was the most efficient treatment in increasing grain yield and decreasing Cd in grains as well as soil extractable Cd than the other two biochars and doses applied.  相似文献

The Wheeler diagram is a type of chronostratigraphic chart and is one of the fundamental instruments available in the geologists' toolkit that is used to understand spatiotemporal relationships of strata. Over the last four decades, these diagrams have continued to improve due to advances in seismic technology. This article examines the historical developments behind Wheeler diagrams, not only stressing their merits, but also their pitfalls and the role that sequence stratigraphic principles have played in interpreting these diagrams. It is emphasized that the diagrams are only complete if one utilizes the thicknesses of a sequence stratigraphic unit (sequence, systems tracts) – a missing dimension that turns a 3D Wheeler diagram into 4D. The article also argues that the latter 4D diagrams represent the future for Wheeler diagrams.  相似文献

An integrated assessment of emissions of some important refrigerant ozone depleting substances (ODSs) (CFC-11, CFC-12, HCFC-141b and HFC-134a) and their contributed ozone depletion potentials (ODPs) and global warming potentials (GWPs) have been made in the megacity Lahore (Pakistan) for the period from 2005 to 2013. During the production of 6.488 million refrigerator units, the cumulative estimated emissions of CFC-11, CFC-12, HCFC-141b and HFC-134a were 129.7, 6.8, 1257 and 104 mega grams (1 Mg = 106 grams). The estimated GWP (CO2-eq) and ODP (CFC 11-eq) associated with production phase emissions of these four gases were 616.07, 73.52, 910.96, and 87.36 kilotonnes, and 129.7, 6.8, 139.4, and 0 tonnes, respectively. ODP of HFC-134a is considered to be zero. In addition, the repair and maintenance of 81.2 thousand units resulted in 10.8 Mg emissions of CFC-12 with 10.8 tonnes ODP(CFC 11-eq) and 117,802 tonnes GWP (CO2-eq) that were higher than the HFC-134a emissions recorded at 4.3 Mg causing 4563 tonnes GWP(CO2-eq). A decrease in ODP (CFC 11-eq) and GWP (CO2-eq) at the rate of ?8.3% and ?8.2% per year is observed to be contributed by all the selected ODSs during the study period.  相似文献

The Punjab Platform is a gently dipping monocline that has been drilled since the 1960s with a low success ratio. Most of the drilling targets in the past were based on the structural interpretation. Furthermore, the exploration focus remained in Paleozoic sequences, and little attention has been paid to the Cretaceous systems. In this paper, a prograding Cretaceous (Sembar-Goru) mega-sequence is subdivided into three sequences using a semi-automated and integrated workflow. A data-driven chronostratigraphic chart is prepared, which revealed several regressive stages in the study area. The sands developed during these stages are laterally sealed by shales and claystones that form a stratigraphic play. The stratigraphic play area lies in a shoreface environment where shoreface sands are expected to be charged by underlying Lower Cretaceous black shales. A prominent gas cap above the proposed stratigraphic play further increases the confidence on the presence of a reservoir. This paper is the first attempt to study the Cretaceous deltaic sequences in the study area, which has remained unexplored for the last six decades.  相似文献
