We performed geodetic strain rate analyses in southern Italy, using new GPS velocities. Two-dimensional strain and rotation
rate fields were estimated and results show that most of the shortening is distributed in the northern Sicily offshore. Extension
becomes more evident and comparable with shortening on the eastern side of the same margin, and greater in the eastern Sicily
offshore. Principal shortening and extension rate axes are consistent with long-term geological features: seismic reflection
profiles show both active compressive and extensional faults affecting Pleistocene strata. We show evidence for contemporaneous
extension and transtension in the Cefalù Basin. Combining geodetic data and geological features point to the coexistence of
independent geodynamic processes, i.e., the active E–W backarc spreading in the hangingwall of the Apennines subduction zone
and shortening along the southern margin of the Tyrrhenian backarc basin operated by the NNW-motion of Africa relative to

The possibility of a net rotation of the lithosphere with respect to the mantle is generally overlooked since it depends on the adopted mantle reference frames,which are arbitrary.We review the geological and geophysical signatures of plate boundaries,and show that they are markedly asymmetric worldwide.Then we compare available reference frames of plate motions relative to the mantle and discuss which is at best able to fit global tectonic data.Different assumptions about the depths of hotspot sources(below or within the asthenosphere,which decouples the lithosphere from the deep mantle) predict different rates of net rotation of the lithosphere relative to the mantle.The widely used no-net-rotation(NNR) reference frame,and low(0.2°-0.4° /Ma) net rotation rates(deep hotspots source) predict an average net rotation in which some plates move eastward relative to the mantle(e.g.,Nazca).With fast(1° /Ma) net rotation(shallow hotspots source),all plates,albeit at different velocity,move westerly along a curved trajectory,with a tectonic equator tilted about 30° relative to the geographic equator.This is consistent with the observed global tectonic asymmetries. 相似文献

We have computed motions of the major plates (seven large plates and seven medium‐sized plates) and 38 microplates relative to the hotspot reference frame, and present velocities of these 52 plates. Moreover, using updated plate boundaries for the present, we have computed new geometrical factors for plates and microplates, useful for kinematic calculations and to obtain the net‐rotation of the lithosphere and plate velocities in the mean‐lithosphere reference frame. Instead of a continuum or gradational distribution of the plates by size, the plates clearly partition into three groups each having their own characteristics. For the seven large plates, rotation poles generally lie in high latitudes; the seven medium‐sized plates have rotation poles in a restricted equatorial area; the 38 small plates show the greatest scatter. Moreover subsets of the 52 plates reveal differing fractal behaviour: the large, middle and small groupings each have a characteristic fractal dimension, suggestive of microplate clustering.
