Several significant international incidents in Asian exclusive economic zones (EEZs) have underscored the ambiguity and lack of agreement regarding the regime governing foreign military activities in coastal States’ EEZs. A group of senior officials and analysts participated in their personal capacities in a dialogue from 2002–2005 that discussed the issues with a view to improving mutual understanding of the regime and finding areas of agreement. The Tokyo meeting in September 2005 reached consensus on some voluntary, non-binding guidelines that are presented here. The guidelines are based selectively on the 1982 UNCLOS, State practice and emerging ‘soft’ law, and attempt to balance the interests of coastal States and user States. It is hoped that they may serve as the basis for discussion and eventual agreements between governments.  相似文献

High resolution SeaWiFS data was used to detect red tide events that occurred in the Ariake Sound, Japan, a small embayment known as one of the most productive areas in Japan. SeaWiFS chlorophyll data clearly showed that a large red tide event, which damaged seaweed (Nori) cultures, started early in December 2000 in Isahaya Bay, expanded to the whole sound and persisted to the end of February 2001. The monthly average of SeaWiFS data from May 1998 to December 2001 indicated that the chlorophyll peaks appeared twice a year, in early summer and in fall, after the peaks of rain and river discharge. The SeaWiFS data showed that the red tide event during 2000–2001 winter was part of the fall bloom; however, it started later and continued significantly longer than other years. Satellite ocean color data is useful to detect the red tide; however the algorithms require improvement to accurately estimate chlorophyll in highly turbid water and in red tide areas.  相似文献

Process length variation of cysts of the dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum (Claparède et Lachmann) Bütschli in surface sediments from the North Pacific was investigated. The average process length showed a significant inverse relation to annual seawater density: σt annual = ?0.8674 × average process length + 1029.3 (R2 = 0.84), with a standard error of 0.78 kg m?3. A sediment trap study from Effingham Inlet in British Columbia revealed the same relationship between average process length and local seawater density variations. In the Baltic–Skagerrak region, the average process length variation was related significantly to annual seawater density: σt annual = 3.5457 × average process length ? 993.28 (R2 = 0.86), with a standard error of 3.09 kg m?3. These calibrations cannot be reconciled, which accentuates the regional character of the calibrations. This can be related to variations in molecular data (small subunit, long subunit and internal transcribed spacer sequences), which show the presence of several genotypes and the occurrence of pseudo‐cryptic speciation within this species. The pressure dependence of the three lattice parameters and unit cell volume of fayalite (Fe2SiO4 olivine) was determined by X-ray diffraction under hydrostatic pressures up to 70 kbar. In order to eliminate stress inhomogeneity within a composite material consisting of a specimen mixed with an internal-pressure standard, a liquid (1 : 1 mixture of ethanol and methanol) was used as a pressure-transmitting medium. The isothermal bulk modulus calculated on the basis of the second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state gives the values K0 = 1.19 ± 0.10 Mbar and K0′ = 7 ± 4, and if we assume K0′ = 5: K0 = 1.24 ± 0.02 Mbar. Three axes of fayalite were found to be compressible in the following order, b >c >a. Comparisons with the results obtained under non-hydrostatic compression are made.  相似文献

Summary Magnetic and crystallographic properties of solid solutionsxFeTiO3. (1–x) Fe2O3 of hematite (Fe2O3) and ilmenite (FeTiO3), which have rhombohedral crystal structure, are examined in detail for the whole range of 0 x 1. Samples examined are mineral grains separated out from natural rocks and artificially synthesized ones. The minerals of the hematite-ilmenite series for 0.55<x are ferromagnetic and their Curie-point decreases in proportion to increase inx, becoming 0 C aroundx=0.8. Those for 0.55 >x >0 are feeble ferromagnetic, probably being anti-ferromagnetic just same as hematite. Finally probable cause of the ferromagnetism forx>0.55 is briefly discussed. It seems that presence of ferromagnetic ilmenite must always be taken into consideration whenever magnetism of rocks is studied in relation to various geophysical phenomena.
Zusammenfassung Die magnetischen und krystallographischen Eigenschaften der festen LösungenxFeTiO3. (1–x) Fe2O3 von Hämatit (Fe2O3) und Ilmenit (FeTiO3), die eine rhombohedrale Krystallstruktur haben, wurden im ganzen Bereich von 0 x 1 ausführlich untersucht. Die untersuchten Proben waren aus Naturgesteinen getrennten sowie aus zusammengesetzten künstlichen Mineralkörner. Die Minerale der Hämatit-Ilmenitschen Reihe von 0.55<x sind ferromagnetisch, und ihr Curie-Punkt nimmt proportional mit der Zunahme vonx ab, und fallsx ungefähr 0.8 erreicht, wird er 0 C. Die Minerale von 0.55 >x >0 sind hingegen schwach ferromagnetisch, und vielleicht sind sie genau wie das Hämatit antiferromagnetisch. Zum Schlusse wurde die wahrscheinliche Ursache des Ferromagnetismus im Umfang von x>0.55 kurz besprochen. Es scheint, dass man das Vorhandensein von ferromagnetischem Ilmcnit immer dann in Betracht ziehen muss, wenn man den Gesteinmagnetismus in Bezug auf die verschiedenen geophysikalischen Phänomene untersucht.

Résumé On étudie les proprietés magnétiques et cristallographiques des solutions solides rhombohédralesxFeTiO3. (1–x) Fe2O3 de l'hématite (Fe2O3) et de l'ilménite (FeTiO3) pour l'étendue totale de 0 x 1. Les échantillons examinés sont des minéraux séparés par des grains naturels et des grains artificiellement synthétisés. On montre que les minéraux de la série hématite-ilménite sont ferromagnétiques pourx>0.55 et que leur point de Curie diminue en proportion à l'acroissement de x: il est atteind à 0 C quandx est environ 0.8. Les minéraux pour 0.55 >x >0 sont faiblement ferromagnétiques, étant probablement antiferromagnétiques comme l'hématite pure. Finalement, on discute briévement l'origine probable du ferromagnétisme des solutions solides dans l'étenduex>0.55. Il semble que la présence de l'ilménite ferromagnétique doit Être considérée lorsqu'on étudie le magnétisme des roches par rapport aux divers phénomènes géophysiques.

Myanmar is tenth among the world’s fish-producing countries and third in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). To understand the mechanisms underlying the high production, oceanographic and phytoplankton surveys, including primary productivity measurements based on pulse amplitude modulation fluorometry, were conducted near an active fishing ground near Myeik City. Three surveys, one in each of the representative seasons and covering the characteristic coastal environments, showed well-defined seasonality in primary production and phytoplankton occurrence. End of the dry season was the most productive, with productivity of 2.59 ± 1.56 g C m?2 day?1 and high concentration of chlorophyll a (3.14 ± 2.64 µg L?1). In this season, the phytoplankton population was dominated by high densities of the diatoms Bellerochea horologicalis and Chaetoceros curvisetus, whereas primary productivity was low at the onset of the dry season, 1.36 ± 0.77 g C m?2 day?1. However, this low primary production might be compensated by activation of microbial food chains originating from high dissolved organic carbon. The rainy season exhibited the lowest production, 6.6% of the end of the dry season, due to the extensive discharge of turbid water from the rivers which lowered euphotic layer depth and resulted in an unusually high diffuse attenuation coefficient of 2.30 ± 1.03 m?1. This incident of turbid water may be related to soil erosion from deforestation and mangrove deterioration. This research reveals the seasonal trend in Myanmar’s coastal productivity and its relationship to the tropical monsoon climate as well as emphasizing the importance of tropical coastal environments to the sustainability of the fisheries.  相似文献

Oceanic tholeiite glass has been reacted with natural seawater at 25°–500° C, 1 kbar, with both low (5) and high (50) water/rock mass ratios. Initial experiments were conducted at constant temperatures between 100° C and 500° C (100° intervals) in order to characterize the mineralogy and chemical exchange trends for both water/rock ratios. However, the primary purpose of this investigation was to study the chemical and mineralogical changes that may take place as reacted seawater cools as it traverses a temperature gradient before exiting onto the seafloor, as may happen in some submarine hydrothermal systems. Consequently, a series of cooling or temperature gradient experiments were performed in which seawater that had reacted with basalt at 500° C was cooled to 25° C in a step-wise fashion; mineralogy and fluid chemistry were determined at 100 degree intervals during cooling.For all of the experiments, the elemental exchange trends were the same. With respect to the initial sea-water, Fe, Mn, Ca, Si and H+ increased while Na and Mg decreased. However, the extent of the exchange depended heavily on the temperature and water/rock ratio. During cooling, fluid compositions in the temperature gradient runs generally approached those of the constant temperature experiments. Even though fluid compositions were very similar at 500° C for both water/rock ratios, the high water/rock ratio systems were more efficient in leaching transition metals from the rock and maintained substantial concentrations in solution during cooling, even to temperatures as low as 25° C. The Fe/Mn ratio in the fluid, however, was quite different for the two water/rock ratios; consequently, the effective water/rock ratio appears to be one parameter that can control the Fe/Mn ratio in exiting hydrothermal fluids and may influence the Fe/Mn ratio in metal-rich sediments.Alteration minerals produced in these seawater/ basalt experiments are very similar to those found at submarine springs on the East Pacific Rise, 21° N. Iron sulfides, pyrite and pyrrhotite, precipitated during cooling for both water/rock ratios, demonstrating the ore-forming potential of submarine hydrothermal systems.  相似文献
