Observations have consistently pointed out that the longitudinal and latitudinal motions of sunspots are correlated. The magnitude of the covariance was found to increase with latitude, and its sign was found to be positive in the N-hemisphere and negative in the S-hemisphere. This correlation was believed to be due to the underlying turbulence where the sunspot flux tubes are anchored, and the covariance had the right sign and magnitude needed to explain the transfer of angular momentum toward the equator through Reynolds stresses. Here we present an alternate explanation for these sunspot velocity correlations: It is believed that the dynamo operates in a thin overshoot layer beneath the base of the convection zone, and the flux tubes generated there produce sunspots at the photosphere. By studying the dynamics of flux tubes emerging from the base of the convection zone to the photosphere, we show that these velocity correlations of sunspots could be merely a consequence of the effect of Coriolis force on rising flux tubes. The effect of the Coriolis force, as demonstrated by even a back-of-the-envelope calculation, is to push the faster rotating spots equatorward and the slower rotating spots poleward, giving rise to a correlation in their longitudinal and latitudinal velocities, which is positive in the N-hemisphere and negative in the S-hemisphere. The increase in the correlation with latitude is due to the increase in magnitude of the Coriolis force. Hence we show that these velocity correlations might have nothing to do with the Reynolds stresses of the underlying turbulence. We present analyses of observations, and show that the covariances of plages are an order of magnitude higher than the sunspot covariances. If plages and sunspots share the same origin, and if their horizontal velocity correlations are wholly due to the effect of Coriolis force on rising flux tubes, then the study of their dynamics suggests that the flux tubes that form plages should have diameters of a couple of thousand km at the base of the convection zone and remain intact until they reach the photosphere, whereas sunspots should be formed by a collection of small flux tubes (each measuring about a hundred km in diameter), that rise through the convection zone as individual elements and coalesce when they emerge through the photosphere.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under Cooperative Agreement with the National Science Foundation. 相似文献

The distribution and abundance of dinoflagellate cysts in recent sediments from Visakhapatnam harbour, east coast of India was investigated and compared with sediment characteristics and physico-chemical variables of the overlying water column. The cyst abundance varied from 11 to 1218 cysts g–1 dry sediment. Changes in the cyst assemblages from phototrophic to heterotrophic forms were observed from inner to outer harbour stations, and related to changes in environmental characteristics. Enhanced cyst production of potentially harmful dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum was recorded in the inner harbour stations with higher nutrient concentrations. Protoperidinium cysts were the most diversified group, and were dominant in the outer harbour stations having improved water conditions and circulation. This study points out the potential use of dinoflagellate cyst populations in providing information on environmental conditions. 相似文献

Nucleation properties of different alcoholic solutions of Benzoin and Benzoin dust have been studied by varying the seeding temperature in a laboratory Cold Chamber. In the present study, three different alcoholic solutions are being used and these are due to the standard Ethyl alcohol, one higher alcohol i.e. Isopropyle alcohol and one lower alcohol i.e. Methyl alcohol. In addition, Benzil dust and droplets of Acetone and Chloroform have been used to examine if these agents have any ice nucleation ability. It has been observed that all alcoholic solutions of Benzoin have sufficient ice nucleation ability at the negative side of 0°C, with the maximum concentration occurring at −14.4°C. In case of Benzoin dust, the nucleation ability is better on the positive side of 0°C than the negative side. On the other hand, Benzil dust has insignificant nucleation ability and the droplets of two other agents have no nucleation ability at all.Considering the chemical as well as crystalline structure, one can conclude that the presence of OH group in the seeding molecule plays the central role in ice nucleation/hydrate crystal formation. In fact, a number of supplementary experiments like crystal growth in an incubator, XRD analysis and NMR study are performed to identify the nature of crystals formed by Benzoin dust above 0°C. One can conclude that these are hydrate crystals of Benzoin with water caging around Benzoin crystals. 相似文献

Runs of three regional climate models (RCMs) dynamically downscaling the outputs of atmosphere?Cocean coupling general circulation models (AOGCMs) are studied. These RCMs are NCAR-MM5, NCEP-RSM (Regional Spectral Model), and Purdue-PRM (Purdue Regional Model). A useful approach is developed to compare the variability, error, and spatial distribution of model-simulated results with respect to the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) datasets over East Asia and seven sub-regions during the 1990s. The results show that NCEP-RSM outperforms the other two in meeting criteria selected on evaluating the model performance. Furthermore, three super-ensemble approaches are tested on merging RCMs?? outputs. The inverse of the square error summation (ISES) method is selected as a suitable method with a generally good performance during the verification period. The projected future climate changes by ISES indicate larger temperature increases over high-latitude continent and smaller over low-latitude maritime areas. Rainfall will increase in summer over the central simulation domain, i.e. the eastern China, but decrease in winter, which are clearly linked to the variation in the synoptic airflows. Also, a more frequent occurrence of extreme rainfall events than what happened in the 1990s is projected. The projection over Taiwan suggests strong warming in summer, followed by autumn, winter, and spring. The interaction between the synoptic flow and the local terrain affects significantly the changes in precipitation. In general, larger change of the variability of rainfall will be over areas with lesser rainfall in the future, while lesser change will be over areas with more projected rainfall. 相似文献

This study attempts to assess the spatial variation of fluvial hydraulics with special emphasis on hydrological components at upper, middle and lower part of the Kharsoti river basin. The study encompasses the scenario of a micro bedrock river of India in the post monsoon period. This paper includes the study of hydrological components such as discharge, velocity, shear stress, stream power, specific stream power, width-depth relation and roughness and its interrelationships with different parts of the river basin with related mathematical equations and identification of major river bed erosive zones coupled with geo-hydrological components with geological explanation. Kharsoti is a typical example of rejuvenated antecedent tributary river of Subarnarekha River basin in Chota Nagpur Plateau. It is necessary to give a new threshold to the quantitative methods regarding the fluvial hydraulic studies under a systematic scientific geographical and hydrological background. The results also involve some specific techniques, equations and GIS mapping. The result of this study will help to open the scenario of hydraulics of a micro river basin in a contemporary method. 相似文献

Howard (1993) finds a relationship between the tilt angles of BMRs (Bipolar Magnetic Regions) and the separation between their leading and following polarities; the tilt angle increases with polarity separation. Here we present a more detailed analysis of this relationship and show that this effect constrains the strength of the magnetic field at the bottom of the convection zone to a value between 40 and 150 kG, which confirms the constraints put by D'Silva and Choudhuri (1993) based on Joy's law (the tilt-latitude relationship), through an entirely different approach.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under CooperativeOperated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under Cooperative 相似文献
