Mercury speciation and its distribution in surface and deep waters of the Mediterranean Sea were studied during two oceanographic cruises on board the Italian research vessel URANIA in summer 2003 and spring 2004 as part of the Med Oceaneor and MERCYMS projects. The study included deep water profiles of dissolved gaseous Hg (DGM), reactive Hg (RHg), total Hg (THg), monomethyl Hg (MeHg) and dimethyl Hg (DMeHg) in open ocean waters. Average concentrations of measured Hg species were characterized by seasonal and spatial variations. Overall average THg concentrations ranged between 0.41 and 2.65 pM (1.32 ± 0.48 pM) and were comparable to those obtained in previous studies of the Mediterranean Sea. A significant fraction of Hg was present as “reactive” Hg (average 0.33 ± 0.32 pM). Dissolved gaseous Hg (DGM), which consists mainly of Hg0, represents a considerable proportion of THg (average 20%, 0.23 ± 0.11 pM). The portion of DGM typically increased towards the bottom, especially in areas with strong tectonic activity (Alboran Sea, Strait of Sicily, Tyrrhenian Sea), indicating its geotectonic origin. No dimethyl Hg was found in surface waters down to the depth of 40 m. Below this depth, its average concentration was 2.67 ± 2.9 fM. Dissolved fractions of total Hg and MeHg were measured in filtered water samples and were 0.68 ± 0.43 pM and 0.29 ± 0.17 pM for THg and MeHg respectively. The fraction of Hg as MeHg was in average 43%, which is relatively high compared to other ocean environments. The concentrations reported in this study are among the lowest found in marine environments and the quality of analytical methods are of key importance. Speciation of Hg in sea water is of crucial importance as THg concentrations alone do not give adequate data for understanding Hg sources and cycling in marine environments. For example, photoinduced transformations are important for the presence of reactive and elemental mercury in the surface layers, biologically mediated reactions are important for the production/degradation of MeHg and DGM in the photic zones of the water column, and the data for DGM in deep sea indicate the natural sources of Hg in geotectonicaly active areas of the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

Summary Ten manganese nodules from a manganese nodule field in the northeast Pacific were chemically and mineralogically investigated.Two kinds of growth-zones could be observed within these nodules; according to structure they are called laminated zones and dendritic zones.Some correlations between sediment layers and manganese nodules zones could be observed, as follows:Dendritic zones in manganese nodules are products of diagenetic mobilization of metals from the sediment-they correspond to the sediment layers in which diagenetic processes took place.Laminated zones in manganese nodules are products of precipitation of hyroxides from sea water. They correspond to periods of sedimentation without diagenetic mobilization of metals.Ratios for Mn to Ni, Cu, Zn, and Mg are constant through different growth zones, independent of the form in which manganese occurs.Ratio for Co to Fe changes from laminated zones to dendritic zones.The only component which changes its content with diagenesis seems to be water: older parts of nodules contain less water than younger parts.Due to the described results the growth of manganese nodules can be adjusted in the geological record. The history of existent nodules begins within the sedimentation hiatus between Early Miocene and Late Pliocene. The sedimentation record is reflected in the structure of manganese nodules.

Zusammenfassung Zehn Manganknollen aus einem Manganknollenfeld im Nordost-Pazifik wurden chemisch und mineralogisch untersucht.Zwei Arten von Wachstumszonen konnten innerhalb dieser Knollen beobachtet werden; sie wurden nach ihren jeweiligen Strukturen laminierte und dendritische Zonen genannt. Zwischen den Zonen in den Manganknollen und den Schichten im Sediment konnten Zusammenhänge beobachtet werden: Dendritische Zonen in den Manganknollen sind Produkte der diagenetischen Mobilisation der Metalle aus dem Sediment-sie entsprechen jeweils einer Sedimentschicht, in der sich frühdiagenetische Vorgänge abgespielt haben.-Laminierte Zonen in den Manganknollen sind Produkte der Ausfällung der Hydroxide aus dem Meereswasser. Sie entsprechen im Sediment den Perioden ohne frühdiagenetische Mobilisierung der Metalle.Die Verhältnisse von Mangan zu Nickel, Kupfer, Zink und Magnesium sind durch alle Wachstumszonen in den Knollen konstant, unabhängig davon, in welcher Form Mangan vorliegt. Das Verhältnis von Kobalt zu Eisen ändert sich von den laminierten zu den dendritischen Zonen.Die einzige Komponente in den Knollen, die ihren Anteil bei diagenetischen Prozessen ändert, ist Wasser: die älteren Zonen enthalten weniger Wasser als die jüngeren.Mit diesen Ereignissen läßt sich das Wachstum der Manganknollen in den geologischen Ablauf einordnen. Die Geschichte der heute vorhandenen Knollen beginnt während des aus der Geologie bekannten Sedimentations-Hiatus zwischen dem frühen Miozän und dem späten Pliozän. Die Sedimentationsgeschichte von diesem Zeitpunkt bis heute spiegelt sich im Aufbau der Knollen wider.

A method for the selective separation of Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in traces from solutions of calcite (CaCO3), dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) and gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) before their determination by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) is presented. The expected interferences of Ca and Mg on intensities of trace analytes were removed by collecting the elements of interest with cobalt(III) hexamethylenedithiocar-bamate, Co(HMDTC)3. The flotation of aqueous solutions (1 l) of calcite, dolomite and gypsum was performed at pH 6.0, by 1.5 mg l−1 Co and 0.6 mmol l−1 HMDTC. To minimise the effect of the reaction between Ca/Mg, which restrains the function of the surfactant, careful selection of the most suitable foaming reagent was necessary. The accuracy of the method was established by analysing natural alkaline-earth minerals by the standard addition method as well as using the dolomite reference materials GBW 07114 and GSJ JDo-1. The ICP-AES limits of detection following flotation on different minerals were found to be 0.080 μg g−1 for Cd, 0.105 μg g−1 for Ag, 0.142 μg g−1 for Cu, 0.195 μg g−1 for Cr, 0.212 μg g−1 for Ni, 0.235 μg g−1 for Zn and 0.450 μg g−1 for Pb.  相似文献

Beljanica Mountain in eastern Serbia is a part of the Carpathian Balkan arch (northern Alpine branch). It covers an area of about 300 km2 and consists mostly of Jurassic and Cretaceous limestones. Numerous surface karst features, long caves and several large karstic springs located in Beljanica’s piedmont along the contact of karstic and non-karstic rocks are all indicators of an intense karstification. Currently, the large karstic water reserves of Beljanica Mountain are not properly utilized because of their distance from main consumers, the objection by national water managers that the springs lack a stable and sufficient discharge particularly during recession periods. Due to its unpolluted and high quality water, the area is a great prospect for future water supply, and provides an opportunity for artificial regulation and for the design and implementation of specific tapping structures. This paper includes an analysis of the created 3D ArcGIS model of karst interior and its correlation with historical and newly collected data of spring discharges and groundwater physico-chemical characteristics. The results of karst aquifer monitoring (both quantitative and qualitative) are linked with the results of extensive field geological and speleological survey of the upper non-saturated part of the karst (such as sinkholes, pits and caves) and with the investigation of the permanently saturated deeper part of the aquifer (including the diving methods). The model of karst interior is based on the data from the 69 caves, 15 sinks and 1,682 dolines (sinkholes) surveyed. The total length of the karst channels network, calculated using the GIS model and presented in a 3D environment, is 647 km. The catchment areas of five major springs that drain the areas are estimated to range from only 7 km2 (Malo Vrelo Spring) to 124 km2 (Vrelo Mlave Spring). The groundwater exploitable reserves of Beljanica karst aquifer are estimated to be over 4 m3/s. The waters are low mineralized, unpolluted and have a great potential for water supply.  相似文献

The quality of bathing water is of considerable public importance due to the possibility of fecal contamination. In 2009, Croatia implemented the new European Bathing Water Directive (BWD, 2006/7/EC) establishing stricter microbiological standards for new parameters with new reference methods. This study aims to evaluate the equivalence of different methods according to the old and revised BWD and to provide the possibility of data comparison. Furthermore, the directive requires the establishment of the bathing water profile (BWP) for pollution risk assessment. The estimation of consistency of pollution risk assessment with obtained microbiological results was also performed.  相似文献

A study of inorganic iodine speciation in the water column of a naturally eutrophicated anchialine pond (Rogoznica Lake, East Adriatic Coast) was conducted in a period between April and July 2004 to obtain information how close the inorganic iodine system is to that of inorganic nutrients during spring, when phytoplankton activity is at maximum, and how the system changes up to summer, when highly reducible redox-conditions prevail in deep water.  相似文献

The local wind bora is a well-known phenomenon on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, where steep mountains, the Dinaric Alps, closely follow the coast. In a relatively undisturbed atmosphere the coastal thermal effect and the dynamic effect of orography give rise to a cool downslope land breeze, theborino, which develops at night-time, and particularly in the winter season, when the land-sea temperature contrast is large. The causes ofcold bora, with strong and gusty winds, are then attributed to the synoptic scale effects upon the local flow intensification and inland cold air supply. Since the interaction processes on various scale motions are involved in a sequence of bora spells, it is shown how the large scale anomalies may subsequently change the mesoscale characteristics of the bora environment and eventually make the bora appear as a relatively warm wind.  相似文献

Sphene (CaTiSiO5), a calcium titanosilicate ceramic has been prepared from a powder mixture of CaCO3, TiO2 and SiO2 using vibro-milling for homogenization and activation of precursors. During the high-pressure and high-temperature synthesis (HPS) process at 4 GPa and 1,200 °C, sphene undergoes into phase transition, from room-temperature phase P21 /a to high-temperature phase A2/a. Evidence of that structural phase transition is given in this paper using infrared, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. Rietveld refinement was employed to get the structural information of the synthesized powder. The most important structural change due to phase transition, the disappearance of the characteristic out-of-center distortion of the Ti atom and moving to the center of octahedra, was confirmed. HPS is an effective method for producing full-dense ceramics without any additives. Reduction of particle size occurred during high-pressure compaction. Microstructure and particle size of both phases were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy.  相似文献
