The purpose of this study was to examine the efficiency of Advanced Space Borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data in the discrimination of geological formations and the generation of geological map in the northern margin of the Tunisian desert. The nine ASTER bands covering the visible (VIS), near-infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral regions (wavelength range of 400–2500 nm) have been treated and analyzed. As a first step of data processing, crosstalk correction, resampling, orthorectification, atmospheric correction, and radiometric normalization have been applied to the ASTER radiance data. Then, to decrease the redundancy information in highly correlated bands, the principal component analysis (PCA) has been applied on the nine ASTER bands. The results of PCA allow the validation and the rectification of the lithological boundaries already published on the geologic map, and gives a new information for identifying new lithological units corresponding to superficial formations previously undiscovered. The application of a supervised classification on the principal components image using a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm shows good correlation with the reference geologic map. The overall classification accuracy is 73 % and the kappa coefficient equals to 0.71. The processing of ASTER remote sensing data set by PCA and SVM can be employed as an effective tool for geological mapping in arid regions.  相似文献

Supervised and unsupervised satellite image classifications have progressed greatly in recent years. However, discrimination difficulties still remain among classes that directly affecting data extraction and surface mapping accuracy. The Ouargla region in southeastern Algeria is intersected by wadis, where direct communication between the shallow groundwater table and these dry, overlying ephemeral stream beds exists. Underflowing groundwater exfiltrates into low-lying aeolian blowouts or endorheic basins forming oases, chotts, and sebkhas, commonly known as saline wetlands. These wetlands are becoming increasingly vulnerable to anthropogenic stress, resulting in significant water degradation. Wetland microclimates are very important to arid regions, as they promote oasis ecosystem sustainability and preservation. High water salinity in these ecosystems, however, directly affects flourishing habitat and undermines successful desert oasis development. The objective of this work is to choose the best classification method to identify saline wetlands by comparison between the different results of land use mapping within the Ouargla basin. Landsat ETM+ (2000) satellite imagery, using visual analysis with colored compositions, has identified various forms of saline wetlands in the Ouargla region desert environment in southeast Algeria. The results show that supervised classification is validated in the identification of Saharan saline wetlands, and that support vector machine (SVM) algorithm presents the best overall accuracy.  相似文献

Mathesia darderi, a slender cylindrical monopleurid genus, formerly documented from the late Aptian-Albian of Spain, France, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt and Turkey, has been discovered in the upper Barremian and the lower Aptian of Bulgaria and Spain. Notwithstanding some morphological changes, Barremian-lower Aptian forms and those of the upper Aptian-Albian possess the same myocardinal organisation and the same microstructural attributes. The inner shell margin of the right valve displays scalloped, festooned, tubular and vermiform microstructures. The most prominent evolutionary trait of M. darderi is the increase in body size through time. A statistical analysis of size distributions show that populations of the late Barremian-early Aptian, and the late Aptian, and those of the early to middle Albian, are significantly different; a pattern which has a biostratigraphic potential. Ecological changes through time are expressed by a displacement of communities from the central/distal part, to the proximal part of carbonate platforms. M. darderi is present locally in the upper Barremian-lower Aptian, and has its major spreading over the European and Arabo-African margins of the Mediterranean Tethys during the Clansayesian-lower to middle Albian. The disappearance of the species at the Middle-Upper Albian boundary, correlates with a critical, spatial reduction of carbonate platforms.  相似文献

Offneria arabicanov. sp. (rudiste, Caprinidae) est caractérisé par la simplicité de l'architecture de la valve supérieure, bien exprimée par la forme subrectangulaire des canaux où les planchers sont relativement rares, et le faible développement des tabulae. La valve inférieure est beacoup plus complexe, ce qui traduit un taux d'evolution différencié des deux valves. L'espèce a été) trouvée dans l'Aptien inférieur (Formation Shuaiba) du Jebel Madar, dans l'avant pays des nappes des Montagnes d'Oman. Son organisation la rattache au groupe des formes arabo-africaines. A côté de ses caractères évolutifs, elle est intéressante par son potentiel biostratigraphique et paléobiologéographique.

Abstract

Offneria arabicanov. sp. (rudist, Caprinidae) is characterized by the simplicity of the upper valve, well expressed by the subrectangular shape of the canals where horizontal partitions are relatively rare, and the weak development of the tabulae. The lower valve is far more complex, which means distinctive evolutionary rates for the two valves. The species was found in the Lower Aptian (Shuaiba Formation) of the Jebel Madar, in the foreland of the Oman Mountain nappes. By its overall organisation it belongs to the Arabo-African group of species. Besides its evolutionary characters this form is interesting because of its biostratigraphic and palaeobiogeographic potential.  相似文献

Myth and geology     
I dare say many geologists may wonder why the Geological Society would be publishing a book on such a topic. Surely geology has advanced well beyond the stage of myth! But the field is now quite 'respectable' and the papers in this volume grow from a session held at the International Geological Congress in Florence in 2004. The field of geology and myth was founded virtually single handed by Dorothy Vitaliano in her Legends of the Earth (1973) and she gave the keynote address at the Florence meeting.  相似文献

In Provence and Languedoc, four drowning events were identified in platform carbonates of late Barremian–Bedoulian age. Their recognition is based on sedimentological and stratigraphical evidence, and their timing, referred to ammonite zones or subzones, is as follows:
  • (1) 
    Late Barremian, at the G. sartousianaImerites giraudi transition, or merely the lowermost part of the I. giraudi zone,
  • (2) 
    Middle Bedoulian, at the DeshayesitesweissiDeshayesites deshayesi transition,
  • (3) 
    Mid late Bedoulian in correspondence with the “Roloboceras hambrovi subzone”,
  • (4) 
    Late Bedoulian at the Deshayesites grandisDeshayesites furcata transition.
Corresponding events are also well expressed in basinal settings where they are marked by significant facies and faunal changes.These four successive drowning events distinguish four successive steps in platform development and demise. Step 1 was coeval with the onset of the Bedoulian palaeogeography and started after drowning event (1) with a drastic reduction of shallow platform settings with rudists, usually replaced by Palorbitolina facies. The ensuing recovery of rudist facies and, following drowning event (2), subsequent step 2 marked the developmental phase of the platform system, whereas steps 3 and 4, each prefaced by a drowning event, were associated with its demise. Step 1 represents the major spreading phase of the Urgonian type facies spectrum including bioclastics, coral and rudist facies groups. In Provence, step 1 was characterized by a bipolar (N-S) progradation, and aggradation was coeval with a maximum of subsidence. The termination of step 1 was marked by the emergence of the antecedent platform margin. Step 2, which followed the disappearance of rudist facies and the extreme spatial reduction of both coral and bioclastic facies, started with the flooding of the antecedent platform and the development of Palorbitolina and cherty limestones. Shallow water bioclastics and/or coral facies recovered rapidly on top of the pre-existing emerged areas and developed locally as bioclastic shoals. Step 2 documents a regional reorganisation of subsidence patterns.The infralittoral (high illuminated environments) “Urgonian facies” are therefore essentially present in the Lower Bedoulian, and circalittoral (relatively deep low illuminated environments) deposits dominate in the Upper Bedoulian. This pattern, typical for SE France and wide parts of the Helvetic shelf, departs from that of adjacent regions (e.g. SW France, Spain) where late Bedoulian platform carbonates have a significant record. The record thus shows that the demise of the Urgonian platform was a step-wise phenomenon which cannot be ascribed to a single event, i.e. the Goguel/Selli OAE1a main event.  相似文献

The relationship between heliographic longitude and the delay between flare occurrence and solar proton observation is studied using results obtained aboard HEOS A1 during 1969. The result obtained differs from previous findings.
