We examine the radial motion of a material particle in the intense radiation field of a static spherically symmetric compact object with spherical emitting surface outside the Schwarzschild radius. This paper generalizes previous work which dealt with radial motion in the Thomson limit, where the radiation force is simply proportional to the radiative flux. In the general case the average time component of the 4-momentum transferred to the particle is not negligible compared with its rest mass. Consequently, we find that the frequency dependence of the radiation force owing to Compton scattering for highly energetic photons gives rise to an increase in the effective mass of the test particle. In this work we outline the effects of this frequency dependence and compare these with the results in the Thomson limit. We present the frequency dependent saturation velocity curves for a range of stellar luminosities and radiation frequencies and present the resulting phase-space diagrams corresponding to the radial test particle trajectories. In particular, the stable equilibrium points which exist in the Thomson limit are found to be absent in the general case.  相似文献

Features of atmospheric circulation and thermal structures are discussed using the NCAR/NCEP data to reveal the reasons for the late onset and anomalous southward persistence of the South China Sea Summer Monsoon (SCSSM) in 2005. The results show that three factors are crucial. First, a strong Arabian High overlaps with a high-latitude blocking high and channels strong cold air to southern Asia. Second, the Tibetan Plateau has a bigger snow cover than usual in spring and the melting of snow cools down the surface. Third, the Somali Jet breaks out at a much later date, being not conducive to convection over Indochina. The former two factors restrict atmospheric sensible heating over the Tibetan Plateau and nearby regions while the third one limits latent heating over Indochina. All of the factors slow down atmospheric warming and postpone the onset of SCSSM. Long after the onset of SCSSM, strong cold air over India advances the Southwest Monsoon northward slowly, resulting in weaker convection and latent heating over the Tibetan Plateau and nearby areas. The negative feedback conversely inhibits further northward movement of Southwest Monsoon.  相似文献

Searches for radio pulsars are becoming increasingly difficult because of a rise in impulsive man-made terrestrial radio-frequency interference. Here, we present a new technique, zero dispersion measure filtering, which can significantly reduce the effects of such signals in pulsar search data. The technique has already been applied to a small portion of the data from the Parkes multi-beam pulsar survey, resulting in the discovery of four new pulsars, so illustrating its efficacy.  相似文献

Epidote occurs in four textural varieties in the Mount Lowe intrusion of southern California: euhedra, anhedra, intergrowths and cross-cutting veins. Of these, conspicuous elongate euhedra, which range up to 3 cm in length, meet most of the established textural criteria for magmatic epidote. Equant anhedral grains, which are ˜5 mm in diameter, are texturally ambiguous although rare allanite cores are suggestive of a magmatic origin. Epidote intergrowths with hornblende and biotite also meet certain textural criteria for crystallization from a magma, notably, euhedral faces against biotite. Finally, late-stage veins of epidote cross-cut all phases in the rock and are likely subsolidus. Oxygen isotopic compositions of these four textural varieties of epidote determined using the laser probe indicate that the use of textural criteria alone in establishing epidote parageneses can be misleading. Intracrystalline δ18O variations in the euhedra document both magmatic and subsolidus compositions. Oxygen isotope compositions are bimodal averaging 5.36 ± 0.13‰ (n = 11) and 4.66 ± 0.23‰ (n = 21). These data combined with plagioclase and zircon δ18O values are interpreted to indicate that magmatic oxygen isotopic compositions have been preserved where epidote δ18O is greater than 5‰. Significant portions of each euhedral crystal have been affected by subsolidus exchange and are characterized by epidote δ18O values less than 5‰. Intracrystalline δ18O values of epidote anhedra range from 4.50 to 6.08‰ and thus also document both magmatic and subsolidus compositions. Subsolidus exchange is volumetrically less significant in the anhedra than in the euhedra. Values of δ18O for intergrowths and late-stage cross-cutting veins of epidote average 3.81 ± 0.22‰ and document clearly subsolidus growth. The data confirm that in the Mount Lowe intrusion, large euhedra of epidote are magmatic in origin, consistent with textural evidence. The data also indicate that equant anhedra of epidote are also magmatic in origin and thus the absence of good crystal faces does not necessarily indicate subsolidus growth. The subsolidus origin of intergrowths of epidote with euhedral faces against biotite indicates that well developed crystal faces do not require growth from a magma. Finally, the subsolidus origin of the vein epidote is consistent with textural evidence. The increased resolution available with laser-based oxygen isotope measurements offers an important test for documenting whether epidote is of magmatic or subsolidus origin. Given the barometric significance of magmatic epidote, oxygen isotope compositions can be used to aid in the interpretation of epidote-bearing plutons. Extensive (ca. 50,000 km2) shallow-marine platforms (< 250 m) off northern (34°S) and southern (48°S) New Zealand, and more local areas of shelf between, are blanketed by skeletal carbonate sediments > 70% CaCO3), despite proximity to a tectonically active plate margin. In these regions the terrigenous sediment supply is presently low, and growth of epibenthos is fostered by firm substrates (rock, gravels, shells, seaweeds) and the generally energetic nature and high nutrient levels of open-shelf waters. Rapid transition into adjacent terrigenous-dominated facies is characteristic. Irrespective of water depth, the carbonates are coarse-grained and fragmental; carbonate mud is rare. Calcite dominates over aragonite. High-Mg calcite, widespread off northern New Zealand, is rare in the south. Skeletal material is dominated by bryozoans and bivalve molluscs, with significant local contributions from foraminifers, barnacles, calcareous red algae and echinoderms. The name bryomol is suggested for this distinctive temperate-region skeletal carbonate facies, which can be usefully subdivided based on dominant zoarial growth forms of the bryozoan component, known to be habitat-related. Bioerosion is an important mechanism of skeletal fragmentation and degradation. Many grains, especially aragontic bivalves, are infested by endolithic borers and have low preservation potential. Ages of skeletal material in the surficial deposits range from more than 20,000 years B.P. to modern, which is consistent with both low rates of carbonate production and sediment accumulation, and the wide range in preservation state of grains. Some data suggest that the skeletal carbonates are dispersed and mixed mainly during infrequent movement of sand ribbons, sand waves and sand sheets driven by storm-assisted tidal flows. Tracts of modern, palimpsest and relict carbonates can occur in juxtaposition.

The facies characteristics of the New Zealand shelf carbonate deposits contrast significantly with those of the classical Bahaman-type carbonate model. However, they are similar to those reported from many other mid- to high-latitude carbonate shelves, and afford good analogues for most onland occurrences of New Zealand Cenozoic limestones.  相似文献

In the present work, geological and geophysical methods were used to delineate the locations of multiple mafic intrusions at the Claytor Nature Study Center (CNSC) near Bedford, VA. An investigation of the groundwater hydrology of CNSC was launched in 2007. As a first step in that project a preliminary geological survey revealed sparse evidence of a number of diabase intrusions in the area. While diabase intrusions are not particularly permeable features, contact metamorphism of the host rock could provide conduits for groundwater due to stress fractures and joints and high-temperature recrystallization of the rock matrix. Following the geological survey, geophysical surveys including seismic refraction, ground penetrating radar, and magnetic ground measurements were conducted to determine the location and extent of these multiple igneous intrusions. Seismic and radar surveys proved to be inconclusive, but the magnetic surveys showed strong magnetic anomalies. The magnetic data were obtained using a Geometrics G-856 proton precession magnetometer and were interpreted using the Mag2dc algorithm and SGeMS geostatistical software. The results show that the intrusions are dikes that cut across nearly perpendicular to the regional metamorphic structures and trend generally north–south with a dip of approximately 75°–90° to the west. These findings are consistent with one of the general directions of stresses associated with the North Atlantic seafloor spreading in late Triassic or early Jurassic period. Subsequent hydrologic testing and groundwater modeling confirm the role of the dikes in the overall hydrogeology of the site.  相似文献

We report measurements of the oxidation state of Fe nanoparticles within lunar soils that experienced varied degrees of space weathering. We measured >100 particles from immature, submature, and mature lunar samples using electron energy‐loss spectroscopy (EELS) coupled to an aberration‐corrected transmission electron microscope. The EELS measurements show that the nanoparticles are composed of a mixture of Fe0, Fe2+, and Fe3+ oxidation states, and exhibit a trend of increasing oxidation state with higher maturity. We hypothesize that the oxidation is driven by the diffusion of O atoms to the surface of the Fe nanoparticles from the oxygen‐rich matrix that surrounds them. The oxidation state of Fe in the nanoparticles has an effect on modeled reflectance properties of lunar soil. These results are relevant to remote sensing data for the Moon and to the remote determination of relative soil maturities for various regions of the lunar surface.  相似文献

Freshwater ecosystems are warming globally from the direct effects of climate change on air temperature and hydrology and the indirect effects on near-stream vegetation. In fire-prone landscapes, vegetative change may be especially rapid and cause significant local stream temperature increases but the importance of these increases relative to broader changes associated with air temperature and hydrology are not well understood. We linked a spatially explicit landscape fire and vegetation model (FireBGCv2) to an empirical regression equation that predicted daily stream temperatures to explore how climate change and its impacts on fire might affect stream thermal conditions across a partially forested, mountainous landscape in the western U.S. We used the model to understand the roles that wildfire and management actions such as fuel reduction and fire suppression could play in mitigating stream thermal responses to climate change. Results indicate that air temperature increases associated with future climates could account for a much larger proportion of stream temperature increases (as much as 90 % at a basin scale) than wildfire. Similarly, land management scenarios that limited wildfire prevalence had negligible effects on future stream temperature increases. These patterns emerged at broader spatial scales because wildfires typically affected only a subset of a stream’s network. However, at finer spatial and temporal scales stream temperatures were sensitive to wildfire. Although wildfires will continue to cause local, short-term effects on stream temperatures, managers of aquatic systems may need to find other solutions to cope with the larger impact from climate change on future stream warming that involves adapting to the increases while developing broad strategies for riparian vegetation restoration.  相似文献

An array of carbon-hydrogen-nitrogen (CHN) compounds are formed when mixtures of ammonia and acetylene are photolyzed with ultraviolet (UV) light. Some of these compounds, formed in our investigation of pathways for HCN synthesis on Jupiter, have not been encountered previously in observational, theoretical or laboratory photochemical studies. Knowledge of these structures may facilitate the interpretation of the mass spectral data obtained by the Galileo probe as it passed through the atmosphere of Jupiter.  相似文献
