In order to obtain a better understanding of the behavior of aerosols and SO2 in the longrange transport through a marine boundary layer, a simple box-model is applied to the evaluation of the residence times of the species from the concentrations of gases and aerosols measured simulataneously on two islands in the West Pacific Ocean in the north-west monsoon. For Aitken and large particles, the residence time is varied from 3.7 to 7.4 days depending on the particle size, and their flux to the sea is equal to or slightly smaller than that of the free atmosphere. The residence time of giant particles is about one day and their flux to the sea is three times larger than that of the free atmosphere. The residence time of SO2 is 15 hr, and the relative SO2 mass flows of the deposition to the sea, of the diffusion to the free atmosphere and of the transformation to SO4 2- are approximately 4, 1 and 1, respectively.  相似文献

In this article, the authors summarize 20 years of scholarship and two field projects on geoarchaeology in Nara, Japan, carried out by researchers from 12 different institutions in 4 countries. The research goal was to test an aerial photographic reconstruction of surface landforms in the Nara Basin with subsurface data. Project A was conducted at Asawa; it tested, through geological coring, whether a suspected swampy backmarsh in the eastern basin existed and whether it would yield data on the transition to wet rice agriculture in the mid‐1st millennium B.C. Project B was conducted at Miwa; it tested, through geological coring and subsequent excavation, the nature of upland agricultural terrace formation in the southeastern basin and whether the suspected existence of a 4th‐century palace site could be confirmed. Two layers of carbonaceous clay at Asawa were dated to the Early (˜5000–3500 B.C.) and Final (˜1000‐300 B.C.) phases of the Jomon period. Pollen data revealed the establishment of an evergreen oak forest from 5,000 years ago and anthropogenic changes in forest cover from 2,000 years ago. Phytoliths from rice, millets, reeds, and bamboo were recovered in layers postdating the Final Jomon carbonaceous clay. A fault scarp with anthropogenic modification of the terraces was identified at Miwa. It was discovered that an incised stream valley had been infilled in the Medieval period at the same time surface layers were razed; the front of the terrace was extended in the premodern period. Remains were recovered from the Middle Yayoi (˜100 B.C.–A.D. 100) and the Medieval (˜A.D. 1185–1603) periods. However, as the terracing involved razing the early historic levels, no data were recovered on the alleged 4th‐century palace site. The significance of these findings lies in the identification of (a) a swampy backmarsh at Asawa, where initial agricultural efforts in growing wet rice in the basin may have occurred, confirming the aerial photographic reconstruction; and (b) hillside terracing activities at Miwa, from the Medieval period onwards, which have radically changed the configuration of the natural topography. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Modern subsurface imaging techniques allow obtaining high-quality images but with high computational costs. Nonetheless, depending on the amount of data, their execution is limited by memory in the current generation's hardware. However, with the advancement of new hardware and cloud-based solutions, these problems are mitigated but still with the risk of work loss and instability. To mitigate the execution problems in memory-limited and fail-prone environments, we propose two high-performance computing techniques. The first is based on independent checkpointing alongside a fault-tolerant framework to store an execution state and recover from that state in case of failures. Besides, for memory-limited graphics processing units, we present a technique to reduce the amount of memory requirement that we call the hybrid strategy. The experiments showed that the independent checkpointing alongside the fault-tolerant framework is able to mitigate the performance penalty of node failures, with the independent checkpointing technique being more relevant when multiple nodes are terminated. Furthermore, the hybrid strategy technique has shown the possibility of execution of larger models that could make the graphics processing unit run out of memory otherwise. Finally, our implementation is scalable, allowing a significant improvement in performance when adding new nodes. In conclusion, our techniques can be used to deliver fast, high-fidelity subsurface imaging in unstable and memory-limited environments, such as the cloud.  相似文献

Time-dependent cross-flow was studied around cylinders with circular and noncircular cross-sections. The numerical approach for the analysis was a low-order panel method based on constant source and dipole values along each panel. The method was previously used successfully for several applications, such as calculation of the added mass and damping coefficients. In simulating the viscous time-dependent flow around the cylinder, the time-dependent wake feature of the code was used. For the circular and D-cylinders, the results agreed well with the experiments. Suggestions for improving the results for T-cylinders with angle of attack are included.  相似文献

During the winters of 1981 and 1982, measurements were taken on two Japanese islands of the aerosol and gaseous species which had been carried by northwesterly monsoons over the Pacific Ocean. The aerosols were characterized as sea-salt particles; soil particles, and as particles of sulfate, nitrate, organics and elemental carbon. At Chichi-jima island, which is about 800 km away from the main islands of Japan, it was found that the level of the anthropogenic components of the aerosols was considerably higher than their background level. The mean concentrations of the species on the islands are given in tabular forms. According to a survey made on board a ferry boat, the aerosol and gaseous species were fairly uniformly distributed along the southern coast of the main Japanese islands.  相似文献

 Magnetic measurement of Fe3− x Si x O4 spinel solid solutions indicates that their Curie temperatures decrease gradually, but not linearly, from 851 to 12 K with increasing content of nonmagnetic ions Si4+. Magnetic hysteresis becomes more noticeable in solid solutions having a larger content of Fe2SiO4. Saturation magnetizations of Fe3− x Si x O4 samples increase up to x=0.357 and they are easily saturated in the field of H=0.1 T. However, magnetization of the sample of x=0.794 does not approach saturation even at high field of H=7.0 T and has a large coercive force. The Si4+ disordered distribution is confirmed to be tetr[Fe3+ 1− x + x t Si4+ x (1− t )] octa[Fe2+ 1+ x Fe3+ 1− x x t Si4+ x t ] O4 by the spin moment, which is consistent with site occupancy obtained from X-ray crystal structure refinement. Their molecular magnetizations would be expressed as M B={4(1+x)+10xtB as functions of composition parameter x and Si4+ ordering parameter t of the solid solution. The sample of x=0.794 is antiferromagnetic below the Néel temperature, mainly due to the octahedral cation interaction M OM O, while both M TM O and M OM O interactions induce a ferrimagnetic property. Concerning magnetic spin configuration, in the case of x>0.42, the lowest dɛ level becomes a singlet, resulting in no orbital angular momentum.
