Configurational changes with temperature are important for the thermodynamic and transport properties of most aluminosilicate melts, but in general are not well understood. Here, we present high-resolution 27Al and 17O NMR data on several calcium aluminosilicate glasses prepared with varying quench rates and thus with fictive temperatures that span ranges up to about 200 K. In all compositions the content of five-coordinated aluminum increases with fictive temperature, in agreement with recent high temperature NMR data on melts. In a glass of CaAl2Si2O8 (“anorthite”) composition, the content of non-bridging oxygens also increases with temperature; however this effect was not observed in a sample with a much higher CaO/Al2O3 ratio. We present a consistent notation for reactions among structural species in these systems that clarify why in some cases, high-coordinated network cations may appear on the same side of the reaction, while in others they occur on the opposite sides: the key difference is in accounting for all coordination changes for oxygens. Mixing of non-bridging oxygens and of high-coordinated aluminum make significant contributions to the overall configurational entropy and heat capacity of the melts, as does the mixing of various bridging oxygens and of tetrahedral network cations. Other, less well known, types of increase in disorder with temperature may be important as well.  相似文献

A photographic analysis was conducted at five shallow reef sites (5-6 m) at Eilat (northern Red Sea) to study changes in live coral cover during a 2-year period. Logit regression analysis showed that levels of total oxidized nitrogen (TON; NO(2)+NO(3)) and the presence of SCUBA divers were significant explicative variables of coral partial mortality, while sedimentation rate was not significant. Sites exposed to mean TON levels above 0.4 microM TON showed significantly lower live stony coral cover and abundance per m(2), and higher partial mortality of coral colonies than sites exposed to lower TON. These findings may be useful in establishing limits for TON levels at Eilat, but must be interpreted with caution due to the complexity of nutrient dynamics in coral reefs, the uncertainty of the effects of nutrients on coral physiological processes, and the possibility of interactions among multiple coral stressors.  相似文献

Relationships between mineral/silicate melt partition coefficients and melt structure have been examined by combining Ca and Mn olivine/melt partitioning data with available melt structure information. Compositions were chosen so that melts with olivine on their liquidii range in degree of polymerization, NBO/T, from ∼0.5 to ∼2.5 under near isothermal conditions (1350-1400°C). Olivine/melt Ca-Mn exchange coefficients, Ca(olivine)/CaO(melt)/MnO(olivine)/MnO(melt) (KD Ca-Mnolivine/melt), as a function of melt NBO/T have a parabolic shape with a minimum KD Ca-Mnolivine/melt-value at NBO/T near 1. Notably, published KD Fe2+-Mgolivine/melt versus NBO/T functions are also parabolic with a maximum in KD Fe2+-Mgolivine/melt near 1 (Kushiro and Mysen, 2002).The olivine/melt partitioning data are modeled in terms of structural units (Qn-species) in the melt. The NBO/T-value corresponding to the minimum KD Ca-Mnolivine/melt is near that where the abundance ratio of Qn-species, XQ3/XQ2, has its largest value. Therefore, the activity coefficient ratio in the melt, γCa2+(melt)/γMn2+(melt), attains a minimum where the abundance ratio of XQ3/XQ2 is at maximum. It is inferred from this relationship that Ca2+ in the melts is dominantly bonded to nonbridging oxygen (Ca-NBO) in Q3-species, whereas Mn2+ is bonded to nonbridging oxygen (Mn-NBO) in less polymerized Qn-species such as Q2.  相似文献

On the red coloration of saltern crystallizer ponds   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
To assess, respectively, the contribution of red bacteria of theHalobacterium-Haloferax-Haloarcula group and of the β-carotene-rich green algaDunaliella salina to the red colour of saltern crystallizer ponds, we studied the optical properties of the brines of NaCl-saturated saltern ponds in Eilat, Israel, and quantified the pigments present in their biota. The absorption spectrum of the brines, as measured using the opal glass method to reduce the interference by scattering, or using an integrating sphere, nearly corresponded to thein vivo absorption spectrum of bacterioruberin-containing red archaeobacteria. However, extracts of the microbial community in organic solvents were dominated by β-carotene, a pigment occurring in high concentrations in theDunaliella cells present, and bacterioruberin contributed only between 13 and 28 per cent of the total visible light absorption by the extracts. The apparent discrepancy between these results can be explained by the very small in vivo optical cross-section of β-carotene, which is densely packed in globules inside theD. salina cells.  相似文献

In a previous paper we attempted to assess the contribution of red bacteria of theHalobacterium — Haloferax — Haloarcula group and of the -carotene-rich green algaDunaliella salina to the red colour of saltern crystallizer ponds. By means of light absorption measurements, we showed that bacterioruberin contained in the bacteria was mainly responsible for the colour of the brines, in spite of the fact that -carotene derived fromDunaliella was the pigment present in the greatest amount. This apparent discrepancy was explained by the very smallin vivo optical cross-section of -carotene, which is densely packed in globules inside theD. salina cells. We recently observed that the centrifugation technique used in the previous study to collect biomass from the ponds was unsuitable for this type of measurements, as a substantial part of theDunaliella cells present did not sediment upon centrifugation due to the low specific gravity caused by the high -carotene content. Therefore similar measurements were performed with biomass collected by filtration. Again,in vivo absorption spectra were dominated by the absorption peaks of bacterioruberin. The results reported here show that, in spite of the methodological problem associated with the earlier study, all views and conclusions expressed in our earlier paper retain their validity.  相似文献
