The Proterozoic (950 Ma) Lyngdal granodiorite of southern Norwaybelongs to a series of hornblende–biotite metaluminousferroan granitoids (HBG suite) coeval with the post-collisionalRogaland Anorthosite–Mangerite–Charnockite (AMC)suite. This granitoid massif shares many geochemical characteristicswith rapakivi granitoids, yet granodiorites dominate over granites. To constrain both crystallization (P, T, fO2, H2O in melt) andmagma generation conditions, we performed crystallization experimentson two samples of the Lyngdal granodiorite (with 60 and 65 wt% SiO2) at 4–2 kbar, mainly at fO2 of NNO (nickel–nickeloxide) to NNO + 1, and under fluid-saturated conditions withvarious H2O–CO2 ratios for each temperature. Comparisonbetween experimental phase equilibria and the mineral assemblagein the Lyngdal granodiorite indicates that it crystallized between4 and 2 kbar, from a magma with 5–6 wt % H2O at an fO2of NNO to NNO + 1. These oxidized and wet conditions sharplycontrast with the dry and reduced conditions inferred for thepetrogenesis of the AMC suite and many other rapakivi granitesworldwide. The high liquidus temperature and H2O content ofthe Lyngdal granodiorite imply that it is not a primary magmaproduced by the partial melting of the crust but is derivedby the fractionation of a mafic magma. Lyngdal-type magmas appearto have volcanic equivalents in the geological record. In particular, our results show that oxidized high-silica rhyolites, such asthe Bishop Tuff, could be derived via fractionation of oxidizedintermediate magmas and do not necessarily represent primarycrustal melts. This study underlines the great variability ofcrystallization conditions (from anhydrous to hydrous and reducedto oxidized) and petrogenetic processes among the metaluminousferroan magmas of intermediate compositions (granodiorites, quartz mangerites, quartz latites), suggesting that there isnot a single model to explain these rocks. The Petit-Rhône Fan Valley (north-western Mediterranean) is a broad, sinuous, filled valley that is deeply incised by a narrow, sinuous thalweg. The valley fill is differentiated into three seismic subunits on high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles. The lower chaotic subunit probably consists of channel lag deposits that seem to be in lateral continuity with high-amplitude reflections representing levee facies. The intermediate transparent subunit, which has an erosional base and clearly truncates levee deposits, is interpreted to be mass-flow deposits resulting from the disintegration of the fan-valley flanks. The upper bedded subunit shows an overall lens-shaped geometry and the seismic reflections onlap either onto the top of the underlying transparent subunit or onto the Rhône levees. Piston core data show that the upper few meters of this upper subunit consist of thin turbidites, probably deposited by overflow processes. The few available 14C ages suggest that the upper stratified subunit filled the Petit-Rhône Fan Valley between 21 and 11 kyr BP. The upper bedded subunit is deposited within the Petit-Rhône Fan Valley downslope of a major decrease in slope gradient. This upper subunit and the thalweg are genetically related and represent a small channel/levee system confined within the fan valley. Previous studies interpreted this thalweg to be an erosional feature resulting from a recent avulsion of the major channel course. Our interpretation implies that the thalweg is not a purely erosional feature but a depositional/erosional channel. This small channel/levee system is superimposed on a large muddy channel/levee system after the sediment supply changed from thick muddy flows during the main phase of aggradation of the Rhône Fan levees, to thin, mixed (sand and mud) flows at the end of Isotope Stage 2 (~16–18 ka BP). The pre-existing morphology of the Petit-Rhône Fan Valley played a determinant role in the sediment dispersal leading to the creation of this small and confined channel/levee system. These mixed flows have undergone flow stripping resulting from the changes in the slope gradient along the thalweg course. The finer sediment overflowed from the thalweg and were deposited in the Petit-Rhône Fan Valley. Coarser channelled sediment remaining in the thalweg were deposited as a ‘sandy’lobe (Neofan). As indicated by 14C dating, sedimentation on this lobe continued until very recently, suggesting a further evolution of the turbidity flows from small mixed flows to small sandy flows. the deposition of this study lobe and the sedimentary fill of the Petit-Rhône Fan Valley may be related to widespread shelf edge and canyon wall failures with a resulting downslope evolution of failed sediment into turbidity currents.  相似文献

The Solubility of Sulphur in Hydrous Rhyolitic Melts   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Experiments performed at 2 kbar, in the temperature range 800–1000°C,with fO2 between NNO–2·3 and NNO+2·9 (whereNNO is the nickel–nickel oxide buffer), and varying amountsof sulphur added to hydrous metaluminous rhyolite bulk compositions, were used to constrain the solubility of sulphur in rhyolitemelts. The results show that fS2 exerts a dominant control onthe sulphur solubility in hydrous silicate melts and that, dependingon fO2, a rhyolitic melt can reach sulphur contents close to1000 ppm at high fS2. At fO2 below NNO+1, the addition of ironto a sulphur-bearing rhyolite magma produces massive crystallizationof pyrrhotite and does not enhance the sulphur solubility ofthe melt. For a given fO2, the melt-sulphur-content increaseswith fS2. For fixed fO2 and fS2, temperature exerts a positivecontrol on sulphur solubilities, at least for fO2 below NNO+1.The mole fraction of dissolved sulphur exhibits essentiallylinear dependence on fH2S at low fO2 and, although the experimentalevidence is less clear, on fSO2 at high fO2. The minimum insulphur solubility corresponds to the redox range where bothfH2S and fSO2 are approximately equal. A thermodynamic modelof sulphur solubility in hydrous rhyolite melts is derived assumingthat total dissolved sulphur results from the additive effectsof H2S and SO2 dissolution reactions. The model reproduces wellthe minimum of sulphur solubility at around NNO+1, in additionto the variation of the sulphide to sulphate ratio with fO2.A simple empirical model of sulphur solubility in rhyoliticmelts is derived, and shows good correspondence between modeland observations for high-silica rhyolites. The Menderes Massif and the overlying Lycian Nappes occupy anextensive area of SW Turkey where high-pressure–low-temperaturemetamorphic rocks occur. Precise retrograde PT pathsreflecting the tectonic mechanisms responsible for the exhumationof these high-pressure–low-temperature rocks can be constrainedwith multi-equilibrium PT estimates relying on localequilibria. Whereas a simple isothermal decompression is documentedfor the exhumation of high-pressure parageneses from the southernMenderes Massif, various PT paths are observed in theoverlying Karaova Formation of the Lycian Nappes. In the uppermostlevels of this unit, far from the contact with the MenderesMassif, all PT estimates depict cooling decompressionpaths. These high-pressure cooling paths are associated withtop-to-the-NNE movements related to the Akçakaya shearzone, located at the top of the Karaova Formation. This zoneof strain localization is a local intra-nappe contact that wasactive in the early stages of exhumation of the high-pressurerocks. In contrast, at the base of the Karaova Formation, alongthe contact with the Menderes Massif, PT calculationsshow decompressional heating exhumation paths. These paths areassociated with severe deformation characterized by top-to-the-eastshearing related to a major shear zone (the Gerit shear zone)that reflects late exhumation of high-pressure parageneses underwarmer conditions. Sandy lobe deposits on submarine fans are sensitive recorders of the types of sediment gravity flows supplied to a basin and are economically important as hydrocarbon reservoirs. This study investigates the causes of variability in 20 lobes in small late Pleistocene submarine fans off East Corsica. These lobes were imaged using ultra‐high resolution boomer seismic profiles (<1 m vertical resolution) and sediment type was ground truthed using piston cores published in previous studies. Repeated crossings of the same depositional bodies were used to measure spatial changes in their dimensions and architecture. Most lobes increase abruptly down‐slope to a peak thickness of 8 to 42 m, beyond which they show a progressive, typically more gradual, decrease in thickness until they thin to below seismic resolution or pass into draping facies of the basin plain. Lobe areas range from 3 to 70 km2 and total lengths from 2 to 14 km, with the locus of maximum sediment accumulation from 3 to 28 km from the shelf‐break. Based on their location, dimensions, internal architecture and nature of the feeder channel, the lobes are divided into two end‐member types. The first are small depositional bodies located in proximal settings, clustered near the toe‐of‐slope and fed by slope gullies or erosive channels lacking or with poorly developed levées (referred to as ‘proximal isolated lobes’). The second are larger architecturally more complex depositional bodies deposited in more distal settings, outboard more stable and longer‐lived levéed fan valleys (referred to as ‘composite mid‐fan lobes’). Hybrid lobe types are also observed. At least three hierarchical levels of compensation stacking are recognized. Individual beds and bed‐sets stack to form lobe‐elements; lobe‐elements stack to form composite lobes; and composite lobes stack to form lobe complexes. Differences in the size, shape and architectural complexity of lobe deposits reflect several inter‐related factors including: (i) flow properties (volume, duration, grain‐size, concentration and velocity); (ii) the number and frequency of flows, and their degree of variation through time; (iii) gradient change and sea floor morphology at the mouth of the feeder conduit; (iv) lobe lifespan prior to avulsion or abandonment; and (v) feeder channel geometry and stability. In general, lobes outboard stable fan valleys that are connected to shelf‐incised canyons are wider, longer and thicker, accumulate in more basinal locations and are architecturally more complex.  相似文献

Experimental Crystallization of Leucogranite Magmas   总被引:25,自引:8,他引:17
Both crystallization and melting experiments have been carriedout on two natural, biotite-muscovite (DK) and tourmaline-muscovite(GB) High Himalayan leucogranites (HHL) at 4 kbar, logfO2 =FMQ–05, aH2O = 1–0•03, and at five temperaturesbetween 803 and 663C H2O contents of the quenched glasses wereanalysed by ion microprobe. Plagioclase and biotite are theliquidus phases for reduced melt H2O contents and H2O-rich conditions, respectively. H2O saturation limits range from 8 to 10 wt%.DK has a wider crystallization interval than GB (150 vs 80Cfor conditions close to H2O saturation), and a slightly higherH2O-saturated solidus (645 compared with 630C for GB). Tourmalinenever crystallized spontaneously from the melt. Tourmaline seedsalways reacted out to biotite in the biotite-muscovite sample, whereas they remained stable in the tourmaline-muscovite sample.Biotite is replaced by hercynite as the main ferromagnesianphase at high temperature and reduced aH2O. Muscovite crystallizationis restricted to near-solidus conditions. The compositions ofplagioclase, alkali feldspar, biotite and muscovite are givenas a function of bulk composition, temperature and aH2O. Glasscompositions are richer in normative quartz than the 4 kbarH2O-saturated Qz–Ab–Or eutectic, and become moreperaluminous and less mafic with increasing fractionation. Biotitecrystallization in peraluminous liquids is favoured by elevatedFe, Mg and Ti contents. Muscovite crystallization is not promotedunder H2O-saturated conditions. Tourmaline stability is stronglydependent on aH2O. For GB, tourmaline is present at elevatedtemperatures for intermediate values of aH2O (803 C, 0–7),but not above 650C for H2O-saturated conditions. Comparisonof the natural crystallization sequence with experiments suggestsinitial water contents between 5 and 75 wt % for the DK magma, and > 7 wt% for the GB magma. Plagioclase core compositionsgive minimum temperatures of 700C for GB and 750C for DK,consistent with an emplacement of these HHL as almost entirelyliquid bodies. The restricted occurrence of biotite in the GBgranite suggests that it reacted out during the magmatic evolution, owing to a marked change in fO2 toward more oxidizing conditions.Tourmaline leucogranites can be generated from biotite leucogranitesby fractional crystallization under conditions of increasingdegree of oxidation. High-resolution seismic boomer profiles, with a vertical resolution of less than 1 m, together with piston cores and previous side-scan sonar data, are used to describe late Quaternary sedimentation on the Var deep-sea fan. Chronological control is provided by foram biostratigraphy and radiocarbon dating in cores, and is extended over the fan by seismic correlation. Regional erosional events correspond to the oxygen isotopic stage 2 and 6 glacial maxima. Cores and seismic data define a widespread surface sand layer that is correlated with prodelta failure in 1979 and subsequent submarine cable breaks. Numerical modelling constrains the character of this 1979 turbidity current. It originated from a relatively small slide on the upper prodelta that put sufficient material in suspension to form an accelerating turbidity current which eroded sand from the Var Canyon. The turbidity current was only 30 m thick on the Upper Valley, but experienced significant flow expansion in the Middle Valley to thicknesses of more than 120 m, where it spilled over the eastern Var Sedimentary Ridge at a velocity of about 2·5 m s?1. Other Holocene turbidity currents (with a recurrence interval of 1000 years) were somewhat muddier and thicker, but also deposited sand on the levees of the Middle Valley, and are inferred to have had a similar slide-related origin. Late Pleistocene turbidity currents deposited thick mud beds on the Var Sedimentary Ridge. The presence of sediment waves and the mean cross-flow slope inferred from levee asymmetry indicates that some of these flows were many hundreds of metres thick and flowed at velocities of about 0·35 m s?1. This contrast with Holocene turbidites suggests that a slide origin is unlikely. Estimated times for deposition of thick mud beds on the levees are many days to weeks. The Late Pleistocene flows may therefore result from hyperpycnal flow of glacial outwash in the Var River. The variation in the Late Pleistocene to Holocene turbidite sedimentation is controlled more by variations in sediment supply than by sea-level change.  相似文献

Experimental Constraints on the Origin of the 1991 Pinatubo Dacite   总被引:12,自引:2,他引:12
Crystallization (dacite) and interaction (dacite–peridotite)experiments have been performed on the 1991 Pinatubo dacite(Luzon Island, Philippines) to constrain its petrogenesis. Inthe dacite–H2O system at 960 MPa, magnetite and eitherclinopyroxene (low H2O) or amphibole (high H2O) are the liquidusphases. No garnet is observed at this pressure. Dacite–peridotite interaction at 920 MPa produces massive orthopyroxenecrystallization, in addition to amphibole ± phlogopite.Amphibole crystallizing in dacite at 960 MPa has the same compositionas the aluminium-rich hornblende preserved in the cores of amphibolephenocrysts in the 1991 dacite, suggesting a high-pressure stageof dacite crystallization with high melt H2O contents (>10wt %) at relatively low temperature (<950°C). The compositionsof plagioclase, amphibole and melt inclusion suggest that thePinatubo dacite was water-rich, oxidized and not much hotterthan 900°C, when emplaced into the shallow magma reservoirin which most phenocrysts precipitated before the onset of the1991 eruption. The LREE-enriched REE pattern of the whole-rockdacite demands garnet somewhere during its petrogenesis, whichin turn suggests high-pressure derivation. Partial melting ofsubducted oceanic crust yields melts unlike the Pinatubo dacite.Interaction of these slab melts with sub-arc peridotite is unableto produce a Pinatubo type of dacite, nor is a direct mantleorigin conceivable on the basis of our peridotite–daciteinteraction experimental results. Dehydration melting of underplatedbasalts requires unrealistically high temperatures and doesnot yield dacite with the low FeO/MgO, and high H2O, Ni andCr contents typical of the Pinatubo dacite. The most plausibleorigin of the Pinatubo dacite is via high-pressure fractionationof a hydrous, oxidized, primitive basalt that crystallized amphiboleand garnet upon cooling. Dacite melts produced in this way weredirectly expelled from the uppermost mantle or lower crust toshallow-level reservoirs from which they erupted occasionally.Magmas such as the Pinatubo dacite may provide evidence forthe existence of particularly H2O-rich conditions in the sub-arcmantle wedge rather than the melting of the young, hot subductingoceanic plate.
