This study is based on the detailed geometry of the Hokkaido Wadati-Benioff zone and the paleosubduction zone as delineated by Hanus and Vanek (1984). The used data includes 217 CMT Harvard solutions for earthquakes, which belong to the Wadati-Benioff zone and 13 for the paleosubduction zone. The inverse technique by Gephart and Forsyth (1984) was incorporated for determining the best fit principal stress directions σ1, σ2, σ3 and the ratio (R2−σ13−σ1) for 20 km depth intervals in the Wadati-Benioff zone and for the paleosubduction zone considered as a single body. In almost all the considered depth layers, the maximum compressive stress σ1 is normal to the strike of the slab and dips less than 25°, indicating the NW-SE convergence between the Pacific and Eurasian lithospheric plates. Exceptions are in the depth layer 81–120 km, the paleosubduction zone with steeply dipping along-strike σ1, and the lower part of the subduction zone (161–220 km) where σ1 is almost horizontal and of E trend. The minimum compressive stress σ3 is mostly along-strike and of a different dip with the exception of the 21–60 km layer wher they are down-dipping. The results obtained for the depth ranges 0–20 km, 81–100 km, 121–160 km, and the paleosubduction zone indicate heterogeneous stress fields. These results show that the slab pull and the mantle resistance, acting on the slab edge, are not the main forces which control the contemporary plate tectonics in the Hokkaido region. Along-strike compression at depths 81–120 km and along-strike extension at 0–20 and 61–220 km are involved in the slab dynamics. These can be related to horizontal bending of the subducting Pacific plate.  相似文献

Summary The seismicity depth pattern, seismic energy and b-value depth variation in the Hellenic Wadati-Benioff zone and the overlying continental plate in the Aegean region for the period 1901–1982 are studied separately on the basis of a recent seismotectonic model [1]. The results obtained show that the W and E flanks of the Hellenic Wadati-Benioff zone, as well as the E and W parts of the overlying continental plate, have similar tendencies in the depth distributions of seismic activity and different tendencies in the depth distributions of seismic energy and b-value. The different depth distributions of the considered seismogenic characteristics are supposed to be due to different depth distributions of heterogeneity of material, stress and rheology of material of the western and eastern parts of the sinking and overlying lithospheric plates.  相似文献

Summary A short review of simple theoretical models for extended earthquake sources visualized as single and multiple dislocations is presented. Formulas for the duration of the radiation t i s from the starting point of the destruction up to the region forming the amplitude maxima of body waves are given. A method for determining some basic parameters of extended earthquake sources (length and depth of the dislocation, azimuth of the first dislocation and the angles between every two consecutive dislocations) from the seismogram data for ti s is presented. The procedure is applied to yield some practical results.  相似文献

The Aegean region: deep structures and seismological properties   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
3-D P -wave velocity anomaly patterns, the geometry of the Hellenic Wadati-Benioff zone and of the seismically active fracture zones in the overlying continental wedge, and the depth distribution of seismogenic properties (seismic activity, energy and b value) for the Aegean region are examined in this study. The western and eastern parts of the area studied differ significantly in terms of the depth distribution of the considered seismological parameters and the velocity structures. The results indicate different physical conditions in the western and eastern parts of the region in question. Data for the surface heat flow and the evolution of the volcanism in the Aegean region since the early Eocene are employed to interpret the results of the present study. Possible geodynamic processes at the plate boundaries between Africa and Eurasia are discussed.  相似文献

-- The study addresses the evaluation of earthquake hazard parameters such as maximum regional magnitude (Mmax) and the slope of Gutenberg-Richter law # (where b=# log e) for the Hellenic Wadati-Benioff zone and the overriding lithospheric plate in the area of Crete and its surroundings. The seismicity of the area is divided in a cellular (1.0° 2 1.0°) manner allowing analysis of the localized earthquake hazard parameters and graphical representation of their spatial variation. Our approach incorporates the recently updated earthquake catalogue for Greece and the adjacent areas, the consideration of the morphology of the deep seismically active structures in the studied area and use of a probabilistic procedure for estimating the earthquake hazard parameters.¶One of the main inconsistencies in the earthquake hazard assessment is the estimation of the maximum magnitude and the related uncertaint y. The Bayesian approach, applied in the present, is a straightforward technique for evaluating the earthquake hazard parameters and is based on the following assumptions: Poissonian character of seismic events flow, a frequency-magnitude law of Gutenberg-Richter's type with cutoff maximal value for estimated parameter and a seismic catalogue, having a rather sizeable number of events (i.e., 50 events at least per cell). For five cells in which the number of events is less than 50, an effort is made to produce synthetic data. The re-assessed parameters obtained from the synthetic data show no significant difference and the real data (of the five cells) are finally taken into account although the estimated uncertainty is high.¶For four random cells we constructed hazard curves showing the probabilities that a certain magnitude M will be exceeded in one year and the return periods (in years) that are expected for a given magnitude. These are particularly useful for the mapping of earthquake hazard in regions of either low or high seismic activity, as is Crete and the adjacent area.¶The obtained results show that the W and E parts of both subducting and overriding plates differ in the spatial distribution of all the estimated earthquake hazard parameters. The Mmax distribution indicates strong coupling between the western portions of the interacting plates (Mmax > 6.3) to the south of 36°N. The smaller values of Mmax (Mmax < 6.3) estimated in the SE part of the studied area indicate weak coupling between the eastern portions of the subducting and overriding plates.¶Values of b > 1.0 are found to the south and east of Crete for the Wadati-Benioff zone, and over the central part of the island and the area to the northeast of it (cell 11) for the continental wedge, which suggests nonuniform stress field and/or heterogeneous material.  相似文献

The study addresses the space distribution of the stress field in the Kyushu–Ryukyu Wadati–Benioff zone based on homogeneous data of earthquake focal mechanisms and the inverse technique by Gephart and Forsyth [J. Geophys. Res. 89 (1984) 9305]. The used data set consists of 148 Harvard CMT solutions and 22 earthquake focal mechanisms listed in previous studies. The stress field parameters are determined for 0–40, 41–100 and h>100 km depth ranges. The top 100-km layer of the Wadati–Benioff zone (WBZ) is characterized by strike normal maximum compression σ1 and steeper than the slab minimum compression σ3, the last indicating for unbalanced slab pull force. The Tokara channel ‘divides’ the subduction into two parts of different stress regime at depth greater than 100 km. To the south of the channel the slab is under slab parallel σ1 and slab normal σ3 while its northern part, beneath Kyushu, is under slab parallel extension and slab normal compression. The results of recent studies on the regional velocity structure and geochemistry of the volcanic lava indicate that the most plausible reason for the observed stress field difference below 100 km in the northern and rest part of the arc is the presence of hot low viscosity upper mantle west of Kyushu. The results of this study indicate that the forces involved in the contemporary subduction dynamics in the Ryukyu–Kyushu Wadati–Benioff zone are related to the convergence between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian plate, the trench suction force, slab pull, the slab anchor force and, in the southern-central part of the arc, mantle resistance.  相似文献

Summary The statistics of the vertical distribution of earthquake foci belonging to the Wadati-Benioff zone in the Hellenic arc show that the seismic activity, in terms of the total number of events at a given depth range during the period 1901–82, and b value of the frequency-magnitude relation vary with depth in a specific manner. The seismic activity of the western and eastern flanks of the Wadati-Benioff zone varies with depth in a similar way, whereas the b-value depth variation for these two flanks of the subduction zone does not show such a similarity.  相似文献
