The Darb el-Arbain study area is in the southern Western Desert of Egypt and has been attracting increasing developmental interest in the last few decades, especially since agricultural development of the southern Baris area, where the groundwater resources of the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System (NSAS) have been utilized for the cultivation of valuable lands. Due to the proven high potential of both groundwater and land resources, determining the priority areas for sustainable hydrogeological development becomes a necessity. A geographic information system, as a platform for geospatial modeling techniques, has been built, which depends on the recently collected data about the NSAS, in addition to the published databases. Certain criteria of practical value, like depth to groundwater, hydraulic conductivity, groundwater salinity, sodium adsorption ratio, and the safe yield of wells, were selected as decisive parameters for hydrogeological prioritization. The model pinpoints areas characterized by favorable hydrogeological conditions, which could be used for future development and implementation of an artificial storage and recovery (ASR) program. The designated priority areas for hydrogeological development occur at the southern, middle southern and some localized northern parts of the Darb el-Arbain area. The newly formed Tushka Lakes represent a suitable and excellent natural source of freshwater for implementing an ASR program.  相似文献

Abstract: The hydrothermal alteration patterns associating with the gold prospect hosted by metavolcanics in the Dungash area, Eastern Desert of Egypt, were investigated in order to assign their relationship to mineralization. The metavolcanics of andesitic composition are generated by regional metamorphism of greenschist facies superimposed by hydrothermal activity. Epidote and chlorite are metamorphic minerals, whereas sericite, carbonates, and chlorite are hydrothermal alteration minerals. The auriferous quartz vein is of NEE‐SWW trend and cuts mainly the andesitic metavolcanics, but sometimes extends to the neighbouring metapyroclastics and metasediments. Quartz‐sericite, sericite, carbonate‐sericite, and chlorite‐sericite constitute four distinctive alteration zones which extend outwards from the mineralized quartz vein. The quartz‐sericite and sericite zones are characterized by high contents of SiO2, K2O, Rb, and As, the carbonate‐sericite zone is by high contents of CaO, Au, Cu, Cr, Ni, and Y, and the chlorite‐sericite zone is by high contents of MgO, Na2O, Zn, Ba, and Co. Gold and sulphide minerals are relatively more abundant in the carbonate‐sericite zone followed by the sericite one. The geochemistry of the alteration system was investigated using volume‐composition and mass balance calculations. The volume factors obtained for the different alteration zones, mentioned above (being 1.64, 1.19, 1.17, and 1.07, respectively), indicate that replacement had taken place with a volume gain. The mass balance calculations revealed addition of SiO2, K2O, As, Cu, Rb, Ba, Ni, and Y to the system as a whole and subtraction of Fe2O3 from the system. Initial high aK+ and aH+ for the invading fluids is suggested. As the fluids migrated into wallrocks, they became more concentrated in Mg, Ca, and Na with increasing activities of CO2 and S. The calculated loss‐gain data are in agreement with the microscopic observations. Breakdown of ferromagnesian minerals and feldspars in the quartz‐sericite, sericite, and chlorite‐sericite zones accompanied by loss in Mg, Fe, Ca, and Na under acidic conditions and low CO2/H2O ratio may obstruct the formation of carbonates and sulphides, and the precipitation of gold in these zones. The role of metamorphic fluids in the area is expected to be restricted to the liberation of Au and some associated elements from their hosts.  相似文献

Observations from the 12 October 1992 Dahshour earthquake in Egypt   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An earthquake of local magnitude 5.3 (duration magnitudeM d ) on the Richter Scale occurred at Dahshour, 18 km south of Cairo, Egypt, on Monday, 12 October 1992 at 3:09 pm (local time). Numerous aftershocks followed the main event during the following weeks with magnitude up to 4.3. The earthquake occurred in an area that has had no recent seismic activity, and affected many cities in Egypt. Many buildings and monuments were severely damaged or collapsed. Modern concrete skeletal structures suffered minor nonstructural damage. Earthquake physical damage was estimated at about one billion U.S. Dollars. The severity of the damage was mainly due to poor construction materials and detailing, aging, inferior workmanship, and inadequate maintenance. Egypt was generally considered to be an area of moderate seismic activity. In 1989, earthquake provisions were first introduced in the Egyptian Code of Practice for Reinforced Concrete Structures only. The earthquake clearly showed the urgent need for an assessment and rehabilitation program to mitigate seismic risk hazard in existing structures. In addition, future development planning, and earthquake preparedness strategies should implement lessons learned from the event. In this paper, an overview discussion about the observations from the 12 October earthquake is presented.  相似文献

Systematic planning for groundwater exploration using modern techniques is essential for the proper utilization, protection and management of this vital resource. Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) images, a geographic information system (GIS), a watershed modeling system (WMS) and weighted spatial probability modeling (WSPM) were integrated to identify the groundwater potential areas in the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. Eight pertinent thematic layers were built in a GIS and assigned appropriate rankings. Layers considered were: rainfall, net groundwater recharge, lithology or infiltration, lineament density, slope, drainage density, depth to groundwater, and water quality. All these themes were assigned weights according to their relative importance to groundwater potentiality and their corresponding normalized weights were obtained based on their effectiveness factors. The groundwater potentiality map was finally produced by WSPM. This map comprises five gradational groundwater potentiality classes ranging from very high to very low. The validity of this unbiased GIS-based model was tested by correlating its results with the published hydrogeological map of Egypt and the actual borehole yields, where a concordant justification was reached. The map declared that the Sinai Peninsula is generally of moderate groundwater potentiality, where this class encompasses an area of 33,120?km2 which represents 52% of its total area.  相似文献

The area of study lies at the northeastern part of Nile Delta. Global shoreline regression and sea-level rise have their own-bearing on the groundwater salinization due to seawater intrusion. A new adopted approach for vulnerability mapping using the hydrochemical investigations, geographic information system and a weighted multi-criteria decision support system (WMCDSS) was developed to determine the trend of groundwater contamination by seawater intrusion. Six thematic layers were digitally integrated and assigned different weights and rates. These have been created to comprise the most decisive criteria used for the delineation of groundwater degradation due to seawater intrusion. These criteria are represented by the total dissolved solids, well discharge, sodium adsorption ratio, hydrochemical parameter (Cl/HCO3), hydraulic conductivity and water types. The WMCDSS modeling was tried, where a groundwater vulnerability map with four classes ranging from very low to high vulnerability was gained. The map pinpointed the promising localities for groundwater protection, which are almost represented by the very low or low vulnerability areas (53.69 % of the total study area). The regions having high and moderate groundwater vulnerability occupy 46.31 % of total study area, which designate to a deteriorated territory of groundwater quality, and needs special treatment and cropping pattern before use. However, the moderate groundwater vulnerability class occupies an area of about 28.77 % of the total mapped area, which highlighted the need for certain management practices to prevent the saltwater intrusion from expanding further to the south. There was a good correlation of the constructed vulnerability map with the recently gathered water quality data and hydrochemical facies evolution. The plotting of water quality data on Piper trilinear diagram revealed the evolution of freshwater into the mixing and the saline zones as an impact of seawater intrusion, which validates the model results.  相似文献

Typological study, including paragenic, morphological, textural, and chemical characteristics of zircon from nine rare metal granitic stocks and associated greisens, was carried out in order to identify the metallogenic processes of their host granitoids. The investigated zircon‐bearing granitoids and type occurrences can be categorized into magmatically and metasomatically specialized types. The magmatic type includes: (i) peralkaline, Zr + Nb‐enriched, A1‐granite (e.g. Um Hibal); (ii) metaluminous, Nb + Zr + Y‐enriched, A2‐type alkali granite (e.g. Hawashia and Ineigi); and (iii) peraluminous, Ta ≥ Nb + Sn + Be ± W‐enriched, Li‐albite granite (e.g. Nuweibi, Igla and Abu Dabbab). The metasomatized granites are Nb>>Ta + Sn + Zr + Y + U ± Be ± W‐enriched and hydrothermally altered alkali feldspar granite (i.e. apogranite; e.g. Um Ara, Abu Rusheid, and Um Naggat). Zircon of peralkaline granite is characteristically equant with well‐developed pyramidal faces and short prisms (i.e. pseudo‐octahedral form) with length/width ratios in the range of 2:1–1:1. It is of Zr0.990Hf0.007SiO4 composition and is associated with hypersolvus assemblage consisting of alkali feldspar, quartz, aegirine and minor reibeckite. Zircon of metaluminous alkali granites is of Zr0.99Hf0.01SiO4 composition and is associated with sub‐ to transolvus assemblage of K‐feldspar, quartz, plagioclase and annite‐siderophyllite mica. It is prismatic with length/width ratios in the range of 5:1–3:1, doubly terminated with small pyramidal faces. Compositionally, zircon of Li‐albite granite ranges between Zr0.925Hf0.075SiO4 and Zr0.705Hf0.295SiO4. It is idiomorphic with a simple combination of prism and bipyramidal terminations with a length/width ratio of 3:1–2:1. This zircon commonly exhibits a normal zoning with rims consistently higher in Hf than cores. The higher Hf content, of this zircon coupled with its association with topaz, tantalite and lithian micas (e.g. zinnwaldite and Li‐white mica), indicates a higher solubility of Hf‐fluoride complexes and their more stabilized state at lower temperature in Li‐ and F‐rich sodic melts. Zircon of apogranite association ranges in composition between Zr0.967Hf0.013SiO4 in the lower unaltered alkali feldspar granite zone and Zr0.805Hf0.064(Y, U, Th, heavy rare‐earth elements) [HREE])0.125SiO4 in the apical metasomatized (i.e. microclinized, albitized, and greisenized) apogranite zones. This compositional change appears to reflect a roofward increasing in μKF, μNaF, and μHF of the exsolved fluids. Columbite, xenotime, thorite, cassiterite, beryl and fluorite are common associates of this zircon. This zircon is of bipyramidal to typical octahedral form with complete absence of prism concurrently with conspicuous development of pyramid, thus the zircon crystals have a length/width ratio of 1:1–0.5:1. The neoformed metasomatic zircon commonly exhibits either normal or reverse zoning with rims consistently different in Hf, U, Y, and HREE than cores, reflecting disequilibrium conditions (e.g. sudden change in P, T, salinity, and pH) between the growing crystals and the exsolved fluids.  相似文献

The Ganga–Mahawa sub‐basin, which has an area of 1280 km2 forms the western part of the Central Ganga Plain in the Moradabad and Badaun districts of western Uttar Pradesh, India. The Bundelkhand granite forms the basement complex, overlain unconformably by the upper Vindhyan sequence, which is further overlain by the Neogene (Middle and Upper) Siwaliks and finally by Quaternary alluvium. Four geomorphological units, the Varanasi older alluvial plain, Aligarh older alluvial plain, terrace zones and the Ganga recent floodplain, abandoned channels, channel scars and meander scars represent various landforms. The hydrogeological cross‐sections indicate the occurrence of a single aquifer down to 120 m. Some influent seepage from the River Ganga could be seen around Gangeswari, but the rest of the River Ganga is effluent. Groundwater‐flow modelling was carried out to assess the degree of Ganga river and aquifer interaction. The River Ganga marks the western boundary; boundaries to the northeast and southeast are set as fixed heads to simulate lateral inflow into and outflow from the sub‐basin respectively. The eastern boundary is simulated as a no‐flow condition. The Mahawa and Badmar rivers are considered to be effluent. The area modelled is covered by a grid of 34 rows×46 columns with three layers, viz., an unconfined aquifer, an aquitard which is underlain by a semi‐confined to confined aquifer. The permeability distribution was inferred from morphometric analysis and pumping tests. Natural recharge due to monsoon rainfall forms the main input. The River Ganga stage data at Ahar, Naora and Ramghat has been used for assigning surface water levels and river bed elevations in the model. Abstraction from all existing deep and shallow tube wells has been assigned as output at various cells. A steady state flow simulation was carried out and calibrated against the June 1986 water level; subsequent transient conditions were calibrated up to May 1995. The computed groundwater balance was comparable to that estimated from field investigations. The aquifer modelling study has attempted to integrate all available information and provided a tool that could be used for predictive simulation. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Grain crushing is commonly encountered in deep foundation engineering, high rockfill dam engineering, railway engineering, mining engineering, coastal engineering, petroleum engineering, and other geoscience application.Grain crushing is affected by fundamental soil characteristics, such as their mineral strength, grain size and distribution, grain shape, density and specimen size, and also by external factors including stress magnitude and path, loading rate and duration, degree of saturation, temperature and geochemical environment.Crushable material becomes a series of different materials with the change in its grading during grain crushing, resulting in a decrease in strength and dilatancy and an increase in compressibility.Effects of grain crushing on strength, dilatancy, deformation and failure mechanisms have been extensively investigated through laboratory testing, discrete element method(DEM)modelling,Weibull statistics, and constitutive modelling within the framework of the extended crushing-dependent critical state theory or the energy-based theory.Eleven papers summarized in this review article for this special issue addressed the above issues in grain crushing through the advanced testing and modelling.  相似文献

In the Wadi Feiran area, amphibolites occur as inclusions, bands, linear bodies of variable thickness and irregular lenses in para-geneisses. Chemical evidence indicates that these amphibolites display an igneous origin and were derived from magma essentially of tholelitic rather than alkaline composition; transitional in character between continental and island-arc. The chemistry of amphiboles, related to pressure and temperature conditions of meta-morphism, showed that they were formed under low pressure and high temperature conditions.  相似文献
