We have determined the production rate of in situ-produced 10Be in calcite through measurements of 10Be and 36Cl concentrations in the same calcite samples and of 10Be concentrations in depth profiles of flint from the same erosional surface. This yields a 10Be production rate in calcite of 37.9 ± 6.0 at/g/yr at sea level and high latitude, approximately sixfold higher than production in the coexisting flint. We propose that this higher rate of production may be due to high production cross sections for C spallation by cosmic rays with energies below 50 MeV. These results also open the possibility of dating burial events in carbonate-rich environments by differential radioactive decay of 10Be and 36Cl.  相似文献

It is well known that the solution of the forced vibration of a N-DOF dynamical problem is very cumbersome when conditions which allow the equations to uncouple do not exist. In the literature several techniques were proposed to overcome the problem, but they were mainly focused on a particular problem in turn. So, we deemed it useful to search for a unifying procedure able to deal with different sources of non-linear behaviour introducing only minor changes in the operation flow. In this respect, attention is paid to the Alternating Frequency/Time domain method (AFT) which draws its robustness from the speed and switching capabilities of the Fast Fourier Transform; moreover, taking advantage of the pseudo-force concept, we can arrive at a solution method featuring greater generality and able to solve different non-linear dynamical problems by means of specialization of the same conceptual framework (G-AFT or Generalized AFT). In the first section of the paper the theoretical background is discussed in detail and the proposed algorithms are presented. In the second one, several examples of technical relevance are documented and solved, highlighting the efficiency, convergence and accuracy of the presented algorithm. For cases such as an 11-storey building or a block simulated power plant we introduce the soil-structure interaction effect by means of non-proportional damping; the responses computed either by direct frequency analysis or by iteration are compared with existing solutions or with time domain solutions determined through the Newmark β method. An original example prepared by the authors and fully referenced is finally worked out in order to show the capability of the method when Coulomb damping is taken into account; this effect covers a significant practical relevance in the base isolation field.  相似文献

The proper choice of the acceptable seismic risk requires an accurate cost-benefit analysis. As is well known these analyses present considerable difficulties if one wishes to face the problem in a general way from the technical point of view. Besides, there are no generally accepted criteria for formulating a quantitative evaluation of the intangibles, among which the most important is the risk to human life. However, it appears indispensable that research should be started in the field which leads to some numerical results In this paper a simplified analytical model is proposed and the problem of intangibles is discussed. The basic idea is that the comparison with other risks is the most realistic instrument for the choice of an acceptable level of the specific considered risk. The conclusion reached is that a fundamental index for comparison and decision is the incremental cost of investment necessary to save, on average, one human life a year. An evaluation of such an index, valid as a first approximation, is given for this simplified model.  相似文献

Groundwaters from the Tithonian/Kimmeridgian, Oxfordian and Upper Dogger aquifers, within the eastern part of the Paris basin (France), were characterised using 3H, 14C and 36Cl, and noble gases tracers, to evaluate their residence times and determine their recharge period. This information is an important prerequisite to evaluating the confinement properties of the Callovo-Oxfordian clay formation sandwiched between the Oxfordian aquifer and the Dogger aquifer, currently being investigated by the French nuclear waste management agency (Andra) for radioactive waste disposal. Data presented in this paper are used to test 4 hypotheses.  相似文献

In October 1862, Robert Mallet published an extensive study of a large earthquake that occurred on 16 December 1857, 150 km south-east of Naples. This event is one of the most destructive ever recorded in Italy. Although continental earthquakes of similar size are almost invariably associated with surface faulting, Mallet did not identify any surface rupture and subsequent workers have also failed to find surface traces. Using satellite images and aerial photographs as a guide, we examined two prominent Quaternary normal fault systems in the field. Flanking the Val d'Agri and the Val di Diano, both trend NW–SE and dip to the SW. The distribution of damage suggests that one or both moved in 1857. On one fault segment in Val d'Agri, we found a 2.5-m high scarp whose youthfulness and height suggest it is due to the 1857 earthquake. Comparison of the observed slip with rates derived from geomorphic evidence suggests a recurrence time for 1857 type events of about 3000 years. While the new data we provide are consistent with the event having a magnitude of M s≈ 7.0, there are also grounds for supposing it might have been bigger.  相似文献

In order to aid in the efforts of the 2016 Olympic Games, the organizers of 2011 Rock in Rio decided to build a permanent venue next to the Olympic Park. The area is problematic from the geotechnical point of view since it presents soils with low shear strength, low permeability, and high plasticity, so major soil improvement works were carried out. Bored soil–cement columns were placed to increase soil shear strength and reduce compressibility. A meter thick fill composed of gneiss residual soil was placed and trenches were digged to drain rainwater. However, earlier studies conducted on Jacarepaguá Lagoon have detected the presence of heavy metals in these sediments. In this study, an environmental survey on the Jacarepaguá Lagoon sediments took place in order to choose a place where its sediments could be dredged to be later used in the drainage facilities. The results indicated areas where the threshold level 1 (low probability of adverse effects) issued by the general procedures for sediments quality assessments for dredging purposes, Resolution no 344 of the Brazilian Federal Government, was surpassed. Levels above the limits established for cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) were detected. Based on this consideration the State Environmental Agency issued a permit allowing the organizers of 2011 Rock in Rio to dredge an area close to City of Rock in order to obtain coarse sediments for the drainage facilities. In addition, it was found that those sediments were ideal for this application since their hydraulic conductivity is on the order of 10?2 cm/s.  相似文献

Organic matter is an important factor that cannot be neglected when considering global carbon cycle. New data including organic matter geochemistry at the small watershed scale are needed to elaborate more constrained carbon cycle and climatic models. The objectives are to estimate the DOC and DIC yields exported from small tropical watersheds and to give strong constraints on the carbon hydrodynamic of these systems. To answer these questions, we have studied the geochemistry of eleven small watersheds around Basse-Terre volcanic Island in the French West Indies during different hydrological regimes from 2006 to 2008 (i.e. low water level versus floods). We propose a complete set of carbon measurements, including DOC and DIC concentrations, δ13C data, and less commonly, some spectroscopic indicators of the nature of organic matter. The DOC/DIC ratio varies between 0.07 and 0.30 in low water level and between 0.25 and 1.97 during floods, indicating that organic matter is mainly exported during flood events. On the light of the isotopic composition of DOC, ranging from ? 32.8 to ? 26.2‰ during low water level and from ? 30.1 to ? 27.2‰ during floods, we demonstrate that export of organic carbon is mainly controlled by perennial saprolite groundwaters, except for flood events during which rivers are also strongly influenced by soil erosion. The mean annual yields ranged from 2.5 to 5.7 t km? 2 year? 1 for the DOC and from 4.8 to 19.6 t km? 2 year? 1 for the DIC and exhibit a non-linear relationship with slopes of watersheds. The flash floods explain around 60% of the annual DOC flux and between 25 and 45% of the DIC flux, highlighting the important role of these extreme meteorological events on global carbon export in small tropical volcanic islands. From a carbon mass balance point of view the exports of dissolved carbon from small volcanic islands are important and should be included in global organic carbon budgets.  相似文献

Suspended solids found in porewaters obtained in waterlogged soil sequences that included representative laterite–podzol transitions, associated brooks and major rivers of the Rio Negro watershed (Brazil) were studied using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopies. The main goal was to ascertain sources and track the evolution of suspended matter using a ubiquitous chemical species, FeIII complexed to organic matter (FeOM). Three size fractions were separated by tangential-flow (ultra)filtration: particulate (> 0.2 μm), dense (P) and light (Ps), and colloidal (5 kD < Col. < 0.2 μm) fractions. Quantitative results were acquired for Col. and Ps fractions which are predominantly organic in nature.FeOM concentration (in ‰ dry weight) was determined to be relatively low in suspended solids found in black waters from podzol porewaters and brooks whereas in the main rivers it was several times higher. FeOM concentrations were also correlated with Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratios in solution; these ratios were high in podzol porewaters and low in the rivers. Considering that organic complexation of Fe(II) is minor when compared to that of Fe(III), two interpretations were proposed to account for the above observation. First, [FeOM] was assumed to be distributed along a mixing line, with the clear waters from laterites and the black waters from podzols being its end-members. Consequently, [FeOM] can be used to trace the source of suspended material. Second, dissolved Fe(II) from podzol areas was considered to be progressively oxidized as pore waters move towards the mainstream. According to this mechanism, iron is complexed by organic matter or precipitated as oxides, thus producing an evolution of colloidal matter. As a result of these mechanisms' action, both the high production of Fe(II) and organic matter at the waterlogged podzol–laterite transition areas are major factors affecting iron export in the Rio Negro watershed.  相似文献

The polygenetic Albano maar is the most recent centre of the Colli Albani volcano, located just few kilometres to the south-east of Roma. Presently the maar hosts a 167.5 m deep crater lake, the deepest in Europe. The maar is to be considered quiescent, as phreatic activity is documented throughout the Holocene. This paper illustrates the close relationships between the activity of the maar and the history of settlement in the Roman region as recorded in the geology, archaeology, history and legends of the area. Severe fluctuations of the groundwater table and catastrophic overflows of the Lake Albano from the maar rim had occurred prior to and after the early prehistoric settlements dated in the maar area at the Eneolithic times (ca. III millennium B.C.). Repeated lahars occurred along the northwestern slope of the maar filling in the paleodrainage network and forming a vast plain. Paleohydraulic analyses on fluvial and lahar deposits originated from the Holocene phreatic activity of the Albano maar indicate sediment–water flows in excess of hundreds of cubic metres per second. Absolute age determinations of the paleosoil underlying one of the most recent deposits of the lahar succession at 5800 ± 100 yr B.P. (14C CAL) are in perfect agreement with the age of the overlying Eneolithic age settlements. The last catastrophic overflow is described in the Roman literature as a consequence of the anger of Poseidon against the Romans in 398 B.C. for their war against the Etruscans. In 394 B.C. the Romans decided to prevent the repetition of such events by the excavation through the maar crater wall of a 1.5 km long drain tunnel, which is still operational, keeping the lake 70 m below the lowest point of the maar rim. This tunnel drain may be regarded as the first prevention device for volcanic hazard in history and shows an unprecedented development of the engineering technology under the pressure of hazard perception. The surprising and still largely unknown results of this study are very important to redefine the hazard of the Roman region.  相似文献
