The only source of drinking water in Vilnius City, Lithuania's capital, is groundwater. It can be supplied from 20 wellfields situated in the City or its environs. About half of them (11) are located in the valley of the Neris River crossing the City. The exploited aquifers were formed by melting continental glaciers and modified by the river. Until 1990 groundwater resources had not been conserved—the per capita consumption for domestic use in Vilnius reached 350 l/day. After 1990, due to the increasing cost of supplying drinking water, its consumption was reduced by a factor of three. As pumping rates of wellfields in Vilnius were increased or decreased, the groundwater quality was changed significantly. It is mainly affected by the surface water and shallow aquifers of the hydrologic system. The unoxidised organic matter that enters the exploitable aquifers from rivers and polluted shallow groundwater consumes scarce oxygen resources, thus creating anoxic conditions favourable for increasing the accumulation of iron, manganese and ammonium. Modelling and monitoring data show that the concentrations of sulphates and chlorides in Vilnius wellfields indicate not only the rise of brackish water from below, but also downward seepage of polluted surface water into the aquifers.  相似文献

As the world’s largest importer of marine ornamental species for the aquaria, curio, home décor, and jewelry industries, the United States has an opportunity to leverage its considerable market power to promote more sustainable trade and reduce the effects of ornamental trade stress on coral reefs worldwide. Evidence indicates that collection of some coral reef animals for these trades has caused virtual elimination of local populations, major changes in age structure, and promotion of collection practices that destroy reef habitats. Management and enforcement of collection activities in major source countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines remain weak. Strengthening US trade laws and enforcement capabilities combined with increasing consumer and industry demand for responsible conservation can create strong incentives for improving management in source countries. This is particularly important in light of the March 2010 failure of the parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to take action on key groups of corals.  相似文献

A new theoretical approach for calculating the equilibrium photoelectron flux energy and pitch angle distribution in the ionosphere is presented. Photoelectron transport, secondary electron production, and energy degradation by the excitation of the discrete energy states of the neutral atmospheric constituents and by continuous energy transfer to the ambient thermal electron gas are included in a manner consistent with the Boltzmann equation which constitutes the foundation of the theory. A difference equation, suitable for numerical solution, is given, and a numerical method for the solution of this equation is discussed in detail.  相似文献

This paper presents the satellite-linked data acquisition and photogrammetry (SLiDAP) network, designed to conduct shore-based, close-range 3-D imaging in remote areas. The lack of communications and power infrastructure and ability to service the system requires periodic, synchronous operations of multiple semiautonomous elements with a high degree of reliability. The SLiDAP system uses an opportunistic network architecture based on four distinct levels of control, to accommodate unpredictable operational constraints and failures. The synchronization of periodic tasks in a distributed control and remotely operable network are highlighted, and measures to increase the reliability of system operations are discussed, including hardware redundancy, intelligent watchdog timer, software error tolerance, self-repair, and remote update capability. The characteristics of the SLiDAP system within the concept of autonomic computing are discussed.  相似文献

To date, over 500 short-period rocky planets with equilibrium temperatures above 1500 K have been discovered. Such planets are expected to support magma oceans, providing a direct interface between the interior and the atmosphere. This provides a unique opportunity to gain insight into their interior compositions through atmospheric observations. A key process in doing such work is the vapor outgassing from the lava surface. LavAtmos is an open-source code that calculates the equilibrium chemical composition of vapor above a dry melt for a given composition and temperature. Results show that the produced output is in good agreement with the partial pressures obtained from experimental laboratory data as well as with other similar codes from literature. LavAtmos allows for the modeling of vaporization of a wide range of different mantle compositions of hot rocky exoplanets. In combination with atmospheric chemistry codes, this enables the characterization of interior compositions through atmospheric signatures.  相似文献

The range of applicability of the transport equation for photoelectrons in the ionosphere (Mantas, 1975), is extended to thermal energies. The extension enables one to calculate the photoelectron distribution in the important low energy region (i.e. < 3 eV), where most of the thermal electron gas heating takes place, and thereby to obtain more accurate excitation rates for the low energy: electronic, vibrational and rotational states of the ionospheric constituents, than was formerly possible.  相似文献

Drinking water supply in Lithuania is entirely based on groundwater. Wellfields of Vilnius develop intermorainic ca. 50 m deep (in average) aquifer which is locally contaminated by chlorinated hydrocarbons— volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Groundwater abstraction activates VOCs migration from an abandoned factory into the pumping wells of one wellfield named “Vingis.” However monitoring data testify that only traces of VOCs were detected on the territory of this factory. Subsequent studies revealed the “secret”: dense VOCs have migrated from the territory of the polluter and have accumulated in lowermost places of pumped aquifer inside the wellfield. An attempt to ensure low concentration of VOCs in pumped water manipulating by pumping rates of more or less contaminated abstraction wells was not effective. Finally, an acceptable concentration of VOCs in supplied drinking water was ensured by permanent pumping out of the most polluted groundwater from some abstraction wells of the wellfield and diverting this water to the Neris River.  相似文献

Calculations are presented of energy spectra and angular and spatial distributions of electron fluxes in the ionosphere resulting from precipitation ofmonoenergetic (E = 25, 50 and 100 eV) electrons. The incident electrons are assumed to be isotropic over the downward direction. It is found that the resulting steady-state electron fluxes above ca. 300 km are highly anisotropic, and that the pitch angle distribution is energy dependent. About 15 per cent of the incident electrons are backscattered elastically to the protonosphere. A much larger number of electrons escape after they have deposited a part of their energy in the atmosphere. The mean energy of the escaping electrons is about half that of the incident electrons. About 50% of the incident energy is absorbed in the atmosphere, the remainder being returned to the protonosphere. The rate of absorption of energy is a maximum at heights between 300 and 400 km. Most of the energy is absorbed in ionization and excitation of atomic oxygen. An appreciable amount of energy is, however, absorbed as heat by the ambient electron gas. Altitude profiles are presented of the rates of ionization, excitation, and electron heating caused by soft electron precipitation.  相似文献

Calculations of the steady-state photoelectron energy and angular distribution in the altitude region between 120 and 1000 km are presented. The distribution is found to be isotropic at all altitudes below 250 km, while above this altitude anisotropies in both pitch angle and energy are found. The isotropy found in the angular distribution below 250 km implies that photoelectron transport below 250 km is insignificant, while the angular anisotropy found above this altitude implies a net photoelectron current in the upward direction. The energy anisotropy above 500 km arises from the selective backscattering of the low energy photoelectron population of the upward flux component by Coulomb collisions with the ambient ions. The total photoelectron flux attains its maximum value between about 40 and 70 km above the altitude at which the photoelectron production rate is maximum. The displacement of the maximum of the equilibrium flux is attributed to an increasing (with altitude) photoelectron lifetime. Photoelectrons at altitudes above that where the flux is maximum are on the average more energetic than those below that altitude. The flux of photoelectrons escaping to the protonosphere at dawn was found to be 2.6 × 108 cm?2 sec?1, while the escaping flux at noon was found to be 1.5 × 108 cm?2 sec?1. The corresponding escaping energy fluxes are: 4.4 × 109 eV cm?2 sec?1 and 2.7 × 109 eV cm?2 sec?1.  相似文献

Taking into account a general concept of risk parameters and knowing that natural gas provides very significant portion of energy, firstly, it is important to insure that the infrastructure remains as robust and reliable as possible. For this purpose, authors present available statistical information and probabilistic analysis related to failures of natural gas pipelines. Presented historical failure data is used to model age-dependent reliability of pipelines in terms of Bayesian methods, which have advantages of being capable to manage scarcity and rareness of data and of being easily interpretable for engineers. The performed probabilistic analysis enables to investigate uncertainty and failure rates of pipelines when age-dependence is significant and when it is not relevant. The results of age-dependent modeling and analysis of gas pipeline reliability and uncertainty are applied to estimate frequency of combustions due to natural gas release when pipeline failure occurs. Estimated age-dependent combustion frequency is compared and proposed to be used instead of conservative and age-independent estimate. The rupture of a high-pressure natural gas pipeline can lead to consequences that can pose a significant threat to people and property in the close vicinity to the pipeline fault location. The dominant hazard is combustion and thermal radiation from a sustained fire. The second purpose of the paper is to present the combustion consequence assessment and application of probabilistic uncertainty analysis for modeling of gas pipeline combustion effects. The related work includes performance of the following tasks: to study gas pipeline combustion model, to identify uncertainty of model inputs noting their variation range, and to apply uncertainty and sensitivity analysis for results of this model. The performed uncertainty analysis is the part of safety assessment that focuses on the combustion consequence analysis. Important components of such uncertainty analysis are qualitative and quantitative analysis that identifies the most uncertain parameters of combustion model, assessment of uncertainty, analysis of the impact of uncertain parameters on the modeling results, and communication of the results’ uncertainty. As outcome of uncertainty analysis the tolerance limits and distribution function of thermal radiation intensity are given. The measures of uncertainty and sensitivity analysis were estimated and outcomes presented applying software system for uncertainty and sensitivity analysis. Conclusions on the importance of the parameters and sensitivity of the results are obtained using a linear approximation of the model under analysis. The outcome of sensitivity analysis confirms that distance from the fire center has the greatest influence on the heat flux caused by gas pipeline combustion.  相似文献
