Barrier islands are important landforms in many coastal systems around the globe. Studies of modern barrier island systems are mostly limited to those of siliciclastic realms, where the islands are recognized as mobile features that form on transgressive coastlines and migrate landward as sea-level rises. Barrier islands of the ‘Great Pearl Bank’ along the United Arab Emirates coast are the best-known carbonate examples. These Holocene islands, however, are interpreted to be anchored by older deposits and immobile. The mid-Holocene to late-Holocene depositional system at Al Ruwais, northern Qatar, provides an example of a mobile carbonate barrier island system, perhaps more similar to siliciclastic equivalents. Sedimentological and petrographic analyses, as well as 14C-dating of shells and biogenic remains from vibracored sediments and surface deposits, show that after 7000 years ago a barrier system with a narrow back-barrier lagoon formed along what is now an exposed coastal zone, while, contemporaneously, a laterally-extensive coral reef was forming immediately offshore. After 1400 years ago the barrier system was forced to step ca 3 km seaward in response to a sea-level fall of less than 2 m, where it re-established itself directly on the mid-Holocene reef. Since that time, the barrier has retreated landward as much as 1000 m to its current position, exposing previously-deposited back-barrier lagoonal sediment at the open-coast shoreline. In modern neritic warm-water carbonate settings mobile barrier island systems are rare. Their construction and migration may be inhibited by reef formation, early cementation, and the relative inefficiency of sourcing beach sediments from open carbonate shelves. Carbonate barrier island systems likely formed more commonly during geological periods when ramps and unrimmed shelves predominated and in calcite seas, when meteoric cementation was minimized as a result of initial calcitic allochem mineralogy. As with their siliciclastic analogues, however, recognition of the influence of these transient landforms in the rock record is challenging.  相似文献

Rock explosion has always been a complex problem because neither rock characteristics nor explosion waves could be accurately estimated. As such, this imposes a high uncertainty on deterministic methodologies available for damage prediction. In this paper, by defining two damage zones around the blast hole, including crushed and cracked zones, a first-order reliability analysis (FORM) was adopted to address this issue. For this purpose, FORM was used in a double-loop algorithm, where the inner loop was responsible for converging the FORM, and the outer loop was assigned to feed the inner loop with new cases. Using such nested-loop algorithm, the probability of exceedance was calculated for any desired damage zone radius. The maximum effect of the involved parameters on the failure probability induced around the blast hole was additionally studied using a parametric reliability analysis. The results showed that the radii for crushed and cracked zones are limited to 0.5 and 4.2?m, respectively, so that the probability of going beyond these limits is less than 1%. Moreover, the analyses of decoupled explosions showed that increasing the gap between the explosion charge and wall of the borehole could severely reduce the failure probability; however, the maximum effect of decoupling ratio occurs in the small range of radii between 0.3?mm and 2.35?m.  相似文献

The Penjwin meta-peridotite rock represents one of the five main metamorphosed ultramafic bodies in Kurdistan region, Northwest Zagros Thrust Zone. It underwent at least two successively low-retrograde metamorphic events with one progressive one which all modified the original mineralogy and texture of primary dunite and harzburgite. The primary upper mantle mineral assemblage olivine?+?orthopyroxene?+?chromian spinel is replaced by olivine?+?tremolite–actiolite?+?anthopylite?+?talc?+?ferichromite?+?Cr-chlorite assemblage of amphibolite facies. The further retrograde metamorphic amphibolite facies assemblage is replaced by lizardite–chrysotile?+?Cr-chlorite?+?syn-serpentinization Cr-magnetite of lower greenschist facies. Later at the main Zagros thrust fault, low greenschist facies underwent progressive metamorphism due to the local effect of shear stress as a result of the exhumation and obduction of Penjwin ophiolite suite over Merga Red bed series during Tertiary. Lizardite–chrysotile transformed to antigorite and producing antigorite?+?carbonate?+?syn-serpentinization Cr-magnetite?+?Cr-chlorite assemblage of upper greenschist facies. Chromian spinel is concentrically zoned as a result of multi-stages retrogressive metamorphic events, in which the Cr # (Cr/(Cr?+?Al)) increases from core to rim (0.5 to 1). Three zones can be identified from core to rim: The core is primary Al-rich and mantled by ferrichromite of amphibolite facies. The most outer zone of chromian spinel grains is represented by syn-serpentinization Cr-magnetite of greenschist facies.  相似文献

Sedimentary basins in general, and deep saline aquifers in particular, are being investigated as possible repositories for large volumes of anthropogenic CO2 that must be sequestered to mitigate global warming and related climate changes. To investigate the potential for the long-term storage of CO2 in such aquifers, 1600 t of CO2 were injected at 1500 m depth into a 24-m-thick “C” sandstone unit of the Frio Formation, a regional aquifer in the US Gulf Coast. Fluid samples obtained before CO2 injection from the injection well and an observation well 30 m updip showed a Na–Ca–Cl type brine with ∼93,000 mg/L TDS at saturation with CH4 at reservoir conditions; gas analyses showed that CH4 comprised ∼95% of dissolved gas, but CO2 was low at 0.3%. Following CO2 breakthrough, 51 h after injection, samples showed sharp drops in pH (6.5–5.7), pronounced increases in alkalinity (100–3000 mg/L as HCO3) and in Fe (30–1100 mg/L), a slug of very high DOC values, and significant shifts in the isotopic compositions of H2O, DIC, and CH4. These data, coupled with geochemical modeling, indicate corrosion of pipe and well casing as well as rapid dissolution of minerals, especially calcite and iron oxyhydroxides, both caused by lowered pH (initially ∼3.0 at subsurface conditions) of the brine in contact with supercritical CO2.  相似文献

The extent of hydrogen and oxygen isotope exchange between clay minerals and water has been measured in the temperature range 100–350° for bomb runs of up to almost 2 years. Hydrogen isotope exchange between water and the clays was demonstrable at 100°. Exchange rates were 3–5 times greater for montmorillonite than for kaolinite or illite and this is attributed to the presence of interlayer water in the montmorillonite structure.Negligible oxygen isotope exchange occurred at these low temperatures. The great disparity in D and O18 exchange rates observed in every experiment demonstrates that hydrogen isotope exchange occurred by a mechanism of proton exchange independent of the slower process of O18 exchange.At 350° kaolinite reacted to form pyrophyllite and diaspore. This was accompanied by essentially complete D exchange but minor O18 exchange and implies that intact structural units in the pyrophyllite were inherited from the kaolinite precursor.  相似文献

Deuterium and O18 analyses were made on 25 formation-water samples from Miocene (Temblor Formation) and Eocene (McAdams Formation) reservoir rocks at Kettleman North Dome oil field, California, and on three surface water samples from Reef Ridge located about three miles to the west of the field. The δO18 values obtained generally increase with depth and most probably are due to temperature controlled exchange reactions with carbonate cement and dissolved carbonate species. The δD values obtained seem to be controlled primarily by the membrane behavior of shales modifying the assumed original values. The contribution of isotopic exchange between water and clays cannot be evaluated at present.The isotopic data support the conclusions based on a detailed study of geology, hydrodynamics, and formation water geochemistry (Kharaka, 1971) which indicate that:1. The Temblor Formation waters are probably meteoric in origin concentrated chemically and isotopically by shale membranes, and 2. The McAdams Formation waters were most probably obtained by squeezing the original interstitial marine connate waters of deposition from the underlying Mesozoic sediments.  相似文献

For the last 5 a, the authors have been investigating the transport, fate, natural attenuation and ecosystem impacts of inorganic and organic compounds in releases of produced water and associated hydrocarbons at the Osage-Skiatook Petroleum Environmental Research (OSPER) “A” and “B” sites, located in NE Oklahoma. Approximately 1.0 ha of land at OSPER “B”, located within the active Branstetter lease, is visibly affected by salt scarring, tree kills, soil salinization, and brine and petroleum contamination. Site “B” includes an active production tank battery and adjacent large brine pit, two injection well sites, one with an adjacent small pit, and an abandoned brine pit and tank battery site. Oil production in this lease started in 1938, and currently there are 10 wells that produce 0.2–0.5 m3/d (1–3 bbl/d) oil, and 8–16 m3/d (50–100 bbl/d) brine. Geochemical data from nearby oil wells show that the produced water source is a Na–Ca–Cl brine (∼150,000 mg/L TDS), with high Mg, but low SO4 and dissolved organic concentrations. Groundwater impacts are being investigated by detailed chemical analyses of water from repeated sampling of 41 boreholes, 1–71 m deep. The most important results at OSPER “B” are: (1) significant amounts of produced water from the two active brine pits percolate into the surficial rocks and flow towards the adjacent Skiatook reservoir, but only minor amounts of liquid petroleum leave the brine pits; (2) produced-water brine and minor dissolved organics have penetrated the thick (3–7 m) shale and siltstone units resulting in the formation of three interconnected plumes of high-salinity water (5000–30,000 mg/L TDS) that extend towards the Skiatook reservoir from the two active and one abandoned brine pits; and (3) groundwater from the deep section of only one well, BR-01 located 330 m upslope and west of the site, appear not to be impacted by petroleum operations.  相似文献

The air pollution index (API) is a common tool, which is often used for determining the quality of air in the environment. In this study, a discrete-time Markov chain model is applied for describing the stochastic behaviour of API data. The study reported in this paper is conducted based on the data collected from Klang city in Malaysia for a period of 3 years (2012–2014). Based on the API data, we considered a five-state Markov chain for depicting the five different states of the air pollution. We identified the Markov chain is an ergodic Markov chain and determined the limiting distribution for each state of the air pollution. In addition, we have identified the mean first passage time from one state to another. Based on the limiting distribution and the mean return time, we found that the risk of occurrences for unhealthy events is small. However, the risk remains notably troubling. Therefore, the standard of air quality in Klang falls within a margin that is considered healthy for human beings.  相似文献

Abstract— A newly fallen Sudanese meteorite named Al Zarnkh was investigated using room and liquid nitrogen temperature Mössbauer measurements, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) in conjunction with energy dispersive X‐ray microscopy. The Mössbauer spectra exhibited strong paramagnetic doublets with magnetic sextets. The doublets are assigned to olivine and pyroxene, while the magnetic sextets are assigned to troilite and kamacite. Based on microprobe analyses and textural studies, olivine is the most abundant phase and occurs as fine to medium grained laths both in the groundmass and in barred olivine chondrules. Both orthopyroxenes and clinopyroxenes are present and these tend to be granular. Plagioclase is an abundant interstitial groundmass phase. Chromites were detected in some groundmass olivine and are highly chromiumand iron‐rich with no Fe3+ detected. The kamacite contains small amounts of Co. The mole fraction of the Fe end‐member of olivine (fayalite) and orthopyroxene (ferrosilite) are found to be about 28% and 23%, respectively. These values are compared with that obtained from two chondritic meteorites. Based on these results, the studied meteorite is classified as an ordinary LL5 chondrite.  相似文献
