A hydrothermal plume forms in Lake Banyoles, NE Spain, as a result of convection above a springwater-fed suspension cloud ponded on the lake floor. The plume propagates upwards reaching a level of neutral buoyancy from where a turbidity current spreads out laterally. Two-dimensional temperature and particle concentration measurements show the fate of the hydrothermal plume and its associated turbidity current and reveal its seasonal development. Silt particles transported by the plume have been used as tracers to determine the maximum and equilibrium heights of the plume. When the lake is stratified, the vertical transport of sediment is confined to the lake hypolimnion, as the thermocline limits the vertical propagation of the plume. In contrast, when the lake water column is mixed, the plume reaches the surface of the lake. The field measurements have been compared with models for thermal convection from finite isolated sources. Measurements of the flow velocity at the source of the hydrothermal plume (i.e. the rim current velocity) indicate that cold hypolimnetic water is entrained by the plume. Sedimentation rates measured from sediment traps at the zone where the turbidity current develops vary between 10 and 25 g m−2 day−1, and result from continuous silt particle sedimentation from the turbidity current. Sedimentation rates in traps are higher for stations situated close to the source than those further away (<5 g m−2 day−1). Moreover, the results demonstrate that double diffusive sedimentation from the turbidity current was dominant over grain-by-grain settling, causing a mixed distribution of sediments in the region where the turbidity current spreads. The deposition of silt particles could explain the occurrence of silt layers interbedded with biocalcarenites in the littoral zones of the lake and the stratigraphy identified by seismic profiles and cores taken from the lake floor.  相似文献

This study highlights three‐dimensional variability of stratigraphic geometries in the ramp crest to basin of mixed carbonate–siliciclastic clinoforms in the Permian San Andres Formation. Standard field techniques and mapping using ground‐based lidar reveal a high degree of architectural complexity in channellized, scoured and mounded outer ramp stratigraphy. Development of these features was a function of location along the ramp profile and fluctuations in relative sea‐level. Deposition of coarse‐grained and fine‐grained turbidites in the distal outer ramp occurred through dilute and high‐density turbidity flows and was the result of highstand carbonate shedding within individual cycles. In this setting, high‐frequency cycles of relative sea‐level are interpreted on the basis of turbidite frequency, lateral extent and composition. Submarine siliciclastic sediment bypass during lowstand cycles resulted in variable degrees of siliciclastic preservation. Abundant siliciclastic material is preserved in the basin and distal outer ramp as point‐sourced lowstand wedges and line‐sourced early transgressive blankets. In mounded topography of the outer ramp, siliciclastic preservation is minimal to absent, and rare incised channels offer the best opportunity for recognition of a sequence boundary. Growth of mounded topography in the outer ramp began with scouring, followed by a combination of bioherm construction, fusulinid mound construction and isopachous draping. Intermound areas were then filled with sediment and continued mound growth was prevented by an accommodation limit. Mound growth was independent of high‐frequency cycles in relative sea‐level but was dependent on available accommodation dictated by low‐frequency cyclicity. Low‐angle ramp clinoforms with mounded topography in the outer ramp developed during the transgressive part of a composite sequence. Mound growth terminated as the ramp transformed into a shelf with oblique clinoform geometries during the highstand of the composite sequence. This example represents a ramp‐to‐shelf transition that is the result of forcing by relative sea‐level fluctuations rather than ecologic or tectonic controls.  相似文献

The present work summarises the results of a 2‐year study of wet‐only sequential deposition in 2 rural areas (Alcan¯iz and Morella) located at different distances from a large coal‐fired power station. Precipitation chemistry was characterised by relatively high , Ca2+ and average concentrations. Sequential study of single precipitation events showed that concentrations of most of the ions studied decreased exponentially throughout single precipitation events, with a sharper decrease in concentrations at the beginning of the event. Usually, 40 to 80% of the wet‐only deposition of major ions occurred in the first 2 mm. pH measurements, ranging from 5.6 to 8.1, showed a decrease in the pH values throughout a precipitation event. Deposition levels of Ca2+ and accounted for the neutralisation of major acidic species in the precipitation events except in 5 rain episodes sampled at Morella. The sequential study of the evolution of the ratio during a single precipitation allowed us to identify potential acidic rainfall fractions after an initial volume of precipitation, after most of the Ca2+ in atmospheric particles had been scavenged. Evidence for a major heating event accompanied by decompressionwas recently reported from crustal rocks drilled in the Alboranbasin. The metamorphic evolution recorded by these rocks impliescomplete removal of lithospheric mantle during the Cenozoic,a process that is confirmed by geophysical modelling indicatingthin lithosphere beneath the Alboran domain. In this region,the Ronda lherzolite massif (Betic Cordillera, southern Spain)provides a unique opportunity for the observation of mantleprocesses associated with lithospheric thinning. A strikingfeature of the Ronda peridotite is a narrow recrystallizationfront, which has been ascribed to kilometre-scale porous meltflow through the massif. The front separates the spinel tectonitedomain, interpreted as old, veined lithospheric mantle, fromthe granular domain where the lithospheric microstructures,mineralogical assemblages and geochemical signatures were obliteratedby grain growth coeval with pervasive infiltration of basalticmelts. On the basis of trace-element abundances in peridotitescollected over a distance of 12 km along the recrystallizationfront, our study confirms that the front is a relatively sharp(  相似文献
