Though ubiquitous in the global oceans, double diffusive mixing has been largely ignored or poorly represented in the models of turbulent mixing in the ocean and in 3-D ocean models, until recently. Salt fingers occur in the interior of many marginal seas and ocean basins, the Tyrrhenian Sea and the subtropical Atlantic being two examples. Diffusive convection type of double diffusion occurs in the upper layers of many sub-polar seas and polar oceans due to cold melt water from sea ice. Consequently, it is important to be able to properly parameterize double diffusive mixing in basin scale and global ocean models, so that the water mass structure in the interior of the ocean can be properly simulated. This note describes a model for double diffusive mixing in the presence of background shear, based on Mellor–Yamada type second moment closure, more specifically Kantha, 2003, Kantha and Clayson, 2004 second moment closure models of resulting turbulence, following Canuto et al. (2008a) but employing a different strategy for modeling the pertinent terms in the second moment equations. The resulting model is suitable for inclusion in ocean general circulation models. 相似文献

The paper examines the quality of Tropical Rainfall Monitoring Mission (TRMM) 3B42 V7 precipitation product to simulate the streamflow using Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model for various rainfall intensities over the Himalayan region. The SWAT model has been set up for Gandak River Basin with 41 sub-basins and 420 HRUs. Five stream gauge locations are used to simulate the streamflow for a time span of 10 years (2000–2010). Daily streamflow for the simulation period is collected from Central Water Commission (CWC), India and Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), Nepal. The simulation results are found good in terms of Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency \((\hbox {NSE}) {>}0.65\), coefficient of determination \((R^{2}) {>}0.67\) and Percentage Bias \(\hbox {(PBIAS)}{<}15\%\), at each stream gauge sites. Thereafter, we have calculated the PBIAS and RMSE-observations standard deviation ratio (RSR) statistics between TRMM simulated and observed streamflow for various rainfall intensity classes, viz., light (\({<}7.5 \, \hbox {mm}/\hbox {d}\)), moderate (7.5 to 35.4 mm/d), heavy (35.5 to 124.4 mm/d) and extremely heavy (\({>}124.4 \, \hbox {mm}/\hbox {d}\)). The PBIAS and RSR show that TRMM simulated streamflow is suitable for moderate to heavy rainfall intensities. However, it does not perform well for light- and extremely-heavy rainfall intensities. We want to develop a dialogue between geophysicists and hydrologists interested in synergistically advancing process based watershed research. We identify recent advances in geophysical instrumentation, and provide a vision for the use of electrical and magnetic geophysical instrumentation in watershed scale hydrology. The focus of the paper is to identify instrumentation that could significantly advance this vision for geophysics and hydrology during the next 3–5 years. We acknowledge that this is one of a number of possible ways forward and seek only to offer a relatively narrow and achievable vision. The vision focuses on the measurement of geological structure and identification of flow paths using electrical and magnetic methods. The paper identifies instruments, provides examples of their use, and describes how synergy between measurement and modelling could be achieved. Of specific interest are the airborne systems that can cover large areas and are appropriate for watershed studies. Although airborne geophysics has been around for some time, only in the last few years have systems designed exclusively for hydrological applications begun to emerge. These systems, such as airborne electromagnetic (EM) and transient electromagnetic (TEM), could revolutionize hydrogeological interpretations. Our vision centers on developing nested and cross scale electrical and magnetic measurements that can be used to construct a three‐dimensional (3D) electrical or magnetic model of the subsurface in watersheds. The methodological framework assumes a ‘top down’ approach using airborne methods to identify the large scale, dominant architecture of the subsurface. We recognize that the integration of geophysical measurement methods, and data, into watershed process characterization and modelling can only be achieved through dialogue. Especially, through the development of partnerships between geophysicists and hydrologists, partnerships that explore how the application of geophysics can answer critical hydrological science questions, and conversely provide an understanding of the limitations of geophysical measurements and interpretation. The application of a neural network controller to remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) is described. Three learning algorithms for online implementation of a neural net controller are discussed with a critic equation. These control schemes do not require any information about the system dynamics except an estimate of the inertia terms. Selection of the number of layers in the neural network, the number of neurons in the hidden layer, initial weights for the network and the critic coefficient were done based on the results of preliminary tests. The performances of the three learning algorithms were compared by computer simulation. We show that up to second order in the thinness parameter, the equations of equilibrium of a thin, isolated, axisymmetric, force-free magnetic flux tube in a stratified atmosphere and the other essential constraints form a mathematically closed system. When the fluid below a buoyancy interface such as the seasonal thermocline in the ocean is stably stratified as it is often, energy radiation by internal waves into regions deep below is possible. In this paper, the dispersion relation for a sharp thermocline separating a well-mixed layer from a weakly but stably stratified fluid below is derived and examined for such energy leakage into the fluid below. It is found that the interfacial waves running along such a buoyancy interface leak their energy to radiating internal waves and are rapidly attenuated, if their frequency is less than the buoyancy frequency of the fluid below. The implications the leaky nature of the modes have on resonant excitation of internal waves in the ocean by atmospheric pressure fluctuations and turbulence in the mixed layer are also examined. It is found that efficient resonant build up of interfacial waves is possible only for nonleaky modes and even then their growth rate is modified slightly by the presence of stratified fluid below the interface. 相似文献

We present a statistical study of the characteristics of type-II radio bursts observed in the metric (m) and deca-hectometer
(DH) wavelength range during 1997–2008. The collected events are divided into two groups: Group I contains the events of m-type-II
bursts with starting frequency ≥ 100 MHz, and group II contains the events with starting frequency of m-type-II radio bursts
< 100 MHz. We have analyzed both samples considering three different aspects: i) statistical properties of type-II bursts, ii) statistical properties of flares and CMEs associated with type-II bursts, and iii) time delays between type-II bursts, flares, and CMEs. We find significant differences in the properties of m-type-II bursts
in duration, bandwidth, drift rate, shock speed and delay between m- and DH-type-II bursts. From the timing analysis we found
that the majority of m-type-II bursts in both groups occur during the flare impulsive phase. On the other hand, the DH-type-II
bursts in both groups occur during the decaying phase of the associated flares. Almost all m-DH-type-II bursts are found to
be associated with CMEs. Our results indicate that there are two kinds of shock in which group I (high frequency) m-type-II
bursts seem to be ignited by flares whereas group II (low frequency) m-type-II bursts are CME-driven. 相似文献
