In this note the effect of changes in sea-state, as measured by the significant wave heigh Hs, on the joint distribution of individual wave height and period are considered. Wave data, obtained from a Waverider buoy during the growth phase of a storm, are used in the analysis. It is found that, by correctly scaling the individual heights and periods, the form of the joint distribution does not depend on Hs, but is dependent on the bandwidth of the spectrum. The results obtained also give some indication of the period of individual, high zero-upcrossing waves.  相似文献

We present a study on the emergence of spatial variability, or patchiness, in biophysical simulations of plankton ecosystems. Using a standard approach to modelling such ecosystems, we represent a distribution of plankton as a lattice of non-identical interacting oscillatory populations. Spatial variation is imposed in population parameters, such as maximum growth rate, leading to a spread in the natural (uncoupled) population properties. Using the methods of synchronisation theory, the emergent spatial structure of the coupled system is investigated as a function of the strength of interaction between populations. Surprisingly, a range of coupling strength is found to induce a tenfold increase in the spread in frequency of oscillation of populations in comparison with the uncoupled level of spatial variation. This apparent desynchronisation corresponds to the formation of temporally evolving clusters of local synchronisation: the interplay of grid-cell scale variability and dispersal between populations leads to patchiness at larger scales. However, the occurrence and length-scale of this patchiness is found to be sensitive to typical simulation parameters such as spatial resolution and strength of dispersal, with emergent spatial structure altering abruptly from patchy to homogeneous as these parameters are varied. These results indicate that whilst cluster synchronisation may be a genuine mechanism for the formation of spatial structure in plankton distributions, biophysical modellers should be aware of the possibility of artificial patchiness arising from the basic physical structure of their model.  相似文献

Three theoretical joint distributions of wave height and period are compared with data. Both crest-to-trough waves and zero-upcrossing waves are considered. The data consist of two long Waverider records (of 12 and 8 hr) and a shorter record taken from a reservoir. It is found that a distribution based on the theory of Gaussian processes fits the crest-to-trough waves well in all cases. In contrast, the two narrow band approximations only fit the data from the reservoir, which is more narrow band. The effect of high frequency cut-off on the distribution of height and period are considered.  相似文献

Policies of the Economic Development Administration are considered to be target inefficient compared to those of the Comprehensive Employment Training Act. Experimental mobility policies of the Department of Labor appear to be have questionable impact locally as opposed to nationally. The seepage occurrence from the reservoir on the right bank of the Akde?irmen Dam located in Afyonkarahisar province in the Turkey has been investigated. When the reservoir began to fill with water, a large amount of water seepage occurred at the dam. The seepage developed at the base of the spillway and the right downstream slope of the dam. The various attempts have been made to reduce the seepage using grouting. Although the additional grouting operations was reduced the seepage at the base of the spillway, there has not been a reduction in seepage at the water outlet location at the downstream slope. Electrical resistivity measurements along the eight lines with the dipole–dipole array and dye tracer tests were performed in order to identify the seepage locations. The interpretation of electrical resistivity data showed the distribution of strata and the seepage zone along the right downstream of the dam. Groundwater flow rates calculated from dye tests indicated that there is an excessive seepage south-eastwardly on the downstream slope of the dam. Integrated interpretation of resistivity data and dye tests indicate that the seepage paths are in the direction from NW to E and SE.  相似文献

In the past, errors in the determination of the orbit were dominant in radar altimeter missions, but technical advances have improved the orbit accuracy and hence, other sources of error have become more important. Sea-state bias is now the main source of error and can be divided into three sea-state dependent errors: skewness, electromagnetic bias, and tracker bias. We estimated the magnitude of the third term, by retracking ocean waveforms from ENVISAT RA-2. The retracking algorithm used is based on Maximum Likelihood Estimation. Tracker bias shows a seasonal and geographical dependence related to the distribution of significant wave height (SWH) and time origin differences. We estimated a mean value of 0.13 ± 0.07 %SWH. Temporal and regional dependent errors are introduced when using a linear retracker processing approach.  相似文献

An adequate conceptual definition of the geoid is essential for the unambiguous combination of satellite tracking data, satellite al‐timetry, and surface gravity measurements to obtain sea surface topography. The factors influencing the selection of a particular level surface of the earth's gravity field include the purpose(s) for which the geoid is to be used at the 5‐cm level, and the types of data to be used in achieving these objectives. The principal reasons for high precision determinations of the shape of the geoid are: the determination of sea surface topography for applications in oceanography; and the unification of leveling datums with a resolution equivalent to that of first order geodetic leveling. A conceptual definition of the geoid acceptable to oceanographers would be: The geoid for a selected epoch of measurement is that level surface of the earth's gravity field in relation to which the average non‐tidal (or quasi‐stationary) sea surface topography is zero as sampled globally in ocean regions. In the geodetic context, it would be convenient, though not essential, to modify this definition in such a way that the global sea surface topography had zero mean as sampled for evaluations of the geodetic boundary value problem. In either case, a basis exists for unifying all leveling datums serving areas in excess of 106 km2, using either gravity anomaly data for the regions or precise determinations of position at first order bench marks. Unfavorable signal‐to‐noise ratios can pose problems when dealing with datums serving smaller areas. Elevation and gravity data banks must be correctly referenced to leveling datums prior to use in sea surface topography determinations. A recent attempt to upgrade the Australian gravity anomaly data bank indicates that all current data banks of this type are inadequate for the task. It is unlikely that time variations in the radial position of the geoid as conceptually defined above, will exceed ±5 cm per century, provided the rate of earth expansion was less than 1 part in 1010 yr‐l and there is no dramatic change in the present rate of secular change in Mean Sea Level.  相似文献

Benthic foraminifera can be used as environmental bioindicators, especially in polluted environments where their sensitivity to pollutants may be expressed by a modification in the assemblage. Nineteen sediment samples were collected in November 2002 from surficial sediments of the Gulf of Izmir (Turkey). The Gulf of Izmir is located in Western Turkey and surrounded by a densely populated community. The gulf has been contaminated by numerous heavy metals, but geochemical analyses have shown that metals are significant pollutants only in the inner part of the gulf. Outer and Middle Sections showed low levels of heavy metals, except the estuary of Gediz River. Eight heavy metals have been analyzed in all the sampling points. Sixty-seven foraminifer and 22 ostracod species were identified in 16 sediment samples. Statistical analysis shows that there is a significant correlation between foraminifera species and heavy metals. The most polluted Inner Sections are dominated by the tolerant species Ammonia tepida that may be used as pollution indicator. The gradient observed in heavy metal concentrations between the Outer and Inner Sections has a prevalent influence on the foraminiferal distribution. There is a gradient of the number of species, increasing from the Inner Section toward the Outer Section. The occurrence of test abnormalities among foraminifera may represent a useful biomarker for evaluating long-term environmental impacts in a coastal region.  相似文献

Geophysical methods such as seismic surveying and electrical resistivity imaging appear to be well-adapted to investigate and understand landslide mechanisms. They allow direct and non-intrusive measurement of acoustic velocity and electrical resistivity, two fundamental parameters used to define the physical properties of the reworked moving materials. Both methods were applied at the Super-Sauze site in the French South Alps, where a typical example of an intra-material earthflow-mudslide can be observed. Measurements were taken simultaneously along two orthogonal profiles: one 325 m in length is perpendicular to the axis of the earthflow; the other 235 m in length is located along the axis of the earthflow. The results show a correlation between the seismic and electrical resistivity data, confirming that the simultaneous use of both methods gives complementary information about landslide mechanisms. The seismic data provide information on fracture density variations, whereas the electrical resistivity data provide information on water content variations. To cite this article: G.
