Abstract— Mineralogical, petrographical and chemical determinations were made for 743 agate (banded variety of chalcedonic quartz) nodules (diameters from 5 mm to 5 cm) formed during postimpact, low-temperature hydrothermal activity as vesicle fillings in the melt rocks of the Sääksjärvi meteorite impact structure (diameter 5 km) in southwest Finland. Other hydrothermal vesicle fillings in the impact melt rocks include chlorite, mordenite, smectite and kaolinite. The agates were classified into two types, whose mineralogical properties and chemical compositions fall within the range of volcanic agates (basaltic and rhyolitic host rocks). The relatively high age (~510 Ma) of the Sääksjärvi impact melt rocks, however, is reflected by the presence of recrystallization textures, which are rare in younger volcanic agates. The Sääksjärvi structure was initially located after following the fortuitous discovery of agate “path-finders” in the glacial overburden. It is recommended that wherever volcanic type agates are found as float in Precambrian shield areas devoid of younger volcanic rocks, the possible presence of impact (or volcanic) craters in the vicinity should be considered.  相似文献

The Oligocene Balleny Group of Chalky Island, southwestern Fiordland, comprises a typical continental margin sequence 900 m in thickness. Thin nearshore traction deposited sediments at the base are overlain by submarine canyon and fan lithofacies that were deposited by the full range of subaqueous mass-transport processes. A steep-walled channel within Balleny Group is interpreted as a fossil proximal fan-channel. The sedimentary fill of the channel is texturally similar to sediments moving by slump-creep in Recent submarine canyons and fan-valleys. The field data presented indicate (1) that a small canyon complex at Sealers Bay was initially cut by subaqueous debris-flows derived from an adjacent cliffed continental coast; (2) that transport within the upper parts of the canyon and fanchannel complex was primarily by inertia-flow and slump-creep; and (3) that these more proximal types of mass-transport gave way gradationally and successively to fluxoturbidity and turbidity currents at locations further down-slope, with consequent deposition of sediment in more distal fan-channel and fan-surface environments as fluxoturbidites and turbidites, with lesser contributions from inertia-flows.  相似文献

Andersson, S. & Schoning, K. 2010: Surface wetness and mire development during the late Holocene in central Sweden. Boreas, Vol. 39, pp. 749–760. 10.1111/j.1502‐3885.2010.00157.x. ISSN 0300‐9483. Late Holocene mire development and surface wetness changes have been studied in a small mixed mire located in central Sweden. Today the mire is characterized by a mainly ombrotrophic centre dominated by Sphagnum mosses, with Carex content increasing towards the more minerotrophic mire margins. Two peat sequences extracted from the central ombrotrophic part were investigated for stratigraphy, humification, testate amoebae analysis, C/N ratio and δ13C and δ15N stable isotopes. Three main stages of mire development are identified, with the first stage, between c. 4200 and 2600 cal. yr BP, characterized by water‐logged conditions, suggesting a minerotrophic fen stage. The second stage, between c. 2600 and 1000 cal. yr BP, is characterized by more ombrotrophic conditions and Sphagnum‐dominated vegetation. The onset of the prominent change at c. 2600 cal. yr BP could have been initiated by climate change coincident with a change in solar activity. The last stage, between c. 1000 and 50 cal. yr BP, is dominated by more ombrotrophic conditions, suggesting increased precipitation. This study shows that the response of hydrological proxies in a mixed mire during its development towards more ombrotrophic conditions might result in conflicting results, a finding that needs to be considered in palaeoenvironmental reconstructions from mires that change between ombrotrophic and minerotrophic settings.  相似文献

Eighteen sites in middle Sweden with sediments deposited during the brackish phase of the Yoldia Sea have been investigated with respect to the marine calcareous benthic fauna (i.e. foraminifera, ostracods and molluscs) and stable oxygen isotopes. At most sites the sediments consist of varved clay sequences which are correlated to the Swedish Time Scale and dated to the Early Preboreal. A marine benthic fauna has been recorded at 11 sites. The fauna occurs during c. 100 clay-varve years and the total length of the brackish phase is estimated to be 110-190 years. Near the inlet of saline water the fauna was dominated by the foraminifera Elphidium excavatum (Terquem) and further to the east the ostracod Cytheropteron montrosiense (Brady, Crosskey and Robertson) dominated. At shallower depths the fauna occurred during a shorter period owing to the formation of a stratified water column with a low-saline surface water. Very low δ 18 O c values were recorded, i.e. between -9.9‰ and -4.7‰ because of the influence of meltwater from the ice sheet. A different isotope fractionation between the foraminifera E. excavatum and the ostracod C. montrosiense was recorded.  相似文献
