Positron-electron pair radiation is examined as a mechanism that could be responsible for the impulsive phase emission of the 5 March, 1979 transient. Synchrotron cooling and subsequent annihilation of the pairs can account for the energy spectrum, the very high brightness, and the 0.4 MeV feature observed from this transient, whose source is likely to be a neutron star in the supernova remnant N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. In this model, the observed radiation is produced in the skin layer of a hot, radiation-dominated pair atmosphere, probably confined to the vicinity of the neutron star by a strong magnetic field. The width of this layer is only about 0.1 mm. In this layer, 1012 generations of pairs are formed (by photon-photon collisions), cooled and annihilated during the 0.15 s duration of the impulsive phase. The very large burst energy implied by the distance of the LMC, and its very rapid release, are unsolved problems. We mention, nonetheless, the possibility of neutron star vibrations, which could transport the energy coherently to the surface, heat the atmosphere mechanically to a hot, pair-producing temperature, and have a characteristic damping time roughly equal to the duration of the impulsive phase.Paper presented at the Symposium on Cosmic Gamma-Ray Bursts held at Toulouse, France, 26–29 November, 1979.  相似文献

Three different models have been proposed for LiBeB production bycosmic rays: the CRI model in which the cosmic rays areaccelerated out of an ISM of solar composition scaled withmetallicity; the CRS model in which cosmic rays with compositionsimilar to that of the current epoch cosmic rays are acceleratedout of fresh supernova ejecta; and the LECR model in which adistinct low energy component coexists with the postulated cosmicrays of the CRI model. These models are usually distinguished bytheir predictions concerning the evolution of the Be and Babundances. Here we emphasize the energetics which favor the CRSmodel. This model is also favored by observations showing that thebulk (80 to 90%) of all supernovae occur in hot, low densitysuperbubbles, where supernova shocks can accelerate the cosmicrays from supernova ejecta enriched matter. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We study the evolution of an ensemble of energetic (1 GeV) protons in a twisted force-free magnetic loop. The protons are followed with a bounce-average method and they are subjected to collisions with ambient gas and pitch-angle scattering by plasrma turbulence in the loop. The proton loss is initially by drift and later by scattering into the loss cone. Gamma rays are produced by pion decays resulting from nuclear reactions of these lost protons. It is found that in order to have long-lasting protons, one of the following scenarios should hold: (1) For small loops (of length 2 × 109 cm), the twist angle should be about 2 and the turbulence level below 10–8 erg cm–3. (2) For large loops ( 1010 cm), the turbulence level should be below 10–6 erg cm–3. These set the conditions for testing the trapping picture as a viable explanation for the observed eight-hour gamma-ray emission.  相似文献

The intensity and frequency spectrum of gyro-synchrotron emission from energetic solar electrons radiating in coronal magnetic fields are calculated. These calculations, based on a recent study of the generation of gyro-synchrotron emission in a magnetoactive plasma, are applied to a Type IV radio burst originating at a high altitude in the solar corona. It is shown that the observed frequency spectrum of the burst, which exhibits very sharp low and high frequency cutoffs, can be best understood in terms of gyro-synchrotron emission in an ionized medium and that from the observed frequency spectrum and the ambient coronal density it is possible to deduce both the magnetic field at the site of the emission and the range of electron energies responsible for the burst.NAS-NASA Post-Doctoral Resident Research Associate.Research supported by the National Research Foundation under grant GP-849.  相似文献

By introducing a hitherto ignored 6Li producing process, due to accelerated 3He reactions with 4He, we show that accelerated particle interactions in solar flares produce much more 6Li than 7Li. By normalizing our calculations to gamma-ray data, we demonstrate that the 6Li produced in solar flares, combined with photospheric 7Li, can account for the recently determined solar wind lithium isotopic ratio, obtained from measurements in lunar soil, provided that the bulk of the flare-produced lithium is evacuated by the solar wind. Further research in this area could provide unique information on a variety of problems, including solar atmospheric transport and mixing, solar convection and the lithium depletion issue, and solar wind and solar particle acceleration.  相似文献

An analysis, with a representative (canonical) example of solar-flare-generated equatorial disturbances, is presented for the temporal and spatial changes in the solar wind plasma and magnetic field environment between the Sun and one astronomical unit (AU). Our objective is to search for first order global consequences rather than to make a parametric study. The analysis - an extension of earlier planar studies - considers all three plasma velocity and magnetic field components (V r, Vφ, V0, and B r, B0, Bφ) in any convenient heliospheric plane of symmetry such as the ecliptic plane, the solar equatorial plane, or the heliospheric equatorial plane chosen for its ability (in a tilted coordinate system) to order northern and southern hemispheric magnetic topology and latitudinal solar wind flows. Latitudinal velocity and magnetic field gradients in and near the plane of symmetry are considered to provide higher-order corrections of a specialized nature and, accordingly, are neglected, as is dissipation, except at shock waves. The representative disturbance is examined for the canonical case in which one describes the temporal and spatial changes in a homogeneous solar wind caused by a solar-flare-generated shock wave. The ‘canonical’ solar flare is assumed to produce a shock wave that has a velocity of 1000 km s#X2212;1 at 0.08 AU. We have examined all plasma and field parameters at three radial locations: central meridian and 33° W and 90° W of the flare's central meridian. A higher shock velocity (3000 km s#X2212;1) was also used to demonstrate the model's ability to simulate a strongly-kinked interplanetary field. Among the global (first-order) results are the following: (i) incorporation of a small meridional magnetic field in the ambient magnetic spiral field has negligible effect on the results; (ii) the magnetic field demonstrates strong kinking within the interplanetary shocked flow, even reversed polarity that - coupled with low temperature and low density - suggests a viable explanation for observed ‘magnetic clouds’ with accompanying double-streaming of electrons at directions ~ 90° to the heliocentric radius.  相似文献

Relativistic electrons in large solar flares produce gamma-ray continuum by bremsstrahlung and microwave emission by gyrosynchrotron radiation. Using observations of the 1972, August 4 flare, we evaluate in detail the electron spectrum and the physical properties (density, magnetic field, size, and temperature) of the common emitting region of these radiations. We also obtain information on energetic protons in this flare by using gamma-ray lines. From the electron spectrum, the proton-to-electron ratio, and the time dependences of the microwave emission, the 2.2 MeV line and the gamma-ray continuum, we conclude that in large solar flares relativistic electrons and energetic nuclei are accelerated by a mechanism which is different from the mechanism which accelerates 100 keV electrons in flares.Research supported by NASA Grant 21-002-316 at the University of Maryland, College Park.  相似文献

A detailed review of nuclear processes and particle acceleration in solar flares has been completed recently (Ramaty and Murphy, 1987). Included in this review were a comprehensive discussion of the theory of gamma-ray and neutron production, as well as the results of comparisons of calculations with gamma-ray, neutron and charged-particle observations of solar flares. The implications of these comparisons on particle energy spectra, total numbers, anisotropies and electron-to-proton ratios, as well as on acceleration mechanisms and the interaction site were also discussed. In addition, elemental and isotopic abundances of the ambient gas, derived from gamma-ray observations, were compared to abundances obtained from observations of escaping accelerated particles and other sources. The present paper is a synopsis of this review  相似文献
