A new method which produces energy from the ocean by utilizing the density difference of water, by means of a “chimney effect”, is proposed. Density difference of water in the ocean occurs in two ways, namely differences of consistency and water temperature. For instance, fresh river and melting floes and icebergs are pointed out as some origins of the former, while thermal effects of volcanoes and hot springs may account for the latter. Furthermore, sunlight power transmitted into the sea through glass fibre power lines can be an artificial source in the latter case.This paper concentrates on regions near estuaries where low density river water can be piped into the high density ocean. An analysis estimates that the proposed method extracts energy of several thousands or more kW in the above case. 相似文献

Habitability is defined as an ability of an organism to inhabit different environments. Habitability of organisms, however, cannot be inferred from analyses such as a whole genome or community structures. A recently developed database, the MetaMetaDB, gives us information from what kind of environments one particular 16S rRNA sequence data has ever been obtained, and thus enables us to infer the habitability of the bacterium in question. In order to check the applicability of this database to study the habitability of aquatic bacteria, samples collected at two Naka River stations, one estuarine station from Naka River Estuary, two coastal stations at Oarai in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan and one station in the Kuroshio Current of the western North Pacific were examined. The phylotypes were tracked against the MetaMetaDB and it was reasonably found that the low-salinity stations were dominated by sequences with “freshwater and groundwater”, “human” and “wastewater” habitat identities, while the high-salinity stations were dominated by those with a “marine” identity. The phylotypes of low-salinity stations with a particular habitat identity were absent or rare in the high-salinity stations and vice versa. The MetaMetaDB also showed that sequences of Cyanobacteria or related phylogenetic groups may be present in the human gut, as well as the probable distribution of the relatives (ancestors/descendants/siblings) of some bacteria. These overall findings proved that the MetaMetaDB is useful as a new tool to infer microbial habitability and it gives us new information on the possible origin and ecology of microorganisms in the environments. 相似文献

Conventional stratigraphic correlations are based on similarity of lithology, order of superposition, marker bed, unconformity, grade of metamorphism, fossil content and geochronology of the rock units. The Gondwana strata have been correlated referring to the above mentioned criteria. In the present work, the Talchir and Karharbari formations of two adjacent Gondwana basins separated by over 200 Km were examined with respect to their palaeocurrent directions. The study suggests that the palaeocurrent populations of different formations in both the basins are statistically dissimilar, this is because, both are stratigraphically distinct in order of superposition and thus are not correlatable. On the other hand, the palaeocurrent populations of the same formation in both the basins are statistically similar and stratigraphically correlatable. It is suggested that the similarity of palaeocurrent can be regarded as a criterion for stratigraphic correlation at least in local and regional scale. 相似文献

A multi-spectral classification scheme is proposed to identify water with red tide(s) using satellite ocean color imagery
obtained by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS). The study area was the eastern Seto Inland Sea in Japan,
where serious red tides frequently occur. “Background Ocean Colors” (BOCs hereafter), or colors of water around a red tide
or those of the water before/after a red tide, are calculated as the monthly climatological average of normalized water-leaving
radiances (nLw) with 0.01 degree spatial resolution with SeaWiFS imagery. Criteria for detecting red-tide pixels are established
from analyses of characteristics of the nLws (in the 443, 490, 510, and 555 nm bands) anomalies from BOCs and the nLw spectra
together with the red-tide records in Osaka Bay. The proposed scheme can efficiently indicate the presence or absence of red
tides for independent match-ups with 83% accuracy. Additional validations of specific events indicate that the algorithm performed
well in the study area. These results suggest that the scheme is appropriate to detect red tides in the optically complex

Boron abundances and isotopic ratios of olivine grains on Itokawa returned by the Hayabusa spacecraft 下载免费PDF全文
We report the B abundances and isotopic ratios of two olivine grains from the S‐type asteroid Itokawa sampled by the Hayabusa spacecraft. Olivine grains from the Dar al Gani (DaG) 989 LL6 chondrite were used as a reference. Since we analyzed polished thin sections in both cases, we expect the contribution from the solar wind B (rich in 10B) to be minimal because the solar wind was implanted only within very thin layers of the grain surface. The Itokawa and DaG 989 olivine grains have homogeneous B abundances (~400 ppb) and 11B/10B ratios compatible with the terrestrial standard and bulk chondrites. The observed homogeneous B abundances and isotopic ratios of the Itokawa olivine grains are likely the result of thermal metamorphism which occurred in the parent asteroid of Itokawa, which had a similar composition as LL chondrites. The chondritic B isotopic ratios of the Itokawa samples suggest that they contain little cosmogenic B (from cosmic‐ray spallation reactions) rich in 10B. This observation is consistent with the short cosmic‐ray exposure ages of Itokawa samples inferred from the small concentrations of cosmogenic 21Ne. If other Itokawa samples have little cosmogenic B as well, the enrichment in 10B found previously on the surface of another Itokawa particle (as opposed to the bulk grain study here) may be attributed to implanted solar wind B. 相似文献

Correlated accretion ages and ε54Cr of meteorite parent bodies and the evolution of the solar nebula
We look at the relationship between the value of ε54Cr in bulk meteorites and the time (after calcium‐aluminum‐rich inclusion, CAI) when their parent bodies accreted. To obtain accretion ages of chondrite parent bodies, we estimated the maximum temperature reached in the insulated interior of each parent body, and estimated the initial 26Al/27Al for this temperature to be achieved. This initial 26Al/27Al corresponds to the time (after CAI formation) when cold accretion of the parent body would have occurred, assuming 26Al/27Al throughout the solar system began with the canonical value of 5.2 × 10?5. In cases of iron meteorite parent bodies, achondrite parent bodies, and carbonaceous chondrite parent bodies, we use published isotopic ages of events (such as core formation, magma crystallization, and growth of secondary minerals) in each body's history to obtain the probable time of accretion. We find that ε54Cr correlates with accretion age: the oldest accretion ages (1 ± 0.5 Ma) are for iron and certain other differentiated meteorites with ε54Cr of ?0.75 ± 0.5, and the youngest ages (3.5 ± 0.5 Ma) are for hydrated carbonaceous chondrites with ε54Cr values of 1.5 ± 0.5. Despite some outliers (notably Northwest Africa [NWA] 011 and Tafassasset), we feel that the correlation is significant and we suggest that it resulted from late, localized injection of dust with extremely high ε54Cr. 相似文献

We studied 14 presolar SiC mainstream grains for C‐, Si‐, and S‐isotopic compositions and S elemental abundances. Ten grains have low levels of S contamination and CI chondrite‐normalized S/Si ratios between 2 × 10?5 and 2 × 10?4. All grains have S‐isotopic compositions compatible within 2σ of solar values. Their mean S isotope composition deviates from solar by at most a few percent, and is consistent with values observed for the carbon star IRC+10216, believed to be a representative source star of the grains, and the interstellar medium. The isotopic data are also consistent with stellar model predictions of low‐mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. In a δ33S versus δ34S plot the data fit along a line with a slope of 1.8 ± 0.7, suggesting imprints from galactic chemical evolution. The observed S abundances are lower than expected from equilibrium condensation of CaS in solid solution with SiC under pressure and temperature conditions inferred from the abundances of more refractory elements in SiC. Calcium to S abundance ratios are generally above unity, contrary to expectations for stoichiometric CaS solution in the grains, possibly due to condensation of CaC2 into SiC. We observed a correlation between Mg and S abundances suggesting solid solution of MgS in SiC. The low abundances of S in mainstream grains support the view that the significantly higher abundances of excess 32S found in some Type AB SiC grains are the result of in situ decay of radioactive 32Si from born‐again AGB stars that condensed into AB grains. 相似文献

Heavy mineral analysis has been carried out in the Barakar Formation of the Talchir Gondwana Bbasin, Orissa. The characteristic
heavy minerals are garnet, zircon, tourmaline, rutile, biotite, chlorite, pyroxenes, hornblende, staurolite, sillimanite,
apatite, epidote, sphene, spinel and siderite including opaques and leucoxene. These heavy minerals are divisible into four
groups on the basis of principal component analysis and suggest derivation of Barakar sediments from pegmatite, acid and basic
igneous as well as low- and high-rank metamorphic rocks lying to the south of the Talchir Gondwana Basin. Though the heavy
mineral suites of all the sandstone samples are by and large similar, differences have been noticed in the frequencies of
many heavy minerals in vertical succession. Cyclic nature and vertical fluctuation of heavy mineral frequencies can be ascribed
to variation of the relief of the source area, sudden release of some of the minerals in the source region and/or existence
of favourable geochemical condition to escape partial dissolution. 相似文献
