The accuracy of the computed stress distribution near the free surface of vertical slopes was evaluated in this study as a function of the element size, including aspect ratio. To accomplish this objective, a parametric study was carried out comparing stresses computed using the finite element method (FEM) to those obtained from a physical model composed of photoelastic material. The results of the study indicate a reasonable agreement between a gelatin model and the FEM model for shear stresses, and an overall good agreement between the two models for the principal stresses. For stresses along the top of the slope, the height of the element tends to be more important than width or aspect ratio, at least for aspect ratios up to 4. In all cases, the greatest difference between the two models occurs in the vicinity of the slope. Specifically, if H is defined as the slope height, an element height of H/10 appears to be adequate for the study of stresses deep within the slope, such as for typical embankment analyses. However, for cases where tensile stresses in the vicinity of the slope face which are critical, such as for the stability analysis of steep slopes, element heights as small as H/32, or higher‐order elements, are necessary. Since the 1997 local ban on ocean dumping of dredged sediments, the States of New York and New Jersey have pursued a policy of environmentally sound solutions to the management of dredged material, including beneficial use of stabilized dredged material (SDM) in transportation applications. A pilot study was initiated in 1998 to evaluate the use of SDM in the construction of highway embankments. Utilizing 80,000 cubic yards of dredged material, two embankments were constructed from SDM on a commercial development area adjacent to the Harbor. Geotechnical properties and handling of SDM were evaluated both during and one year post - construction. This article presents the evaluation of the embankments themselves, including constructability and performance. The results demonstrate that SDM satisfies most of the geotechnical criteria for fill construction, except those for durability, requiring proper coverage and protection similar to that provided for fills constructed on cohesive soils. This same characteristic precludes long term stockpiling of SDM prior to final placement, limiting applications to those that have schedules overlapping with dredging projects. Increased costs for the use of SDM can be as high as $8 per cubic yard over traditional fills; however, this cost may be recouped through management fees collected from dredging projects.  相似文献

为研究粉质黏土堤防漫溢溃决破坏过程及其对水流要素和土体性质的响应规律,以河道流量、筑堤土体含水率和孔隙率为变量,在弯道水槽中开展了9组堤防漫溢溃决概化试验.通过试验发现,粉质黏土堤漫溢溃决溃口发展过程可分为垂向侵蚀和横向扩宽两个阶段,垂向侵蚀阶段以"陡坎"后退为主要形式;筑堤土体含水率与孔隙率不仅影响了溃口垂向侵蚀以及横向扩宽速度,而且决定了溃口最终形态,河道流量主要影响堤防溃口的横向扩宽速度;溃口处流速以及下游水位变化受溃口高度的制约.拟合得到土体黏聚力与土体含水率、孔隙率的相关关系式;通过试验数据提出了由土体黏聚力和水流参数表达的"陡坎"侵蚀后退速度计算公式,证明具有一定合理性.  相似文献

Creep settlements are the main cause of deterioration of road pavement and impervious elements of dams, and therefore a method to calculate them is needed. Viscoelastic models (e.g. the standard linear solid) have been chosen to represent the creep of granular materials (Figure 1). Finite element calculations show that quasi‐oedometric conditions exist near the centre of embankments. Explicit expressions for one‐dimensional viscoelastic settlements of an embankment during and after construction have been obtained for any loading law and drawn for a linear load. The three viscoelastic parameters, Eo, Rc and Tr can be determined through laboratory or field testing, and the results can be adjusted by using settlement records. In 1986, the Malaysian Highway Authority constructed a series of trial embankments on the Muar Plain (soft marine clay) with the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of various ground improvement techniques. This study investigates the effect of two such ground improvement schemes: (a) preloading of foundation with surface geogrids and synthetic vertical drains and (b) sand compaction piles. The paper is focused on the finite element analysis of settlements and lateral displacements of the soft foundation. In scheme (a), the numerical predictions are compared with the field measurements. In scheme (b), only the numerical analysis is presented and discussed in the absence of reliable measurements due to the malfunctioning of the electronic extensometer and inclinometer system during embankment construction. The current analysis employs critical state soil mechanics, and the deformations are predicted on the basis of the fully coupled (Biot) consolidation model. The vertical drain pattern is converted to equivalent drain walls to enable plane strain modelling, and the geogrids are simulated by linear interface slip elements. The effect of sand compaction piles is investigated considering both ideal drains and non-ideal drains, as well as varying the pile stiffness. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A series of highly instrumented dynamic centrifuge model tests were performed to investigate the potential of using sheet-pile walls for mitigating the adverse effects of foundation liquefaction on overlying highway embankments. The response of a prototype 4.5 m high cohesive highway embankment supported on a 6 m thick loose saturated sand layer was analyzed under dynamic base excitation conditions. In a series of four separate model tests, this embankment-foundation system was studied first without, and then with the following three different liquefaction countermeasure techniques, all involving sheet-piles: (a) sheet-pile extending to the foundation surface, (b) sheet-pile with toe area gravel surcharge berm, and (c) sheet-pile with toe area gravel surcharge berm extending into the foundation. Model response was monitored by numerous accelerometers, pore pressure transducers, and displacement gages. The underlying mechanism and effectiveness of each countermeasure is discussed based on the recorded dynamic response. All of the implemented countermeasures were found to significantly reduce embankment deformations. Particularly in the case of the sheet-pile with toe area gravel berm, cracking and lateral spreading of the embankment were practically eliminated. Channel planform change was analysed using a variety of data-sources for the medium-term (>25 years and <250 years) and short-term (<25 years) on a reach of the Rivers Tay and Tummel, Scotland. Map data were input into a Geographic Information System (GIS) and used to determine planform characteristics and changes in width, braiding index and sinuosity for the study reach between 1755 and 1976. Aerial photographs were utilised to determine the more recent changes that had taken place between 1971 and 1994. The analysis showed that significant changes had occurred over the medium term with a mean reduction in channel width of 34% for this period. These changes are comparable to those found in studies of similar European rivers for this period. Changes determined for the short-term displayed a continuance of this trend at a comparable rate of change. An analysis of flood frequency and magnitude, precipitation and discharge records for both periods does not show an associated decrease and therefore does not reflect the changes in channel planform. Evidence points towards flood embankment construction in the mid-1800s as the initial cause of channel change for the study reach which was later exacerbated by flow regulation. Incision and the subsequent stabilisation of lateral and mid-channel gravel bars by vegetation succession has resulted in an overall increase in the stability of the study reach which has persisted even where the embankments have fallen into disrepair.  相似文献

A translational failure of a highway embankment constructed on sloping ground may occur either in the mode of overall instability or in the mode of local instability. The stability analysis of the first mode is based on the assumption that the whole cross-section of the embankment will slide along the inclined base surface, whilst the second mode is based on the assumption of Rankine's active state of stress. In this paper the determination of the prevalent mode of failure – overall or local – is provided via a chart derived from force polygon analysis, with the dimensionless parameter, c′/γH, and the effective friction angle, φ′, as its axes. Furthermore, the determination of the most probable failure plane in the cross-section of the embankment is attempted and additionally the role of the cohesion in the stability is discussed. Finally, an estimation of the amplitude of failure at the road surface in the case of local instability is given. A confirmation of the aforementioned was achieved through case studies of highway embankments that have failed as a consequence of water infiltration and the development of high pore water pressures. A comparison between the local and the respective overall instability safety factor is given.  相似文献

基于修正拉格朗日(U.L)描述下的大变形固结理论和考虑相变作用的温度场得到大变形融化固结理论,对不同路堤高度下填土路基温度场和融沉变形进行研究. 结果表明:高温冻土区合理高度的路堤在5~10 a内使冻土上限略微抬升,但冻土有明显升温. 冻土上限在未来的5~10 a后会急剧下降,且路堤高度越小,下降量越大. 与小变形融化固结理论相比,大变形融化固结理论预测高含量冻土融沉变形的精度更高. 融沉量与路堤高度成正比,且随着时间的增长,融沉变形呈阶梯型发展,路堤越高,阶梯现象越显著. 定义融沉量与路堤高度之比为沉降比,研究发现路堤越低,其沉降比越大,且随时间线性增长. 沉降比是冻土融深增量的单值函数,与路堤高度无关,通过沉降比函数可以快速而实用的求出融沉变形量.  相似文献
