The complexity of formulations for the hydromechanical coupled mechanics of porous media is typically minimised by simplifying assumptions such as neglecting the effect of inertia terms. For example, three formulations commonly employed to model practical problems are classified as fully dynamic, simplified dynamic and quasi‐static. Thus, depending on the porous media conditions, each formulation will have advantages and limitations. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of these limitations when solving one‐dimensional fully saturated porous media problems in addition to a new solution that considers a more general loading situation. A phase diagram is developed to assist on the selection of which formulation is more appropriate and convenient regarding particular cases of porosity and hydraulic conductivity values. Non‐dimensional formulations are proposed to achieve this goal. Results using the analytical solutions are compared against numerical values obtained with the finite element method, and the effect of porosity is investigated. Benthic faunal structure and hydrocarbon concentrations in sediments were examined annually for 10 years (1989-1998) in Port Valdez, Alaska, where a near-bottom permitted discharge of treated tanker ballast waters containing residual petroleum has occurred since 1977. Measured concentrations of hydrocarbons in sediments near the discharge showed detectable increases in concentration, but on only one occasion were these increases either to levels exceeding ecotoxicological thresholds (Effects-Range Low, ER-L) or associated with alterations in the benthic community. Changes in faunal structure indicating disturbance were observed at one station near the discharge from 1995 to 1997 and were apparent as increased numbers of opportunistic taxa and anomalous trends in abundance and diversity. Minimum-effect (ME) hypotheses provided evidence of negligible to small effects on benthic infauna from disposal of treated ballast water. ME hypotheses have the potential to assist both researchers and managers by providing a tool to relate scientific results to ecological importance and decision criteria.  相似文献

The geography of violence in Mexico has changed in recent years because of an explosive increase in regional homicide rates since 2006. This study relies on spatial statistical data analysis to address the issue of convergence in homicide victim rates across Mexican municipalities from 2001 to 2010. Based on the results of spatial panel modeling, we conclude that despite strong regional disparities in murders, municipal-level homicide growth rates display a pattern of convergence with spatial interaction features. This convergent pattern is gender-specific; the homicide growth rates for females show stronger convergence than those for males when local and regional factors are not considered. We postulate that homicide growth dynamics among females more closely follow the predictions of the “modernization hypothesis” than do the dynamics among males. This finding suggests that violence (specifically, homicides) against women in Mexico is driven by underlying factors other than short-term factors, such as drug cartel dynamics, and regional factors, such as local institutions and governments. The data might support the long-established feminist hypothesis that contends that violence against women follows specific dynamics that are different from the dynamics of violence against men.  相似文献

Basic flow relationships have previously been seen to be insufficient to explain the self‐adjusting mechanism of alluvial channels and as a consequence extremal hypotheses have been incorporated into the analyses. In contrast, this study finds that by introducing a channel form factor (width/depth ratio), the self‐adjusting mechanism of alluvial channels can be illustrated directly with the basic flow relations of continuity, resistance and sediment transport. Natural channel flow is able to reach an optimum state (Maximum Flow Efficiency (MFE), defined as the maximum sediment transporting capacity per unit available stream power) with regard to the adjustment of channel form such that rivers exhibit regular hydraulic geometry relations at dominant or bankfull stage. Within the context of MFE, this study offers support for the use of the concepts of maximum sediment transporting capacity (MSTC) and minimum stream power (MSP). Furthermore, this study indicates that the principle of least action is able to provide a physical explanation for the existence of MFE, MSTC and MSP. We estimated the survival probability of breeding European storm petrels before, during and after a severe oil-spill. We hypothesized that petrels might have deserted the breeding colony to maximize their own survival probability and we expected no major change on adult survival probabilities as a consequence of the spill. We used an information-theoretical approach and multi-model inference to assess the strength of the evidence in favour of different hypotheses.Evidence contained in the data clearly supported the non-effect of the spill on adult survival hypothesis while punctual impact of the spill on survival and expanded (3 years) impact alternatives received less support. The effect size of the spill on averaged survival estimates was negligible in every case. We suggest that petrels minimized the impact of acute pollution by not investing in reproduction. We suggest that short-medium term management actions after oil-spills and similar catastrophes should focus on ecosystem restoration.  相似文献

The stability criterion of maximum flow efficiency (MFE) has previously been found inherent in typical alluvial channel flow relationships, and this study investigates the general nature of this criterion using a wider range of flow resistance and bedload transport formulae. For straight alluvial channels, in which the effect of sediment sorting is insignificant, our detailed mathematical analysis demonstrates that a flow efficiency factor ε occurs generally as the ratio of sediment (bedload) discharge Qs to stream power Ω (γQS) in the form of . When ε is maximized (i.e. Qs is maximized or Ω is minimized), maximally efficient straight channel geometries derived from most flow resistance and bedload transport formulae are found compatible with observed bankfull hydraulic geometry relations. This study provides support for the use of the criteria of MFE, maximum sediment transporting capacity and minimum stream power for understanding the operation of alluvial rivers, and also addresses limitations to the direct application of its findings.  Geoid determination by Stokes's formula requires a complete knowledge of the topographical mass density distribution in order to perform gravity reductions to the geoid boundary. However, deeper masses are also of interest, in order to produce a smooth field of gravity anomalies which will improve results from interpolation procedures. Until now, in most cases a constant mass density has been considered, which is a very rough approximation of reality. The influence on the geoid height coming from different mass density hypotheses given by the isostatic models of Pratt/Hayford, Airy/Heiskanen and Vening Meinesz is studied. Apart from a constant mass density value, additional density information deduced from geological maps and thick sedimentary layers is considered. An overview of how mass density distributions act within Stokes's theory is given. The isostatic models are considered in spherical and planar approximation, as well as with constant and lateral variable mass density of the topographical and deeper masses. Numerical results in a test area in south-west Germany show that the differences in the geoid height due to different density hypotheses can reach a magnitude of more than 1 decimetre, which is not negligible in a precise geoid determination with centimetre accuracy. Applications of Kolmogorov's universal equilibrium hypothesis and the Taylor transform to velocity spectra derived from measurements within the low frequency portion of the atmospheric surface layer (ASL) inertial subrange are examined. The measured ratios of lateral to longitudinal velocity component spectra exhibit considerable scatter, but suggest convergence towards 1.0 rather than towards the 4/3 expected from theory. Shear and buoyancy introduce anisotropy to the inertial subrange, thereby contributing to the observed scatter. The apparent discrepancy between the 4/3 velocity component spectrum ratio expected from theory and the measurements could arise as a consequence of the processing used to produce spectra. These processing effects must be considered from the perspective of the propagating eddy. Spectral averaging used with sonic anemometer data is done over time periods that are large with respect to inertial subrange eddy correlation decay times. This averaging causes energy from larger scale eddies to appear as `local convection' that dominates the Taylor transform. Spectrum ratio convergence and cospectra approaching zero are necessary, but not sufficient, conditions for onset of local isotropy. Measurements of spectrum ratios and cospectra over the entire inertial subrange are needed to determine whether or not local isotropy might occur within the ASL.  相似文献

The energy based least action principle (LAP) has proven to be very successful for explaining natural phenomena in both classical and modern physics. This paper briefly reviews its historical development and details how, in three ways, it governs the behaviour and stability of alluvial rivers. First, the LAP embodies the special stationary equilibrium state of motion and so its incorporation with the principle of energy conservation explains why so many optimizing hypotheses have been proposed in fluvial geomorphology. Second, the variational approach underlying the LAP provides a more straightforward and simpler fuzzy‐object orientated method for solving river regime problems than do the various complex Newtonian formulations. Third, it is shown that in fluvial systems with surplus energy the surplus can be expended with slope and/or channel geometry adjustments, with the degree of channel geometry adjustment quantified by the dimensionless numbers F for depth dominated adjustment and H for width/depth dominated adjustment. Different planforms are preferred at different energy levels, with H providing a quantitative measure of the flow's efficiency for moving sediment. In rivers with insufficient energy, the interactions of endogenous and exogenous factors are shown to be capable, in certain circumstances, of achieving a stationary equilibrium condition which acts as the attractor state.
