The new expressions for H2O diffusion not only reproduce our own data, but also match data in literature from different laboratories and using different methods, indicating good inter-laboratory and multi-method consistency. Measurement of fluid contents and wetting front profiles by real-time neutron radiography

Few methods exist for measuring rapidly changing fluid contents at the pore scale that simultaneously allow whole flow field visualization. We present a method for using real-time neutron radiography to measure rapidly changing moisture profiles in porous media. The imaging technique monitors the attenuation of a thermal neutron beam as it traverses a flow field and provides measurements every 30 ms with an image area >410 cm2 and a spatial resolution 0.05 cm. The technique is illustrated by measuring the variation in moisture content across a wetting front moving at constant velocity through SiO2 sand. The relative contributions of the hydraulic conductivity and diffusivity terms in Richards' equation to the total fluid flux within the wetting front region were also measured. The diffusivity was found to rise from zero to a peak value within the wetting front region before falling off while the conductivity was found to rise monotonically. The reliability of the technique was checked via mass balance.  相似文献

Bentonite clay is a micro-inhomogeneous material, which consists of clay minerals (mainly montmorillonite), macro-grains (mainly quartz), water, air and others. Properties of the saturated bentonite clay are essentially characterized by the montmorillonite and water (i.e. montmorillonite hydrate). We analyze the molecular behavior of sodium montmorillonite hydrate Na1/3Al2[Si11/3Al1/3]O10(OH)2·nH2O by applying a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. And by using the MD results we calculate the swelling property of the montmorillonite hydrate, and compare with an experimental result. Next, by using the same MD procedure we treat a montmorillonite mineral with a large number of external water molecules to check the properties of the water. Here we treat pure- and salt-water. Then we calculate the diffusivity and viscosity of water molecules and Na+ and Cl ions.

For extending the microscopic characteristics of constituent materials to a macroscopic seepage behavior of the micro-inhomogeneous material we apply a homogenization analysis (HA). That is, starting with the Navier–Stokes equation with distributed viscosity that is calculated by the former MD procedure we determine macroscopic permeability characteristics of bentonite for both cases of pure- and salt-water. Then, by using the permeability property we calculate long-term consolidation behavior of buffering clay, which is planed to be used for high-level radioactive waste (HLRW) management. Watershed development programmes provide an opportunity for sustainable management strategies, although currently, they remain largely supply-side mechanisms of water resources development. Hydrogeological conditions, community participation and status of groundwater usage are important in evolving strategies on demand-side groundwater management.Neemkheda aquifer is a typical low-storage, low-hydraulic conductivity aquifer from a watershed in the dryland regions of Madhya Pradesh State of central India. A shallow unconfined aquifer, it consists of an upper coarse, calcareous sandstone unit underlain by a fine-grained sandstone unit. A well commune of seven wells is poised to test the concept of joint groundwater management, wherein wells are mechanisms of tapping a common water source, the Neemkheda aquifer.The strategy for systematic groundwater management in the Neemkheda well commune is based upon the relationship between Transmissivity (T) and Storage coefficient (S), i.e. aquifer diffusivity, and its variation within the aquifer. Wells within a high diffusivity domain tend to dewater more quickly than wells within a low diffusivity domain. A well-use schedule during the dry season, based upon aquifer diffusivity forms the basis of the groundwater management concept. The distribution of local aquifer diffusivities governs the relationship between local and regional aquifer depletion times and forms the basis of the groundwater management exercise being proposed for the Neemkheda aquifer.
Resumen Los programas de desarrollo de una cuenca hídrica son una oportunidad para el uso de estrategias de gestión sostenible, aunque hoy en día estas siguen siendo principalmente mecanismos para el desarrollo de recursos hídricos con énfasis en la oferta. Las condiciones hidrogeológicas, la participación comunitaria y la condición de utilización del agua subterránea, son importantes en el desarrollo de estrategias para la gestión del agua subterránea, desde el punto de vista de la demanda.El acuífero de Neemkheda es un acuífero típico de almacenamiento bajo y conductividad hidráulica baja, perteneciente a una cuenca hídrica ubicada en las regiones secas del Estado de Madhya Pradesh, en la parte central de India. Un acuífero de tipo libre, somero, formado por una unidad superior de arenisca calcárea de grano grueso, subyacida por una unidad de arenisca de grano fino.Un campo de pozos comunitario compuesto por siete pozos, pone a prueba el concepto de gestión conjunta del agua subterránea, dentro del cual los pozos son mecanismos para usar una fuente de agua común: El acuífero de Neemkheda.La estrategia usada para la gestión sistemática del agua subterránea, en el campo de pozos comunitario de Neemkheda, se basa en la relación existente entre Transmisividad (T) y Coeficiente de Almacenamiento (S), es decir en la Difusividad del Acuífero y en su variación observada dentro del mismo acuífero. Los pozos cuya difusividad esta dentro de un rango alto, tienden a experimentar un descenso en su nivel mas rápidamente que aquellos pozos con una difusividad baja. El concepto de gestión de agua subterránea se basa en un programa especial de operación para cada pozo durante la estación seca, el cual a su vez se basa en la difusividad del acuífero. La distribución de difusividades locales del acuífero rige las relaciones entre las épocas de descensos de nivel en el acuífero a escala regional y local, y además constituyen la base del ejercicio de la gestión del agua subterránea que se esta proponiendo para el acuífero de Neemkheda.

Résumé Les programmes de développement des bassins versants offrent une occasion de développer des stratégies pour une gestion durable, bien qu à présent elles restent en grande mesure le terme source dans le mécanisme de développement de la ressource en eau. Les conditions hydrogéologiques, la participation de la communauté et lusage des eaux souterraines sont importants pour le terme demande dans les stratégies de gestion des eaux souterraines. Laquifère de Neemkheda presents des caractéristiques typiques pour un bassin versant dans les régions arides de létat Madhya Pradesh de lInde centrale en ce qui concerne les faible valeurs de la conductivité hydraulique et du coéfficient demmagasinement. Il sagit dun aquifère phrèatique dont la partie supérieure est constitué par des grès calcaire qui restent sur des grés plus fins. Afin dessayer le concept de gestion integrée, on a réalisé dans laquifère de Neemkheda un captage ayant sept forages qui forment la ressource en eau communale. La stratégie de la gestion systématique du captage est basée sur la relation entre la transmissivité (T), le coéfficient demmagasinement (S), donc la diffusivité hydraulique ainsi que sa variation spatiale. Les puits forés dans les zones à grande diffusivité tendent à sassècher plus vite que ceux creusés dans des zones à faible diffusivité. Le concept de la gestion des eaux souterraines est donc basé sur la distribution spatiale des diffusivités. À partir de ce concept on a développé un programme dexploitation des forages pendant les saisons sèches. La relation entre les temps d épuissment locaux et régionaux est determiné par la distribution spatiale de la diffusivitée et forme la base de lexercice sur la gestion des eaux proposée pour laquifère de Neemkheda.

Development of thoughts on tracer transport mechanisms in the stratosphere which lead to new approaches to two-dimensional modeling of the tracer problem is reviewed.Three-dimensional motions of individual air parcels affected by a planetary wave are investigated theoretically, treating a steady, upward propagating wave in a uniform flow. It is shown that trajectories of air parcels are of elliptical form when projected onto the meridional plane and that they have no mean meridional or vertical motion, even though the usual zonal Eulerian-mean vertical motion exists. The origin of the difference between the mean air parcel motion and the Eulerian-mean motion is discussed.On the basis of the knowledge of air parcel motion, two approaches to two-dimensional modeling are considered. The generalized Lagrangian mean motion (quasi-zonal weighted mean taken over a meandering material tube), recently introduced by Andrews and McIntyre, is identical with the mean motion of an air parcel in a steady state. Such a mean meridional circulation may be used for advecting a tracer in the meridional plane in a two-dimensional model. The transport effect is represented solely by the advection and an eddy transport does not appear in this scheme, to a first approximation.The finding that trajectories of air parcels are elliptical necessitates a reexamination of the Reed-German eddy diffusivity currently used in two-dimensional chemical-dynamical models. By applying a mixing length type hypothesis, we derive an eddy diffusivity formula for use in Eulerian-mean calculations, which, in the case of a conservative tracer is dominated by an anti-symmetric tensor. The eddy transport due to this anti-symmetric tensor diffusivity is of advective type (not diffusive) and has the effect of taking the Stoke drift effect into account, when used in the usual Eulerian-mean formulation.  相似文献

A simple closure scheme for nocturnal stratocumulus is proposed. The scheme is formulated in conserved variables. Cloud fraction and cloud water amount are diagnosed assuming a top-hat distribution for total water. Conversion of cloud water into rain water is parameterized in terms of cloud water and the incoming rain flux. Turbulence transport in the cloud layer is accounted for by a first-order vertical diffusion scheme with a profile-type diffusivity. The length scale corresponds to the thickness of the cloud layer. The turbulent velocity scale is directly related to the long wave radiative flux divergence in the cloud. Entrainment at cloud top is implicitly treated by extending the in-cloud mixing profile slightly beyond cloud top. The excess height is derived from the buoyancy frequency at cloud top and a radiative–convective velocity scale. The scheme is capable of simulating realistic profiles of the conserved variables and cloud parameters for a case of nocturnal stratocumulus prepared on the basis of ASTEX data.  相似文献

Water diffusion in silicate melts is important for understanding bubble growth in magma, magma degassing and eruption dynamics of volcanos. Previous studies have made significant progress on water diffusion in silicate melts, especially rhyolitic melt. However, the pressure dependence of H2O diffusion is not constrained satisfactorily. We investigated H2O diffusion in rhyolitic melt at 0.95–1.9 GPa and 407–1629 °C, and 0.2–5.2 wt.% total water (H2Ot) content with the diffusion-couple method in a piston-cylinder apparatus. Compared to previous data at 0.1–500 MPa, H2O diffusivity is smaller at higher pressures, indicating a negative pressure effect. This pressure effect is more pronounced at low temperatures. Assuming H2O diffusion in rhyolitic melt is controlled by the mobility of molecular H2O (H2Om), the diffusivity of H2Om (DH2Om) at H2Ot ≤ 7.7 wt.%, 403–1629 °C, and ≤ 1.9 GPa is given by
