Two Early Cretaceous Burmese amber cockroaches contained protists related to mutualistic flagellates occurring in extant Cryptocercus cockroaches and lower termites. The fossil protists are described as Devescovites proteus Poinar n. gen., n. sp. (Parabasalia: Trichomonadida: Devescovinidae), Paleotrichomones burmanicus Poinar n. gen., n. sp. (Parabasalia: Trichomonida), Burmanymphus cretacea Poinar n. gen., n. sp. (Hypermastigia: Trichonymphida: Burmanymphidae n. fam.) and Oxymonas gigantea Poinar, n. sp. Additional putative protists are also illustrated. Evolutionary implications of this discovery are discussed.  相似文献

The angiosperm pollen record from the Anfiteatro de Ticó and Punta del Barco formations (Baqueró Group) is reported. The relevance of these floras is that they are accurately dated as late Aptian, and one of the oldest floras southern South America with fossil angiosperms. Twelve samples were studied, showing Clavatipollenites and Retimonocolpites as dominant types. A new species, Jushingipollis ticoensis sp. nov., is proposed. A doubtful angiosperm pollen grain, Lethomasites sp., is also identified and described. A multivariate analysis of similarities between different Early Cretaceous angiosperm pollen assemblages suggests that the Baqueró Group assemblages have great similarities with other coeval units from Argentina, Australia and United States, which were located in a similar paleolatitude.  相似文献

Two metamorphic complexes of the Yenisei Ridge with contrasting composition are analyzed to unravel their tectonothermal evolution and geodynamic processes during the Riphean geologic history of the area. The structural, mineralogical, petrological, geochemical and geochronological data are used to distinguish two stages of the evolution with different ages, thermodynamic regimes, and metamorphic field gradients. Reaction textures, chemical zoning in minerals, shapes of the P-T paths, and isotope dates provide convincing evidence for a poly metamorphic history of the region. The first stage is marked by the formation of the ~ 970 Ma low-pressure zoned And-Sil rocks (P = 3.9-5.1 kbar, T = 510–640 °C) of the Teya aureole and a high metamorphic field gradient with dT/dH = 25–35 °C/km typical of many orogenic belts. At the second stage, these rocks experienced Late Riphean (853–849 Ma) collisional medium-pressure metamorphism of the kyanite-sillimanite type (P = 5.7-7.2 kbar, T = 660–700 °C) and a low metamorphic field gradient with dT/dH < 12 °C/km. This metamorphic event was almost coeval with the Late Riphean (862 Ma) contact metamorphism in the vicinity of the granitic plutons, which was accompanied by a high metamorphic field gradient with dT/dH > 100 °C/km. At the first stage, the deepest blocks of the Garevka complex in the vicinity of the Yenisei regional shear zone underwent high-pressure amphibolite-facies metamorphism within a narrow range of P = 7.1-8.7 kbar and T = 580–630 °C, suggesting the burial of rocks to mid-crustal depths at a metamorphic field gradient with dT/dH ~ 20–25 °C/km. At the second stage, these rocks experienced the Late Riphean (900–850 Ma) syn-exhumation dynamometamorphism under epidote-amphibolte facies conditions (P = 3.9-4.9 kbar, T = 460–550 °C) and a low gradient with dT/dH < 10 °C/km accompanied by the formation of blastomylonitic complexes in shear zones. All these deformation and metamorphic events identified on the western margin of the Siberian craton are correlated with the final episodes of the Late Grenville orogeny and provide supporting evidence for a close spatial connection between Siberia and Laurentia during early Neoproterozoic time, which is in good agreement with recent paleomagnetic reconstuctions.  相似文献

New specimens of the enigmatic Ediacara-type fossil Palaeopascichnus have been identified from the upper part of the Neoproterozoic Ranford Formation in the Kimberley region, northwest Australia. New material is morphologically similar to Palaeopascichnus and represents the largest species of this genus. They resemble the present-day xenophyophore protists in chamber morphology and growth patterns, supporting the interpretation that Palaeopascichnus is possibly a xenophyophore body fossil rather than a trace fossil. Stratigraphic correlation reveals that the new Palaeopascichnus specimens are preserved in the interglacial successions between the Landrigan/Marinoan and Egan/Ediacaran glaciations. If correlation with the early Ediacaran formations of South Australia is accepted, this represents the earliest known identifiable member of the Ediacara biota. New fossil record fills the evolutionary gap between the Cryogenian and Ediacaran animal assemblages and well-known Ediacaran biota. The new Palaeopascichnus specimens represent the first record of Ediacara-type fossils in Kimberley, and suggest the probability that additional Ediacaran fossils may be found in northwestern Australia.  相似文献

Pleistocene alluvium along Little Kettle Creek in east-central Georgia contains a unique record of vertebrate life in the Appalachian Piedmont during a colder phase of the late Quaternary. The small fauna includes fishes and the following mammals: Synaptomys cooperi, the southern bog lemming; Clethrionomys sp., a redback vole; Mammut americanum, the American mastodon; a mammoth, Mammuthus sp.; Odocoileus cf. virginianus, a deer; and Bison sp. Both Synaptomys and Clethrionomys are primarily boreal genera of rodents which today reach their southern limits at higher elevations in the Great Smoky Mountains about 175 km north of the fossil locality. The American mastodon is also commonly associated with Pleistocene spruce bogs in eastern North America. Catfish (Ictalurus (?) sp.) vertebrae from the deposit show well-defined annual rings in contrast with the weakly marked annuli produced by fish living in the same area today. The total aspect of the fauna is one of considerably lower temperatures than those prevailing in the Georgia Piedmont now. The joint occurrence of bison and proboscideans indicates an age no older and no younger than late Pleistocene (Rancholabrean) for the assemblage. Because no pollen was found in the sediments and there was insufficient organic matter present for 14C dating, no more precise age can yet be assigned to the fauna.  相似文献

Four legume fruits (Fabaceae) from the Siwalik sediments (middle Miocene to lower Pleistocene) of Darjeeling and Arunachal Pradesh of Eastern Himalaya are described here. One fossil fruit, Dalbergia prelatifolia sp. nov., is recovered from the lower part of the Siwalik succession (Gish Clay Formation of Sevok Group; middle to upper Miocene) of Darjeeling foothills. Mastertia neoassamica sp. nov. and Acacia miocatechuoides sp. nov. are collected from the lower part of the Siwalik succession (Dafla Formation; middle Miocene to upper Miocene), while Pongamia kathgodamensis Prasad is recovered from the upper part of the Siwalik succession (Kimin Formation; upper Pliocenelower Pleistocene) of Arunachal sub Himalaya. Their presence indicates a warm and humid tropical environment in the region during the Siwalik sedimentation.  相似文献

Only two crinoid faunas of Rhuddanian or early Aeronian age have been described hitherto, both from North America. A Rhuddanian pelmatozoan fauna from Haverfordwest, Dyfed, south-west Wales includes the cheirocrinid rhombiferan cystoid Homocystites? sp., plus the following crinoid species: the calceocrinid disparids Calceocrinus turnbulli sp. nov. and Calceocrinus? sp.; the dendrocrinid cladid Dendrocrinus? gasworksensis sp. nov.; the patelliocrinid monobathrid Macrostylocrinus? sp. indet.; columnals of the rhodocrinitid(?) diplobathrid Floricolumnus (col.) sp. cf. F. (col.) girvanensis Donovan and Clark; the rhodocrinitid diplobathrid Chaosocrinus ornatus sp. nov.; and two indeterminate crinoid species. At the familial level this fauna shows strong similarities with coeval, but more diverse, crinoid assemblages from North America, suggesting that endemism did not develop until later in the Silurian.  相似文献

A new fossil microbiota yielding eukaryotic Tappania is described from the Mesoproterozoic Kamo Group of the Central Angara Basin, Siberian Craton. The assemblage also includes Valeria, Satka, Lophosphaeridium, Pulvinosphaeridium, Miroedichia, Osculosphaera, Tasmanites, Obruchevella, Glomovertella, as well as branching and anastomosing filamentous microfossils of putative fungal affinities and peculiar short trichomes, that together substantially increase the biodiversity of the Tappania Association. Stratigraphic position and geochronological constraints indicate a relatively young Late Mesoproterozoic age of the Tappania-bearing sediments. There appears to be a continuity between the Tappania Association and the Neoproterozoic microbiota, the latter being firmly rooted in the Late Mesoproterozoic.  相似文献

There are ten known Lower Cretaceous localities for skeletal remains of choristoderes in Siberia (Russia). Choristoderan remains at all these localities are represented by isolated bones, usually by isolated vertebrae of Choristodera indet. Three choristoderan taxa in two geological units were identified: the non-neochoristodere Khurendukhosaurus sp. (possibly closely related to the long-necked Sino-Japanese hyphalosaurids) from the Murtoi Formation, Transbaikalia; cf. Khurendukhosaurus sp. and the “Shestakovo choristodere” with possible neochoristoderan affinities from the Ilek Formation, Western Siberia. All these three choristoderan taxa had a microanatomical organization of vertebrae similar to that of in advanced large neochoristoderes (vertebral centra with tight spongiosa). The Siberian fossil record includes the westernmost (Shestakovo locality, Ilek Formation) and the northernmost (Teete locality, the Sangarian Group) occurrences of the Early Cretaceous choristoderes in Asia. Like in other regions of Asia, Siberian localities are characterized by the absence of neosuchian crocodyliforms.  相似文献

Chemical mapping and in situ dating of U-Th-rich minerals in zoned garnets from gneisses of the Garevka metamorphic complex were used to constrain multiple metamorphic events in the Transangarian Yenisei Ridge. The data provide supporting evidence for three distinct metamorphic stages. The first episode occurred as a result of the Grenville orogeny during the Late Mesozoic and Early Neoproterozoic (1050–850 Ma) and was marked by low-pressure zoned metamorphism and a metamorphic field gradient with dT/dH = 20?30°C/km typical of orogenic belts. At the second stage, the rocks experienced Late Riphean (801–793 Ma) syn-collisional medium-pressure metamorphism with a low metamorphic field gradient (dT/dH ≤ 10°C/km). The final stage evolved as a synexhumation dynamic metamorphism (785–776 Ma) with dT/dH ≤ 12°C/km and reflected rapid exhumation of rocks in shear zones. The sequence of collisional events within the western margin of the Siberian craton affected by the Valhalla orogen suggests that Siberia and cratons of the North Atlantic region were in close proximity to one another at about 800 Ma, which is supported by recent paleomagnetic reconstructions.  相似文献

A study of gneisses and schists from the Yenisey regional shear zone (Garevka complex) at the western margin of the Siberian Craton has provided important constraints on the tectonothermal events and geodynamic processes in the Yenisey Ridge during the Riphean. In situ U-Th-Pb geochronology of monazite and xenotime from different garnet growth zones and the calculation of P-T path derived from chemical zoning pattern in garnet were used to distinguish three metamorphic events with different ages, thermodynamic regimes and metamorphic field gradients. The first stage occurred as a result of the Grenville orogeny during late Meso-early Neoproterozoic (1050–850 Ma) and was marked by low-pressure zoned metamorphism at ~4.8–5.0 kbar and 565–580°C and a metamorphic field gradient with dT/dH = 20–30°C/km typical of orogenic belts. At the second stage, the rocks experienced Late Riphean (801–793 Ma) collision-related medium-pressure metamorphism at ~7.7–7.9 kbar and 630°C with dT/dH ≤ 10°C/km. The final stage evolved as a syn-exhumation retrograde metamorphism (785–776 Ma) at ~4.8–5.4 kbar and 500°C with dT/dH ≤ 12°C/km and recorded a relatively fast uplift of the rocks to upper crustal levels in shear zones. The range of exhumation rates at the post-collisional stage (500–700 m/Ma) correlates with the duration of exhumation and the results of thermophysical numerical modeling of metamorphic rocks within orogenic belts. The final stages of collisional orogeny are marked by the development of rift-related bimodal dyke swarms associated with Neoproterozoic extension (797 ± 11 and 7.91 ± 6 Ma; U-Pb SHRIMP II zircon data) along the western margin of the Siberian craton and the beginning of the breakup of Rodinia. Post-Grenville metamorphic episodes of regional evolution are correlated with the synchronous succession and similar style of the later tectono-metamorphic events within the Valhalla orogen along the Arctic margin of Rodinia and support the spatial proximity of Siberia and North Atlantic cratons at about 800 Ma, as indicated by the latest paleomagnetic reconstructions.  相似文献

The Apache Group of central Arizona is subdivided into, from base upward, the Pioneer Formation, the Dripping Spring Quartzite and the Mescal Limestone. Radiometric age determinations by Silver, and Livingston and Damon indicate an age of 1.2–1.4 billion years. Within the Mescal Limestone, algal stromatolites form a conspicuous biostrome, commonly 20–25 m thick. The basal 1–5 m of the biostrome consists of up to three zones of digitate stromatolites, which often form discrete bush-like bioherms. These forms are interpreted as Baicalia baicalica, Parmites sp. and Tungussia sp.; the latter form previously reported by Cloud and Semikhatov (1969). The form Parmites is interpreted as a modification of digitate stromatolites probably by decrease in current velocity within the shallow marine environment, which allowed discrete heads to coalesce. Basal digitate forms are replaced upward in the biostrome by domal and undulatory laminated (stratiform) stromatolites, interpreted to represent gradual upward shoaling, with lower intertidal and subtidal forms (digitate morphology) being replaced by upper intertidal and possibly supratidal forms (stratiform types). The digitate form B. baicalica is suggested by Soviet workers to be indicative of Middle Riphean time (1350-950 m.y.). While many empirical data suggest the possibility of gross subdivision of Late Proterozoic time on the basis of algal stromatolite “zones”, the intercontinental applicability and the ultimate validity of this concept in unresolved.  相似文献

Thirteen decapod crustacean species, eight of which are new, from the mid-Cretaceous (late Albian) limestones of the Koskobilo quarry in northern Spain are described, illustrated, and discussed. They include: Graptocarcinus texanus; Navarrara betsieae gen. nov., sp. nov.; Acareprosopon bouvieri n. comb.; Laeviprosopon hispanicum sp. nov.; L. planum sp. nov.; L. edoi sp. nov.; L. crassum sp. nov.; Viaia robusta; Cretamaja granulata gen. nov., sp. nov.; Koskobilius postangustus gen. nov., sp. nov.; Navarrahomola hispanica; Glytodynomene alsasuensis; and Albenizus minutus gen. nov., sp. nov. Cretamaja and Koskobilius represent the oldest known spider crabs. In total, 36 species are now known from the Koskobilo locality based on 1078 specimens. To discover the magnitude of the diversity of the decapod fauna of Koskobilo, a comprehensive overview of decapod-rich localities and formations from the Cretaceous worldwide was compiled. It appears that Koskobilo is the most diverse decapod fauna from a single locality currently known from the Cretaceous. A rarefaction analysis shows that the maximum number of species is nearly reached. The number of genera, 26, is also unsurpassed for the Cretaceous. Forty-two species are found from localities within the Eguino Formation to which sediments from the Koskobilo quarry are ascribed, which is also unprecedented for a single formation within the Cretaceous. Evidence suggests that the most diverse decapod faunas from the Cretaceous are found in coral-associated limestones. This is consistent with evidence from the Recent, where decapod diversity is high in coral reefs compared to other habitats. This also suggests that the decapod peak diversity in Koskobilo is largely ecological in nature and not caused by a preservational bias. This is one of the most comprehensive studies on Cretaceous decapod diversity so far. Field work in coral-associated strata is expected to yield more decapod-rich faunas.  相似文献

The age of the Katera Group, which occupies a large area in the western North Muya Range and occurs 100–150 km east of the Uakit Group, is a debatable issue. Based on geological correlations with reference sections of the Baikal Group and Patom Complex, the Katera and Uakit groups were previously considered nearly coeval units and assigned to Late Precambrian (Khomentovskii and Postnikov, 2002; Salop, 1964). This was supported partly by the Sm–Nd model datings (Rytsk et al., 2007, 2009, 2011). Finds of the Paleozoic flora substantiated the revision of age of the Uakit Group and its assignment to the Late Devonian–Early Carboniferous (Gordienko et al., 2010; Minina, 2003, 2012, 2014). We have established that Sr and C isotopic compositions in carbonates of these groups differ drastically, as suggested by their different ages. Sediments of the Nyandoni Formation (Katera Group), which contains carbonates characterized by minimum values of 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7056 and maximum values of δ13C = 4.9‰, were accumulated in the first half of Late Riphean (800–850 Ma ago), whereas the overlying Barguzin Formation (87Sr/86Srmin = 0.70715, δ13Cmax= 10.5‰) was deposited at the end of Late Riphean (700–750 Ma). Judging from the isotope data, the Nerunda Formation (Uakit Group), which contains carbonates with characteristics matching the most rigorous criteria of fitness for the chemostratigraphic correlation (Sr content up to 4390 μg/g, Mn/Sr < 0.1, δ18O = 23.0 ± 1.8‰), was deposited at the end of Vendian ~550–540 Ma ago). The sequence includes thick typical carbonate horizons with very contrast carbon isotopic compositions: the lower unit has anomalous high δ13C values (5.8 ± 1.0‰); the upper unit, by anomalous low δ13C values (–5.2 ± 0.5‰]). Their Sr isotopic composition is relatively homogeneous (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7084 ± 0.0001) that is typical of the Late Vendian ocean. The S isotopic composition of pyrites from the Nyandoni Formation (Katera Group) (δ34S = 14.1 ± 6.8‰) and pyrites from the Mukhtunny Formation (Uakit Group) (δ34S = 0.7 ± 1.4‰) does not contradict the C and Sr isotopic stratigraphic data.  相似文献

We propose a detailed δ13C curve for the Vendian and Lower Cambrian (Tommotian) strata of the central Siberian Platform. Two positive carbon isotope excursions identified near the base of the Yuryakh Formation (up to 5.5) and in the lower Bilir Formation (up to 5‰) are assigned to the lowermost and middle Tommotian, respectively. This correlation is supported by paleontological data, specific 87Sr/86Sr values (0.70845-0.70856), and similar C isotope record in coeval Early Cambrian basins. The documented minor vertical oscillations (a few meters) of these isotope excursions relative to the formation boundaries in remote boreholes is presumably caused by the spatiotemporal migration of facies. A high-amplitude negative δ13C excursion (-8 to -11) in the upper Nepa Regional Stage putatively corresponds to the global Shuram-Wonoka negative carbon isotope excursion (Middle Ediacaran). Carbonates of the lower Nepa Regional Stage (Besyuryakh Formation) demonstrate positive δ13C values (up to 5) and minimum 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.70796-0.70832. The C and Sr isotope record of the Nepa Regional Stage provides its robust correlation with the Dal’nyaya Taiga and Zhuya Groups of the Patom Foredeep. Micropaleontological data herein reported and glacial diamictites documented at the base of the Vendian sedimentary cover both in the central Patom Foredeep and on its periphery suggest a full stratigraphic volume of the Ediacaran System in the most stratigraphically complete sections of the central Siberian Platform.  相似文献

It has been established that terrigenous units of mainly carbonate deposits of the Yudoma Group in the Uchur–Maya Region of the Siberian Platform contain an assemblage of Late Vendian Ediacaran-type macrofossils. The assemblage contains species such as Aspidella terranovica, Beltanelliformis brunsae, Nenoxites curvus, and Palaeopascichnus sp., which had widespread geographic distribution. Finds of Ediacaran fossils in fossil-rich deposits of the Yudoma Group have expanded the possibilities of using the classic biostratigraphic approach applied for subdivision and global correlation of carbonate deposits in Late Precambrian paleobasins.  相似文献

Recent work on the Lower Carboniferous Albert Formation of New Brunswick, Canada, has confirmed it to be mainly limnitic (lacustrine) in origin. Within its smallsized basin (ca. 4,000 sq. km.) over 1,300 m of sediment were deposited. These greyish beds are stratigraphically bounded below, above, and toward the south by terrestrial, mainly redbed, formations. Abundant organic varves in a dolomitic marlstone are present, and in places contain articulated fish skeletons. Elsewhere, symmetrical ripple-marks predominate, testifying to gentle water-current movements. The crossopterygianLatvius sp. dates basal beds, in part at least, as Upper Devonian. Ostracodes from an upper member —Euestheria sp., cf.E. lirella; Hilboldtina sp.,Carbonita sp., cf.C. subula — are from the Carboniferous. It is concluded that the Albert Formation was deposited in a tropical or sub-tropical environment, probably in an east-trending rift valley or fault-block basin, over a period of several hundred thousand years, and terminating with evaporitic deposits, at least a part of which were non-marine in origin.  相似文献
