Head-wave parametric rolling of a surface combatant
Complementary CFD, towing tank EFD, and nonlinear dynamics approach study of parametric roll for the ONR Tumblehome surface combatant both with and without bilge keels is presented. The investigations without bilge keels include a wide range of conditions. CFD closely agrees with EFD for resistance, sinkage, and trim except for Fr>0.5 which may be due to free surface and/or turbulence modeling. CFD shows fairly close agreement with EFD for forward-speed roll decay in calm water, although damping is over/under predicted for largest/smaller GM. Most importantly CFD shows remarkably close agreement with EFD for forward-speed parametric roll in head waves for GM=0.038 and 0.033 m, although CFD predicts larger instability zones at high and low Fr, respectively. The CFD and EFD results are analyzed with consideration ship motion theory and compared with Mathieu equation and nonlinear dynamics approaches. Nonlinear dynamics approaches are in qualitative agreement with CFD and EFD. The CFD and nonlinear dynamics approach results were blind in that the actual EFD radius of gyration kxx was not known a priori.

Two computations of the KCS model with motions are presented. Self-propulsion in model scale free to sink and trim are studied with the rotating discretized propeller from the Hamburg Model Basin (HSVA) at Fr = 0.26. This case is particularly complex to simulate due to the close proximity of the propeller to the rudder. The second case involves pitch and heave in regular head waves. Computations were performed with CFDShip-Iowa version 4.5, a RANS/DES CFD code designed for ship hydrodynamics. The self-propulsion computations were carried out following the procedure described in Carrica et al. [1], in which a speed controller is used to find the propeller rotational speed that results in the specified ship velocity. The rate of revolutions n, sinkage, trim, thrust and torque coefficients KT, KQ and resistance coefficient CT(SP) are thus obtained. Comparisons between CFD and EFD show that the rate of revolutions n, thrust and torque coefficients KT and KQ have higher prediction accuracies than sinkage and trim. For the simulation of pitch and heave in head waves, the geometry includes KCS hull and rudder under three conditions with two Froude numbers and three wave length and amplitude combinations. 0th and 1st harmonic amplitudes and 1st harmonic phase are computed for total resistance coefficient CT, heave motion z and pitch angle θ. Comparisons between CFD and EFD show that pitch and heave are much better predicted than the resistance. In both cases comparisons with simulations by other authors presented at the G2010 CFD Workshop [2] using different CFD methodologies are included.

CFD and system-based simulation are used to predict broaching, surf-riding, and periodic motion for the ONR Tumblehome model, including captive and free model test validation studies. CFD shows close agreement with EFD for calm water resistance, static heel (except for sway force and yaw moment), and static drift (except for roll moment). CFD predictions of static heel in following waves also compare well with EFD except for surge force, sway force, and pitch angle. Froude-Krylov calculations of wave-induced surge force in following waves provides good agreement for high Froude number, but significantly overestimates for Froude number less than 0.2. On the other hand, CFD successfully reproduces the reduction of the wave-induced surge force near Froude number 0.2, probably because CFD can capture the 3D wave pattern. CFD free model simulations are performed for several speeds and headings and validated for the first time for surf-riding, broaching, and periodic motions. System-based simulations are carried out based on inputs from EFD, CFD, and Froude-Krylov for a dense grid of speeds and headings to predict the instability map, which were found to produce fairly similar results.

To improve the energy efficiency of ships and to predict ship motion response under actual sea conditions, the far-field theory, strip theory, and Fujii and Takahashi’s modified semi-empirical method are based and studied to calculate the wave-induced added resistance. Firstly, a new modified formula based on the Maruo method is presented to calculate the radiation added resistance for the ship with a complex surface. Meanwhile, some calculation details such as the Green function, the shape of the sections (shape below the still water level or shape below the wave level) in the strip theory, and so on are discussed. Finally, the CFD method is used to simulate the motions of the hull and the added resistance, and the results of the CFD method and those of other numerical methods are analyzed and compared with the experiment results. The modified method in the paper can predict the added resistance in waves for the complex-hull-surface ships well and quickly.

Added resistance in waves is an important part of ship dynamic due to its economical effect on ship exploitation. Can the ship sustain speed in a rough sea state? If not, this will produce delays and economical losses if added resistance is not taken into account in the propulsion design. There are not many simple methods to obtain the added resistance in waves of a ship, and the validity of the results is not always good enough for different ships. In this paper, some theories that can be used to predict the added resistance of a ship are studied and validated against seakeeping tests of some monohull models. Tests and results focus in head seas, which are the most severe for the added resistance. Experimental results are compared with numerical calculations and conclusions about the range of application of the presented theories are obtained.

Improvements of estimation accuracy on propeller torque fluctuations in waves will contribute assessments on safe operation of a ship main engine as in adverse sea condition. The propeller torque and thrust in waves can be estimated by propeller effective inflow velocity in waves, using the propeller open-water characteristics. Fluctuation components in the mathematical model of the propeller effective inflow velocity in waves can be composed of two components, respectively caused by ship surge motion and wave orbital motion at propeller position. In this study, an experimental method by the model test to directly identify the characteristics of the component by the wave orbital motion is newly proposed. Furthermore, the free-running model test in regular waves, using a simulator of the marine diesel engine which manages the shaft speed of the motor on a ship model as behaving the actual diesel engine, is carried out to obtain realistic torque fluctuations for comparisons of the estimated results applying the proposed identification method. Through comparisons of estimated fluctuations with the measured results, the proposed approach for the component of the inflow velocity due to wave orbital motion is successfully validated.

Flapping wings located beneath or to the side of the hull of the ship are investigated as unsteady thrusters, augmenting ship propulsion in waves. The main arrangement consists of horizontal wing(s) in vertical oscillatory motion which is induced by ship heave and pitch, while rotation about the wing pivot axis is actively controlled. In this work we investigate the energy extraction by the system operating in irregular wave conditions and its performance concerning direct conversion to propulsive thrust. More specifically, we consider operation of the flapping foil in waves characterised by a spectrum, corresponding to specific sea state, taking into account the coupling between the hull and the flapping foil dynamics. The effect of the wavy free surface is accounted for through the satisfaction of the corresponding boundary conditions and the consideration of the wave velocity on the formation of the incident flow. Numerical results concerning thrust and power coefficients are presented, indicating that significant thrust can be produced under general operating conditions. The present work can be exploited for the design and optimum control of such systems extracting energy from sea waves for augmenting marine propulsion in rough seas, with simultaneous reduction of ship responses offering also dynamic stabilisation.
