Groundwater recharge estimation using chloride, stable isotopes and tritium profiles in the sands of northwestern Senegal 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A study of environmental chloride, deuterium, oxygen-18, and tritium in deep sand profiles (35 m) has been carried out in order to estimate their relative value for measuring average groundwater recharge. The investigation was located at a 0.1-km2 site in Quaternary sands near the northwestern coast of Senegal in a zone of rainfed agriculture. By using a steady-state model for duplicate unsaturated zone chloride profiles, the long-term average recharge at the site was estimated to be 30 mm yr–1 or around 10% of the average precipitation (290 mm). The chloride concentration of adjacent shallow groundwater was relatively uniform and comparable to the unsaturated zone average, while the spatial variability in the depth distribution of Cl– in the unsaturated zone was considerable. Stable isotope (deuterium and oxygen-18) data show that there is some isotopic enrichment due to direct evaporation through the soil surface. The degree of heavy isotope enrichment is proportional to the extent of evaporative loss and there is good correspondance with the chloride enrichment. Nevertheless, stable isotopes cannot be used quantitatively to estimate the recharge. The excellent preservation of the peak in thermonuclear tritium in precipitation in the unsaturated zone at depths between 12 and 20 m enables an estimated annual recharge of 24 mm yr–1 in this area to be calculated, using the piston flow model. Agreement therefore between Cl and3H as tools for recharge measurement is reasonable over the site. 相似文献

Vegetation cover plays an important role in the process of evaporation and infiltration. To explore the relationships between
precipitation, soil water and groundwater in Taihang mountainous region, China, precipitation, soil water and water table
were observed from 2004 to 2006, and precipitation, soil water and groundwater were sampled in 2004 and 2005 for oxygen-18
and deuterium analysis at Chongling catchment. The soil water was sampled at three sites covered by grass (Carex humilis and Carex lanceolata), acacia and arborvitae respectively. Precipitation is mainly concentrated in rainy seasons and has no significant spatial
variance in study area. The stable isotopic compositions are enriched in precipitation and soil water due to the evaporation.
The analysis of soil water potential and isotopic profiles shows that evaporation of soil water under arborvitae cover is
weaker than under grass and acacia, while soil water evaporation under grass and acacia showed no significant difference.
Both δ18O profiles and soil water potential dynamics reveal that the soil under acacia allows the most rapid infiltration rate, which
may be related to preferential flow. In the process of infiltration after a rainstorm, antecedent water still takes up over
30% of water in the topsoil. The soil water between depths of 0–115 cm under grass has a residence time of about 20 days in
the rainy season. Groundwater recharge from precipitation mainly occurs in the rainy season, especially when rainstorms or
successive heavy rain events happen. 相似文献

Groundwater recharge/discharge in semi-arid regions interpreted from isotope and chloride concentrations in north White Nile Rift, Sudan 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Deuterium, oxygen-18 and chloride were analyzed for 84 samples from deep and shallow wells, precipitation and the river White Nile to investigate groundwater recharge/discharge relations in the semi-arid central Sudan. Spatial and vertical variation in isotopic signature and chloride concentration in the groundwater show similar patterns and indicate local recharge and evaporative discharge. Progressive decrease in isotopic composition along the regional groundwater flow path demonstrates aquifer continuity down the NW–SE recharge-discharge path. Isotope-heavy recharged water progressively mixes with lighter older groundwater formed during cooler and humid conditions in the late Pleistocene. However, evaporative fractionation in the flow path’s final reach in the southeast re-enriches the isotopic composition and suggests evaporative loss of groundwater as the plausible discharge mechanism. Chloride concentration increases down the gradient from the recharge area and reaches its peak in the discharge zones indicating: lack of recharge from direct infiltration down the gradient, evaporation and prolonged rock/water interaction. Head differences and increased isotopic concentration in the vicinity of the White Nile suggest recharge from the river from subsurface flow. Reduced chloride content and relatively heavier isotopic composition in the deep groundwater beneath the wadi of Khor Abu Habil indicate recharge from the streambed into the deep aquifer. 相似文献

Unplanned exploitation of groundwater constitutes emerging water-related threats to MayoTsanaga River Basin. Shallow groundwater
from crystalline and detrital sediment aquifers, together with rain, dams, springs, and rivers were chemically and isotopically
investigated to appraise its evolution, recharge source and mechanisms, flow direction, and age which were used to evaluate
the groundwater susceptibility to contamination and the basin’s stage of salinization. The groundwater which is Ca–Na–HCO3 type is a chemically evolved equivalent of surface waters and rain water with Ca–Mg–Cl–SO4 chemistry. The monsoon rain recharged the groundwater preferentially at an average rate of 74 mm/year, while surface waters
recharge upon evaporation. Altitude effect of rain and springs show a similar variation of −0.4‰ for δ18O/100 m, but the springs which were recharged at 452, 679, and 773 m asl show enrichment of δ18O through evaporation by 0.8‰ corresponding to 3% of water loss during recharge. The groundwater which shows both local and
regional flow regimes gets older towards the basins` margin with coeval enrichment in F− and depletion in NO3
−. Incidentally, younger groundwaters are susceptible to anthropogenic contamination and older groundwaters are sinks of lithologenic
fluoride. The basins salinization is still at an early stage. 相似文献

On the basis of the hydrogeology of the Dousitu River drainage basin, the changes of water flow rate, δ18O and δD along the Dousitu River are discussed according to measured and analytical results. Changes of flow rate along the
Dousitu River agree well with groundwater level contours and the recharge and discharge of groundwater to the river. When
compared with other types of water in the area, it is obvious that the 18O and D of river waters have experienced evaporation. The changes of δ18O and δD along the Dousitu River are mainly caused by combined effects of groundwater recharge and river water evaporation.
The recharge of groundwater makes δ18O and δD of the river water decrease. Evaporation makes δ18O and δD of the river water increase. The evaporation fractions of the river water are calculated using the kinetic fractionation
theory. Results showed as much as 10–30% of water was evaporated in different segments of Dousitu River. 相似文献

The groundwater in headwater region is an important recharge source for the adjacent mountain-front plain. In order to reveal
the relationship among precipitation, soil water and groundwater, from June to September in 2004, stable isotopes (deuterium
and oxygen-18) in precipitation and soil waters at the depths of 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 90, and 110 cm were analyzed at two sites
covered by black locust (Robinia Pseudoacia L.) (Site A) and grass predominated by Themeda triandra (T. japonica (Willd.) Tanaka) and Bothriochloa ischaemum (B. ischaemum (L.) Keng) (Site B) in an experimental catchment at Taihang Mt., North China, respectively. The δ18O of precipitation in daily rain events shows large variations (−13.3 to −4.3‰) with a mean of 8.1‰. The δ18O and δ D of soil waters along profiles in two sites suggest that the influence of canopy cover was just up to 10 cm in top
soil water. The soil water moved over the zero flux plane at 70 cm in-depth is expected to escape the evaporative effect at
the end of September in both sites. The results show that the stable isotope, instead of tritium as tradition, can be used
to trace the soil water behaviors based on the movement of isotopic peak along the vertical profiles in this semi-arid and
semi-humid mountainous region. The infiltration depths of soil water in Taihang Mt. are 12 and 10 mm/day from June to September
in 2004 in Site A and Site B, respectively. Tracing by stable isotope, recharge fluxes of soil water to local groundwater
are of 3.8 and 3.2 mm/day in Site A and Site B, respectively. The results provide desirable information for assessment of
local groundwater resources.

The present study deals with the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater in the upper catchment of Wadi Fatimah basin. The analysis of data indicated strongly that the chloride and sulfate in the groundwater are mainly of marine origin, concentrated by high evaporation processes. Flushing is the most important factor that modifies the ionic concentrations and almost stands for the short-term variation in groundwater chemistry. Weathering reactions of the rock-forming minerals take place under relatively high PCO2 condition in water and soil zone; it can be an important long-term neutralization process. It is accounted as a contributor for Ca and Mg ions in the groundwater. Using the chloride method the recharge rate has been estimated at 72 mm yr–1. 相似文献

Despite its extreme aridity, the Badain Jaran Desert is rich in groundwater. In the southeastern part of the desert, it is
characterized by coexistence of high megadunes and a great number of lakes. Deuterium and oxygen 18 isotope compositions as
well as hydrochemistry of groundwater, lake water, soil water and river water were investigated in detail to gain an insight
into their relationships and the origin of the ground-water. The results show that the groundwater and the lake water are
genetically related, but unrelated to local precipitation and the leakage of Heine River at northern slope of Qilian mountain.
δD and δ18O values of deep soil water (lower than 40 cm) and groundwater plot on the same evaporation line E11, which shows that they
have the same recharge source. The point of intersection between E11 and LMWL suggests that the groundwater originates from
the water resource which has a weighted mean value that is lighter by some 6‰ δ18O than the local precipitation in Badain Jaran Desert. 3H data of water samples shows that the groundwater in Badain Jaran Desert originates from the water recharged after the nuclear
test. The deep fault zone underground maybe the water circulation channel based on Helium analysis of groundwater. The result
has guiding significance to rational exploitation and utilization of the local groundwater. 相似文献

The present work was conducted in the Sinai Peninsula (1) to identify the recharge and flow characteristics and to evaluate
the continuity of the Lower Cretaceous Nubian Sandstone aquifer; and (2) to provide information for the aquifer's rational
appraisal. Isotopic and hydrochemical compositions combined with the geological and hydrogeological settings were used for
this purpose.
A considerable depletion in isotopic content (oxygen-18 and deuterium) and low d-excess values exist in the studied groundwater,
reflecting the contribution of old meteoric water that recharged the aquifer in pluvial times. Modern recharge also occurs
from precipitation that falls on the aquifer outcrops. The wide scatter of the data points around the two meteoric lines,
the global meteoric water line (GMWL) and Mediterranean meteoric water line (MMWL), in the δ18O–δD diagram indicates considerable variation in recharge conditions (amount, altitude, temperature, air masses, distances
from catchment, overland flow, etc.). The isotopic composition in the El-Bruk area is minimum (18O=–9.53‰), very close to the average value of the Western Desert Nubian Sandstone (18O=–10‰), where the local structural and lithologic conditions retard groundwater flow and the main bulk of water becomes noncyclic.
The continuity of the aquifer in northern and central Sinai is evidenced by the isotopic similarity between samples taken
from above and below the central Sinai Ragabet El-Naam fault, the distribution of potentiometric head, and hydrogeological
cross sections.
The combination of isotopic composition in terms of 18O and chemical composition in terms of TDS and salt contents is the basis for separating the studied groundwater into groups
that reflect the recharge sources and isotopic and chemical modifications during flow.

Isotopic constraints on the origin of groundwater in the Ordos Basin of northern China 总被引:7,自引:2,他引:5

Despite its extreme aridity, the Ordos Basin in northern China is rich in groundwater. Many artesian wells or springs with
large fluxes are utilized for drinking, irrigation and industrial production. In a search for the origin of the groundwater,
a detailed investigation of the stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen in the local precipitation, the river water, the springs,
the well water, as well as the soil water extracted from six soil profiles in the Ordos Basin, was carried out. The data show
that δD, δ18O and TDS values of the river water are similar to those of groundwater, while the TDS values of the soil water are about
ten times greater than those of groundwater. Furthermore, the mean isotopic compositions of the local precipitation are significantly
higher than those of river water and groundwater. Based on the chloride mass balance method, the estimated recharge rates
range from 5.2 to 17.2 mm/year, with a mean value of 10.5 mm/year. The results show that the main source of recharge of the
groundwater in the Ordos Basin is not the local precipitation, but must come from a region where the precipitation is characterized
by much lower δD and δ18O values. In addition, the groundwater in the Ordos Basin contains a component of mantle-derived 3He and crust-derived 4He suggesting that the groundwater may partly derive from flows through basement faults beneath the Ordos Basin. 相似文献

Samples of Calamovilfa longifolia were collected from across the North American prairies to investigate the relationship between the oxygen-isotope composition of biogenic silica (phytoliths) deposited in this grass and relative humidity, temperature, and the oxygen-18 enrichment of soil water relative to local precipitation. The δ18O values of silica in nontranspiring tissues were controlled by soil-water composition and temperature, whereas the oxygen-18 content of silica formed in leaf and inflorescence tissues was enriched further by transpiration. Accurate calculation of growing temperature was possible only when the oxygen-isotope compositions of both stem silica and soil water were known. However, the oxygen-isotope values of stem phytoliths can be used to calculate the variation in the isotopic composition of soil water across a North American temperature gradient. As plant organic matter decays and phytoliths are transferred to the soil, the temperature and soil-water signals carried by the oxygen-isotope composition of silica from nontranspiring tissues can be masked by the oxygen-18 enrichment of phytoliths from transpiring tissues. However, the overall oxygen-isotope composition of a soil-phytolith assemblage can be related to temperature using an empirical relationship based on temperature and the difference between soil-phytolith and estimated soil-water oxygen-isotope compositions. 相似文献

Estimating groundwater recharge in a cold desert environment in northern China using chloride 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Understanding sources and rates of recharge to the Badain Jaran Desert in northern China is important for assessing sustainability of the area’s oasis lake ecosystem and its water resources in general. For this purpose, direct recharge was investigated with the chloride mass balance method for 18 unsaturated zone profiles (6–16 m depth). Spatial variability is low across the area (range in mean Cl in profiles: 62–164 mg/L Cl), largely attributable to the uniformity of sandy unsaturated zone conditions. No strong correlations between environmental factors of profile locations and recharge rates were found, though a weak relationship between recharge and vegetation density was suggested. The study area’s complex dune morphology appears to have no measurable impact on recharge variability. Mean estimated diffuse recharge is 1.4 mm/year (1.0–3.6 mm/year for 95% confidence level), approximately 1.7% of mean annual precipitation. Temporal fluctuations in recharge due to climate variability are apparent and there is good correspondence in temporal trends over a time span of 200–300 years. Water balance considerations indicate that direct recharge is insufficient to support the numerous perennial lakes in the study area, suggesting that diffuse recharge presently plays a minor role in the overall water balance of the desert’s shallow Quaternary aquifer. 相似文献

Shallow groundwater dynamics and origin of salinity at two sites in salinated and water-deficient region of North China Plain,China 总被引:5,自引:4,他引:1

Large salinated areas are distributed in the middle and east of the North China Plain (NCP), where the fresh water shortage is serious. In this study, two sites in Cangzhou (CZ) and Hengshui (HS) of Hebei Province were selected to study the dynamics of shallow groundwater level and salinity. Electrical conductivity (EC) of groundwater was combined with the isotope compositions of δ18O and δ2H to identify the origin of salinity. Results showed that the dynamics of groundwater level at both sites were mainly controlled by precipitation and evaporation. Soil texture and structure played a significant role in the dynamics of salinity. The summer precipitation diluted the EC of groundwater at the HS site with homogeneous soil of sand loam, suggesting the larger infiltration rate; however, it did not dilute the EC at the CZ site with heterogeneous soil of sand loam and silt loam, suggesting that the summer precipitation could not recharge the groundwater directly. In winter, the EC decreased rapidly due to the temperature gradient underground if the groundwater was above the threshold level (at least 3 m below the ground surface) after the rainy season. Isotopes of δ18O and δ2H showed that precipitation was the major recharge source for the groundwater at the two sites. The salt mainly comes from the dissolution of soil or rock at the CZ site. While, the evaporation effect was strong at the HS site leading to the increase of the salt concentration. 相似文献

Geostatistical characterization of soil moisture and chloride distribution in deep vadose profiles of the Badain Jaran Desert,Northwestern China 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Geostatistical analysis of soil moisture and ion accumulation can provide a deep understanding of aspects of a region’s hydrology such as recharge rates and flow paths. By combining this approach with detrended canonical correspondence analysis, the present study investigated the vertical and spatial variation of soil moisture and chloride (Cl?) in vadose profiles of megadunes near lakes in the southeastern Badain Jaran Desert, northwestern China. Soil moisture varied vertically within the dune profiles following exponential, logarithmic, or log-normal distributions at different sites as a result of regulation by different local controls. The main local controls for Cl? concentration were slope and orientation of the dune. Cl? was not affected by local controls at depths >5 m. Sills of spatial variation in soil moisture and Cl? in the variogram analysis were highly sensitive to local controls in the top 4 m of the profiles, and the values were three times those at depths >4 m. The lag for soil moisture was insensitive to local controls, and was 50–60 m in the top 4 m of the profiles and 20 m in deeper layers, whereas the lag for Cl? was about 20 m at all depths. The results demonstrate that understanding recharge rates using factors such as Cl? accumulation requires a careful survey to ensure that the local controls that regulate these factors are adequately accounted for. 相似文献

The isotopic composition of groundwater sources of the Sinai Desert was surveyed. The results are characterized by a large spread in the oxygen-18 and deuterium abundances, compared to equivalent systems from less arid climates. The variability reflects differences in the altitude at which precipitation occurred, the evaporation from stagnant surface waters prior to their infiltration into the ground and admixtures of waters which are not of meteoric or recent origin. It is difficult to distinguish between water sources recharged by direct infiltration and others recharged through the intermediary of flood waters, on the basis of their isotope composition. The isotopio composition enables a clearcut distinction, however, between paleowaters and more recently recharged groundwaters. Among the conclusions: paleowaters play a central role in the deep aquifers of desert areas; direct rain recharge to aquifers is widespread; surface waters which have undergone extensive evaporation contribute their water to local perched aquifers which are found along their route. 相似文献

Recharge source and hydrogeochemical evolution of shallow groundwater in a complex alluvial fan system, southwest of North China Plain 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

Many cities around the world are developed at alluvial fans. With economic and industrial development and increase in population,
quality and quantity of groundwater are often damaged by over-exploitation in these areas. In order to realistically assess
these groundwater resources and their sustainability, it is vital to understand the recharge sources and hydrogeochemical
evolution of groundwater in alluvial fans. In March 2006, groundwater and surface water were sampled for major element analysis
and stable isotope (oxygen-18 and deuterium) compositions in Xinxiang, which is located at a complex alluvial fan system composed
of a mountainous area, Taihang Mt. alluvial fan and Yellow River alluvial fan. In the Taihang mountainous area, the groundwater
was recharged by precipitation and was characterized by Ca–HCO3 type water with depleted δ18O and δD (mean value of −8.8‰ δ18O). Along the flow path from the mountainous area to Taihang Mt. alluvial fan, the groundwater became geochemically complex
(Ca–Na–Mg–HCO3–Cl–SO4 type), and heavier δ18O and δD were observed (around −8‰ δ18O). Before the surface water with mean δ18O of −8.7‰ recharged to groundwater, it underwent isotopic enrichment in Taihang Mt. alluvial fan. Chemical mixture and ion
exchange are expected to be responsible for the chemical evolution of groundwater in Yellow River alluvial fan. Transferred
water from the Yellow River is the main source of the groundwater in the Yellow River alluvial fan in the south of the study
area, and stable isotopic compositions of the groundwater (mean value of −8.8‰ δ18O) were similar to those of transferred water (−8.9‰), increasing from the southern boundary of the study area to the distal
end of the fan. The groundwater underwent chemical evolution from Ca–HCO3, Na–HCO3, to Na–SO4. A conceptual model, integrating stiff diagrams, is used to describe the spatial variation of recharge sources, chemical
evolution, and groundwater flow paths in the complex alluvial fan aquifer system. 相似文献

Groundwater and lake evolution in the Badain Jaran Desert ecosystem, Inner Mongolia 总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17
The amount and timing of aquifer recharge and the evolution of lakes and groundwater in the south-eastern Badain Jaran desert of Inner Mongolia, with high megadunes, has been investigated using stable isotopes and hydrochemistry. Unsaturated zone moisture profiles down to 22 m have recorded recharge over 1185 years. Small but finite amounts of recharge are recorded with mean recharge rates of 0.95-1.33 mm year?1, determined using a chloride mass balance technique. The unsaturated profile also acts as a unique archive of hydrological and climate change. Before 1300, it was relatively dry but distinct wet periods may be recognised during 1340-1450, 1500-1610 and 1710-1820. Since the mid 1800s, the climate shows a trend towards greater aridity. The interdune lakes are generally fresh but locally, hypersaline lakes are found in juxtaposition. This implies that in general, the lakes have low residence times and flow back into the dune system, but sedimentary obstruction locally prevents outflow and extreme evaporation occurs. The stable isotope records show that the lakes are fed by palaeowaters which on the basis of other proxy data must predate the Last Glacial Maximum. Their recharge source is problematic but most likely this derives from a diminishing water table extending some 30 m south to the Yabulai Mountains. 相似文献

The environmental isotopes such as deuterium and oxygen-18 and the deuterium excess values have been used to assess groundwater recharge sources and their dynamics in Khan Younis City in the Gaza Strip in Palestine. Three isotopic lines for the relationship between δ2H and δ18O were used in the assessment. These lines are the global meteoric water line, the local meteoric water line and the groundwater evaporation line. The δ2H, δ18O and D-excess values indicate that deuterium and oxygen-18 isotopes originated in the groundwater from groundwater mixing with rainfall and other water sources; the groundwater in the area recharged from rainfall from a distant source that came from the Mediterranean Sea and from other sources such as wastewater, irrigation return flow and saline water. 相似文献

Recharge rate estimation in the Mountain karst aquifer system of Figeh spring, Syria 总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
A. Al-Charideh 《Environmental Earth Sciences》2012,65(4):1169-1178
Figeh watershed spring is one of the important groundwater aquifer, which is considered a major source for drinking waters
of Damascus city and countryside. The origin identification and recharge estimates of groundwater are significant components
of sustainable groundwater development in this Mountain karst aquifer of Figeh spring. During the period 2001–2009, monthly
groundwater and precipitation samples were taken and the isotopic compositions of δ18O, δ2H, and chloride contents were analyzed to identify groundwater origins and to estimate recharge rates. The δ18O, δ2H of the groundwater show that the groundwater recharge is of meteoric origin. The chloride mass balance (CMB) method was
used to quantify recharge rates of groundwater in the Mountain karst aquifer of Figeh spring. The recharge rate varies from
192 to 826 mm/year, which corresponds to 43 and 67% of the total annual rainfall. Recharge rates estimated by CMB were compared
with values obtained from other methods and were found to be in good agreement. This study can be used to develop effective
programs for groundwater management and development. 相似文献

Compositions of deuterium and 18O isotopes of 90 representative samples indicate that thermal groundwater in most parts of China is meteoric in origin. Latitude,
altitude, and continent effects have significant bearing on the values of δD and δ18O of the hot water samples. Oxygen-18 shift is not significant in most of the thermal groundwater, especially the hot water
of low-to-moderate temperature. Slight oxygen-18 shift is only found in some hot springs of high temperature in Tibet and
western Yunnan and in thermal groundwater of low-to-moderate temperature in the deep-seated carbonate aquifers in the northern
North China Plain (including the Tianjin area). Near-surface boiling may causes the shift of the former and the latter may
be attributed to exchange of oxygen-18 between water and carbonates in the geothermal systems of taphrogenic basin-type. Hot
springs in Tibet and western Sichuan have very low contents of δD and δ18O, possibly due to recharge of precipitation and snow-melting water of extremely depleted δD and δ18O values at high latitudes of several thousands of meters. 相似文献
